Title: What air pistol do you use?
Post by: Weasel on January 21, 2015, 09:50:58 PM
Don't know if this has been asked before but I love air pistols. I have a HW 75 in .177 and a crosman 2240 in .22 that I have wanted to mod for a while but never got round to it.so what air pistols do other uses of this fine forum use and what do you shoot with them

There are a few similar threads by I think they are in the gadget and break room sub forums. I have a crossman vigilante but I only really use it when there is no proper hunting.

Browning URX pistol in .177, Pioneer crappy rifle in .177 and my favorite gun, a Crossman Mark 1 in .22.  I also have the Mark 2, which is the same thing only in .177.

Nice pistols your old crosman  is realy nice looking

Thanks!

Between the gas it discharges and the power it hits with you'd swear it was a real .22 and not an air pistol!

Sadly here in NANNYStralia air pistols are classed the same as "real" pistols and you need to go through the hassle of a full pistol licence to have one.

20+ years ago in New Zealand I had a Crosman "357 six"  which I had adapted to use the CO2 cylinders that the aircraft life jackets used. The cylinders were thrown out on their use by date so I had an endless supply for free rather than buying Crosman powerlets.
It was actually pretty accurate, I could get a six shot "one ragged hole" group at 20 feet  (length of my workshop)

That's sad about the air pistol laws in Australia I had no idea .but a small price
To pay to live in what looks like a great place.
I've always wanted to emigrate to either Australia
Or the USA for a better outdoor life but now I've got 2 small children
And a wife that wouldn't dream of moving abroad.
So I'm stuck here!

Yes, it's a Beeman scope. I was just experimenting with a scope on the air pistol, and was not sure what to expect. What I got was another whole level in surgical precision shooting. The German gun with the scope, you can pick which  eye you want to shoot that fly in.

Excellent I'm going to have to get one on mine. The weihrauch version is quite expensive here but like you say it will be more accurate.thanks for your input.
Do you shoot any pests with your pistols ? I've taken rats and mice at close range

1.2 smurf tonnes I believe.

Actually I'm not really sure.  The original specs say it'll push a pellet to 490 fps but this gun is somewhere around 40 years old so who knows.  The seals are brand new, replaced just a few months ago so it can't be that far off factory.

I think my crosman is about the same power
But I've never noticed a gas discharge that spectacular.
It is bloody loud though.

I realize there are a lot of variables in recoil, but this one seems to kick almost as hard as a conventional .22.  I'd say anything you could hunt with a regular .22 could be hunted with this one.

I have to admit that I shoot my air guns way way more than my firearms. No need to drive out to the range, but a few steps out in the woods in back of the house, an empty soda can, and I'm in business. Or a pouch of pellets in the pocket and just walk through the woods plinking at pine cones or a stick here and there. The Beeman wetly hurricane and Tempast are quiet enough that nobody hears anything.

It's a nice enough gun, but I really don't care for it.  Maybe I'd like it more if it didn't pale in comparison to my Crosman pistol though- it's apologetic little pop just seems like such a letdown next to the authoritative POW from my Mark 1.

I was looking very closely at a Swiss Arms .357 revolver yesterday.  If I can find one for a decent price I'll probably pick it up.  It's a solid metal body so it feels like a real gun, and it's a repeater so no cocking or reloading after every shot.

It's a bit on the lame side as you stick a BB in each "bullet" and they fire through it.  Still, it's  a nice double action pistol and I really liked the feel of it.

I hear you. I bought it not even realizing it was a break action. I was pleasantly surprised...as those CO2 cartridges do rack up over time money wise.

On the plus side, it is about the same size if not as heavy as the real thing. the grips are very comfortable. The one I bought comes with nice wooden grips...but wouldn't it be sort of neat to be able to transfer these over to it. I wonder if that is even possible...not that I would do it to replace the nice wooden ones.

It's nice not to have to buy cylinders for sure, but Canadian Tire sells them for (I think) $20 for 25 cartridges.  Hobby shops and Army Navy stores may sell for less.

It's an expense to be sure, but I'd hardly call it significant.

An elderly relation has recently passed away & one of my Aunts has been helping to clear her property.
She contacted me a few days ago & said "We found an old air pistol in a box, do you want it"?
Well it took me less than half a second to reply & it arrived today.

Apologies for the photos but here it is;
A Webley Mk1 .177 with an almost full tin of pellets.
As far as I can figure out, this particular piece was bought sometime between 1958 & 1964.

An elderly relation has recently passed away & one of my Aunts has been helping to clear her property.
She contacted me a few days ago & said "We found an old air pistol in a box, do you want it"?
Well it took me less than half a second to reply & it arrived today.

Apologies for the photos but here it is;
A Webley Mk1 .177 with an almost full tin of pellets.
As far as I can figure out, this particular piece was bought sometime between 1958 & 1964.

Dave, that's a brilliant earlier Webley!!

I got my first Webley, a Temast, in 1971, and I bought a Hurricane in 1982, and I still have and shoot both. I love them. The one great thing about them is, the spring piston goes to the rearward of the pistil, giving it a firearm like recoil to the rear. Excellent truing gun for a .22 target pistol.

Cherish that pistol, Dave, it's a treasure!!!

New pistol here for the Blamington Hall arsenal

GAMO GR-Stricker. Yeah,great name,but it's surprisingly accurate

Eight shot single/double action revolver,.177 caliber,it'll take lead or steel BBs,or Diablo pellets. It'll give 50 odd shots on a single co2 cap

Cool Kirky!   :pok:

I used to have a Crosman 22 wheelgun....It's here someplace. Kinda like the one PTRSAK spoke of...

Ok. I found it along with my 70's Marksman....re-shot my other 2 while I was out there because...it's all about the Benjamins.  8)  :D

Thanks guys! They both shoot well  but the CO2 (nickel) one has developed a weird problem of the spent cartridge sticking in the tube. Probably brand specific, but I need to work out an extraction strategy before shooting it again. Have an idea of how to do it but just haven't got around to it.

Here are some singles.

Is the black one PCP? What do you use to fill it with?

No, it's a straight pump pistol....10 pumps and it pushes a .22 pellet out at over 450fps.

It looks like he isn't going to stick it out.  Cocking it is a bit too hard on his hands, so he says he is likely going to return it.  Understandable, but a bit of a disappointment as we were both looking forward to the gun.

Picked up this beauty this weekend while visiting the next province over.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Firearms/20151025_172916_zpsnkij4gyg.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Firearms/20151025_172916_zpsnkij4gyg.jpg.html)

Its a Crosman American Classic bolt action pump air pistol in .177.  I meant to buy it while I was on vacation last month but it was supposedly discontinued so I'm glad I found one.

Oh yeah, and it's HUGE.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Firearms/20151025_173025_zpsausovfoe.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Firearms/20151025_173025_zpsausovfoe.jpg.html)

That's it next to my .22 Crosman Mark 2, which is a full sized (slightly large if we are being honest) pistol in its own right.

In fact, the American Classic is so large that it doesn't even fit in a pistol case, so I'll have to find some other way of keeping it safe.

(http://gallery.multitool.org/pbmirror/Firearms/20151025_173051_zpsocnv7pyf.jpg) (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/Multitooldotorg/media/Firearms/20151025_173051_zpsocnv7pyf.jpg.html)

I haven't fired it yet, at least not with anything in it, but it pops nicely with only a couple of pumps, so I can't wait to try it for real.  That super long barrel should be very accurate and I'm looking forward to using it to put holes in things that probably shouldn't have holes in it!

Given that we have two large dogs and a cat, indoor plinking is a bit of a no-no here.  Vet bills are too expensive. ...   :ahhh

Those are fine pistols!!!!!  I had one before the fire and it was very accurate....great for squirrel hunting too. Plenty of power!

That's what I figured.   I have a break open pistol (URX) and a cheap old break open rifle but there is no power behind either of them so Megan and I usually end up fighting over the Mark 2.  Hopefully now we can both shoot in peace!

I had the 1377/ American Classic out today.  Nice gun, I like it a lot.  Good accuracy, good pop, although it is a bit sore on the hands when you shoot for a while.  At least with pump rifles you get the leverage of the stock to work with.

The biggest failing of this gun is not this gun's fault, but how much it gives up to the Crosman Mark 2 .22 pistol that is just so nice....

And with Megan popping off targets with the .22 right next to me, the 1377 just felt lacking.

Moral?  If you don't have a .22, the 1377 will be a great gun.  If you have a Mark 2, everything else seems insignificant.

They are slightly smaller than the 92, the weight is pretty identical to that of the firearm.

My hands aren't that large either and I had no problems with them at all, it does help that I have a lot of experience with the P226 & P228 in real life, But I think you'll get a kick out of them  :salute:

That's pretty much my feeling on it too!

I have certainly handled worse guns though.  The biggest problem I have with this one is nothing wrong with the gun itself- it just pales in comparison to the CO2 powered .22 Crosman I have, which lets off a thunderous boom and huge plume of gas when it's fired.  In comparison the Browning just makes a sad little "pop!"

But, if you don't have a Crosman Mk 2 then you will never have that issue!

I have Benjamin Marauder . this is a crazy accurate rifle. i purchased an after market stock, extended air stripper, extended air tank... and this thing is great! i can very accurately hit targets at 50-75 yrds with a heavy rounded pellet. i was initially frustrated by poor shot groups, but once i realized you have to strap it down and zero it differently than iron sights it was spot on. i am super impressed with this gun and i could've kept it stock and been happy but i needed more shots, better balance and quieter. this thing is comically quiet by the way. birds will not even hear you shooting from 15yrds away! i bought a used scuba tank from a shop and the filler valve. i can get 40 accurate shots with the extended air tank. good gun. well made. super quiet.I got great reviews before purchased from LINK REMOVED and decided buy it .

I have Crosman Bolt Action . .Great for target shooting. This replaces the old Crosman 130 which I just rebuilt. Probably be great for pests if you have a mind to. Won't penetrate 3/4" plywood so a 4X8 sheet is a good back stop. After about 40' it will lose a lot but that makes it a little safer if you miss, but it is a dangerous weapon so care must be taken. It is one of the rated one on the link edited
