Title: Victorinox SwissCard
Post by: gerleatherberman on September 26, 2017, 05:45:20 AM
I carry this for personal grooming sometimes. Only problem I have is forgetting it is in my pocket! The scissors are very nice! And the ink pen has saved me when not having a pen to sign a check once.
Anyone else use the SwissCard?

Note: Pic with other SAKs for size reference.

Have a newer swisscard lite version I keep in my backpack, love the tool, although the light is of no use.

I have been curious about the Swisscard for some time as a replacement for the Classic SD on my keychain. Do you carry it in your wallet? And if so, doesn't it make it rather thick?

I am not sure about all wallets, but you can see in the picture, it is way too big for the trifold wallets some of us use. A bifold may hold it in the bill sleeve on one side. And yes, it would be significantly thicker. I carry the SwissCard in my back right pocket alone. The weight is negligible.  :)

I've heard of it cracking due to being sat on, when kept in a back pocket.

The scissors are among my favorite Vic scissors. The card pairs well with the Vic Spirit, which has somewhat lack-luster scissors comparatively.

I can understand why. However,  I wear relaxed fit jeans and do not sit very often.
I have given it some thought though and may shift my folding knife to the back pocket and put the SwissCard in my front.
It has held up well. I bought it around 10 years ago. :o

It is much better than a sh*tty pen that cracks after two days to give good feeling and an image of reliability for a brand

Indeed! Thank ya!
Most of my Vic stuff acquired back then has held up well, except my explorer, but it was admittedly abused on many occasions  for about 15 years(edc'd with mr. Pinchy). I need to disassemble it and repair the liners and get new scales for it.

I EDC the Nailcare Swisscard, inside a Skinth Toolet. I chose this version because it has everything I need and no blade. I consider it air travel friendly and I'll test it soon, going to Cyprus, Abu Dhabi and Vienna.

I've been thinking about getting one of these for my wife. The problem is that she seems to NEVER put things back where they belong. So I can see all the tools eventually being scattered to the 4 corners of the Earth with an empty card floating around in her purse--or the entire card being lost somewhere in the Twilight Zone.
So I've held off on getting her one. I got her a Classic SD in cobalt blue for her keychain. She was working for a school district at the time and told me that she wouldn't be allowed to take that into a school. I haven't seen it since. It slipped into the Bermuda Triangle for eternity. That was 10 years ago.

It is a real "nailcare" file, perfect for nails, don't use it on anything else. For emergency work you don't need to take the file out of the card, the section that is naked is suficient enough.

I carried one off and on for several years in my wallet. It cracked, I sent it back for warranty replacement, and I haven't really carried it since. It's not a bad tool by any means- in fact it's quite good at doing what it's meant to do. It's just not something I need enough to tote it with me every day and worry about it cracking, not to mention the George Costanza wallet.

I airtraveled with my Nailcare Swisscard  (and Wenger Traveler) with no problem. I was surprised to find a complimentary sewing kit in card format at the Jumeirah Hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
I like it and thought it is worth posting.

I could post to any kind of forum with things I saw here. These people are insanely rich and they like to show it. This petrified wood stone is rare and very expensive. They simply used hundreds of square meters of it and myriads of marble, granite, alabaster, everything.

I received a Swiss card as a gift about 25 years ago. I do not use it often; I generally carry a Vic Huntsman or Ranger. When I had found the Swiss card useful when I was flying and only taking a carry on bag. I would slip out the blade and still have the scissors, nail file, screw driver, toothpick, tweezers, etc. with me. Over the years I have found it to be quite useful on these trips.

I carry this for personal grooming sometimes. Only problem I have is forgetting it is in my pocket!
The scissors are very nice! And the ink pen has saved me when not having a pen to sign a check once.
Anyone else use the SwissCard?
Note: Pic with other SAKs for size reference.

Don't forget to show the pin in the toolset GLBM! - There's one in every model !

@ Jayaman - A mod   ???   - I think that is stretching it a bit   ;)

I've have a couple of Classics and Lites - But not the Nailcare or Quattro
I never saw it as a wallet carry !!

I always used to carry one in my car - Mainly for grooming and the pen was always useful
I found the scissors a little awkward to use at first - But then developed this technique to use them
- Normally your forefinger is in the loop but I put my little finger in there - It works really well

I now have a Wenger 17 in the car - But I need to start again with the Swisscard

Hey you folks who carry a bladeless one for air travel - I thought scissors got confiscated too - Rules seem to vary so much!
Title: Re: Victorinox SwissCard
Post by: Huntsman on October 28, 2017, 11:19:34 PM
Hey
Did anyone notice this variation in the SwissCard blade?   ???

The older one is at the top - The blade is shaped like a regular SAK blade
- It looks like they just used the same blade as the Executive  - Everything lines up even the hole is in the right place
Except ...... The Executive blade is quite a bit thicker.

Then it looks like later they developed a completely custom blade for the SwissCard - also with the sharp edge on the other side

Knowing Vic they always do things for a reason :)
Any thoughts/theories on what has been gong on here anyone ???

Must be a SwissCard Day for me today...

This morning I used the tweezer from (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171030/2742686c892eb72e2a56df5c17170ba9.jpg)my SwissCard Lite to remove a thorn from my index finger... Also used the magnifier to locate and magnify the thorn.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171030/29eb109e4abd1783f6f0e3c1fcbe6391.jpg)

Got home this evening, and the money clip I ordered arrived... got it out of curiosity... stuck it on a quattro

The glass file of my Nailcare broke in two pieces. Reasonable, since I am seating on it everyday. I still use the removable half, but I don’t know how would I remove the stuck half if I decide to. Some thin cracks around the scissors are visible.
But by carrying it everyday in my left back pocket I already used most of the tools a lot. I don’t mind some urban war wounds.

but I was able to find a normal "carton + grit paper glued onto it" one that fits perfectly and can  bend, being much less rigid than the glass one

After suffering 200 pounds of flesh and bones a lot of times on it, you can see some hair-like cracks here and there. But it still works, with paper file in place of the glass (easily replaced in every Hotel room of the globe) and I’m a happy customer.

They seem to work well, even when they have started forming cracks. Maybe look into laminating the outside of it to keep the stress cracks from getting worse?

I've been looking into Swisscards for some time, as I planned to get my mother an Explorer, but her nails can't really handle opening SAKs for some reason.

I planned for scissors and a magnifier as they could help her at work and otherwise as a nurse neat cuts are needed and you'll see, or rather not see a lot of important small text.

Anyway it seems the Nailcare could be the answer, even neatly fitting her phone case to always be available. I just don't know if she'd like the concept of that tool either, and I wouldn't like to pay the rather high price for a new one for just a test.

But for now I've bid on a cheap Quattro to add to my collection and as a test run, if she likes it and can use it I could buy the Nailcare without doubts about about reception.

The Swisscard Nailcare would be a good choice for your mom... the nail file is brittle and can easily break-off... These I heard from guys that put them in their wallets... But in a purse pocket should be no problem...

Another option is the Lite version...

My Nailcare has survived in a bifold wallet in my front pocket for two plus years now.

If I'm not taking my wallet somewhere then I move it to the camera case.

Pics are from a few months ago, Nailcare was a gift from Beat, thanks mate.

Well that's what I think, but as we all know if mom thinks otherwise the convincing otherwise can be a Herculean task, so if the Quattro is welcomed in concept I can be sure she'll love the Nailcare.

Oh, and she also had a hand injury that's lowered at least her confidence on her fine motor function, so while her nails can't handle a SAK she could dismiss the card tools as too fiddly. Or I'm just unsure for nothing, that happens too.

I used to carry my one in my wallet for more than one year. And I decided that it is quite useless for me. Because I have the same tool kit on my Manager@Work, Explorer and Fenix flashlite. They cover all my needs at 95% cases (for other I have a multitool on my backpack). So I realized that during that year I did not use my Swisscard even once.
According to its tools - I do not like much its mag.glass because it is not made preciously and has some distortions and do not like the scissors because its size does not fit to my needs: for tiny work I have a 58mm knife scissors, for large works I use an officer knife scissors.

I think the SwissCard is a great concept - But I never carry one for similar reasons.
The torch is pretty terrible and the scissors a little awkward ... although fully functional - Also never used the Quattro SD -  I wish I had! - Again a great design..
And it is a bit fat for a wallet for me - Of course it could hardly be made thinner!

Although I did carry one in my car for ages - Mainly for the pen.

I think it's great for someone who does not carry any other tools, SAK etc - eg Dare I say it? - Eg a lady's handbag
I could possibly see myself carrying the SC eg in a dress suit for a wedding or such like.
It would also be a great addition to carry with a tool that does not have the tp/tw
- Eg a Leatheman or Alox knife - If you are someone (like me) who does need those tools.

PS. Did you or anyone else see my post on the previous page re the blade changes?  ???  - Any comments folks?

I airtraveled with my Nailcare Swisscard  (and Wenger Traveler) with no problem. I was surprised to find a complimentary sewing kit in card format at the Jumeirah Hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
I like it and thought it is worth posting.

I could post to any kind of forum with things I saw here. These people are insanely rich and they like to show it. This petrified wood stone is rare and very expensive. They simply used hundreds of square meters of it and myriads of marble, granite, alabaster, everything.

Yeah, I'd be pretty surprised given that the Swisscard alone is worth like 2-3 of my typical hotel nights.

And the blade changes are interesting, but maybe no one just has info on them for now?

PS. Did you or anyone else see my post on the previous page re the blade changes?  ???  - Any comments folks?

A couple years ago I did special investigation for Russian gun forum https://forum.guns.ru/forummessage/391/1905027-m45258212.html about changes in SwissCards and their blades. It is directly linked with "metodime" site http://victorinox.metodi.me/swisscard.php information and as usual based on comparative analysis of tonnes internet photos and some catalogues.
So, briefly about blades. All SwissCard generations and models since 1996(1997) used to have 74mm knife blade moulded into a plastic handle (cutting edge down). Only since 2003 for SwissCard Lite they have started using special design blade (cutting edge up). For other models they used to use 74mm blade until approximately 2009. Since that I see all the models with new design blade.
For sure, I can be wrong, so if anyone has more precise information - please correct me.

Upd: So after a year of carrying I withdrew Swisscard out from my wallet but left a pen and "quadro" screwdriver instead of it (specially bought).

Thanks FM - Wish I spoke Russian/Ukranian !

Although the Swisscard blade is thinner than the 74mm - At least when I looked at mine!

Which is strange - Right?
If they were going to use the 74mm blade you'd think they use exactly the same blade or a completely different design
Not a thinner one - as presumambly this is a different manufacturing process    ???

EDIT PS: The SAAMS site says the first SwissCards had riveted scissors - Which seems strange as the SC came out in '97 and Vic switched to riveted scissors in '92, so you would think they had always been riveted. I have a very early SC and it certainly has riveted scissors!

I have looked at three mine 74mm knifes and their average thickness is 1.5mm. But all mine are too old and were made before 1992 (they have screw on scissors), thus in 1997 the thickness of 74mm blades might be less, or might not. After some investigations and discoveries I am sure in nothing :) May be somebody else who has old type blade can help us. Does old blade (I mean 74mm type of blade) have a stamp the tang or does not?

If anyone has more modern 74mm knife than mine (approx. 1996-2000), could you measure the thickness of its blade?

So, let's return to Swisscards. Thanks to LeaF, I got some pictures and measures (Fig. 1) from his collection. As we can see, old blades have 0.87-0.90mm thickness, and modern ones have 0.88-0.96mm. My Swisscard' blade is 1.0mm thickness. So, modern blades I can divide in two groups: one has 0.88-0.90mm and second one has 0.96-1.0mm. I suspect, it might be two generations of modern blades. I think, we need help from other Swisscard owners.
So, can you measure your Swisscard blade at the definite place (Fig. 2) and tell us its thickness as well as the year of Swisscard production. The year can be found if you look through the Card (Fig. 3). e.g. mine was made in April 2012.

EDIT PS: The SAAMS site says the first SwissCards had riveted scissors - Which seems strange as the SC came out in '97 and Vic switched to riveted scissors in '92, so you would think they had always been riveted. I have a very early SC and it certainly has riveted scissors!
This I do not understand, sorry. All Swisscard scissors through the years used to be and still are riveted, are not they?

Bumping this back up as I am curious what others think.
This appears to be a Gen 2 SwissCard, but the box has a copyright of 1996.
Which generation do you think this is?

Sorry folks I mistyped Sams says this
"SwissCard 1st generation contained screw-joint scissors while later those replaced by rivet-joint scissors."

So  yes FM - My point was I would have thought that they would always have been riveted?  ???

If there’s a protractor, it’s a Gen 2... solid or translucent color is not a determining factor... I can say this as I have translucent Gen 1 and 2
Title: Re: Victorinox SwissCard
Post by: Huntsman on February 16, 2019, 03:53:55 AM
Hmmm - Depends what determines Gen II - I thought it was translucent  - Eg If you check SAMS

Hmmmmm some more  -  Just checked SAMS again - The pictures seem to indicate Gen II = Translucent
But the features table seems to indicate protractor presence determines Gen 2

As always: Dating/generations is more of an art and opinion than scientific/definitive    ???

Based on SAAM’s... I would say only the protractor was added on the Gen. 2

Plus I think SAKwiki needs a little update as well... Protractor is present on solid colors and not just translucent... I have a sample...

Update:
The Heliswiss card did not have a protractor on the back and the scissors were riveted together.

My newest that arrived:
Gen 1 card (seen on the left), does not have the protractor and has screw together scissors.

I do have the same pattern : black body and notSoRed blade, so it may be original ?
I gave it to my dad, but I may be able to find a pic (it was also a swisscard lite, but can't rember if red or white led)

edit : here is a pic, appears to be a 2004 model of Swisscard Lite (as my notes say about it, not sure how accurate this note is)

I have at least 6 lite versions... 3 of those are red, blue and black trans in red leds... and the same story for white leds...

But yes, at least not nearly as many colors as the classics...

I like that thin Executive blade in the SwissCard.  Which SwissCard did it come in?

Now that's what I call making use of all the available printing space on the tool. I guess that in part is why the SwissCard is so popular--as it's basically a business card with removable tools.  Surprised the Tomo didn't catch on for that use.

^^^ Good point Cody

Although I bet Mr. Kazuma Yamaguchi from the Abitax design studio, as part of his contract with Victorinox, had a clause that stated no-one was allowed to pollute the beautiful lines and colours of the Tomo

Which leads me to the other reson the Tomo itself did not stay around - Only IMHO of course .....

I bet he also mandated that there would be no tp and tw - For the same reasons - ie ruins the look and the elegant lines .
However missing out the tp and tw on a tool that in the majority of cases is for personal care, grooming etc was a real mistake!!
If it was me I would have put them both in with colours that matched the Tomo colour - Or at least the tip of the tweezers
But then you are bumping up the cost of course!! But increasing the usability, and also wow/unique factor!! Which folk might pay for!

Just my musings - What do y'all think? !!

Title: Re: Victorinox SwissCard
Post by: Thunderpants on May 16, 2019, 09:51:13 AM
Was he really that precious about the "beautiful lines" of the Tomo? I mean, what lines?! It's a rectangular chunk of plastic!
Like many SAK fans I am almost itching to spend money unnecessarily on SAKs I don't actually need, but every time I look at the Tomo it says "don't bother!" If it had a single feature that was lacking in a Classic I'd be interested. Actually, it seems like a wasted opportunity - they could have done something really interesting with just one or two novel features, but went too minimal - thus generating minimal interest.

Hi (new here)

Does anyone know how much these are worth? Is it a gen1? Just found it in my attic when searching through a box of old things. Tried to look online but most the auction sites ban the sale of knives etc so it's hard to find a similar one. Any info would be much appreciated

Thanks

Steve

Hi SteveT...

Welcome to the forum...

To answer your question, if it doesn’t have the protractor on the back of the sliding door which covers the scissor, yes its a Gen 1... Otherwiise, Gen 2...

No there’s no protractor on the back of the scissors so it must be gen1 then l take it. Is there anywhere on here you can sell items like this? As I have a couple of other old multi tools as well and I’m having a bit of a clear out

Thanks for the help

During my visit to Switzerland in last June, I also bought two of the latest Fragrance Travel Sprays. (One already sold).
When in the Vic Shop my wife asked me if I would like to buy the latest SwissCard because it matches with the Travel Spray. Stupid me didn't listen to the wife, so I didn't buy it. (I already had spent too much money in the Shop.)
At home I unpacked my stuff for storing it. Suddenly my wife said "I have the fragrance that goed with your Travel Spray!"
"???"
"Yes, while you were looking around, the salesperson gave me this little tester and told me the Travel Spray is made for this typical fragrance. Wonna?"

Now I have the set, but not the accompanying SwissCard. Well, something to wish for!

I will know in a week or so when it arrives.  My thought is maybe that slider got more use which is why it is a different shade.
Another reason why I prefer to buy mint-in-box, but since this was only $9 delivered I decided to take the risk.  :hatsoff:

I'm thinking about buying a Swisscard for travelling by airplane. I was first looking at nailcare version but its more expensive and no knife. Not having a knife is a plus for flying but I also want to use it maybe later as a back up and having the blade is fine. Now from that I look at other models, and I like the Lite. The magnifying glass is such a rare tool in saks that its a plus in the back up option.
That said, I still dont want to have the blade trough check in the airport, and there's no file in the card. So i think I will cut a file somehow to fit the blade slot. Do you guys think thats easy?

I just use paper nail files from the vanity kits included in most Hotel rooms, since I broke my glass file. They fit perfectly and, if not, it is easy to reform them.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220217/b1f2504cb4d4f0df39f753459d2e284d.jpg)
