Title: Some custom Opinel
Post by: Michel M. on January 14, 2014, 10:05:57 PM
Some of you asked me in my presentation to post some pictures of my custom Opinel. It's not a multitool (except the #10 with corkscrew), but here are some in different styles. All with fileworks.

A deer antler #10 :
(http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/17/45/69/42/10vri_10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=49&u=17456942)

A Bahia rosewood carved #10 :
(http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/17/45/69/42/10vri_11.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=50&u=17456942)

A cocobolo #2 :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/2i_coc10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=86&u=17456942)

A carved Elforyn #8 with a polished blade :
http://www.servimg.com/image_links.php?i=3

A ziricote and reindeer #8 with aluminium inlays and basketwork scrimshaw :
(http://i45.servimg.com/u/f45/17/45/69/42/8vri_l10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=2&u=17456942)

It was a projet for the 20 years of a French craftmanship materials supplier. He gave everyone a material and the knives and other object were published in a commemorative book.

#9 roe deer antler :
(http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/17/45/69/42/9vri_c10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=48&u=17456942)

#9 with deer antler, amboina burl and chamois horn :
(http://i71.servimg.com/u/f71/17/45/69/42/9vri_c10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=81&u=17456942)

Another #9 in stabilized and dyed elm burl :
(http://i45.servimg.com/u/f45/17/45/69/42/9vri_e10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=4&u=17456942)

I'll show more if you are interested in.

Thanks a lot enki_ck. The first difficulty with this one was to use metal tools for the blade groove. The scrimshaw took time also.

How did you cut the groove for the blade?

Oh yea....... BEAUTIFUL work by the way!

Thanks to all.

How did you cut the groove for the blade?

Instead of using a small circular saw for wood and other materials I used the same kind of tool for steel (sorry I don't know the exact translation, fraise-scie in French).

The Deer Antler one looks  along with all the others!
Title: Re: Some custom Opinel
Post by: Michel M. on January 15, 2014, 08:30:32 AM
Thanks CanadianLMfan. It's hard to find the right deer antler with the "crown" for a #10. This one was perfect for that use. For a #12 it's easier.

The roe deer antler for the #9 was also an exception. Usually this material suits for a #6 or #7 only.

Thanks to all.

How did you cut the groove for the blade?

Instead of using a small circular saw for wood and other materials I used the same kind of tool for steel (sorry I don't know the exact translation, fraise-scie in French).

Literal translation is "strawberry saw", which is a bit weird,  but actually its a slitting saw in English. :) Fraise also seems to refer to mill cutters.

And the work is simply beautiful.

Post by: Michel M. on March 07, 2014, 10:08:12 PM
Thanks Sidhartha for these kind words, knowing your work.

Thanks also Cogito. Not of stone but with materials like Corian or Elforyn wich are a mix between synthetic and mineral materials.
A few years ago I saw some #13 marble Opinel in a knife show by the Opinel Museum in St Jean de Maurienne (The Opinel brand is near in Chambery). It was the work of a stone carver. The knife was assembled but it wasn't folding because of the hardness of the material for cutting the groove.

Clean, simple, easy to clean, hard to hurt, but still elegant.

Now, maybe a bit of a challange, but putting two blades into an Opinel design, say a regular carbon blade and a stainless garden blade? Would you think it possible?

I know a craftsman who dit it. On small sizes it was opposite blades with two rings and for the #12 a standard blade and a wood saw blade on the same ring. It needs adjusting of the assembly ring and the security ring.

I'm late to show you the new ones. A carbon blade #10 with AZ desert ironwood handle. No filework on this order :

(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/10vri_10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=257&u=17456942)

A #8 with jay feathers resin inlay (PMMA center) :

(http://i39.servimg.com/u/f39/17/45/69/42/8vri_l10.jpg) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=258&u=17456942)

It's very delicate for turning but the polishing isn't really a problem.

Hello,
Just finished this morning, two orders for the same model. The only difference are the filework and some details of the woord or carving. Bahia rosewood handle, very hard dark brown/red wood :

Thanks a lot ironraven. You can have a try. I started modding Opinel knives in 2001, trying to improve the technic along the years. Already 13 years, I didn't realize.

We should have more French people here.
French and Italians hold the keys of aesthetics, design and beauty, without meaning to underestimate the rest of the world but that's my opinion.

Just look at that!

Thanks again to all. kkokkolis it's a great compliment. In France we had the occasion to share about Opinel customisation on many forums but the good atmosphere disappeared over the years and sharing also. Thats' why I'm happy to be here.
I also saw nice Opinel mods from Poland, Russia, USA... and other countries. Opinel is present almost everywhere. SAK mods are not in our culture unfortunately.

Great looking knives. How do you manage to do the groove in the handle? By hand, with some power tool (dremel or similar)? I thought about making a handle for an Opi, but the groove part isn't easy, specially when you don't have any power tools...

Thanks. Yes, it's the most difficult part of the work. I use different tools. For wood or other not too hard block materials a small circular saw on the drill press. It needs to be carefull, It could be dangerous.
For raw matérials I use cutting discs in different thickness mounted on the drill press. In this way you have both hands to hold the handle. I found Dremel is not a good solution but some people use it with success..

My son just bought a Number 9 for me yesterday.  Hot on the heels of the Minimalist Challenge, I decided to pack it today with the SI.  I don't know why, but I'm really smitten with this knife already!  I think it even beats, sharpness wise, a knife an old family fried brought back for me from the Laplanders.  There aren't many I consider scary sharp, but this baby is one of them!  I love the custom mods in this thread!

I cut scales for 111 mm Victorinox from the same block and I made a Forester with damasteel blade. I'll show you the result on the other topic.

What do you do with these pieces of  art? You just collect them? Or do you expose them? And sell them?

Most of them are realized to order for users or collectors.

Just picked up a #6 for both my son and I.  Haven't done any customized work on either it or my #9 but I absolutely love them!
