Title: New Theme bugs
Post by: Whoey on July 14, 2016, 05:25:49 PM
We realize that in spite of a lot of work done before launch there is still some tweaking to be done for various devices.

Please let me know of issues you encounter here.

Enjoy the new look!

Is there a way to auto-detect mobile users, and adjust what the forum displays accordingly? Clicking "reply" significantly slows my phone (Samsung galaxy s3) down, I suspect because of all the smileys. Ca they be hidden by default, and have a specal button that will open them in a new window? (Similar to how the "More" buttom works?)

Also, avatars are taking up a disproportionate amount of space, leavin little room for posts.

It does resize and hide a lot of things by default on mobile devices.

I see your phone is 360x640 I haven't gotten all tweaking done, especially at low resolutions like that, all the devices I tested on where higher than that...

using chrome, windows 8
can you have less space between the various lines of text in the thread?  (it seems to have double spacing instead of single between lines)

it just spreads everything more, making a post longer and harder to read.

A lot of wasted space on the left of the screen, the avatar takes up a 1/4 of the screen on my computer . Did we lose the like button and also ranking / post count on the avatar.

Will we get the click for larger picture feature back ?

This will definitely take some getting used to.

Yeah, I know its old (how sad is that? 4 years old and its obsolete). I like seeing the avatars, but there is just way too much space being taken up. The spacing  between lines is pretty large too.

I would lose the Rambo knife from the edged forums menu. It looks like an invitation to get this site blocked from many places

Not a bug, but a theme formatting suggesting. For thread listings like on this page, probably a bit better to run the border-bottom: 1px dotted #bbb; code that is on post_container in the CSS on bwgrid instead for each post. It would help more to separate the posts, more like what you see on this page separating sub forum areas: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=forum.

Actually we can customize for each subsection with this new theme very easily. I'd like to get the mods to run some comps or something for new icons to save me some legwork  :pok:

I know... there's so many little things like that I glossed over while drooling at how fast it is on everything... partially due to a lack of formatting in some areas like that and PMs. noted.

uh... what resolution are you running on your computer for it to be 1/4 of your screen...

Sadly the "like" mod and the new theme do not get along.

click the person's avatar for a bunch of profile stuff that's hidden (part of being more mobile friendly is not having all the info visible for each profile on every post) add that the more we show, the less real estate available for posts...

Click for larger pic was breaking the automatic resizing on mobile devices since it was fixed width. Maybe in the future.

I am seeing double line breaks for each line return, I'll have to track that one down...

I do think there is value in displaying post count and post ranking though.  It's good to know who the "tribal elders" are.

Search is in the right top corner on desktop and right below the MTO logo on mobile.

Modify post icon. It stays there for you for the 3,5 hours you have to modify your post.

Yeah. That's the problem with minimalist design themes. Sometimes they go a little too far and eliminate from consideration some common genre design elements that increase readability.

Yeah but before it had in the search if you wanted to just search this topic, or the entire forum, or search the entire forum with Google, which allowed you to hit just pics and when you were after that specific one made it very easy!

Is there a reason that when you select 'Replies' it does this?

its at 2560 x 1440

Last thing I noticed for now. Clicking the green "new post" indicator next to subforum names (such as General Tool Forum) does nothing, but clicking the indicator next to threads opens the threads. Can we make it so the indicator opens the subforum?

Another design suggestion when looking at the threads.

The signature/badge area is gray. Because of that, it has a good bit of contrast with the background of the page, and thus more emphasis than the actual post. So it draws the eye a lot. Typically it would be better to have the post have more emphasis, or at least, not have the badge/signature area stand out so much.

Selectable search is a mod, it's on my todo list as it does not install cleanly on this theme due to it's custom nature therefore requires me to dig a little deeper to get it working.

no idea, please send me your setup so I can further test it.  >:D I do not have this problem on 1920x1080

I know what you mean, but in the subforum case it's notifying you of new posts in several threads so perhaps it's encouragement to look at what the posts are... whereas on the threads themselves it jumps you to the first unread post of that thread. IMHO this is the same behaviour the old section icons had, but now we have a different section icon setup... so the green square is a fair trade off imho.

There's a number of these tweaks I need to look at. As is we launched a bit later than planned, so we did rush it out the door a bit. Also our starting point was far from perfect to begin with.

Is there simply timeline? I don't like unread as then I loose new posts if read once already. Maybe I am just slow that I go back to threads already read.

I see the problem, in line 34, 4th word, it should be changed to d, and all will be sorted.

Avatar spacing issue has been fixed, for my phone at least. Once I removed Signatures, the forum is readable again. Still a bit more white space than I like, but still good. Thanks Whooey!

Is there a way to "request desktop version" please?

This is the desktop site.  And the mobile site.  There is no longer a distinction in the site format, it just provides all of the info and your browser organizes it the most optimal way it can.

Many of the problems we are encountering is due to the vast array of devices, browsers and sizes, and how they all interpret the new info.  It takes time to optimize it for each size, device and browser, which is exactly what Micah is trying to sort out now.

I'm not complaining, to be honest though, I liked the previous format just fine in its simplicity. I know there's tweaking still going on and I trust Whoey and the rest of you cyber-gurus will get things fine-tuned eventually  :salute:

No quick reply, again.

Too much white, harsh on the eyes indeed. Maybe make a couple of colour schemes available to choose from?

Avatars are kind of big but generally pleasant. I think the online/offline indicator should be moved before the username. Multiple quotes look better now  :tu:

I liked the two different colour tones separating the posts. Sig area attracts attention from post and personal text gets lost in there somewhere. Also, personal text beneath the avatar is gone?

Post count is nice, at least keep the ranking?

I was beginning to like the Like function but I can live without it.

Tx. I was looking more like thread list at time oder. Like unread and replies shortcuts at the top but simply threads listed without filters if I replied or have read messages.

Oh, one other thing. I think the little button you click to read to the last post in a thread could do with a bigger size or something to make it stand out. I am inclined to click on the username but that's just me

Is there a reason that when you select 'Replies' it does this?

its at 2560 x 1440

Comparing the "Unread" link with the "Replies" link, the latter is missing the width = 100% on the table. To be perfectly clear, there's the div#unreadreplies with a table.table_grid immediately underneath it. I think that table needs width = 100%, adding it makes things look better.. (Here's a screenshot showing what it looks like with the width added.)

I think the new theme is cool. Sure, there's some problems here and there, but I don't want to pile on. I'm sure redoing this whole site was a gargantuan effort. Hopefully this helps.

I can't figure out how to see signatures anymore. I don't have the option to hide them selected, but I don't se any

I do really like the new layout. Much better than the old mobile site, IMO. and much faster than forcing to the desktop site on my phone.

I changed back to the old theme for the time being, it was much clearer (for me), especially on my mobile phone :salute:

Although I do appreciate the effort, my mantra with things like this is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it

OK, now I feel like one of those elderly people who hates change

Although I do appreciate the effort, my mantra with things like this is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it

OK, now I feel like one of those elderly people who hates change
:o I find the old theme terrible to navigate on my phone, less so on my tablet, but it's crazy high resolution... The new one is much easier and loads much faster for everything I've tried it with so far...

Sure it is a good effort to create new. Just often takes some time and use to get all in place.

Post count is nice, at least keep the ranking?

You should be able to see everyone else's nuts.  ;)

That's a good point. I'm finding my eyes hunt around more for the actual post content amongst the post headers, footers, quotes etc. than with the old layout.

Apart from certain people being nutless, though, :D it's not really the same.

Not many people know what the little nuts stand for, I suppose, or how many of them for which "rank". Maybe the nuts would be more visible if they were placed under the avatar.

I always liked the self-sarcastic titles such as No Life Club etc. (Abandon all hope ye who enter here  ).

Oh, well. If I had to pick just one thing bugging me, that would be hunting around for the actual post in all the visual info.  :)

The profile age thingy doesn't seem to stay put, I'm either 100 or n/a, and while both might be true, I do have an actual chronological age, and an expiration date that hasn't lapsed quite yet.  :D

Also IMO, the merit badges should just be there without the gigantic MERIT BADGES label overpowering the whole area. Maybe just a style thing, but Captain Obvious pointed it out to me.  :D

That makes it much more readable.  Major improvement!  The too white look was really hard on the eyes.   Now I can read it at least.  The only other thing Id comment on is that is it necessary to have the forum icons so large.  It feels like how windows 8 felt wrong because it was designed for tablets and standard PC but used the same feel on both.  It feels touch screen centric vs standard mouse.

I do really like the new layout. Much better than the old mobile site, IMO. and much faster than forcing to the desktop site on my phone.

So, I still can't figure it out. How do you view signatures now? Should they show up by default?

Had notice the listing of the replies are scrunched to the side using a Samsung Grand Prime phone.

Also having a hell of a time clicking other numbers with my finger on the smartphone. And tried like 15 times to hit the 4 and ended hitting 3. Most the time pressing 4 nothing happened. Any chance to get a small square around the numbers to take a bite? have even tried increasing the font size using zoom and 4 just won't take the hint.
Was trying to add a photo to Grant's bottle opener thread and took me literally 30 minutes to get to the final page to highlight that massive wall of text and add an entry on the Grand Prime. :ahhh

On the old theme I always use the desktop view on my mobile phone. I like that crazy high resolution of the desktop version on my phone. Gives me good overview and I can scroll really quick that way, and when I want to read something or click on something, I zoom in.

But hey, I'm a weird chap and probably one of the very few who uses the desktop version on a mobile phone so don't mind me  :D

I do really like the new interface on the computer though!

Unfortunately you can set only one layout preference on your account. Would be great if I can set it to old interface on the mobile devices and to new interface on the pc

Not so much a bug as a convenience for those of us who are link-tapping challenged...
Tabbing to a new link is iffy. When tapping and holding a link there's no indication in the CSS script to show if a link is actually being used/pressed or if it's empty space...
I use Firefox on the dumbphone as a browser so I can swap to another topic and not have to wait for the refresh. Saves on overall bandwidth too.

I liked the two different colour tones separating the posts. Sig area attracts attention from post and personal text gets lost in there somewhere.

That's a good point. I'm finding my eyes hunt around more for the actual post content amongst the post headers, footers, quotes etc. than with the old layout.

Yup, me too. I would prefer alternating shades for each post - funny, they are alternating in the 'Topic Summary' below when in 'Post Reply'.

I find the quotes and signatures pop out more than the actual posts and wish all that stuff was smaller and less conspicuous.

Also there is a lot of empty real estate at either side.

But THANK YOU for fixing the white!  :tu:

it's not a theme bug, it's an SMF bug... noone seems to know why/how it happens but usually clearing browser cache fixes it.

Yeah it's not bad. Kinda fun at times. I got some users avatars pretending to be badges following me around tonight. Zbergs and the engineer from Team Fortress (right?)

Haha

And whoeys right if this happens to anyone else, clear cache and sign back in will do it.

I'll using the old theme, but occasionally on my phone, when tapping on a link to enter a board, a pop-up dialogue box will appear with a question asking if I wanted to leave the page I was on. It's an inconsistent occurrence, though.

If it helps, I'm on a Lumia 640 XL running Windows Phone 8.1, using the Internet Explorer app that is integrated with the OS.

Is there a way to have the pics stay resized when they are quoted ?  I've noticed that some pics that are hidden from view when quoted are full size when you click on them ?

Yes, same as last year, wouldn't really be thread killer without doing so.

...if the thread is still alive, the last person to post before it runs out will win.

I think Mods, since they have to post a lot as part of their job, and, from what I hear, get paid by the post, should not be entitled to such awards

that's not a theme bug, that's an SMF glitch.

I don't see anything wrong with the data in the database, yet obviously something is glitching out. It seems to randomly happen to a topic every now and then... although now that the forum database is over 1GB in size it seems to happen with greater frequency which is a bit worrying...

Ok, a little late but I found it! I was wondering where that scroll bar thingy went! Ever since the colors got changed it disappeared, not because it's not there but because it's the same color once it goes down a little! I know it's not much buts been driving me nuts not knowing where it is.. lol
