Holy crap that's adorable!

I've never seen that type of cat before, but I think I need to get one now, as it looks like the feline equivalent of the Welsh Corgis I grew up with!

We have two cats, not pure breed, rescued/adopted as kittens... they are not sisters, but sure act like it. They bring a lot of joy to our household.

Only problem I have is when he gets down I make sure to put my hand over my bits, he is some how quite light  ??? he dose not feel like 68lbs. luckly

Neil you guys can get a hypoallergenic dogs such as a Poodle or Buchon Frize (and others have a hypoallergenic gene), beware of mixes though there is no way to tell if a mix puppy has the gene other then test that puppy.

Ok first off if you have a mixed breed dog I DO NOT mean to offend you.

Ok here at least (in the US I don’t know about elsewhere), people spend large sums of money to get a dog that is something mixed with a poodle, these dogs known as “designer dogs” have a whole host of virtues assigned to them (all of which can be gotten in a poodle) the main virtue is being hypoallergenic which comes form having poodle hair, now every designer dog I have seen says they are hypoallergenic, but the guy who came up with the idea for these dogs says they are not ALL hypoallergenic and for such a claim the dog must be tested and going further then that he stated that his breeding kennel has had litters where only 4 out of 12 pup have been hypoallergenic.

Grant,
I really want a Siberian Husky but I don't have the time you need to give to one (or two.....or three) of those awsome creatures.

Did quite a bit of reading on them beforehand and had to accept  that I could not be a responsible owner just yet, since me and my wife work.

Was thinking of joining the Siberian Husky Club Of Great Britain as a non owner member to get in on some 'Husky' days out etc.

I had a Dalmation named Chip that had eyes like that Husky. He was always giving the kids down the block the evil eye.

Dave,

We used to have a domestic Dutch Lop as a pet. It used to hump the cats.  :ahhh

Had a nasty habit of chewing appliance cords.

That rabbit has no fear, and also humps cats.

It also eats stereos and everything in the garden below about two feet high.

It is kind of cute though, the little b*stard.

That's not my dog, just a corgi I found online.  I gravitate towards bigger dogs these days since I do security work, and have a Siberian Husky and a German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix.  Here's a pic of my two last winter:

Huskies are great dogs- I love my old guy.  He's 11 and a half now, and still kicks the arses of dogs a fraction of his age at the dog park.  There's a three year old Retriever he likes to play with and that dog (same size, 1/4 age!) has yet to get the upper hand on Chinook!

That having been said, a Husky is not a normal type dog- don't expect a well behaved, easily trainable, lie at Master's feet kind of animal.  Even so called domesticated Huskies are independent minded, powerful dogs that are bred to work.  Work for them means running, and they will run at every opportunity, and spend the time between opportunities plotting on how to create an opportunity.  They will plow through you to get out an open door and take off.  The other major difficulty is that they are very instinctual when it comes to smaller animals.  Small dogs are fine, but hamsters, hedgehogs, birds, cats, fish, rats, mice, rabbits.... all are fair game, and a Husky will take great delight in hunting and killing them right in front of you, then playing with the corpse until they feel it's been tenderized well enough to eat.  My wife didn't believe me when I told her that's what they did, until it happened right in front of her.

Huskies are fantastic dogs, but they aren't right for most people.  They are hard to train simply because they don't usually give a rat's butt what you want them to do.  If there's food involved, they will listen, but only grudgingly, and you can tell they are only paying lip service to get what they want, and once they have the treat, well, piss on you!

If you know what you are in for (and joining a Husky club will teach you that!) then they are fantastic dogs.  If you want a wolf like animal that looks good and acts like Lassie, White Fang or any of the dogs in Snow Dogs, then forget it- start looking at Alsatians.  If however you like semi wild animals that are a source of almost constant amusement (just wait till the woo-ing and howling starts!) that's good with kids and leaves giant tumbleweed like clumps of fur around the house then a Husky just might be right for you!  :D

Husky Woo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM57ejNQmEc

They do that whenever they don't want to be ignored- when there's food about, when they want to go out, when you are watching TV.... or when you talk to them, they respond.

I hate to make them sound like such a horrible breed, but more Huskies are put down in shelters every year than any other pure breed, simply because they are a very hard dog to handle, and are betrayed by how bloody beautiful they are.  Husky puppies are about the cutest thing on the planet:

People can't resist these little balls of fluff, not knowing that Huskies are diggers, so you have to watch the carpets and furniture (I had a mattress that suddenly developed a large hole in the middle) and the trauma dealt to their kids when the new puppy devours Jr's hamster on Jr's bed.

Thanks for the advice, pics and video.   :tu:

In one of the books I read there was a list of ‘for and against’ in owning a Sibe, and most of what you say seems/is typical - but I can live with that.  As a cat lover I like the semi-wild character. I’m not so keen on the lapdog thing.

Owning a Siberian will be one big commitment we’re just not ready for yet:  at first I naively thought our garden at the back (though well big enough) was also safe enough to let one loose until I read about their digging skills and ingenuity for climbing, so I’d have a lot of work cut out for me just in the garden alone.  Then there’s the whole attention (I'd need at least two) and exercise thing that a working dog needs.

I would be selfish just to get one because I like em’ or that they look nice – as some idiots do  – so I can only do my homework admire them for now.
As yours is now reached 11 ½   it’s a good testimony you are a first-class owner.

I’ve heard about them running off and keep running and running and running……….. Only eventually to be run down or shot by a farmer.

It's a pleasure to talk to a Sibe owner  :salute:

Beagles are a hard breed to keep too. You can never ever let them off the leash or you will never see them again. They put their nose to the ground and off they go. The howl at the wind, the neighbors kid, the cat, at the tv, and the dishwasher. You gotta put them in their crates if you leave the house....even for a minute..or they will destroy your home. The older beagle figured out how to open cabinets. They have this thing that if something runs from them they must give chase. They hide their toys and treats in every nook and cranny in the house. I had rawhide under my pillow last night.

They are supersmart all of a sudden when it comes to food. I can hold a milkbone in my hand and they will sit, lay, rollover on command to get it. I play a game with them called "Hide the Cheese". I'll hide a piece of american cheese while they are outside and sure enough they can sniff it out anywhere.

US Customs uses beagles to locate fruits, veggies and drugs at the airport.

Imagine, someone actually bred those traits into beagles!  Those traits are what someone felt would be great to have in a dog!  :D

Paul- if you are used to cats then a Husky might be good for you as their attitude is very similar to a cat's.  If you have cats when it's time for you to get a Siberian though, get a puppy, as young as you can find so he grows up with the cat, and then probably won't eat it.  Careful though, as the Husky will probably still eat the neighbor's cats even though he has one of his own!

In the field while hunting rabbits and the sort, that yelling they do is great. In the house while trying to watch the game, not so much. Beagles are very smart dogs and are great hunting dogs.

This little gaffer needed a home.  Found in a box with 6 others abandoned in the neighboring town
we just picked him up last nite.  I just took him to the vet for shots, de worming, mites, etc.  Although
there were issues they were all minor and treatable and he's a lively and active little kitten.

Here's Xena, the Warrior Princess. And she fully earned her name. She's a mean little psycho. The following picture is Waylon. It's an older picture so Waylon is a bit fatter now. They're brother and sister. We found them when they were 4-5 days old and hand raised them.

Here is Jake and Bear. Jake is the hound and Bear is the pomeranian. Jake is my dog but Bear belongs to my mother in law who lives with us. yay  :D

And here's Dale. He's a lab/shar-pei mix. This is an older picture so he's probably 10-15 lbs heavier now.

Yeah, he can be an intimidating dog. His tongue is black so when he's barking his big white teeth are very visible. He's also got the build of a shar-pei, very stocky and muscular. But mostly he's a big softie.  :D

Dogs are the best people.  Here's a pic of Daisy I took last night.

It's a funny story- I was "taking care of business" and she has a habit of lying at my feet when I do.  I actually find it kind of annoying, but she does it anyway.  Our new bathroom isn't as spacious as the old one (we just moved from one unit in our building to another) and there's no room for her to lie at my feet since the tub is there.  So, she climbed into the tub and sat there until my "meeting" was finished!

I love dog logic!

Hiked out to a local (kinda, 50km away) set of waterfalls with a Boxer yesterday. He loved the hike, but hated sitting in the pool above the small set. Since we were there all day, he did not like us by the end of it. But still it was really funny watching him try and walk on top of the water, and freak out when we all jumped off the falls together. :D

You have great pets! I love dogs and cats and all those pets, but I can't have one myself. We travel too much, and my better half doesn't like dogs, and he doesn't want me to have anything that leaves hair or anythig in our appartement  :pok:

So all I have are little aquariums with artemia. I can leave them alone for a week or two without worrying, and they are beautiful to watch. But you can't play with them, they don't listen and you can't go out with them... not really a pet

This is a picture thread, so here are a few pictures of my artemia:

My old cat Spike died a few days ago. He lived with my ex and was about 17, blind and basically had nothing left in the tank. He was a huge personality and will really be missed over there :(

So, on the more cheery side of pets and their drama, I'm home alone at the moment with Muji (Princess Stripy of all the Tigers) and Ruby (Pickle Pants) and I just caught them doing something most unusual - sleeping on the same sofa together - had to get proof!

Those of you who met Ruby on the last meetup will know that she's a fair bit larger than the average cat - 25kgish. Photographic perspective allowing, this will also demonstrate that Muji is a rather big boy! When stretched out sleeping he's a metre long from front to back feet. He's in charge of their relationship and generally Ruby just skirts around him a bit, managing to get the odd quick sniff in now and again. Muji tolerates her but doesn't understand why she keeps throwing toys at him. They are really very funny together and entertain the hell outta me. So this having a kip together is a rare event and has cheered me up tonight :)

PS: The paracord collar I made Muji has been on him well over a year now and is holding up great. He managed to kill shop bought ones about once a month - not strong enough for my little tiger  ::)
