From the beginning I start collecting SAK's I stored them in plastic boxes. It was not perfect because the all touched each other and I did not like that (gerleatherberman made a remark on that the first day I joined the forum and I :iagree: with him). I found the perfect solution for my Leathermans after I saw Chako's collection ( https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,82209.0.html (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,82209.0.html) ) and now I found the perfect storage for my SAK's to.
I already sorted out my big SAK's and the rest will follow. :woohoo: :hatsoff:

I have a cheapo copy of one of the Gerstner style tool chests. A few drawers have pocket knives and tools in, and the others have watches, cufflinks, razors, pens, pencils and compasses, torches, music stuff, camera stuff, miscellaneous cables, and all the other general life stuff that needs somewhere to live.
-
That´s a fine collection Ivo :like:

Very nice! And well done.

Very nice collection and storage solution, Ivo.
@AimlessWanderer, I have the same thing. My cabinet is a Gerstner, but it's from their "International" line, which is just their code for "not made in Ohio." It's still pretty well made, and it's perfect for storing SAKs, but it cost about 1/10th what a US-made Gerstner cost. Mine's about full; I should get another to add on to the top of it some time.
-
Nice storage solution.

Nice collection, and storage solution.
Here is a 10 year old thread showing my trials and tribulations on finding my perfect storage solution. It shows my initial attempts...settling on a nice tool cabinet and chest...getting another...and that is where this thread ended. I had to buy another longer cabinet and a smaller tool chest afterwards. I am about where I do not want to upgrade or expand my storage solutions anymore. I figure 3 cabinets and chests are my max for allowable space.

I store most of mine in 2x5 foam pouches:
https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-22424/Foam/Foam-Pouches-2-x-5
Keeps the loose knives in storage from damaging each other. I write the dates and model info on the outside.
Displayed items sit on shelves some are on Victorinox display stands

Somehow, I think that's a common problem around here. :ahhh
All IKEA in my office too. Misc. LACK on the walls for open display and most of the box storage. And I think BILLY? units with glass shelving and downlights.

If you have room for that it is the perfect solution , but you need to add more shelves to it :iagree:

Ivo, I recently bought the SAME EXACT cabinet for storing my SAKs and other pocket knives. Got mine at Leroy Merlin...
I guess great minds think alike, LOL!

Most of mine reside in a mid-century Gerstner tool chest:

Nice storage solution Ivo. I’ve managed to find a low-profile tray (crafters use them for decoupage). Putting two together to make a compact storage solution for my small collection. Picked up some foam sheets today and just need to fabricate some dividers and find some latches. :salute:

The 3th box storage box is ready. :hatsoff:
2 Drawers with WENGER's, first drawer with the multiple layers and the old WENGER's, second drawer with the smaller once. The smallest I have to sort out first.
I probably gone rearrange the drawers afterwards.
Now I can start to paint the 4th box.

You should make some trays for your drawers
than you can store more SAKs in each drawer :tu:

Thanks Wspeed
The drawers are only 6,5cm high so no room enough.
I got still one spare box with 3 drawers but I must paint it first.
And I can always buy some more, they are very cheap, only €17,50.

That’s a shame ???

Not for me because I don't like trays in drawers

That does look great Max. Do you have any problems getting the knives out of their spaces? With my fingers, I would probably use a bit of ribbon in each compartment much as you see in some electronic devices to get those batteries out. Mind you, might not even be needed.
-
Thanks Ivo. :hatsoff:
Thanks Chako. The 4/5 layers SAKs are OK, but I need to roll the 2/3 layer ones on their side to pull them out by their lanyard ring. Thanks for the tip on the ribbon! :salute:

I just finished the 4th 3 drawer box. :hatsoff:

Great storage solutions all around. My current solution is a small display, I have another taller than a man, don't just have a place for it, which is a bummer now that I actually have enough SAKs to display on the sides, now ones not in current carry or on display are inside it.

It's a newish, perhaps the newest version of the official cabin so there's apparently some around. Mine I got from a store that switched to blister packaging (spotted a clearance Victorinox sale and inquired from the importer and he gave permission to request it for personal use. )
So keep your eyes and ears open and you may snag one of your own one day if you're lucky.

On topic:
I purchased 4 wooden serving trays a few months ago at "Action" for €2 each.
I mounted some bushings underneath each of them apart from the bottom one.
All topsides got 4 holes drilled into the corners to support the bushings from the tray above it apart from the top one.
I then mounted some cabinet label holders on the front that I had laying around.
So for a total of €8 and some parts I had in my workshop:

Everyone here has much nicer storage solutions than I. I use small Plano tackle parts boxes. They each hold 4 91mm Victorinox knives. Then the boxes are placed in a drawer. I am happy with my system. I am not as serious a collector as some here.😃

My last box is painted, next week I post some more pics with VICs in it. :hatsoff:

This past weekend I made some stacking trays in which to hold my Alox SAKs. It was the major shopping holiday weekend in the US and I didn't feel like leaving home and participating in the Black Friday retail madness, so I committed to only using materials that I already had on hand. Phase 2 will be to build a small cabinet to house the trays, because although stacking trays are both handy and clever, it's a drag not being able to just slide out a drawer and find what you need.
The bottoms of the trays have these little feet, which nest in the corners of the tray below it when they are stacked.
Stacked all together, they look like this:
This tray is for Cadets And Their Ilk, and also includes my kiddo's growing collection:

This tray is for Model 1961 Soldiers And Their Ilk:

The new trays for the Alox SAKs relieve the pressure on my Gerstner cabinet, which was overflowing. The Gerstner now holds only Cellidor-scaled SAKs, and will also house my modding supplies when I get a little more time.

In my own case the Alox knives have kicked my cellidor knives (except for my Golfers) out of my Gerstner chest and into Plano boxes.

I recently found a storage option that works well for me. It is made up of drawer organizers that are stackable that I found at the big box store that starts with a "W". They were only about $8.00 each, and are sized perfectly for my 91mm knives. I stack them in a drawer, and it is easy to remove the top layers to get to the lower ones. The photo below shows 3 trays. They are made of bamboo and are 15" long x 5.98" deep x 1.97" high. I found them in the kitchen organizer area. I've been using them for a couple of months now, and am pleased with the cost/convenience ratio. I added some non-skid shelf liner to the bottoms of them, and all the knives stay put well when opening or closing the drawers. The shelf liner material is available in the same section of the store. I keep my current favorites in the top one, and work down from there.
-
Those non-skid liners are great! I use them

Very elegant! Even after accounting for wall thickness (which looks nominal), I'd guess that 111 mm SAKs would fit easily based on the 6" depth. I don't suppose you have a 111 mm SAK and could confirm?
-
Hey Myron,
Yes, the 111mm SAKs fit with room to spare. Inside depth (front to back) is 139mm/5.5". Inside depth is about 37mm/1.4". Inside length is about 370mm/14.5".

Awesome; thanks JPH!

Now that’s beautiful. Both the storage and those lovely knives.

I store the two SAK's I have in my pocket(s) usually along with at least 1 or more dedicated cutters (normally a stockman plus something else. This week I have the two SAK plus a clip point and a sheepsfoot MAM non-lockin friction folders, and an Opinel No.6) with different blade types. No one blade profile/shape is ideal for every task, after all.

For decades I had three to five SAKs on hand which I just kept on desks, shelves, desk drawers etc. Recently I acquired twenty or so more and I've been storing them in a couple of wooden cigar boxes. I am thinking that my 'collection' has more or less reached saturation point because I decided I'm not trying to get every knife the company produces but rather something like a 'representative set'. I don't go for every permutation but what I have covers most of the bases and most of the tools Victorinox produces. So for example I have a pioneer x and a swiss army 7 (harvester) so probably I won't bother with a farmer or farmer x. I have a sportsman so I won't bother with a small tinker or a tourist. Etc. I suppose I'm trying to tick every functional box (which I might conceivably find use for) rather than every item in the inventory. I understand why people would want to collect them all; alas I lack the space and the doremi! I carry them all, no plans to keep any pristine for display though I guess I have a few spares in case of loss or for gifts...

Well, you two have only been around MTo for a little while. Just bookmark these posts and we'll talk again in a few months...

@jaydar terrific addition to your already magnificent display. :hatsoff:

Wanted something to store my saks in that when moved the knives would not move and bang around. I used a foam inserts cut to the dimension of each sak. Still need to stain the box or paint it. If I paint it I will apply victorinox shield to it. Also use small plastic box's. All from container store.
