Title: What are the best tweezers for splinter removal?
Post by: Cogito on March 14, 2014, 12:42:01 AM
Once I got a hand full of splinters and my Sak classic tweezers couldn't remove most of them.

I want to start carrying tweezers that are really good at removing splinters and can be used for other tweezer related stuff, does anyone have any recommendations?

The reviews on amazon look really bad though :(  Do you think it might be a quality control issue?

I have never had any problem removing a splinter with the small sak tweezers or any of the sak tweezers. :D

I have never had any problem removing a splinter with the small sak tweezers or any of the sak tweezers. :D

I had a lot of small thorns and splinters in the palms of my hands and the sak tweezers couldn't handle it, because the tips weren't sharp or precise enough.

So what ended up happening is they were in my hand permanently I thought, but then 2 months later in a really hot shower I got these small blisters on my hands and underneath them were the splinters and I was able to remove it with just my fingers, but I would rather not do that again as my hands were hurting for a long time and you never know about infections and what not.

How many splinters on average would you say that you've removed so far?

Probably not as many as you by the sounds of it but somewhere around 15-20 over the years. On real small splinters or the ones hard to get to, I just used the point end instead of the flats.  Worked for me! :)

I got mine from county comm. the ones from amazon appear to be identical. But maybe the county comm ones are different.

I've pulled several splinters that the Vic's couldn't. And they are unnoticeable on my keychain.
I've carried them for several years and lost one set where they came out if the holder. But other then that they have been great.
I ordered them from county comm a couple if months ago and they were the same as my old ones from them.

The Uncle Bill's Sliver Grippers are awesome. I have two pairs and they have never disappointed. They make Black Oxide ones as well.

Likewise, one on the keychain, and also a Wenger one in the toothpick holder since the alox ones don't have one.. JR

I use the pliers on whatever MT I happen to be carrying. :D

The Style PS and Squirt PS4 are excellent for splinter removal! Skeletool pliers work well too, but they're not spring loaded.

I have several pairs of the sliver grippers and like them.  Sometimes, though, the best tool for a deep and or very small splinter is not tweezers, but either a needle or pin, or a really sharp pocket knife blade.

That pocket tweez is really pricey at $28.  I almost want to order one just to see if it's worth it, but unfortunately they are out.

I know neither of these suggestions are as effective as dedicated tweezers, but I'm super chintzy with my pocket space, so it's SAK tweezers for me!

One pair of VICTORINOX tweezers reshaped (through the magic of bending) for better mechanical advantage, and one pair filed to a pointy tip.

I've had good luck with with both of these setups, even when I was removing multiple slivers a day. But, of course Your Mileage May Vary.

The A G Russell knife catalog shows tweezers that look good for only $7 or so.  They are in a holder designed to fit on a key chain - these will be my next MacGyver carry gadget :tool: :D

Modding the tips seems like a really clever idea, I like it :)

It sure beats what the other guys at work were doing -- digging everything out with exacto knives.

Use the SAK pliers.

Man tweezers.

Man tweezers.

The SAK pliers work well for very fine work. I love how precise they are. Probably not great if you have to dig in to get a sliver out, but if your a man just grip it and rip it.  :D

I just ordered two of these Tweezerman Key Essentials Outdoor Rescue Kits last night.

http://www.tweezerman.com/store/product/key-essentials-outdoor-rescue-kit/

One will go in my EDC messenger bag and I'll probably give the other set to my wife for her purse.  Cheapest place I found to order them from was Walgreen's.

My order from Walgreens arrived today. These look great in person and I'm confident I made the right choice.  The long slender ones look perfect for splinter removal.

The cases seem great and the snaps are also magnetic.

Uncle Bill's Sliver Grippers are the best IMO. I got a Black Oxide pair on my Keys. Not so black oxide anymore after wearing against keys tho...

So far I can say the SAK tweezers are far better than the Gerber ones (from the Dime).

Wow. They use the exact same font as Leatherman, makes the logo look very similar. Coincidence?

For splinter removal IMHO the best tool is needle... Using it as small pry bar...

For bigger ones I use LM P4... You'd be surprised how well they do!!  :D :D

No they are not the same company. I think they are good from a copyright lawsuit as I don't think letter font is copywriteable (not a word), but I could be mistaken.

Yeah probably safe but, I heard that Cadbury (a chocolate company in Australia, dunno if it's available in the US) tried to sue somebody for using the same shade of purple as they do, I think it was thrown out of court but hey. And the Coca Cola font is copyrighted for sure...

My children constantly get splinters and when they do I use the tweezers on any of my 91mm knives to remove them. I have never had a problem with the SAK tweezers.

Fonts are work products, and can be protected, but it's not copyright. I've made a few fonts, and the thing is, most people, even graphic artists, never have a need to make a font, so virtually EVERYONE uses premade fonts. I have a fair knack of determining the age of a movie by the font used for a movie title, since certain type elements come into vogue, then get overused and disappear.

I guess the whole point I'm trying to get at is that it's almost certain that the font Leatherman uses is not custom made. Maybe more important, it's such a simple block font that there are probably 3 or 4 fonts out there that would be nearly indistinguishable.

I've spent many years in the back country. I currently build fences for a living. I've never encountered a splinter I couldn't remove with my teeth or the trusty LM Skele knife/pliers. And my best defense against splinters...callouses .
