Stacked all the new firewood first thing this morning...

...then later on chopped quite an impressive amount of kindling with my big choppy hawk...

Do I get a badge for that? Go on, you know you want to?

Fuzzy,
Whatever you do, don't checkout this website:

Sorry, that image turns out to be a link to this website: Gränfors Bruk (https://www.gransforsbruk.com/en/product-cat/forrest-axes/)
Don't go to that website! It has lots of hand forged axes of supreme beauty and function. So you don't want to be tempted by that sort of thing.

Yeah, but Granfors axes don't do much for me I'm afraid (ducks). That Prandi one however really spoke to me... as poncey people often say these days...

I was kinda saying try a second hand Axe :pok:
It's not too bad speedy ;)
Thanks Nix :salute:
-
I was kinda saying try a second hand Axe :pok:
:iagree:
I agree, Sparky. I like a tomahawk, but I find a proper hand axe to be a bit more useful. The tomahawk's blade tends to be overly thin, which limits it in some ways.
Sparky is right, Fuzzy. You really owe it to yourself to try a nice hand axe or hatchet. Do be careful though--accidents are more likely with a small axe than a large one.

I've got quite a few axes and hatchets already, I just fancied a new mediumishey sized one.... Anyway, I'm trying to convince myself NOT to buy a new one! You lot are not helping.... please keep posting links and videos...
-
Ahhhh... Sorry, Fuzzy.
So, to be clear, you are NOT looking for a medium-sized forrest axe like this Snow & Nealley:

No, absolutely not... like that axe you've just shown and that I've just googled...

So....I probably shouldn't post a pic of mine then.....right?

Yeah, OK, no worries. I won't post this photo of my Snow & Nealley in the snow, next to a SAK as thick as a burger:
But, I will say this S&N is a really delight to handle. A bit smaller than a GB Forrest Axe, but the balance is impeccable. If one chokes up, it can handle like a hatchet. Yet it works really well with a two handed grip. (Just be sure you have a good stop and won't swing it through something and into your leg.) This thing is a perfect kindling maker.
-
That is a most excellent looking axe! :like: How long's the shaft, 24"?
Talking of kindling... actually, hold on, I don't know if I should post any of my grotty pics now...?
-
Don’t be shy Fuzzy
-
... I was using the hawk again today to cut some more kindling - I trying to stockpile a decent amount so that the old farts don't need to do anything when I'm away down south.
Anyway, I was all set to concede to Nix that tomahawks are not quite up there with a decent hatchet in terms of usefulness/usability, but actually this one's pretty darn good actually and I'd say on a par with my Bahco axes... and really good fun to use.
As well as cutting some more hardwood kindling, I also quickly chopped quite a lot of sticks from the stick pile - two tomato crates worth, which is alright.

Top of head to bottom of handle is 23" (58 cm).
Feels just perfect.
But, then, I say the same thing about my GB Forrest Axe which has a longer handle (25"? 63 cm?).....

Cheers! They're both hackneys really - the one on the left is retired and you're right, the one on the right is brutal.
-
Just a quick guess, the one on the left Wetterlings the one on the right Brades?
Oh and thanks for the picture :salute:
-
I've no idea I'm afraid, I inherited both of them. I don't thing there's any indicating marks etc on them. I'll have a look tomorrow... I bet you're right though. :tu:

I won't take that bet :D

They're such good value for money. :tu: The other one's beautiful - I stripped it right down to its steel and wood... that one lives down south, this one lives up here in the stick shed hence the the state of it.

I'm not sure where I got mine. I've had it for 10 years or so.
Pretty sure I found it on-line.

Hit eBay - range $50 and up. Shipping is a killer! Will try local stores around here or wait untill I get back to Georgia.
