Title: Love Windows 10.
Post by: Chako on March 19, 2019, 11:28:43 PM
Got to love windows 10.

Monday...tried to log into my computer after work only to get an error. I tried again and got the same error. I re-booted the computer and got a little further. I tried this a few more times and eventually got a black screen with a flashing window bar. To me, it appears that the computer was in a loop of sorts. I took out the tablet to see what the issue is and to see what the fix might be. I found some info regarding AVG being the cause. This made sense as I had a message that my antivirus software would expire recently. So I figure that AVG messed up my access to windows 10.

Now to fix the issue. I had a bit of trouble getting into safe mode. I turned my machine on and off 3 times to access safe mode. Messy but it works. I tried to fix windows but that would not work. I also tried to roll back the operating system but found out there were no saved points (I had enabled this a while back but it must have either turned off, or never worked).

I then pulled out the recovery USB drive. After trying to boot from the drive twice, I realized I had to change the boot sequence in the BIOS. Once again I tried repairing Windows 10. That did not work. I was forced to format my drive and reinstall the operating system. That fixed the problem. It did not take much time to install things and to get my computer up to speed.

Got to love Windows 10.

One of the reasons I have gravitated to Ubuntu Linux recently. I was going to buy a new copy of Windows 10 when I got my latest PC put together, but decided to try Ubuntu 18.04LTS for the heck of it. Well, lets just say, didn't buy Windows after that.  :)

Had some similar issues with win10 on my wife's machine. It seems to be fine then if you leave it idle it half locks up and you have to reboot to get it back to normal. I had some similar experiences trying to backtrack it and attempted similar routes to fix. It's really frustrating, and I'm really tempted to wipe, after all it was an upgrade from win7. I'm sure it'll clear up a heap of issues,  but I don't fancy getting everything installed and configured again.

Yup! After battling for AGES with Win 7 on a laptop that came new with Win 7 installed, but just kept getting slower and slower, I installed Debian Linux. Works better than it ever did with Windows. The only hiccup I ever have, is it sometimes loses connectivity with the USB ports, one at a time, but only if I've left it on for an extended period, and a restart fixes it every time.

I have win 10 on my work computer, on my private laptops I am still on win 7.

I really don’t understand win 10, on win 7: you install an office pack and BOOM you are set! ...you have the office pack on a disc so you can install it on all the PCs you want.

On win 10, everything has to go through a “Microsoft account” that you have to create, and then you have to do a paid subscription for something as simple as word or excel......yes; you can do a “one time payment” but that is ONLY for that 1 computer and €150? ...really Microsoft? ...really?

I think that’s super greedy of them!

Plus I hate how they have tried to copy Apples idea with the “app” like icons in the start menu on win 8 and 10....it’s stupid and extremely confusing!

If I just want to view a picture; it opens “windows reader” that throws a fit when you want to close it, and it still doesn’t close fully and keeps the file open. So if you want to delete the picture or move the file to an external disc; you get an error saying “the file is still in use by another program”
So you have to “Ctrl, Alt, Delete” - task manager; and then close “Windows reader” from there.

Like; who comes up with this stuff and who approves this thinking it’s a great idea!?

I have none of these problems on my laptop running win 7, and I also have a MacBook Pro running the latest OSX and I have none of these problems on that either.

For reference, my machine is technically dual boot, primary Ubuntu (technically Xubuntu, ie Ubuntu using the XFCE desktop) My secondary is Win10, which is an upgraded win7 install. I did it while it was free. Last week I booted into windows for the first time in 5 months, that's how often I use it, and my main objective was to patch/update it, then I switched back to Ubuntu. I have to say, my win10 install is smooth. Mostly because it's so clean and hardly used.

You can install older office on win10 using the CD and without using the MS account stuff, that's only really if you need the latest and greatest (which while the subscription model of Adobe products makes sense, most people do not need such a thing for office)  All MS are trying to do with the Store is create a walled garden type space like on IOS devices. However you still have the option to choose outside apps.

I tried with office pack 2010 and I wouldn’t install it. It continued to take me to an office 356 website to download the “office pack for win 10” which you need a Microsoft account for.

Classic Shell. Go back to whatever start menu you liked the most. I still have my computer (Win7) and all the work ones (Win10) set up to look like Win98. :D

I only play games that run on linux these days, and since that's greatly reduced, I play fewer games, which sort of works out well.

Wouldn't touch itunes with a barge pole. Since we do a radio show we get sent a lot of music via ipools (not related) so itunes isn't really necessary.

Actually I mainly use my PC for internet, games and playing music (I use Windows Media Player which is on Windows 10 but hiding - you need to enable it) and ArchiCAD when I work from home.
One thing I don't like is the inability to manually order folders... apart from that, the only bad stuff is hearing of others having issues after updates.  :dunno:
Oh and calling programs apps.

Many years ago, my home unit was hit with a virus that tried to ransom my data, I was able to boot via a thumb drive and able to locate all my data, discovering that the “hidden attribute” was checked on all folders and files.

For personal use, I switched to Chromebook for everything household use.   My work issued laptops used Windows, including 10.

Now retired, have two Chromebooks, mine and a unit for wife.  Not a single issue ever.

Will not pay for MSWindows ever.

I did cave recently, and purchased a smartphone, iPhone 7

Yeah....so far...so good it would appear.

Yes, I do not like giving Microsoft more than they can get from me. I CD install Office 2013 Pro. I do not need anything newer. At work we use a newer version of Office that stores mostly to the cloud...which I was never a fan off. I would much prefer to have a tighter security on one computer than saving your docs to some server somewhere else. Just call me slightly paranoid.

My home laptop is running Windows 7 as well. I much prefer it to 10. I updated the home desktop for free when MS was giving out free upgrades. Fact is, It is a bit more convenient for me to use 10 at home as I must use it at work. I tend to stumble a little when I am on my win 7 laptop anymore...it is a bit funny actually. I do like that with win 7 you have better access to settings. That is something I do miss somewhat on 10.

I use my home computer mostly for gaming and work. Oddly enough, I tend to prefer my Samsung Tab A for browsing these days.

Maybe it's my limited contact speaking, but to me it seems like everything is still there, it's just hidden away somewhere behind a fancier interface.

It seems like the auto sleep mode is the key to the wife's issues. Manually switching it to sleep is fine, but if I set it to for example "go to sleep when idle after 20 minutes" from what I've read online it goes into some sort of quasi defrag/maintenance or something (unnecessary as it's running on SSD) and won't wake properly without a power cycle since it's not technically asleep or awake.

The only solution that seems logical is to disable the auto sleep and only manually trigger it.

I had a similar issue with my laptop on windows....
It wouldn't boot up sometimes, unless you hard/soft reset it.
Disabling auto sleep, and only shutting off manually, seemed to fix it.

How bad?
Title: Re: Love Windows 10.
Post by: Whoey on March 26, 2019, 12:58:41 PM
Quite bad. I had left the old HD in the tower when I moved to SSD 3 years ago which still boots fine, and ran a block checker overnight, it was at 300+ when I went to bed and the machine decided to snooze at some point so no idea on the final number as the app closed and I can't be bothered to hunt for logs. The SSD install crashes after windows finishes loading. I used the old system disk to pull off anything that can't be reinstalled, ie photos/docs/etc and config/storage from a few programs, and setup a clean win10 on a new/old 500gb I had laying around (new as in never used, old as in standard SATA hard disk).

I'm about halfway to where it needs to be now... and despite the clean install this standard disk doesn't feel quite as snappy as it was on the bloated/upgraded SSD.  :bnghd:

I was looking at a Kingston A400 SSD for my computer.
240GB for €30 isn't bad. There's probably a catch though.

SSDs are so much cheaper than they were even a year ago. I paid something like 180 NZD for a 500GB WD Blue about 9 months ago; now you can buy one for $112. A Samsung Evo 1TB can be had for $245 now, or you can pay just $204 for a lower grade Samsung with the same capacity. :ahhh

I thought my SSD had become faulty recently, hence checking out new prices. The laptop would freeze regularly and a hard restart was all I could do. Searching revealed this symptom as a characteristic of a failing SSD. Great! Then someone suggested seeing if the RAM cards matched. They didn't, but pulling them out and reseating them seems to have fixed the problem.

Linux Mint here btw. It's straightforward and polished with nice artwork and I like that it's supported for five years. Like most Linus OSs, it's also highly configurable to one's taste. I've used various forms of Linux since the turn of the century. :tu:

From the short sessions I've had with it, Win10 seems OK on the surface. I'd be happy to use it if I had to use Windows only software. However, since I detest MS's snooping and control, I'd never let it anywhere near the internet! >:D

That is a good point. Got this down to a science though. It only takes me an hour and a half to restore everything back to where I like it.
Title: Re: Love Windows 10.
Post by: Whoey on April 21, 2019, 12:33:01 PM
a good restore image can reduce it a lot, plus it means you're even closer to 100%.

it's always nice to have a fallback image.

there's also the possibility of scripting the install... rather than having to input the setup info every time, it automagically does it, plus some other software installs.

not that I use any of this since I'm on linux 99% of the time now.

See this thread and just wanna come in to join the chant.  I recently have my main hard disk die on my PC, and forced me migrate everything onto a new SSD.  And the experience has been nothing buy joyful, everything is easy and painless, and the whole process only take few hours and it's all up and running.

I guess the moral of the story is to store everything important on external harddisk, and follow the 3-2-1 backup rules religiously.  It really pays off at the end.

Just a thought, try a thorough disk scan and probably a memory test.

Most linux live CDs have memtest. (better than using something that is part of windows to remove the doubt) or go built in:
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-check-your-pc-memory-problems-windows-10

disk:
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/disk-error-checking-windows-8

I know memory going bad is one of my top issues that prevented windows running stable (even if other OSes run fine) and Hard disk sectors going bad is probably the 2nd top issue. (as proved by wife's recent failure)

Actually that wasn't the issue. I rolled back to the previous version of Windows and still had the same problem.
The problem was actually the version of Java being too recent for the program I was trying to install (ArchiCAD 17).

The answer was to Uninstall Java. This allowed the install to go ahead and ArchiCAD installs Java anyway.  :tu:

Lucky you. I had to re-do everything 2 weeks ago. Got force fed another update that borked my system. Good thing I am pretty good at reformatting the HD and reinstalling everything. Kept getting hit with the upgrade bug in an accelerated time-frame. I asked a keen friend that teaches industrial design and programming what I could do. He suggest that I turn off window upgrade.

Type in...

services.msc -> find windows update -> right click on properties -> find start up type, and disable it

I looked online and couldn't find this info, and my friend was like...yeah...just disable the service and that should solve your issues. Now I can stop the window updates that bork my system.  :woohoo:

if something like that is happening regularly it could be a sign of imminent hard disk or ram failure, or possibly partial failure

worth running some tests and replace if lots of errors are detected.

Possibly so...but it is an issue I have had since I upgraded to windows 10. The hammer fell just now. System hangs up at 30%. Once I manualy shut the system down...reboot loop.

Not looking foreward to restarting once again. I used to get at least several months...now I am lucky to get a week. Getting very tired of this.

Going to buy a new SSD drive today hopefully. Next up will be new memory if that does not work.

Throw memtest on a USB bootable drive, let it run a few cycles overnight and then you can tell for sure if you have a bad stick or sticks of memory.

If you are encountering  such problems soon after a clean install there is definitely some faulty hardware somewhere

Make sure to press "OK" in the popup window. :P

Nothing is more dispiriting than downloading something overnight, and seeing the "do you want to download this?" window in the morning.  :ahhh

Still not home yet.  I talked to one of the techs at a local computer shop...and it appears I may only have a recovery USB drive...and not the one that would do a clean install. He told me how to get the right tool. If this is the case, and the issue...then I will do a   .

X fingers that this may work. The tech guy talked me out of buying a new SSD drive. I thought I had a clean install tool from the start. Not sure if this is the case...but I think not having the full CD is a bit of pain in the butt.

Mine has done that whilst playing Battlefield 1 a couple of times.

This has been happening to my niece as well (Not  playing Battlefield) on a newer laptop.

My brother told me the other day that his touch screen stopped working after an update and he can't get it to work.  This is a less than a year old Lenovo laptop.

Ok, was able to download update version 1709...now trying an update manager to get the newest update version 1903. Just trying this tool to see if it will work. If not, I am prepared to use that other USB drive to nuke the system and re-start all over again.

Ok...first and second attempt to install 1803 update did not go so well. Got to 100% and froze at startup. I did a hard reset after an hour of frozen activity and it gave me an error message and it started to re-download the file. I went back into services and stopped the download and proceeded to do a clear cache in my windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. Now I restarted the window update service and I guess time will tell. At least I am getting somewhere beyond what I have been doing for months now. I still haven't nuked my computer using that new USB tool.

Not sure if I mentioned this...but there was no error in my memory...but I kinda knew that considered the update always froze at 30%, and I never saw any issues running windows other than the update function.

I may have gotten even further now.

I was forced once again to update...which once again caused my system to loop boot. This time around, I booted from the USB Windows Media Creation Tool I created last time. I made sure to format every boot partition I could find. This time, Windows looks very different. After checking my version history...looks like I am now up to version 1903. X fingers this is the one that will be stable. Only time will tell. Now I have to go back and make everything as I like it...which will take some time.

excellent!

My latest battle with Win10 over the automatic driver updates on my laptop.

Windows installs a much newer intel graphics driver, but it is total garbage and makes any game unplayable with really bad shearing... so I have to manually install the last manufacturer driver which works fine, until windows decided it was old and replaced it again... eventually had to make a registry change to force windows to leave the drivers alone. But it's an all or none case, which is sort of aggravating as I would actually only want it to leave the graphics driver alone.

I do want to wipe and clean install that laptop, but it's my only device while I'm working abroad, so I don't want it out of commission or go through the setup of everything right yet.

it's ironic as I was speaking to my brother in law about it a few weeks back and he was telling me about a guy he knew who wasn't a big geek or gamer, but it was part of his daily routine to play an hour a day (he was retired) and was gutted when they killed it off. The latest Windows 10 upgrade installed on my computer last night before going to bed. Today, I get back on the computer and it competes the install. However, it tried to force feed me Microsoft Edge in a serious way. I did not agree to anything and shut my computer off. When I re-booted it, Edge was in my task bar as well as on my screen. I attempted to remove it but couldn't. I was able to remove both on screen visible links to Edge. I also made sure that Google was not altered, etc. I am sure if I went along with the prompts, I would have selected Edge as my main browser and something equally horrible as my search engine.

The update is version 1909. Just a heads up.

Sneaky sneaky Microsoft.  :poh:

Here is the OS build # for my current update. I am running Windows 10 Pro.

18363.900

I did not like how MS Edge was displayed front and center and did not give me any options to opt out short of rebooting my computer. The choices on the pop up screen was accept and accept. Are things so bad in the US that Microsoft can get away with this heavy handedness without fear of reprisal from watch dogs, etc?

I never liked Edge...even less...Bing.

Found this...

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-sysupdate-windows-updates (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-sysupdate-windows-updates)

Now I am actively looking to see if I can delete Edge from my OS. I figure probably not...but I will look into it.

UPDATE: I found this...a blocker toolkit to disable automatic updates to Edge for enterprise customers. .

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-blocker-toolkit (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-blocker-toolkit)

something in the new update hosed the wife's laptop pretty good, didn't behave until I updated MS teams, sadly she needs to keep it installed for her Masters revision coming up in a few weeks, but I did both update and keep teams from starting with windows, which is a huge part of the issue. Edge was also very pushy this update.

Shouldn't you just be able to go into the settings of your preferred browser and set it as your default?

Yes.

However, it attempts to trick you into accepting their web browser and search engine via a one way on rails choice...meaning no choice whatsoever. It basically forces you to reconfigure your settings as it gives you no choice in the matter. That is what got me angry about Microsoft's recent attempt at monopolizing.

SteveC, Windows 10 does not ask you for permission. It will feed you updates and do other things in the background all on its own. Microsoft says it is so that all machines out there are updated and get the new bug fixes..but it can be highly annoying. My older computer couldn't get the updates and would crash every-time stuck at 33% install. In fact, that was so bad that I had to re-format every-time towards the end. Worse yet, I could not defray the install for a later time. My new build takes these updates with no issues.
