Title: The Greatest SAK Combo Thread
Post by: El Corkscrew on June 23, 2017, 08:19:34 PM
Hey folks, I go back and forth on this all the time. I'm not sure if there is a perfect answer, in fact, I know there's not a perfect answer...  but I'd like to see some of you guys try.

This is one of my favorite combos (Farmer/Manager).... and I have a lot more ideas still to come.  So for those of you who like to keep it Swiss, on the key chain, in the pocket, or on the belt or whatever. Show some pics. :salute:

I'm a big fan of combos, but pliers and light and knife (typically). If I pick up a Swiss knife and then have to pick up a second one to carry with it, my first choice was wrong  :D

Carver and PX for me. Plain blade (x2), serrated blade, woodsaw, scissors, opener layer, pruner blade, awl (x2) (recycled pics).

Seems like this is not the thread for 50ft  :D

I'm an urban kind of guy and and can't remember the last time I needed a pair of pliers.  I keep a pair of needle nose in my guitar bag to cut excess string with the wire-cutting portion. I personally find it awesome just to think of which combo I shall try next.  I'm thinking tomorrow of a Rover/Fisherman Combo.... hmmm... saks.....  :D  :salute:

Great idea for a thread Amigo.

Classic holds down the scissors, so that free's you up for all sorts of 84/91/93 japes.

Farmer or Camper for minimal carry,

Woodsman or Swisschamp for maximum carry with some overlap

Or SI/Pioneer/Soldier/Spartan for super minimal.

Some pics:

I'm liking the OHT and Signature Lite team I've been carrying.  Minimized redundancy  (don't need two sets of T&T), while covering one of the shortfalls of the 111mm SAKs (IMO), no small pen blade.

I am also guilty of combining pliers + SAK most days, but my most often combined SAKs are the Minichamp + Explorer or the two Swiss Kings of their respective size categories, Swisschamp + Minichamp

Well I think in my opinion it's either the farmer with a leatherman skeletool or juice model or it's gotta be my custom alox blue farmer with the can opener replaced by an Electricians blade and added scissors and pliers to it.

What are these words I am reading?   I assume you are talking about your favorite He-Man character, or breakfast beverage.  This particular thread is devoted only to those options offered by our neutral, industrious, banking, peaceful, cheese-making friends.

Btw, I was whittling a SAK display at work the other day and a local fireman asked me what I was doing.  I told him I was making a display for my Swiss Army Knives...  his response was awesome:

Are you from Sweden?

But seriously, this thread is about Swiss Army Knife combos, people.  ;)

Normal i use a Trailmaster and a Climber.

But in the car i have this combo: Outrider and Rescue knife. Why ??
3 types of blades : normal, serrated and a belt knife,
2 types of saws : wood and glass,
2 sizes of flat screwdriver,
2 types of cross screwdriver,
...
and no 2 times the same tool

Been looking through some old photos to dig out some combos.  Most of the pics seem to have my Alox Minichamp in, even though I definitely have a Rambler on me more often.  Maybe it's just more photogenic.  Anyway, one of my favourites Mechanic + Minichamp:

I have recently found my ultimate SAK combo. For me, lightweight is a primary factor. I can't get myself to carry larger SAKs, and believe me I have tried. For the last year, my trusty Cadet has been nearly the only SAK knife or MT that I have carried. But I was missing the small implements that one might normally find on a Classic, namely the scissors and tweezers. But the Classic has a nail file, which my Cadet already had, and that redundancy annoyed me far more than it should. The other week I discovered the Jetsetter, and knew my problem was solved. This little SAK compliments the Cadet perfectly with zero redundancy. Sure, I do miss the tiny backup blade a little bit, but I don't really need that. The precision Phillips driver and the fact that it is no thicker than a classic more than makes up for it!

Here is a combo with Victorinox Executive and Wenger Journeyman. Also I have added the swiss card screwdriver, often I add it to my pocket knife.

This is one of my favorite combos (Farmer/Manager).... and I have a lot more ideas still to come.

Just want to say I really like this idea of splitting tasks between combo. I'd separate them into fieldwork tasks and more "housework" tasks. Keep a Farmer on the belt, ready to use at any time, but then at the end of the day when you're at camp, use the Manage/Minichamp for smaller stuff. I currently only carry a new-to-me Fieldmaster, but am looking at a Farmer for the future. hiraethus's posts on page two have also swayed me into the Minichamp camp. :)

For some years I've carried a tinker alone in my pocket and leatherman in my bag (started with a core, then a wave, now a skeletool). I am SUPER excited for my fleabay Explorer to arrive, and have taken to carrying a classic around my neck after I gave several as gifts for a multi-scout Eagle scout Ceremony. Each scout got one in what was my best guess at their favorite color, reminding me to dig up my classic red that rode on my keychain for years after I found it half-buried at a campground (naturally... when I was a scout. And yes, of course, I asked around to ensure it wasn't lost by any of my fellow camper's, Scout's honor!). My SAK tastes are broadening these days!

You know I'm just joking with you. But seriously the Rambler/manager tool set is the smartest 58mm tool set.For most task I've learned the 65mm SD and awl do not perform the same as their 91mm counterparts. The inline awl and longer SD o the 65mm can be easier to use on some jobs.

P.S. if I sound cocky I'm blaming the eclipse.

It's easy to happen.

Which SAKs are on your radar?

Presently automobile, engineer, grand prix, modeler, mountaineer... Pretty much things with a metal file, inline phillips, or preferably both! I've got a passing interest too in models with electronics in the scales. I've been slowly expanding the collection as I hit good auction prices, but I can't say I have a really good focus on anything in particular. I'm beyond set for EDC, work, camping, and social event-tools. what I NEED to do is quit spending money... haha

I know that feeling too

But I sell off some here and there

The coolest one I have with the metal file is the Trail Guide which is basically a Compact + metal file

Sweet! My "agrolinz" branded explorer arrived this evening and I am in love with the inline screwdriver. I'm usually not eager to carry a 4-layer tool, my huntsman only ever sees use when camping. However I think I could get accustomed to having one in my pocket. The beauty and the bane of this hobby is that there are so many choices available  :gimme: :gimme:
I wish I had nieces, nephews, etc. to pass along my "surplus" tools to.

Had a SAK crisis last night.  Needed a pen for the sushi menu and I was like "no problem" .... forgetting I was sporting a Farmer and a classic ->  NO PEN!!!!   :ahhh

I use the pen awl the time.  For my purposes, "The Greatest SAK Combo" must include a pen.   I corrected my err today and replaced the Classic with the Manager.  If that Classic wants to see any more pocket time, he'll have to do a ride-along with a 91mm/plus scales.

Here's a great bushcraft and ropework combination.
Fits perfectly into a Leatherman Molle pouch.

With israelpiper´s picture gone (thanks smurfBucket) I thought it nice to show this combo. Hunter and Helmsman -- two awls but no other redundancies.
(Probably easier to carry and use than the ObiChamp too)  :D.

You got me curious how many classics it would actually take to balance out an XAVT, so I did the math. According to the sakwiki an XAVT weighs in at 351g. The wiki doesn't list the weight for the Classic SD so I googled around a bit and from a few product pages I gathered it weighs roughly 21g. 21/351=16.7. So 16.7 Classics would weigh as much as one XAVT. Your guess of 15 was impressively close!  :tu:

Exactly the same. 58mm on the keychain which is in my bag, Champ in my bag, and 3-layer in my watch pocket. With these three, I feel I'm properly equipped.

My experience has been the opposite. I got a set of white scales a while ago and put them on a Compact. Wasn't my cup of tea so I gave the SAK to my girlfriend, who rarely uses it. It just sits in a drawer in our night stand. And the thing is looking pretty dingy. I haven't tried cleaning up the scales like El C suggested and I am sure I could get it looking nice if I did. But compare that with the black Spartan I have had for twice as long and used twice as much as the white compact. The Spartan is still looking quite nice, despite a few dings and drops. Black wears far better than white celidor in my experience.

Don't get me wrong, I love black scales it just seems they show fine scratches really easily and when you try to refinish them it's really difficult to get them looking as good as some of the other colors. Refinishing green and ruby has turned out well for me..  I'm still learning, it's awl about long, soft strokes...

I'll just leave that hanging there for Pablo...

I'm perplexed, sigh.
I was really digging my 85's for a bit, but then started falling for the allure of the smaller executive. It's so light yet can still get a lot done, at least things I typically need.
Then Nix put a damper on that with the "I don't understand the executive thread"  :twak:  ha ha and got me thinking of an Ambassador.
There does seem a lot to like about the Ambassador except I can't get past the file tip, if only they made a small screw driver tip, like on the Classic SD.
So now I'm contemplating a manager, (or Rambler maybe?)
Is the file on the manager the same as on the signature? It's hard for me to tell from the pics on the Vic website.
Jimminey, just when you think you have things all figured out :)  When I got my first classic though, I recall thinking it was way to small, now I'm sort of digging the smaller tools, at least my executive, unnoticeable in the pocket (not that I really carry it much).
Wish they made something like the manager in the executive size :)
And, if I ended up trying out a manager I'd probably want a second carry, unfortunately my keys are rather large and don't like affixing a knife to them, the bulk makes it cumbersome to use - and ... I don't want to have two knives floating loose in my pocket.
I read a lot that the manager pairs well with the pioneer, but that's the one thing I've been able to do thus far, avoid going down the Alox path ...
Maybe a rambler would be good for me, as that's what I'm doing now!  ???

Yeah the file on the Manager is the same as on the Signature. Both good files but not as good as the one on the Executive. That being said I don't actually have an Executive. Is the texture on its file similar to the 91mm full sized file tool?

Not sure about a 91mm full size, but here is a photo comparing the file on the executive with the one on the evo wood 14.
The reason I like the shape of the one on the manager is for the small flathead end on it vs a nail cleaner point.

with pretty much any 58mm you get the file which is the Sportsman's superpower.. So automatic loss of umph points for me...  But 84mm magic doesn't ever include a pen.. So the manager fills the pen, scissors, and Phillips gap. A tourist or bantam may be more ultimate...
The manager is a credit to any SAK tho...

I think this combo has not been suggested so far, but it's been my pocket EDC for the last few months.
(Maybe it's a world first, dunno  :P)

Lumberjack + Rambler

Pros:
- Very slim (Lumberjack 8mm thick, Rambler 10.5mm)
- Lightweight (71gr total)
- Minimal redundancy (only cap lifter/wire stripper is redunant really)
- Woodsaw & scissors! in a package that weighs the same as a Pioneer

Cons:
- Light duty... especially when it comes to the drivers
- The Lumberjack is not a regular production knife

Pardon the dark, uninspiring pic.

Glad you agree on the manager at least :)  My thinking is can't the same argument be made about the small blade on the tourist or bantam? (Most 58's also have the small blade covered). My thinking was the reason for a larger knife is for the larger blade and the driver layer.

The bantam is just large blade and combo tool.. And as far as the small blade on the Tourist, yes and no.  Could be argued that the different size blades are an advantage.

with pretty much any 58mm you get the file which is the Sportsman's superpower.. So automatic loss of umph points for me...  But 84mm magic doesn't ever include a pen.. So the manager fills the pen, scissors, and Phillips gap. A tourist or bantam may be more ultimate...
The manager is a credit to any SAK tho...

Ya, that's true and honestly I'd probably be happy either way. Of course lack of back tools on the bantam ... light though I imagine.
I'll just have to keep thinking of reasons to get another, until I have them all I suppose, ha ha.
I do say, that awl on the pioneer does look pretty awesome, seems like it could be prone to slicing or smashing a finger, depending on what one's trying to drill through ...

You'd serve yourself well by getting  good ol Pioneer or Farmer.  You can find them pretty darn cheap... like $20/$30 in excellent condition.   >:D

That's certainly a contender for GSC.     That Rally is great.  It's the ultimate compliment to a corkscrew/scissor SAK  :tu:

Does the Victorinox web site have an error in the manager's description?
If I'm not mistaken, according to SAK wiki, the manager DOES NOT have a toothpick, as it has the pen instead. However on the Vic site it lists toothpick.

I believe that the Manager comes with both, so you can take your pick between the toothpick and the tweezers, choose which one to put in the single slot available.

My Manager only came with the tweezers.  I had a spare pic that I put in there instead.

Thanks guys for the feedback. Sounds like whether it comes with tweezers or not, you have to pick 2 of the 3, tweezers, pen, or toothpick.
It is a mistake then I think on the Vic website ...

The pen comes standard on the Manager.  Without the pen, it's a Rambler.  I'm pretty sure you'll get tweezers with it and positive that you'll get the pen.

Got it this_is_nascar. That's what I was led to believe that you don't get a toothpick on purchase. My point was, even if they do supply a toothpick in the box, you can't carry all three with you, (I mean the SAK is not designed to do that, only 2 holes in the scales).
So, I am assuming the Vic website has an error on it, see how anal I am? ha ha :ahhh

Some may consider this excessive (not RoSchro of course, I just don't need a saw at work).  Realistically though, keeping the 91 & 93mm in the fifth pocket is pretty MANAGEable.

Here is my EDC combo. It covers 99% of my every day needs. The most used tools are opened.
On a USB stick are stored soft-sopies of all my documents and there is a kit of some portable software for any needs.
Thereby, I have three SAKs: two hardware and one software.

My first post ever on the forums, so... HI EVERYBODY! :salute:

I think this combo has not been suggested so far, but it's been my pocket EDC for the last few months.
(Maybe it's a world first, dunno  :P)

Lumberjack + Rambler

Pros:
- Very slim (Lumberjack 8mm thick, Rambler 10.5mm)
- Lightweight (71gr total)
- Minimal redundancy (only cap lifter/wire stripper is redunant really)
- Woodsaw & scissors! in a package that weighs the same as a Pioneer

Cons:
- Light duty... especially when it comes to the drivers
- The Lumberjack is not a regular production knife

Pardon the dark, uninspiring pic.

Welcome, Bamba!
Awesome combo and first post!   I may include lack of awl and corkscrew in the cons list, but still, great combo!

Thank you and the previous posters for the warm welcome
Yeah I had to give up SOMETHING... for the weight it still has a nice array of the "core" tools in SAKs. I dig the awl though.

Nice first post Bamba! Welcome. Is the Lumberjack something you made yourself?

Thanks for the welcome magentus,
Nope the lumberjack (in alox) used to be a production knife (not sure the history), SwissBianco sold quite a few runs of those in the last few years.
However Victorinox re-issued the same knife in 2014 I think, renamed as the "Walker" (cellidor only, of course).
They go quite cheap, and I think they make great minimalist hiking/backpacking SAKs.

This thing is definitely showing me the 58mm line has something to offer in usefulness. And sometimes less is really more.

Don't get me wrong I still prefer the 65mm line of tools but that little Phillips driver is almost perfect EDC size.

If only the 58mm line had a jewelers screw driver and awl.

The Explorer and Minichamp II are the two SAKs that I use the most. A Minichamp II lives on the key rings for both of our cars. The Explorer is my favorite and most used SAK. Here are two pictured together:

Note: I blew the shot since the green scales of the Explorer are immaculate but a reflection makes it appear flawed.

Victorinox Sentry and Victorinox Rally. Lightweight carry with no tool duplication, includes T&T, flat and small Philips drivers. The 84 mm is large enough to do quite a lot, while the 58 mm ensures you can pop a cold one without fooling around. :)

It locks in place so t don't close on my fingers when I'm hammer pins or pounding on a rusty clasp to break it free. These are task I would not do with my Farmer because A. The 111mm locks and l've pounded hard enough to really hurt my fingers if it folds on me and B. The 93mm caplifters is beefy but not as robust as the 111mm cap lifter and I believe it well handle more abuses then the 93mm.

I voted for 93mm & 58mm, but the combination of Ambassador and Farmer may just be my ultimate SAK carry combo.

Honestly, I just don't have much need for them. When I do, I'm never far from a sak that has them, or the real thing.

I still think for a stand alone, the SwissChamp is still the best pocketable option for maximum utility (for my purposes anyway).  :tu:

But also I prefer the Spirit for heavier use at work, so paired with a Signature, it's my most carried combo. The bigger pliers with cutting capability and the chisel/scraper tool are the things that take it up a notch from the SC. Also the locking tools and all steel construction make the Spirit more agreeable for hard use and situations when you need more leverage or force to get the job done.

I suppose a lot of different MT-SAK combos would do the same thing.  :salute:

I've found that if you need a Phillips, you're better off getting a real screwdriver!  Anything screwed in with a powertool is only going to wreck your Tinker!

Almost the same way i seem to carry. I used to love the new Soldier in South Africa...Apparently it is naughty here so there are quite a few lock blades sitting in a drawer now.

Today is a Pioneer, A Champion and my always in pocket Mini Champ. Sometimes carry a Swiss Champ but I tend to find that if pliers are needed I just get them from the multitool in the centre console of the car. Plus the Champion is nearly as old as I am so there is something kind of fun about letting it still work for a living.

Interesting, El C.

I used to be devoted to the Farmer & Classic combo. Now the PX has become my favorite 93mm. So I no longer feel the need for a Classic with it's small scissors. After the PX challenge....the PX seems to tick all the boxes, with the exception of T&T.

I went fishing a few days ago with this combo:

The tool I used the most? The Classic. Super easy to pull the little guy out. The scissors came in handy many times when changing lures. The knife was used a couple of times to open packaging. And the T&T each got used once.

The tweezers got used to pick out a small swivel from a small bag. The toothpick got used to free the line from the line keeper on the reel. The line had been pulled tight when it was being stored in the keeper and I couldn't pry it loose with fingers or finger nails. Didn't want to use something hard or sharp and risk damaging the line, so, toothpick to the rescue! (I really think we need a Toothpick badge for creative uses of the toothpick.  :tu:)

I don't carry a Classic. For a year or so I did have one on my key chain and never used it, then I noticed that the T&T were missing so I tossed it in my tackle box.

I mean really guys, why is this thread still going? There can never be a greater SAK combo than the Pioneer and Classic.

The Pioneer give you all the robust tools of the 93mm platform including the beloved awl. And the Classic brings scissors and a file to the party as well as the toothpick+tweezers that the alox is missing. It's the most classic SAK combination imaginable and each one's strengths perfectly match the other's weaknesses. Nothing can beat it.

I don´t care about iconicity, I prefer the Farmer over the Pioneer, and the BuSchroder over the Farmer. I don´t need the opener/screwdriver layer a lot, a combo tool will do. Moreover, alox SAKs don´t have a corkscrew so I´m adding a Waiter. And the Classic is a nice tool, but I find the extra tools on the MiniChamp worth a little extra weight and bulk.

The other tools in the pic are a Opinel #12 woodsaw and a Leatherman Hybrid.

I was being somewhat facetious declaring the Pioneer and Classic the obvious de facto best SAK combo of all time. One wonderful thing about Swiss Army Knives is how many different varieties there are. Every individual is free to choose the SAK or SAKs that best suits their specific needs. It sounds like you have found a very specific set of SAKs that works perfectly for your needs, and that is a beautiful thing.

However, I posit that the "Greatest SAK Combo" can be interpreted in two ways. The first being the greatest SAK combo for a particular individual, which is a valid way to answer the question. Everyone has unique needs and preferences as to which tools they have on their SAKs, and as such the answers could be as varied as individuals who provide them. And by definition, none of them could be wrong. The second way to answer that question is what is the greatest combo for anyone in a more abstract sense. This is a more challenging question to answer, but possibly a more interesting one. There may or may not be a correct answer to this question, but arguments can still be made defending or opposing certain answers.

And I maintain that for a general use case, with out taking into account any specific individuals tool requirements or preferences, the combination of a Pioneer and a Classic is truly the greatest. It is the perfect union of large and small, alox and celidor, one tool for tinkering with external objects and one tool for personal care. There is zero tool overlap, and all the basics are covered. If you need a woodsaw, make it a Farmer and a Classic. While that technically is a different combo, for the sake of argument it checks all the same boxes, and I continue to hold both combinations up as unbeatable.

Challenge accepted

93 and 84 Alox feels horrible, so we can rule both of those two product lines out straight away.

Classic is good, Rambler/Manager is better. Then of course there's a Wenger Pocket Tool Chest if you want some real keyring sized awesomeness.

Iconic was mentioned earlier, so for that you need a pocket sized red celidor scaled knife. Alox is not iconic - red celidor is what the majority of people associate with a Swiss knife.

So which 84-91mm knife pairs best with a Classic or Manager or Rambler or PTC? To determine that, you first have to decide that the smaller knife isn't actually big enough to meet your daily needs, in order to warrant the second knife. Also, you have to decide which knife is not worth carrying without the keyring sized knife, because that doesn't have all the tools you need either. I'm a big believer that if you have to carry two Swiss knives, your first choice was wrong. But if your second choice still warrants carrying your first choice, then that choice wasn't too smart either.  ::)

So instead of analysing the failings of the knives that you bought which don't meet your needs, therefore needing you to carry a second knife which also doesn't fit your needs, in the hope that each will allay the failings of the other - just pick a knife which actually DOES meet your needs. Once we accept that, and we carry a knife which actually does meet our needs for a pocket knife, then we just need to throw a Spirit in the bag or jacket pocket, to cover all the unseen additional challenges that may arise.  :tu:

So the only valid Swiss knife combo, is a Victorinox Spirit, and whichever 84-91mm red celidor scaled knife best suits your own personal needs. Anything else is like wearing odd shoes because you lost the right shoe from one pair, and the left shoe from the other, but are determined to wear the remaining odd shoes just because you own them, even though you have other complete pairs that you could wear instead.

Challenge complete!  :hatsoff:

Alox feeling horrible to you is a unique personal problem that has no bearing on the general case best SAK combo. And the Pioneer is the modern day iteration of the original Soldier model, which was the first SAK ever made. So I would argue it is most certainly an iconic SAK.

And I would agree with your point that carrying two SAKs means you didn't select the first SAK well enough. I usually only carry one SAK at a time myself. However, this thread is about the greatest SAK combo, so that is what we are debating here.

I would also accept replacing the Classic in the Pioneer+Classic combo with a Manager or Rambler, just like I would accept replacing the Pioneer with a Farmer. These substitutions still hold true to all the reasons I am saying it is the best combination in the first place, and do not alter my argument.

Don't take my earlier post too seriously ;)

However, I would still argue that the Pioneer is far less iconic that the red celidor. If was only once I'd crossed the threshold into being more than just an ignorant everyday knife carrier, that I discovered that Victorinox did a metal scaled knife. If I had seen an alox knife 15 years ago, I would not have known that is was made by the same company that made the red celidor scaled knives that I was familiar with. I have spoken to other knife users who are not enthusiasts, and they didn't know that non-plastic scaled knives were made. That doesn't make it very iconic in my book, whether it is a derivative of the actual issued knife or not.

That being said, I take this very seriously! :ahhh

Perhaps you're right that the red celidor SAKs are the most iconic. That alone does not determine the age old debate between alox and celidor. There are excellent points to be made in favor of both types of SAKs, and I do not wish to get into all those details here. However I will say that that is a great reason why the greatest SAK combo of all time should include one of each!

:D

I'm probably going to contradict myself a few times here...

I think the 93mm line is great, the awl, the beefy blade, the smooth backsprings, and the overall rigidity... but the feel of the alox is something I can't tolerate for any length of time. I can handle one, but gripping the handles tocut something or turn a screw, sets my hairs on end. At some point in the next 12 months (hopefully), I'll be doing an alox mod which captures everything I like about the line, but ditching the alox scales in favour of brass or nickel bolsters and wood scales... plus scale tools.

I love the 58mm alox scales. The smaller pattern on those doesn't have the same feel as the larger squares on the 84/91mm lines. I have an alox rambler on a neck lanyard with a load of other simple tools, and very often this will be my base layer of carried tools. Sometimes I leave the house with just that, and the small tools on my keyring.

Even if I have an 84-91mm Swiss knife in my pocket, I will often have the neck lanyard on too. This isn't to pair knives, but to ensure I have the additional capabilities of the lanyard - a light, Uncle Bills Silver Grippers, a mag glass (better than any on a knife), a whistle, and a pen. Even though I have those scissors, plus the ones on the Dime on my keys, I wouldn't dream of carrying my Tourist. Why would I carry an 84mm knife without scissors, when I can carry one with scissors? Likewise, if I'm carrying my knifeless MP400 mod which has decent scissors, I'll happily carry a traditional slipjoint folder, or a modern pocket clipped one hand opening folder ... but still not that Tourist for the same reason as before. It doesn't matter how many other pairs of scissors are on my carried tools, Victorinox scissors are the best I could choose to carry, so why carry a Tourist and settle for lesser scissors, when I could carry a Climber Small instead... it's either Swiss knife with scissors, or a different type of knife entirely.

The best analogy I can put on this is a traditional knife is a motorcycle, and a Swiss knife is a car, and scissors are the car doors. People ride motorcycles all the time, exposed to the wind and rain, but if you get in the car instead, you expect it to have doors on...

So I do sometimes carry two Swiss knives, one of which is alox, even though I stand by my earlier comments about carrying two knives and about alox, and I don't consider them a combo, because i'm not carrying one to make up for the inadequacies of another

If i'm carrying a knifeless pliers tool, or one with non-locking blade, that doesn't just cover the plier capability, but the Phillips too. As such, I can go for a Wenger Traveller, Climber Small, Ranger, or whatever. However, if I'm carrying my Spirit, which is the only tool i'm keeping for pocket carry which has a locking blade, my Swiss knife needs a Phillips (Cybertool, Voyager Lite, Salesman, DofE). This is to minimise unnecessarily using a tool with fixed blade, even though it's not the blade that i'd be using, and the Spirit has a good Phillips...

Tool carrying really brings out our quirkiness  :D

I love the feel of alox (58mm, 84mm, and 93mm all) and I frequently carry an alox model over a celidor just so I can fondle the scales. I think we have talked about this before. :P

Here's a combo that makes a lot of sense. Pocket tool chest and a Vic Walker.

My standard EDC is an Explorer and a MiniChamp. I feel this combination covers most of my day-to-day needs and is easy to pocket.

The Pioneer + Classic combo has been getting a lot of pocket time lately.

I voted 93 and 58.

I don't need a combo if I carry a 91mm.  It would have everything I need

If I happened to have a 93mm, the 58mm scissors and tweezers, and sometimes the small blade come in really handy.

I'd divide the tasks into "got the job done" and "bailed me out"

The large blades, screwdrivers, and openers on either the 91 or 93mm SAKS got their respective jobs done.

But over the years, its the tweezers, eyeglass screwdriver and the scissors that have bailed me out.

For some reason, its the bailouts that make being prepared feel good.

Most of the time, I'm carrying my Trekker at work and one of many 91mm's I like to alternate through.  When I'm not at work, and just out and about I might carry my SwissChamp 'substitute' combo at the top (Marlboro Troubleshooter and Outdoorsman).   I also tend to keep the Signature on my keychain as a backup pen.  So my vote for overall best combo is 111mm and 91mm.

It is really cool to see a lot of us do tend to carry more than one.  Really love a lot of these combos others have on here!

hmmm... if I knew then what I know now... I would say that for a combo it would have to be large and small.  Medium (91 or 93) don't really need a combo.

A lot of great combos on this thread.  I carry a Tinker and Classic SD, a little boring but easy to get in stores and is a great toolset for day to day challenges.

Great points! You’re right, accessible and a great set of tools! Just seems to lack  one essential component that I can’t seem to put my finger on...

LOL, let me guess

I actually did just get a Climber which I am enjoying a lot.  The Tinker and Classic SD though they seem to have in every Target and sometimes the Huntsman (I don't need the saw) so that is why I give the nod to that as my combo of choice even though it has overlap with the tweezers, toothpick and screwdriver a little bit.

I just got a Cadet and wow I love it.  The Alox is really nice and it looks like a piece of art.  I am going to pair it with a Rambler.

Congrats on the new purchase!

Cadet and Rambler look like a good combination of tools.

Thought I'd toss my $.02 into the mix...

Normally I have the Mini Champ in my pocket and a 91mm on a suspension clip or belt pouch (Explorer at home and Swiss Champ when out).

The Mini Champ handles smaller, precision stuff with ease, leaving the 91mm for the bigger things. Sometimes a bigger blade or bigger scissors just makes the job easier/quicker/less fiddly. Likewise, the Mini Champ's smaller tools do things the 91mm can't handle. They complement each other.

I like two layer knives for easy carry but neither the Spartan nor the Pioneer does it for me.
I want the saw and the scissors! So today it´s BuSchroder and Compact. Great combo!  :tu:

tough question. I think almost any  medium SAK with a Classic SD is an unstoppable combo.

I have my Stayglow SD on my keychain at all times, then depending on where I am I pair it with one of two SAK's
- at work (office environment)  I pair it up with an Alox Pioneer . The Pioneer is slim and fits so will in my work bag. I have scissors in my desk at work so I dont really need them on my pioneer .
or
-On weekends when I hike, mountain bike or am just running errands I like to pair my SD with my Stayglow Climber. I absolutely love the scissors and use them a lot on my days off, and the Stayglow scales are amazing.

In conclusion: I just think an SD and whatever SAK is best for YOU is the best combo!
