Title: The Great Two Dollar Challenge
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on July 27, 2015, 12:53:30 AM
Lately I have been wondering what would happen ifsomeone needed a tool but only had $2 to spend. Are there any good tools in that price range or would you be better off saving your money for a candy bar?

My plan was simple- go to eBay and purchase the first ten tools I found for under $2 each, including shipping.  Now you'll note in the photos below that some are slightly over $2, because they are listed in Canadian Fun Bucks, and I'd planned to use US dollars, just to be reasonable.

Some of you who are sharp eyed and can count will see that there are more than ten there.   In fact, there may be even more- these are the ones that were Buy It Now for $2.  There were a few that I had to bid on as well, so the last night get slightly bigger.

Also, some of these may get disqualified.  For example,  the pry bar might just be a pry bar, and therefore may not be able to compete with multitools.

Some are knockoffs of actual tools like the CRKT Eat'n Tool, CRKT KERT and Leatherman Brewzer.  These may end up being more fun to compare to the real versions.   The Gerber Shard might be the most interesting of the bunch, as it is (presumably anyway) a real Gerber Shard, a tool I have always been quite fond of.

I'll grade these on looks, numberof functions versus number of useful functions and carryability.

I think so.   If I'd done the $5 challenge the list would be a lot longer!

I'm looking for an OPT with a prybar, wrench, light and thin, but strong, with rainbow finish and under 10 USD?  :D

Any suggestions? I only saw the skull/Punisher tool, but I find it too thick and long and the TiSurvival Prybar which is ridiculously overpriced and missing the wrench ...

Buy a PocketWrench II. I know its above your budget but this is probably the best OPT I have ever seen.

The Pocketwrench II is indeed a hard one to beat.   Assuming you don't have to have it rainbow finished there are lots of good small pry bars available at your local hardware store.  Some might be a bit long but can be ground down into a use able size.

So.... I went a bit beyond ten.

I found a total of seventeen tools for $2 and under, although four of them were bids and not Buy It Now, and may end up being more than $2, in which case they are disqualified.  I can pretty much guarantee that I will get second chance offers on any I am outbid for, so I'm not writing them off just yet.

Even not counting them, that still leaves 13 tools.  There has to be something worthwhile in there.

Well if you have plenty already I can leave it in the drawer. Should of assumed you would be swimming in tools. Had bought a few on close-out one Christmas season for about $6 each. This one is a left over.

Weight for weight I'd rather carry a Snow Peak titanium spork. :pok: Now of I could find  a pair of packable chopsticks.. even tried to carry a pair in a hatband.. :ahhh

Now that the smoke is cleared I see I have purchased 16 different tools at $2 or less.  There were a few more that I was outbid on by a dollar or so, but I will have to try them again when I do the $5 challenge later on.

I'm at work now but when I get back to a computer I'll post all of the tools I managed to get and final prices for each.

A few years ago one could get a PST for about $5 from a TSA auction. Am surprised you're finding anything that low in price.

Most of the stuff I have found is brand new one piece types, the kind that you can cut a thousand out of a $20 piece of sheet steel.

I'm just assembling photos on my computer, I'll start posting them later.

That's interesting, the "widgy" bar has a 1/4" hex driver.  Not seen that feature on cheap "widgys" before. I need to look harder.  Seems an obvious feature which at a stroke makes it "multi"

That's perhaps the worst possible location for a bottle opener on #2, there.

I get the feeling with some of these tools that the designer wanted to pack as many functions in without actually thinking of how they would be used.

The thumb over method of opening bottles could indeed be very bad with that particular tool.

Nice wide range of $2 tools. I'm curious to see which are the best. :)

One tool I didn't see in your initial list, though, are the ~ $1 multi tool cards: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=multi%20tool%20card&rt=nc&LH_BIN=1&_trksid=p2045573.m1684. Could be that might be a contender.

This one is a copy of the Raker Ring Tool and the production version, the CRKT KERT.  Given that Ray Kirk, owner of Raker Knives and Steel is a friend of mine and a member here, part of me is very angry at the knockoff, and embarrassed that I have bought one, but I am also proud of Ray because his design was obviously good enough to knock off.  And, I am conducting an experiment, and it met the criteria, so here it is.

This looks like a copy of the True Utility Key Tool (http://www.trueutility.com/collections/all-products/products/tu247) but the reality with this one (and a few others) is that this may not be a knockoff- it could very well be made by the same factory that makes them for True Utility, and these are merely unbranded versions.  More info on the True Utility KeyTool (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,45616.0.html).

That's perhaps the worst possible location for a bottle opener on #2, there.

I get the feeling with some of these tools that the designer wanted to pack as many functions in without actually thinking of how they would be used.

The thumb over method of opening bottles could indeed be very bad with that particular tool.

My thoughts exactly.  I am not a fan of things that go between your fingers in any defensive situation, and I think anyone that promotes that kind of activity is an idiot.

Many times people have looked at one of my SAKs, folded out the awl, made a fist around the knife with the awl poking between their fingers and said "this would be a really dangerous weapon."  I usually roll my eyes and comment that it's a good way to lose a finger, and that if you have time to set up the knife like that (or keys, or pull out a multitool to stick between your fingers) you probably had more than enough time to get away and not be in that fight in the first place.  But, idiots are idiots....

Not so sure if this one is a multitool in it's own right or just a device to carry EDC items that just happens to have a bottle opener and wrench.  Multitool Dream Catcher?

I have often thought about providing a better translation for venders when I buy stuff for them.  I see what they are saying, but Google Translate obviously didn't!

I think the "not afraid of flowers" comment is hilarious!

This one seems very similar to the True Utility SciXors, but without the extra functions.  If it is just a set of scissors, then it may not qualify as a multitool and therefore may fare very poorly in this challenge.

This one is obviously a copy of the CRKT Eat'n Tool.  Like Ray Kirk, Liong Mah is a friend and I feel bad supporting people who are ripping them off, but this experiment is not complete without testing everything.  And, I am going to test these against the originals too, so that should be interesting.

I really look forward to these tests.  Of course, the best $2-ish tool is a beat-up, yet well made knife one may find. I paid double for an old Imperial USA pocketknife, and it's been the best I've had! Well-made and sharpens easily. One of the blade tips is broken, but I don't mind it at all. Vic Classics are about that used.

I usually scoff at these cheapo gimmicky tools. This may change my opinion or prove my beliefs on these cheapo tools.

Is that carabiner a knockoff of Leatherman's, or would this company be their supplier?

Title: Re: The Great Two Dollar Challenge
Post by: Grant Lamontagne on August 04, 2015, 03:23:27 AM
I'd say it's a knockoff- same with the CRKT stuff and Leatherman/Pocket Tool X Brewzer.   Leatherman's stuff is made in USA (for the most part) so I doubt very much that an Asian company would be selling legitimate Leatherman stuff out the back door.

CRKT stuff is also not likely to be sold out the back door since if they found out about it, that factory would lose a large contract.  Likely these are just being knocked off.

The True Utility stuff is very likely the supplier just selling the same things as I believe True Utility only brands existing tools rather than designing or producing anything of their own.

Agree with Cody. A decent used knife doesn't cost much more and would give better service. Some of these gimcracks may have more utility as a wrench or pry lever, but most appear to be awkward to use, and some are actively dangerous to the user. Looking forward to see if your evaluations prove me wrong.  :D (Don't lose any fingers)

Nice going Def. You got a few pieces I didn't get last year. Interested in seeing how this plays out.  :tu:

Yes, most if not all of it are clones of OEM tools. When I did my thread last year, I  quickly found out that China manufacturers, especially EDC GEAR would copy ideas from crowd source funding, quite often publishing a tool before the actual inventor could get his/hers up off the ground, usually in a thinner cheaper material than what the original inventor was going for.

I was about to toss in the Ninja Wallet here as it cost me Php70 here in Manila, Philippines.  Exchange rate is USD1:Php45 approx so this would be like USD1.6.  I'm sure what we (or I have in my wallet) is a China copy.  I have to admit being surprised as well that an eBay.com search showed me that the Ninja Wallet to be around USD9.99!

Problem with the Ninja Wallet is that, well, it's actually in my wallet.  I have a habit of keeping loose bills outside my wallet to prevent from having to pull it out (and confirming/showing which pocket my wallet is in or what cards I carry in them) so having to pull out the Ninja Wallet outside for whatever is somewhat against a second nature.......

I was thinking that it might be kind of fun to make a bit of a game out of this.  Guess which one will arrive next and the first person who gets it right will win that tool- after I review it of course!  :D

So, which contender will arrive next?   :pok:

A replica TAD skeleton will open a bottle OK, but the difference between the two is huge.

Here's my 3 copies (I left one of them as-is and modified the other two), got them as group deal for $4.99 total.

Very kind of you boss... but honestly I think it would be cheaper for you and easier for everyone if you just sent people new tools... as you're not subsidized by the Chinese state (to my knowledge Mr. Jimmy Wang) and they won't pick up for your shipping costs, the shipping would probably cost 7-8 times more than the tool itself...

I do have a few of these cheaper one piece tools and generally use them for opening bottles (cap lifters), prying and opening envelopes. I just leave them in the kitchen, the office etc., but rarely carry them.

The problem is that many are two small, for me, to use, even as a bottle opener.

The classic, for me, is the multitool card (I have a few...). This has a decent bottle opener, and after sharpening the cutting edge can be used to open mail, easily

Grant, the card comes in two sizes, but based on what you wrote you only got the larger one. (see picture)

The small one maintains the cutting and bottle opening capabilities of the larger one, but is small enough to be, easily, carried in a wallet. Their price is about the same.

I have been starting the testing with the most important function of any multitool, the bottle opener.

Despite looking almost exactly the same as the CRKT bottle opener, which works quite well, Contender #14 (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,61335.0.html) was unable to get a grip in the lip of the bottle cap and was therefore unable to open it.  It did however manage to move the cap slightly enough that I heard a Psssshhht of gas escaping, so it wasn't completely useless, just close to it.   ::)

Fortunately Contender #7 was able to step in and open the bottle when Contender #14 failed.  Score one for Hand Stab....   ::)

Contender #16 (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,61440.0.html) was also very close to being useless, although did, with some discomfort and effort manage to open a bottle.  I first tried hooking the teeth of the skull and lifting the top but that didn't really accomplish much.  Then I hooked the bottom jaw instead and pushed down on the top of the skull, and as I said, with some effort the cap finally came free and I was able to sample the sweet ginger ale inside.

I've purchased a bunch of beverages that require bottle openers so I will hopefully get around to testing them all.  So far Contender #7 is in the lead, beating out Contenders 14 and 17.

I have tried a few more bottle openers since last night, and oddly enough, Contender #11 (shoddy Nite Ize DoohicKey copy) is the best of the bunch so far, quickly lifting the cap off quickly and easily- just as easily as Contender #7, but with a fraction of the overall mass, making it more carryable than Contender #7, and therefore better for EDC.

Disappointingly, Contender #10 (aka the Leatherman Brewzer copy) needed to grab and lift the cap in three different places to open it.  I hope the real one is better than that, although I did find it reminiscent of how you have to open bottles with the Squirt series.

I have now tested the bottle opener function on all of the tools that have arrived so far, and strangely enough if I had to pick one based on bottle openers alone, it would be Contender #11, which would have been much lower on my list of initial impressions.

Just to help keep this all straight, here's a spreadsheet I put together listing the details of all the tools.

You'll note that the "Value" category is empty, at least for most.  This category will eventually be populated with "Yes" meaning it is worth the price paid or "No" meaning this tool is not worth even the small price tag attached to them.  This is my personal estimation based on the use of each tool, and could vary from user to user, as with any tool.

That's the problem with just guessing wildly. I had no idea what tool #5 was, until I just now went back through the thread. Turns out, number 5 is the exact same OPMT I've already got. xD

I'm on vacation, about a thousand miles from home right now (pictures later!) so the introduction of new tools is pretty well on hold until I get back, by which time I believe the remaining three tools will be in.

I'm using this time to catch up on posting initial impressions and thoughts on the glut of tools that arrived before I left, so hopefully everyone will have a realistic idea of what is out there for very little.

Make sure to watch for the remaining tools as we enter the home stretch of The Great Two Dollar Challenge!

Sure, but you have to find and pay for it yourself!  :-P

My computer is having issues as well. I don't imagine it will last too much longer, and in fact in many ways I'm surprised it is still going now.

I just added write ups for Contenders 5, 6 and 15.  There won't be any more added until next week since I won't be home to check the mailbox until then.

So that's it- take your time and enjoy them!

I was gone for two weeks and this project was on hiatus as a result.  When I got back I checked the mail and found only two more tools had arrived, which was a bit surprising.  I would have figured they would all be in by now.

When I opened the packages the next surprise was that Contender #12, the weird round scallop shaped tool was not in fact the weird round scallop shaped tool but another weird round tool, perhaps somewhat more useful.  Even so I contacted the seller and they are shipping out the right tool, so it will be interesting to compare both of those when they arrive.

I'm not sure how many weird round tools there were in this challenge, but this is the weird round tool I thought I was getting:

(http://gallery.multitool.org/var/resizes/No-Names-and-Cheapos/Two%20Dollar%20Challenge/Outdoor-EDC-Creative-Scallop-Type-Stainless-Steel-Multi-tool-Opener-Keys-Hanging/%24_57e.JPG?m=1438569958)

And this is the weird round tool I got:

(http://gallery.multitool.org/var/resizes/No-Names-and-Cheapos/Two%20Dollar%20Challenge/Outdoor-EDC-Creative-Scallop-Type-Stainless-Steel-Multi-tool-Opener-Keys-Hanging/20150921_170003_resized_by_AVG_Image_Shrinker.jpg?m=1442921474)

Maybe I am not supposed to notice the difference?

The actual tool that arrived actually does seem to have a lot more function and is probably better than the tool that was ordered so maybe they thought this was an upgrade that I wouldn't complain about?

You do lose the clip, and the hole in the middle looks useless - maybe it is for twisting bottle caps.    :tu:

The final $2 Challenge Contender is in!  And, it's actually branded as a True Utility Tool so it may not be a copy.

As with many companies, True Utility doesn't actually manufacture tools, and I'm not sure they even design them.  Either way, the tools are produced in inexpensive Asian factories, and this is possibly either a legitimate True Utility version, an illegitimate version (ie real one sold out the back door) or possibly a copy.

At any rate, it's been a busy evening of toilet repair, lock changing and shower head replacing so I'll report more after I've had a proper chance to play with it.

With the impressions of Contender #8 (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,62417.0.html) finally having been posted I am officially declaring the Great $2 Challenge to be complete!

Here, once again are all the contenders, with the exception of Contender #8 because I think the cat may have knocked it behind the couch and it's not worth the effort of looking for....

And here are my findings/notes from the entire Challenge:

The Great #2 Challenge is finally over and I can say that it was not the waste of $32 that I thought it might be.  I will admit to being somewhat impressed by a few of these tools- anything with a YES under Value I consider to be worth $2 or less.  Seven of the sixteen tools were considered worthwhile, which is almost fifty percent- a much higher average than I thought.

So, if anyone thinks there isn't still a few bargains to be had out there, think again- and if you are thinking of cheap yet effective Christmas gifts for people on your list, it might be worth having a closer look at some of these!

You want a photo of my laptop?

Actually, it is a lazy Susan on top of some beaded placemats on top of a table runner on top of the table.  The black and silver thing on the left is my Toshiba Satellite laptop.  It looks identical to the pic below except it has been beaten pretty hard over the years and has stickers all over it.... but you know that because it has been in many pics here before!

There were a few others but they didn't quite make the cut.  I got Megan the hair clips posted earlier in the thread but she's afraid to try them because the exposed sharp edges might leave bald spots.

Some people just aren't willing to sacrifice for the sake of an honest review.

Thanks for the heads up on that. If you read back in the thread or check out the thread I made for that tool (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,62113.0.html) you'll see that I considered it better than the actual tool I ordered.   That's why there are question marks in the value column- I have no idea if the ordered tool is good value or not, but I do kind of like this tool.

Now I know where it comes from.
