Title: Wenger limited edition "The Life" series
Post by: Eebs123 on April 02, 2019, 10:55:32 AM

Greetings from the new guy.
I was lucky to buy this at auction recently.

I tried to sell in South Africa (I am from Cape Town) but was disappointed with the offers.
What would this realistically be worth in Dollars?  Just to get an idea.  I cannot find any recent sales online.
The set is in mint condition, it is still in the cardboard box, and comes with nice wood display case.
Thanks all

First of all, welcome to the forum, enjoy your stay!

Secondly, this will be a pretty hard question to answer, I'm not even attempting to do so, but these things really don't have a going rate, so the offers, prices may vary greatly. Hopefully someone might have a better idea, it will be interesting to see.

Do you still want to sell or just looking for a rough, ballpark number for the value?

Oh, and  it's a nice set, definitely!

Thanks bud

If I get a decent price I will sell.   But if not I will just keep it since I am a collector / gatherer / hoarder too, and it will be the jewel in my Swiss knives crown.  (I have about 70 SAK's and some other brands of knives)

What further complicates a sale is that I am pretty limited to South African buyers. There are a lot of collectors here, but they mostly go for other brands like Spyderco, Microtech, Chris Reeve, or handmade knives.  SAK's have limited following here.  I have asked for equivalent of $750 which I believe is a fair price, but there were no takers.   Maybe I am too optimistic?

I suppose selling abroad will be difficult since it has to be couriered through customs etc.  I am not familiar with the process.

Regards

I got the set offered for $500 recently by a trader. So, I assume that is what it is roughly going for.

I absolutely love this series. I only have one of them - "Birth". (Actually I bought two of the same, one for my wife.)
I paid a bit more than 50 euros for each of them, about 10 years ago, and I thought that was expensive at the time (though now of course that would be an absolute bargain. They're easily worth a lot more than that, per knife.)
I think 750 dollars is a bit too much. Certainly for me, but then I don't like box sets that are intended never to be used. (Of course there are proper collectors out there with the opposite approach.)
I'm sure there is someone out there who is prepared to pay a good amount for the whole set, it's just a question of being patient and not letting them go too cheap.
Greetings to lovely South Africa, ek sê!

Ha ha!  Are you an expat, or Saffer?  Greetings there too, my broer

Yes I have seen them them online from $800 to $1000, so I am sure somebody will pay thereabouts for a set in mint condition.  Until then I will just admire them..

I would also think about selling the knives individually. I have sold a few semi-rare Wengers on ebay Germany and I imagine you could easily get (at the very least) 100 euros per knife. Or you could try flogging the entire box there. I guess the problem is shipping out of SA and the costs of doing that safely and reliably. Some old geezer in Pretoria I bought a book from told me the postal system is a bit of a mess (to put it mildly)
(Of course you don't have to live in Germany to sell on ebay Germany)

No I'm not South African but I visited a long time ago! I knew this Afrikaner who ended every sentence with "... ek sê!"
"We should go get lunch, ek sê!"
"Where's my 50 rand, ek sê!"
etc..!

Yes it would be less of a hassle for me just to put the parcel straight in the garbage, than to put it in postal system.  Courier is the only way to go.

Cheers ek sê!
