Nice :DLarge chopper, yes :tu:
I do believe Mike has a large chopper that's very similar ;)
I don't think there's any hard and fast rules
If it's a big lump then stick a long shaft on it :)
Maybe have a look on Gransfor Bruks's website for an idea of scale http://www.gransfors.com/htm_eng/index.html :)
I may have the biggest chopper but you certainly have the longest shaft :D
:twak: John, I need one of those now
Thanks Guys
I didn't take a picture of the head end on as its not nicely finished
It would have looked a bit better with a dark wedge in the end but when I got the head almost on to see if it fitted I couldn't get it back off :ahhh so in the end it got hammered properly home with no wedge ::)
Thanks Nuphoria
Here you go, I did have a go at wacking in a wedge but it wasn't very successful ::)

Lovely work that mate :tu:Indeed.. :tu:
Thanks Guys,
It wasn't too hard to do,
I was going to wait until I found a nice long piece of Ash log and try spiting it to make a handle the proper way, then these turned up ;)
That turned out nice Tony. There wont be a safe tree for miles around now. :D:-[ :-[ :-[
Oh, I get it now....
GF: "Hey boss, can Tony chop down the apple tree?"
Boss: "Eh, not really, its a bit ropey but..."
GF: "He's stood out front with an axe and big smile on his face... let's not upset him :) "
Boss: " :o <gulps> Eh, yeah sure, whatever makes him happy." :ahhh
Who pissed you off today? :pok:
Chop doors down :tu:

Nice job Tony. :salute: Leave the handle will ya.. :pok: 8)
This was made between 1930's to the late 60's
It's so pitted the only markings I can make out is the number '55' but these look to me like they were stamped after it was made :-\
I have tidied up the badly sharpened edge and point, still don't know if I will re-handle it yet :D

Hand made silver Ax
It certainly looks like one.
If you can get hold of a copy of "the Axe Book" by Gransfors Bruks, it's got a some good info in it. Not just trivia, but techniques or effective and safe use (safe for you AND the axe). There's also stuff on storing firewoods etc if it's relevant to you. It comes free when you buy one of their axes, but I'm sure you can buy them seperately too.
Definitely a nice looking tool. I'm sure you'll get plenty of use and enjoyment from it :salute:
Nice axe Sparkey! :tu: :)
Thanks Mike :salute:Wow :o you do have a big chopper Sparky ;) Oh and I see your electrician knife, sweet, I carry the one you gifted in my bag, its great :tu:

I'm glad you are using it Mate :tu: Zed very kindly sent me the one in the picture (its only for old sparkys) :salute:
If you have a spare half hour look back through this thread, its a testament to my lack of will power when it comes to choppers :-[
I have been playing, not 100% on this idea yet :-\

Rusty or Shiny?
Inc blades, Ax heads, lumps of rust and future projects?
Oh and inc hammers?
I have swapped and given away a few Bill hooks an Axes for presents
A couple of Axes are 'on loan' and may be returned/swapped
How long is a piece of string?

I have been trying to finish off a thing or two before the Sheffield meet

Ah well, at least it didn't do you any damage (other than your back of course). ;) For future reference I believe you should make the first cut on the front of the tree i.e in the direction you want it to go. The second cut should be made a little higher and on the back of the tree. Hopefully it'll then gently fold over into the hinge you made with the first cut and lessen the chances of it doing anything nasty like jumping up at you unexpectedly. :)
Love the look of that Spearwell Tony.
Whats the average price you spend on an axe head?
i have been looking for something small and non-chinese here in aus for MONTHS to no avail
Dealers go round the car boot sales early as well, it’s a bit annoying but I have to have coffee before I leave the house ::) (maybe that’s why I buy lots of rust)
:twak: Dealers
:D
Went out to the garage to play with some plastic today, started tidying and ended up finishing this one off :)
I had painted it with some engine paint that I had laying around, it matched the flecks of original (I think) paint that were on the head when I bought it last June
36” long and aprox 4lbs
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/Axe/25022013006.jpg)
Cheers Tony, although I hope you're not saying my lump 'aint pretty :D
Now you messed that lovely axe up by using it.... ::)
I don't know if you were aware but its a bit wet an windy in the UK at the moment
Got asked to tidy up a conifer
Decided to take 'Swampy' out for a change (hes a bit of a shelf queen, normally only gets any use on special occasions)
I forget how nice he is to use, really well balanced (although today did remind me to slim the haft down a bit )
Raining all day today so I came home a soggy old Sparky ::)
Fun day :tu:

You know how much fun I was having :D :D :D
A most excellent adventure!
And it's better for everyone if my top only comes off in the dark
You certainly made short work of it, by the time we had got back with the towing straps the branch was laid down and you were nearly through it :o
Who did the other side? Did they give up? :pok:They were just checking that my GB Forest Axe was sharp, it feels different working on freshly felled branches :viking:

Looking good mate. How are you liking the weight/length ratio now?
Great looking axe! Looks hardy used and still has the label on the handle. That handle should be to hard to straighten. But would proably be easier to rehang it. Is that even a word? :D
You're going to try to use your steam thingy and some strategically-placed weights to unbend it. :pok:
Thanks very much to Al for the pictures :salute:Good looking axe Tony. Have you tried it out yet? :)
