It might be a good idea to dig this thread from the dead, isn't it?

So here are some of mine:

starting from the latest, an old publicity smooth green 58mm alox (Heuliez, a car/bus body manufacturing brand):
it might be from the 80-90s? look at the variations with current gen 58mm alox:
oldcurrent
StampVictorinox Switzerland Stainless RostfreiVictorinox Swiss Made Stainless
fileNail cleaner tipScrew driver tip
Scissors pivotScrewBrass pin
Scissors springBlackSilver, more curvy, opening blades larger

here are the ones i currently own (from top to bottom):
- Heuliez smooth green Alox
- Silver Alox
- Red Cellidor (?)
- Black Edition
- Black Edition (two is one, one is none.. right? )
- StayGlow
- On the left: old green Cellidor upgraded to Titanium

I also bought some Fashion series 58mm that i gifted to relatives for various reasons (like 5 of them i think)

Sometimes the smaller things are the most under estimated.  Like 58mm SAK's. I have 91mm's and a few 93mm's, but I can say in all honesty, that my little 58 on the keyring is my most used pocket knife. Period. It's always there on me, and I can't leave home without it. People who know me know that I am a fanatic for the most compact tiny piece of gear that actually works at it's intended task. A bi-product of years of ultra light back packing I suppose. Small monocular instead of binoculars, soda can alcohol stove instead of my old Optimus, peanut size pocket knife instead of a larger stockman or barlow, and a Fenix E01 instead of a AA mini Magalight. I worship at the shrine of maximum minimalism.

I LOVE the 58mm!!

Bottom one is about 15 years old, and has seen a LOT of use.

Well, the 58mm is a great series, indeed. The Classic lives on my keychain.

And I really like to carry the Rambler as my EDC knife/tool. Loving it. The Classic is not bad, but I really like the extra thickness of the Rambler. Oh... and the blade opens the correct side (oposite to the keyring - what I highly prefer)

Here's an assortment of alox MiniChamps and Classics.

Glad this thread was given new life.  I'll have to snap some pics of my 58s soon.  I love these very capable SAKs.  I was obsessed with the minichamp for a while but I've settled on the Manager or Classic.  I've given away most of my minichamps except 2.

Here are mine

A classic with wood scales I made, another that is a 125th, a Signiture lite, Mini Champ, and naked Wenger thrown in for good measure.

I've only 3 at the present, but I love them all.  I've always been astonished at how sharp the blades are on these capable little knives.  The left one is an 85 Classic, my first that I got brand new, the middle a Minichamp (one of my favorite SAKs), and the right is a Space Sweeper that I picked up new last year.

Why do the blades open on the 'incorrect' side? Is there a good reason or is it an oversight?

From left to right
Midnight Minichamp, Minichamp, Manager, Classic SD, Companion,

Bottom,
Rogue

My Manager lives on my car keys while my Minichamp now lives on another keychain tool set up I have.  I generally have the Classic SD on me when putting around the house.

I tend to carry a pry tool to compliment my 58s.  I love having my Shard and 58 together and since I've lost my Shard I now use the pry tool pictured.  They make a great combo.

The scales appear to be some early plastic / ivory replacement maybe celluloid

The inlay is very neatly done it a very nice little knife.

I picked up another yesterday of a similar age but the scales have been given a nice wood grain effect ... i will post some pics when I clean it up

That inlay is spectacular.     I've never seen an inlay like it on a SAK.

Is the blade steel stainless or carbon?

Look forward to pics of the new one.

Oh... sorry. I didn´t read your replie. Well, IMO the 58s are great for keychain carry. Or with an added lanyard on the keyring. The Classic knife blades opens on the side of keyring. The wrong side for me. Most of the time something is in the way or needs be kept back from the blade.

The Rambler opens on the right side - opposite to the keyring. So the extension with the lanyard even provides a better grip and nothing is in its way.

That´s why the Rambler opens correctly while the Classic opens incorrect.

But that´s just my point of view.

I have 4 of these.
If I show my knives to others (family, friends,...)  they look first at those little ones, they do have appeal.

The Victoria Princess repost:

As for me it's a vintage model for sure all with Victoria tang stamp, exposed rivets construction and older cross-cut nail file.

Actually I'm pretty amazed how they peening down those tiny little rivets in this thin 58mm one layer model...it's for respect.

I'm not a huge 58mm frame size fan but I like any riveted SAK, if you know what I mean.  ;)

So it's a 620 model or...? I appreciate if somebody can help with exact identification... :tu:

You would not believe some of the stuff that little knife has cut down! It's broken down a LOT of cardboard boxes for recycle bin, and other cutting that I would have thought too much of fit. I've used it like I stole it, and it keeps on working.

That would have been Sgt. Mike. He came across a road kill deer where the accident had just happened. Since he was a LEO, and he knew the officers on the scene, he did a sort of asset on the accident scene. He was on the way home with his better half from a semi formal function ,and just had the little classic with him. He field dressed the deer for transport to a meat processing facility for feeding the homeless shelter folks. He said the classic was a little slow going, but it did get the job done in the end.

Years ago, I was at Mesa Verde National park, and a park ranger did a demo on how well the old stone tools of the cliff dwelling indians worked. He had a rear haunch of a roadkill antelope on a table, and he took a single flake off an obsidian nodule. The flake was a finger size piece of black obsidian the size of maybe the main blade of a 74mm executive. That flake of stone sliced right through the antelope hide and meat like a sharp paring knife. He skinned and sliced up the haunch with very little effort. That demonstration was one of the first eye opening events that influenced me to smaller knives like the 58mm's and the Case peanut like my dad carried.

Most times just a little piece of sharp is all that's needed.  :)

Thanks Andi. It seems it's an oversight on Vics part then. I may have to mod mine then - Shouldn't be too difficult.

The scales again seem to be some sort of Celluloid but with a nice wood grain

That inlay is spectacular.     I've never seen an inlay like it on a SAK.

Is the blade steel stainless or carbon?

Look forward to pics of the new one.

my oldest 58mm

From aprox 1930's /40's (Oh and the nicest 58mm I have :) )

Stamped Elsener Swiss

Jadar:

That is a beauty!   :2tu:

I see that the file is a real file, not that stippled thing that comes on the 58mm today.  What are the scales made of?

The scales appear to be some early plastic / ivory replacement maybe celluloid

The inlay is very neatly done it a very nice little knife.

I picked up another yesterday of a similar age but the scales have been given a nice wood grain effect ... i will post some pics when I clean it up

The USPS came through today. New 2015 dark blue Classic shown with the current EDC Cadet. I wasn't quite prepared for how small this is! The Alox scales definitely shrink it down a bit. May need a Mini Champ for a bit more to hang on to!    :D

EDIT- Or maybe a Rambler. Can someone tell me how much thicker the Rambler is compared to the Classic? I imagine at least a little bit, the Philips/caplifter looks fairly thick.. Thanks in advance.   :salute:

This one gave me serious headache - it actually crossed the Atlantic three times because the German postal service was utterly incapacitated due to strikes of customs, was unable to find my door and finally too incompetent to keep hold of the package for longer than three days so I could have got it.

But finally it arrived, my LBJ-gift Bijou.
If it could only talk and tell a story...

Just add scissors and you have the Rogue, which I like better than the Rambler. Flat driver is a better pry tool than the SD nail file plus can handle #2 Phillips, and the standard nail file can do most screws that the Ramble 3D Phillips driver can. I like the standard nail file for cleaning under my nails too.
I have one on my keys.
I have some Rovers and Bijous and if I ever get around to it will mod the Rovers to make Rogues

Thanks for your answers!

1st one is a Bijou, with early version of the nail file
2nd one is a "common" version of the Deluxe (the ones with gold coloured Victorinox stamp are the rarer ones)
3rd one I don't know...
4th one appears to be the Classic Gold Ingot (1 gram gold inlay), they simply don't have a toothpick

And there are no KR, so it more closer to Bijou, am I right?

Weird, why would they make a plastic version... maybe it is some kind of sample version?

And you're right, the Gold Ingot is a Classic so it should have a keyring, and this one doesn't have one.

Crazy stuff you got there, with also the one with the cut&picker blade  :D

Just add scissors and you have the Rogue, which I like better than the Rambler. Flat driver is a better pry tool than the SD nail file plus can handle #2 Phillips, and the standard nail file can do most screws that the Ramble 3D Phillips driver can. I like the standard nail file for cleaning under my nails too.
I have one on my keys.
I have some Rovers and Bijous and if I ever get around to it will mod the Rovers to make Rogues

TazzieRob,
Your comment inspired me to add a Rogue to my meager 58mm SAK collection. The mailman just dropped this one off this morning. It has some pocket wear on the scales, but the tools/blade appear to be unused  :tu:

Nice one!

This one has the blade away from the keyring btw

Yeah, that's my department! Quit it!

Companion, Classic, Talisman, Signature.

I love how thin the companion is. But I don't mind the others. They're small enough.

On the way: Scribe, Midnight Manager, Rover, MiniChamp.

ITS HERE! (took 8 days longer than I expected, but I am always very optimistic when it comes to shipping times   :-\ )
First 58mm SAK, a rambler, and it will be my new edc (maybe by itself?!).  :like:
Really like the small size, I have small-average hands and it is comfortable to use with a few fingers, tools are easy to take out, and easy to close with one hand.
Was not expecting the weaker springs, but everything is buttery smooth and snaps back.
The little philips is great, and the toolset will pair very well with my Hiker out walking and camping.  :drink:

Edit: Forgot Pics!!!

Congrats!  :tu:

I carried the Classic SD on my keyring for many years and used it frequently. Then I found the Rambler not that long ago. IMHO the combo tool increases its utility several times over. I've got a number of Classic SDs, and a couple old ones I put new scales on as they original scales were badly cracked and chipped. Probably won't see much carry time any more with the Ramblers and MiniChamps. The newest of them will be used as "giveaways" to people I encounter that have done something deserving of a token reward and would use one.

As many threads and posts in the Swiss Forum I am sure you will find plenty of stuff like that but you might have to really go digging :D Sometimes I just go through the list of pages and click random numbers and then open up several of the old threads just to see what I can find  That's why I bring old threads back sometimes :D

Thank you NorCal, sadly I don't know much about this knife as I usually buy 91mm and 84mm sizes, but I liked the case that it came in, so that's why I bought it.

Current 58mm collection.  The translucent blue Manager gets the most use, and I've never used "The Mountains are Calling" Classic SD

They can get a little carried away whenever they see a crown cork.

The orange Alox caught my eye but I do like T&T available so I don't have any 58mm Alox. I carry my Classics in rotation but in my pocket not on a keychain.

My grail 58mm is this. It's a Swiss cycle clothing brand and my one Classic that's a shelf queen.

I made my own leather keyring sheath for my beloved classic. Simple pouch sheath, wet formed so it fits like a glove and takes almost the whole depth of the knife for security. Makes it easier to use not having it 'attached' to the keyring, but as a pull out tool with nothing attached to it.

I found my little sheath with Classic at my local flea market.  I was super stoked but traded out the Classic for my Manager by wet forming the sheath.  I tried to make one but it didn't turn out so good.  I quickly looked on the net and yes Etsy results as well as few others but they weren't quite like the one I have.  Mine is really thick leather pretty well stitched.  I should have another go at making my own.  I enjoy the process of making things but lack skills .  I think I'll have another look around since posting my little sheath and seeing CBL51 and pfsantos recently.

Yeah, I had one of those. Once.

Then I made my own from heavier leather wth better sticking that held the knife more secure.

That was always a concern of mine too.  The risk of losing the knife, plus the additional size has kept me from using them.

I pocket carry my 58's too.  For my Minichamp, I cut the tip of the small finger from a leather glove for a sleeve.  It's worked for the past two years really well.

FB, when you get it, please put up photos of both sides's back springs and liners. It seems to have a width of 6 on one side and 5 on the other. I'm interested to see how it's set up. A nice one, serrated blades are a nice addition.

Thanks all!  At first I thought it was a MiniChamp XL at a quick glance because of all the tools.  But was equally excited to see some Cutco tools in there.
Should pair nicely with my Spyderco MiniChamp.   Now all I need is a 58mm w/some Wenger tools to round out the modified collection.

lichan, here are some of his words about the springs, etc.
"Clip-Point and Serrated Blade are from a Cutco USA 1888 model knife. I added small spacers to match the hole size inside the pivot on CUtco blades and added a third back-spring with a brass spacer between Cutco blades. I modified the serrated blade's tang so it would sit below the liner. Very cool project, it took alot of planning to get it to work. "

I've always thought of the little 58mm's as the mighty mites of the SAK lineup.

When I was a knife nut, my very favorite pocketknife was the little Case Peanut. It was small enough to drop in a pocket yet it could take care of most things I would use a pocket knife for. Now that I have downsized to only owning SAK's, I find the 58mm to be my new "peanut." It's so small you can forget you had it on you until you need a knife. Or a scissors. Or a little screw driver. Or a tweezers. Or a toothpick.

The 58's are like a .22 caliber firearm; Very under estimated.

Very nice. Somehow 58mm isn't the main part of my collection, but I've got a few. I'll post a picture later.

I have some VVV - bonnen left and was thinking of a alox MiniChamp. But now I see that silvertech 58mm and now I'm in doubt! Silvertech is so nice!
Too bad that the VVV-bonnen can't be switched for money. Not much stores who still accept them.

Right. Not to be ungratefull, but gift-cards aren't the nicest gift to give. I'd much prefer (to give anyway) a nice card with money in it. Money, the universal gift card.  :D

The old paper VVV never expires. But stores ade opting out on this one. It's replaced with a VVV Card. Which also never expires HOWEVER after the 3rd year they deduct €6,- from the credit to 'maintain' the card.

Anyway. If you have VVV bonnen or cards, Bever accepts them and they sell SAKs  :)

I have a few and there's at least one that I can't seem to find as well as a Rambler that is truly lost.

Now the leather case is home made to protect my favourite one, a blue Deluxe. The Alox [Edit] Executive is new to me and has the older, cut, nail file. I have a question about this one though, how rare are these? I'm considering replacing the scales and rebuilding it into a wood Bijou (with T&T and visible pins) but I'd like to check if that's a bad idea. The blade has the full four lines "Victorinox; Switzerland; Stainless; Rostfrei" opposed to "Victoria" and the crossbow if it makes a difference.

Since last summer I've been an enthusiastic carrier of the 74mm executive. I love the new EDC of my life, the exec. But seeing this thread, and all the neat little 58's in it, I went and got my old classic out of the sock drawer where it has been gathering dust. It's now in my pocket. All because of the forum. I feel like a semi reformed alcoholic that wandered into a bar and fell of the wagon big time.  :o

AHHHHHHH!   :ahhh

At least accumulating SAK's is a heck of a lot more economical than collecting boutique brands like GEC and Case.  :D

And since most of them are red handles, the better half doesn't know when I get a new one! ;)

I think this might be the most appropriate place to put this. Honestly the number of different places is kind of overwhelming..

I wanted to make a locking mechanism for the blade on a 58mm SAK...I pondered it for an hour or so...

and this is what I came up with:

maybe someone has come up with something better but I find this works like a charm. The pen works as part of the lock, when extended the blade can't move. However, if you retract it, the collar can be slid right off the blade. The blade functions as a great awl now, something I couldn't do safely before.

Cheers,
H.G.

For 58mm? If you like the mod, cheers. It's rather an easy fix but not necessarily the best one. I never use the blade because it closes way too easy. Now I feel more confident testing its limitations. I find the pen blade on the manager to be a surprisingly decent awl in my experience.

I never had an issue with the blade for general usage, but like you, I respected its limitations.  I am hard pressed to find a sharper blade anywhere, except perhaps the Opinel.  I just admired the creative thinking behind this mod.  I never would have thought of it :D. You're definitely right about the blade making a good awl!

Barry, look at me, this is serious. If you want a knife that cuts like an Opinel, but without the wood swelling issues, get the Victorinox florist knife. Thin, thin edge, rugged nylon scales, and slices and dices like an Opinel. I've never had one before and picked up one at a gun show two months ago. I'm amazed at this knife and wish I'd got one a long time ago.

Here's my oddball photo...

I wanted to add a Classic to my pocket EDC kit, but one with Cellidor scales was too thick to fit in the case and I didn't have a spare Alox.

But I did have a Bijou missing one scale (that I used for my Mini Champ Plus mod: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87486.0.html ).

So I popped off the other one and it works great. The exposed rivets keep it between the straps on the outside of the case.

I pulled out some of the contents for the photo. From left:
- 2" hex bit extension
- Hex key with ends slightly shaved to take my hex bit coupler
- Selection of hex bits and coupler (The hex bit coupler fits on the inline Phillips on SAKs, with a slight shim.)
- Swiss-Tech Micro-Slim flat wrench in background

Some other stuff in the pocket EDC kit case:
- 2 foot tape measure
- Rare earth magnet
- Scotch and electrical tape
- Matches
- Needle and thread

A few of us got on that bandwagon straight away! There's a separate thread here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87288.0.html

I’m proud to show this recent achievement to the club…

✅ Complete color palette
They look great! I'm still on the hunt for a citrine (transparent yellow). Lucky for me, I've found a couple of transparent orange ones.

Of course! I have a Lime Twist one.

I have quite a lot of the 58mm knives. Getting the whole group in one photo would be a little tricky.

My "sweet berry" arrived :D:

Also bought a simple Rambler:

I also noticed a strange thing: the "coarse" part of the nail file seems shorter in new SAKs.The grey SAK at left is about 4-5 years old.
Did anybody else noticed it ? ???. Maybe it was already discussed in the forum?

I've never noticed it, but I'll give all of mine a look. And The sweet berry is very aptly named!

Taking my homebrew alox rambler for a spin. It’s no longer on my primary vehicle’s keys, but I swapped it on for the day.

Anyone know approximately how many lumens the current LED scale light puts out and what the battery life is? The LED used in the 58mm line, like the midnight mini champ or manager.
