Not my idea, this is an exact copy of Dave's The great Leatherman show-off thread. (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,18149.0.html) ;)
Only the names have been changed. :D
THE OBJECTIVE
The idea is to add to the thread by posting a SOG Tool (no knives/folders) or Variation that hasn't already been mentioned.
Copy and paste the numbered list of tools already mentioned and add your own tool, with pictures if you can to make it more colourful.
THE RULES
1. To add a tool to the list - you must own one;
2. You can only add one tool per post;
3. Factory variations of tools (including colors) count separately (e.g. BO, TiNi, ect.)
4. Discussions and suggestions from all members is cool, just don't add to or copy the list in your posts unless rules 1 to 3 are valid! (So it stays easy to follow);
5. It's my thread so all decisions on whether tools are valid or not are up to me.. :D

2. PowerLock
Just a side note, but there are several "transition" versions of the PowerLock. A full "2.0" model has the new pointier pliers, the gear guards, and piano locks. But during the transition, SOG sold Powerlocks with only one or two of these new features instead of all three at once. I suspect they were simply using up old parts until the bin was empty before switching over. :)
Yud's PowerLock for instance, has the 2.0 plier head, but not the gear guards or the piano locks.
....we now return to our regular programming...... :P :D

fascinating I did not know that thanks :tu:

I guess I'm not sure. :D Hmmm, lets call those ones "horizontal" David. Take a look at Pacu's CrossCut from a few pages back, which are the other style. :)

Submitted for your approval...
I think this could be considered a variation, I've carried it a while.
Powerlock EOD V1 with old head, no V cutter and no Patent numbers.
I've also got two more with the old head, one with v-cutter, one with scissors, don't remember about EOD or Patent numbers.

Appleman SOG brought out a range of gold coloured TiNi coating MTs a number of years ago , they really are nice in a tarty kinda way.
Here is all my Golden SOGs , shame SOG does not make them any more :(

Picked up this PPP but branded Harley Davidson. The main blade also has HD on it and the plier head say Harley Davidson as well as the sheath.

Nice!

A goody for sure! :tu: I like how SOG made a special mold to cast the Harley logo onto the plier head. Makes the tool more special than most other rebrands, in my opinion. :)

Found some brass slotted hardware to make it easier to pull the PowerLock apart. It's nice to use a screwdriver and a hex hey as opposed to two hex keys of identical size. I think the high contrast look of brass on black doesn't look too terrible either I guess. ;)

I got SOG to send me a serrated blade to replace the seat belt cutter. When I tried to install the blade it would not fit. Looking at the seat belt cutters thickness found the blade was just a hair thicker.
Thirty minutes on the sandstone and it was a perfect fit.

fascinating I did not know that thanks :tu:
so should we mark it as
2. PowerLock (2.0 plier head transition)
We could try that :) (We'll have to wait and see what that Allan guy thinks about "variations" though. ;) I hear some days he can be a real ogre) ::) :D
Here's a full on PowerLock 2.0 for comparison:
1. Power Plier V1
2. PowerLock (2.0 plier head transition)
3. Power Plier V2
4. Switchplier
5. Crossgrip
6. TiNi Power Plier
7. Paratool with Blackie Collins sheath (Blackie designed the Paratool)
8. PowerLock 2.0
So do the new 2015 Powerlocks use those piano locks on them instead of the one piece of steel that locks the tools in place?
-
They still use the one piece design as far as I know.

Do you have to use the same tool the entire month? Or just as long as it's a Power-model?

Probably pick your power model and only use that. Check out all the juice threads. They picked whichever variation they wanted and stuck with it. For me it will either be powerlock or powerduo

I was afraid of that, LOL. EDCing my PL for a month will be daunting. At work it won't be a problem, but my days off... that's a big, heavy tool to lug around in street clothes. I may need to see what smaller sheaths I have that will still fit a PL. Hmmm

Yea, but I think that is due in large part to inactivity. I'm just trying to do my due-diligence since I have some of the new models. Maybe Grant or Tom Munch will swing in with PowerPlay pictures (HINT!) Then it will be like a regular block party in here

I thought there would be a "What's your latest SOG" thread, but apparently I was wrong.
Anyway, got a CrossGrip and four CrossCuts, one of which is USA made. Pretty happy about these.
Also I got to see first hand the infamous CrossGrip Phillips driver. :D

Need some help here GLBM.
Got this too today! :woohoo:
SOG’s are not my speciality, although I have a few. This is my first Power Plier. Never used and needs a good clean after sitting in a box for I don’t know how many years. Hoping you could shed some light on which version, age, etc?
These things have tons of tools...they just keep folding out, and folding out...just amazing!
I know you have a few

Fantastic find, Max! :like:
Version 1. Which has the coolest pliers head ever crammed into a multitool. :)
Age is an issue. Nobody here, as far as I know, has definitively discovered the true release date of the PP and even SOG doesn't have the old records anymore.
That said, general consensus is early to mid 1990s at the latest. I lean towards 1994 myself, but that is just an unverified hunch.
Perhaps you could,, if you find the time, use your outstanding research skills to obtain an exact release date, Max? :pok: :dunno: :salute:
Edit:
Photos left to right: V.3(regular NN - polished and small bolt section), V.2(blunt nose with mid-size bolt section - polished), V.1(blunt nose with large bolt section - unpolished).

See the extra little hole on the edges of the handles? That was only on the V.1, and V.2 and V.3 had the ring on the pivot.

Thanks GLBM :hatsoff:
Done already... :pok:
SOG filed three patents between 1993 and 1996 that were refined and re-submitted due to not being unique enough. The patent that they eventually succeeded with (US5809599A) was filed on Dec 1996 and awarded in Sept 1998, titled Compound pliers tool with linked handles.
SOG stamped Pat Pen on their PP, which they would not have been allowed to do before filing...which would have been linked to the first filing on Nov. 29, 1993.
So given production ramp-up, your hunch of 1994 would be correct. This would be the earliest production models of the PowerPlier with the Pat Pen stamp. I’m assuming none exist without this stamp.
The patent document show the compound design nicely. If you want some interesting reading (incl references to Leatherman’s patent and others), here’s the link to the patent https://patents.google.com/patent/US5809599A/en (https://patents.google.com/patent/US5809599A/en)
Delighted I have a version 1 and it’s mint. Still amazed that they crammed 6 tools into each handle!

The tool density is great indeed! And the whole hand-finished look and feel of the PowerPlier is quite special.

Happened to be giving my Pocket PowerPlier a clean and comparison to its bigger brother, and noticed the patent number is stamped on the side, placing manufacture on or after 1998...I wonder if any PPPs have Pat Pen stamped?

I have a post about the three PPPs in the collection. One does indeed have Pat. Pend. on it, with Edmonds, Wa. instead of Lynnwood - like the PowerPlier.

Ok good info GLBM. :hatsoff: So production of the PPP probably started around 1996 with a production run 20+ years which is impressive indeed.

Thank you for the information and the work you have done to answer some lingering questions!
Impressive indeed!
SOG's older models weren't as refined as LM, Vic and Gerber. But, all in all, they seem to me like the most "working man's tool" MT. The PowerLock, PowerPlier and PPP are some of my favorite tools to handle. Glad to see a fellow MT enthusiast enjoying some of that former SOG glory. :salute:
Sadly though, last minute cost cutting on their newer tools has nearly driven SOG into the toilet bowl. :-[
-
One more patent oddity. Most of the early PowerLocks have "Patent 5809599" stamped underneath "SOG PowerLock".
I have one PowerLock with just "Patent". No Pend. or Patent number.
The prime differences(other than the patent thing) between it and most older PowerLocks are the pliers, saw and SE blade. The no patent number pliers have the small crimper only and have a sharper grind polish instead of the high polish of most early PowerLocks. The older saw is fine cut(& shorter with a more curved profile) while the normal saw is aggressive cut(& longer). SE blade has a different serration pattern as well.
Pics. Left is no patent nunber version and the right is the patented version.

Good info GLBM and fun playing detective.
I can imagine the marketing guy saying to the production guy “we must put our patent number on the tool!” and the production guy saying “but we keep getting our filings rejected so we don’t know what the patent number could be!”
So I suspect that the one with just Patent stamped is probably towards the end of their patent submission efforts, when they were confident their patent application would succeed, so around 1996.
These stamp tools would have been expensive to make and outsourced, so it may even have had a number that they had to file down?

Thank you for the good work, Max! :salute:
The PL with just Patent on it looks to be have been produced that way, and not changed later. The pliers head has USA cast in at the pivot base(which I should have pictured, but my brain is scattered). Perhaps they made a batch where they said "well, we don't know the Pat. #, so we'll leave a place to engrave it later." Then nobody bothered to ever change it. Maybe it was an early demo tool or prototype?
When buying it, I almost couldn't believe it. A mint OG PowerLock without a patent....odd. Hit the buy it now button pretty fast.
-
I probably wasn’t clear on the stamp. What I was getting at is that the tool SOG used to stamp the logo and patent wording may have been modified on the one with only ‘Patent’ stamped without the number. These stamps would have been outsourced with probably a long lead time, so SOG may have simply filed off the number...just an idea to explain why they had the word ‘Patent’. And it does seem to be in the same place as the later stamp that they would have had tooled up when the final filing was awarded. I’m guessing it is a stamp though (like mine) and not a tungsten point engraving method of marking, which could have been just a CNC program adjustment...
-
Thanks for clarifying, Max!
-
And just for a little more fun, here’s a closeup of the earlier logo design when SOG was based in Edmonds (on the PP) before they moved down the road to Lynnwood and settled on the newer angular logo. :salute:

Cool! :like:
If it would help, I can take some more close up photos of each generation version of the older SOGs. I think there are a couple(or more) of angular insignia styles if memory is correct.
-
Definitely will help GLBM. I cannot find any reference to SOG moving premises, I’m guessing it was a capacity issue sometime in the mid-90’s as they were still a young company at the time. Tracking across a few of the models from that timeframe will help, also to put the logo into a timeframe.
The PP I got came with a great colour fold-out brochure stuffed inside, so I also plan to scan this for reference. Lists all their MTs on one side and knives on the reverse. Address as Lynnwood on of brochure, so presumably they had inventory they updated after the move, or may have been added by the distributor later.

The idea, I had in my head about pictures of tools helping, didn't resolve as imagined. But, in their lackluster state, here they are; for whatever they're worth.

Lots of variations GLBM. Yours pics are clear enough so we can document these differences. I’ll cross-reference what’s in the MT Encyclopedia to see what lines up and if there are discrepancies. :tu:
-
Many thanks for you work with all of this, Max!
It is really cool to see some SOG information being uncovered. :)
SOG is really the only brand board-represented on MT.o that lacks a strong information base. :ahhh
Oh course, SOG doesn't make it easy with their lack of records and information.
-
The brochure that came with the PP lists the “P2” (Power Plier), the “P3” (Pocket Power Plier), Paratool (“Another great design from the team of Blackie Collins and Spencer Frazer”), the ToolClip and the Micro ToolClip. This brochure pre-dates the Internet, so a great informative reference. Difficult to photograph because of reflections and size. Will need to be scanned. I’m certain we can add some good info to build out the encyclopedia. :tu:
-
Wow! That is nice, Max! Thanks for posting that one! :like:
That is the oldest brochure for SOG MTs I've seen. :o
Looking forward to the scan.

Got a new to me SOG PowerLock in black oxide. Came in pretty good shape. Just needed a good cleaning and some WD-40. Didn’t come with a sheath so I am going to have to look for one.

That is a an uncommon one, JonesE! :like:
The piano locks weren't used for long on the early PowerLock 2.0 versions before going back to the solid lock lever. USA made too(indicated by the hex bolts). :)

Thanks for the info on the PowerLock GLBM. I didn’t realize the piano locks were that rare.
Great job finding a very nice Master Mechanic PPP. It sure looks nice.

SOG tools may be a bit finnicky, but I think they are still worth considering when buying a Multitool. :)

Finally got a very early SOG PowerPlier V.1. I have a V.1 already, but it is a later one with the nail holes. The early one has the nail nicks, and I had been looking for one for a long time. Bought this one "used", but it had no issues aside from needing a cleaning.
The V.1 I had already will see some pocket time now, since it has light signs of use. :woohoo:

Necro boost....
I have got a treat for you. I've recently found a PowerPlier I couldn't quite place. It's an early V1, but with different features.
- The logo stamping is different and on the right face handle on both sides is a stamp indicating "BOTH HANDLES 9" or 22,5cm"
- On the plierhead the nose is slightly thinner and the upper teath is smoother and less visible to the later V1 counterpart.
- A larger gap under the compound leverage is noticable on the older prototype.
- Finally the ruler on the older prototype starts from the edge of the slipjoint instead of the tool end.
I've emailed Spencer Frazer about it.
He responded and said:
"Hihi . You have the first series of Powerplier where the engraving was somewhat crude. We refined it many times. I don’t think it is more exceptional than that but it definitely is a cool piece and represents our early endeavors in the multi tool industry. Thx for reaching out. Sf"
He called it a crude piece XD. To him it's an unfinished product not worthy of being proud of.

First of all, welcome to MTO .
What a great first post, and what a great find :o.
It's always great when you get to know some "inside info" on a new tool, and certainly when it turns out to be quite something special.
I found this beauty a while ago (see pic), not as special as yours, but to find a SOG over here is already quite special, and to find one of the old ones, new in box is a one in a million deal over here, so I was really happy that I was the one who stumbled upon it :D.

My new POWERLOCK EOD. Really going to like the balisong like opening right out of the box.
-
Does anyone can help me dating those three twitch II ?
The first one predates the patent validation (or is around it) so I suspect it to be from 2005-2010 (But maybe it could be narrowed down a little more?)
I bought the middle one in 2013
The last one is more recent, but still I don't know when did SOG change to the current the logo ? 2015? 2017?

Why did I want all three? because I'm nuts, and most of you are crazy too .... :P

I was gonna claim I'm only 2/3rds as crazy as you ('cos I only have the "Patent " and "Patent 5809599" versions )
But then I remembered that I have 12 other gold TiNi SOG MTs and one black TiNi MT, so maybe I'm actually crazier ?

This is a show-off thread, so show them off.
I am particularly interested if your black TiNi is a TigerStripe....
The only TiNi that keeps escaping my grasp is the T65 power plier.

Sorry, I'm too technologically challenged to be able to do photos on here.
The black TiNi I have isn't a Tiger Stripe, it is a plain black T50B CrossCut. I do have a couple of Tiger Stripe Powerlocks, but don't think they are TiNi.
I do have a couple of TiNi Power Pliers (one with Blunt Nose pliers, the other is Needle Nose)

If you ever want to trade a Powerlock Tigerstripe for a BlackTip or a Paladin PT540. Feel free to msg me.

I'll prentent I did not scroll through all pages of this thread in awe and amazement :ahhh

Some prototypes and tigerstripes.
The Switchplier Deluxe never went into full production.
The orange Reactor is an OTS (off tooling sample)
The Tigerstripes were impossibly difficult to find.
