Title: Different SOG plier heads
Post by: cryptrick on October 30, 2007, 08:20:26 PM
Dunc recently did a post about the Swisstool plier heads, the different types and the year they were each produced. I was having a look at my SOG Powerlock and noticed that SOG seem to have a couple of different plier heads out.

This one...

and this one...

The top one had SOG stamped three times on it and the other just the once.

Does anybody know the differences between them and/or why it was changed?

I don't know, but maybe the next time Chris drops in he can enlighten us?

Looks like you got one of the PowerLocks with the new pliers but the old handles.

All the above listed info is correct. Changes for the EOD 2.0 are

PianoLocks
Gear Covers
New Plier Head
C4 punch

All other tools will be getting the following upgrades through the remainder of the year

PianoLocks
New Plier head
Gear covers

The Power Assist is still a little ways off, I am going to say that the date is now looking like the beginning of 2008.  Sorry to bring such bad news.

Congrats!  The new pliers are much improved!

It looks like the teeth on the new plier head are still "rounded off" and aren't sharp like every other pair of pliers out there :twak:

Those wire cutters are monsterous though!

Important points, both of them.

You're correct that the PowerLock teeth are rounded but my photo may have caused some confusion.  The SwissTool Spirit is in the left panel of the photo.  Its teeth are also rounded.  Here's a photo without the Victorinox logo cut off:

Hmmmm. I haven't got a SOG with the new plier head, but I can say my old ones don't seem as "grippy" in the center toothed section as other multitools.

Maybe because the SOG tooth profile isn't as acute as others? I'll have to do some testing and report back.

Yea, that's what I meant to say.  The inner nut gripping teeth are "blunted".

Thanks for the info you lot  :)

Nice to know I have the newer version then. The wire cutters are brilliant, I don't think there is a better multitool out there in that department. So this will be the plier head on the new PowerAssist when it comes out, am I right? I'm really looking forward to that tool.
