I stumbled into Rock and Metal over similar bands you did.
I think my "awakiening" was Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction in `87, I tracked their roots back and found some Nice bands on the way.
I do enjoy a wide spectrum from Aerosmith to ZZ Top, including Motörhead, Miedival inspired bands like In extremo, Glam Rock like Motley Crue, Punk inspired ones like the Ramones, others like The Backyard Babies, Hellacopters, sometimes a little less loud like the Quireboys, even some Kid Rock now and then, and classics like AC / DC, Metallica, Judas Priest...
Not into Heavy Metal per se... more into the melodic bit: Symphonic Metal, Power Metal, Doom Metal, Gothic Metal, Industrial Metal etc.
Such as Rammstein, Nightwish, Lacrimosa, Blutengel, Epica, Xandria, Lacuna Coil, Nekrogoblikon...

I love Rammstein - the whole family does (but melodic?) and I've been listening to tons of Nightwish. So glad Floor is singing for them now - great voice. I will check out Nekrogoblin just for the name.
Zed, I am a huge ABBA fan too and love Sweet Caroline - you're correct the man has chops.
When I was playing in bands it was a recurring idea to play Abba songs in a Black Sabbath style and call ourselves Black Sabba. I think we'd have been hit with lawsuits before the first doom laden chords of 'Take a Chance on Me' faded
I used to be into heavy metal but almost exclusively listen symphonic metal now. I've seen Lacuna Coil, Delain, Within Temptation and will be seeing Nightwish in concert in December :)
While I consider myself a metal fan, most of what I listen to is in the Death, Melodic Death, Thrash and the more modern metal ranges. Very little classic metal gets played in this house. If you want to hear what the wife and I enjoy you can check out her radio show on demand: https://www.mixcloud.com/sexto9/
It's quite a wide range, but like I said we don't tend to play too much of the classics (plenty of other shows cover that already...)
Whoey - I love Opeth - hands down (apart from Tool) my fave band at the moment. Who would you recommend I listen to in the same vein?mellow side of Opeth or the old school harsh stuff (I like both!)
I will check out her show when I get my new works laptop tomorrow as I can't access it on my desktop pc.

I really dig Riverside, they have some groovy stuff a bit like Opeth, for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5whn4_-0j0s
Have you ever listened to Katatonia (the lead Jonas is good friends with Mikael of Opeth) and they are similar mellow side:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPSGS-ymseI
There's also Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity, and several other bands) side project Nightingale:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6PhV4JyVw4
Also maybe check out some Stephen Wilson stuff, Porcupine Tree etc. He worked with Opeth producing several of their albums:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y77CN0Xrubo
That's probably more than enough to get you started. I'm finding Opeth a bit samey these days, I liked them a lot better when they mixed more harsh and mellow... Still great, and we've seen them live countless times, interviewed them loads of times.
We were still in the UK when they filmed the Lamentations DVD at Shepard's Bush Empire, in fact it was the last concert in London before we left, we are somewhere in the upper gallery...
They are quite mellow humble guys. It's always been a pleasure to speak with them both on and off mic. One time we showed up at the label office to do an interview with them, and they said "What Maria again?" when they told them the interview was with Totalrock... back then we were one of the few who cared about them... and look at them now!
I've always thought they were amazing musicians, and they tend to be more of a musician appreciated band, the people who appreciated the concerts back then were mostly musicians themselves!
Most of those examples are quite mellow/accessible to all. Some of the bands have a similar range to Opeth, depending on which album/era you listen to. That's something I love about some bands, they play both harsh and mellow sides, just showing how open minded they are when it comes to music!
I figured I'd suggest some songs:Cheers Corwyn :salute: I will work my way through these on my home computer - for some reason they won't let us watch Youtube at work! ???

I don't tend to listen to as much metal as I used to but here is what I tend to gravitate towards:
Metallica, Dream Theater (some), Liquid Tension Experiment, Tool, Avenged Sevenfold, Russian Circles (great metal trio). There is a newer band I discovered called Ruby the Hatchet. They have the Sabbath sound going with a female singer:

One of several for us. Lacuna Coil, In Flames were also bands we championed back 12-13 years ago, and both of those have also grown to a massive fan base... In fact, back then my wife had a reputation of being "the girl who plays In Flames" on the radio... and just to annoy Mike here's the photo of my wife and Cristina from Lacuna Coil a bunch of years back (I've posted it on here before, but it never gets old :P)We were still in the UK when they filmed the Lamentations DVD at Shepard's Bush Empire, in fact it was the last concert in London before we left, we are somewhere in the upper gallery...

This is great! Thanks for telling me. I've asked for the Lamentations DVD for my birthday next month, and the CD's that I don't have already - Damnation, My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life and the Albert Hall DVD.
I haven't felt like this about a band since first hearing Tool many years ago. Another good thing about Opeth is that they are a lot more prolific than Tool!
I bet it's great to have a hand in the success of a band you really like.

Wembley arena on the 19th of December :)I used to be into heavy metal but almost exclusively listen symphonic metal now. I've seen Lacuna Coil, Delain, Within Temptation and will be seeing Nightwish in concert in December :)
Mike, where are you seeing Nightwish? I may try and get tickets to take my daughter.
It's amazing how many niches Metal occupies - from the last few posts we have Classic, Hair, Symphonic, Death, Thrash, there's Industrial, Doom, Grindcore, Math etc etc etc.
One of the reasons I love it is that it's so inclusive and I'm especially heartened nowadays to see as many females as males attending gigs. When I was young it was totally male dominated but when I took my daughter to see Opeth last October there was a massive cross section of people there.
Can you really hear 'Sweet Caroline' too many times? I think not!

Musically I love Dream Theatre but I wish they'd get a new singer - He's not bad at all, but his voice seems at odds with the music.
Tool are my most favourite band - they seem to be on a different plane to everyone else - can't describe it.
I will check out Russian Circles and Ruby the Hatchet - There are quite a few bands with the Sabbath sound (The Sword, Orange Goblin etc) but none quite capture the sheer primevel awe of a Tony Iommi riff - blindingly simple and obvious but but but....... 'Into the Void' once it kicks in, is Tony at his best I think - so simple but only Tony thought of it.

HUGE Metal Fan for the last 25 years at least.. Primarily Classic metal like Anthrax, Megadeth, Death, Sepultura, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Kreator, Tankard ect.. If the frontman is about 50 years old (or dead), there's a good chance I'm listning to it..
Two years ago I got the chance to finally see my biggest idol through the years King Diamond Live at the Copenhell Festival and just after getting my two girls that was one of the most fantastic experiences so far..!! Throwing horns, knowing all the lyrics and constantly having goose bumps for two hours.. :D :D

Cool! Which Saxon and which Hendrix?
I'm going to find some time this weekend to investigate some of the music that's been mentioned here that I haven't heard. Can't wait.
Metal makes us strong
Together we belong
ManowaR - Army of the Immortals - Metal makes us strong (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x65uvv)
Saxon:Strong Arm of the Law

James Marshall: All along the watchtower(though I actually kinda prefer Dylan's original)

Still one of the best covers ever though :salute:
Ok Metallers, we've all introduced ourselves. We all have metal running through our veins. We are, as Manowar would say, a Brotherhood of Metal.
My question to you all is:
What riff do you have playing in your head when you're doing something cool?
If I'm doing something cool and fast (running away from/chasing Ninjas etc) I have (currently) 'Kickstart my Heart' by Motley Crue
If I'm doing something slower (stalking Ninja's/making an omelette/shaving) I have 'Into the Void' by the mighty Sabs
The first CD I ever owned was Master of Puppets. I've seen Metallica twice. :tu:
I have a couple Metallica albums on vinyl...
At least 10 of the shelves in this are metal, one shelf is non metal:
And that isn't everything :ahhh
Inspired by this thread I added ~ 120 new songs, mostly Dio, Megadeth, Anthrax, Halloween, Venom, Twisted Sister etc.
Actually that's my poor design/implementation. The whole thing is made up of prefinished/laminated boards... none of them are the same spacing just roughly the height of a cd case vertical (they're longer than tall) to allow for some of the special box editions that are weird heights. Also when I built it I didn't have hardly any tools available... and it was a bit of a rush job so I roughly measured it out instead of making a jig that would have had it perfect. Also the shelves that aren't sagging is because those are the ones with L brackets attached to the wall... in retrospect I wish I had used shorted length, or cut some spacers to build a central column to give it more structural integrity...I have a couple Metallica albums on vinyl...

Cool band! I'm old enough to admit I bought everything up to Master of Puppets on vinyl AS THEY CAME OUT. I saw them at Donington I think.
What's your fave Metallica song JD?
Dio, Malmsteen and a classic

Yes. I always liked the way Black Sabbath and Deep Purple where interconnected and Dio was the bridge between them. Gillan has a very "Blues" voice and didn't suit their sound but Dio was equally great in Rainbow (Deep Purple's natural successor) and Black Sabbath and even better in his own scheme, were he played the highest quality Heavy Metal after studying in those two great schools. Many people cite Led Zeppelin as the greatest but they didn't give life to other groups and they didn't evolve further (some brief Coverdale and Page and Page and Plant collaborations are exceptions), Yardbirds were much more inspiring (one could claim that LZ were "unique" of course) but consider the groups that started from these two, Ozzy Osbourne, Heaven and Hell, Rainbow, Ian Gillan Band, Whitesnake, PAL (OK, and Blackmore's Night) the continued Black Sabbath and Deep Purple after 1986, the new wave of HM groups that stepped on their sounds and themes like Iron Maiden, the connections with other groups like Rob Halford and Judas Priest, the immitators, the musicians that were shared, such as Cozy Powel, Don Airy, Glenn Hughes, Bob Daisley, the collaborations of Butterfly Ball and the second Concerto for Group and Orchestra etc. Their influence goes down to any modern HM group and to any boy that scratches his quitar, from Randy Rhoades to Curt Cobain and from Joe Satriani to Yngwie Malmsteen.
OK, Led Zeppelin inspired Heart and Dread Zeppelin and some AC-DC. They are great too at their time but they had almost nothing to do with Dio.
:think:Hey firiki I agree about Queen. Very heavy first couple of albums. I think the labelling you dislike just serves as a shortcut - I call it all metal as an umbrella term for my own benefit but it is useful to be able to differentiate between bands like say Whitesnake and Venom, or Slipknot. All very different sounding bands.
Just wondering if you head-banger people (hey, I do it, too) :D are going to start :pommel: if I say that there are some very heavy metal tunes in early Queen sound.
Like in Ogre Battle, Sheer Heart Attack, The Seven Seas of Rhye, Mustapha, Stonei Cold Crazy, maybe The Prophet's Song and possibly other tracks eluding me right now?
And please allow a mini-rant (can't burn a heretic if they're not a believer, can you now?) :D, the two things I don't like about metal are, first that I can't understand all the labelling, Thrash, Death, Core, Glitter :P and I_don't_know_what Metal and then, how defined of a sound metal music (as my ears perceive it) is, it seems, against variation.
Then again I didn't know Tool and Led Zep are classed as metal.
I know zep didn't want to be associated with the hm tag but that's their loss. :D
Hey magentus, may I join? :pok: While I was a kid in the 80's, my interest in music really kicked in during the 90's. I honestly don't remember what bands I really got into early on, but I know I ended up backtracking to the 80's with Metallica and Guns n Roses in particular. I had a friend I met in 8th grade who was a metal fan and he helped shape my tastes in music, with one major band he was the biggest fan of-Pantera. We went and saw them, along with many other bands like Fear Factory (another one that stuck out to me) at Ozzfest '97. I'll have to look up who else played there (obviously Ozzy and Black Sabbath). That was my first concert and overwhelming for a young me at the time ;)
I also got into Korn bigtime, as well as some Limp Bizkit. Not sure if they're metal exactly. Like firiki, I'm not familiar with all the sub genres within the metal family. I also like Disturbed and a large variety from the 90's and millennium on, but with no access to any of it currently, I can't think of many other bands off the top of my head. I do also like Motley as well (mags mentioned "Kickstart my Heart" which I always enjoy when it comes on the radio). I wish I could think of more. I do enjoy Tool some as well.
I've slowed on the acquisition/discovery of much new metal in the last decade though. I hear stuff on the rock station that I like, but I'm not familiar with many of the bands. Although I do like Hailstorm I think it is. The female vocalist is really great and has a set of lungs from what I've heard. I really like their song "Love Bites". Very energetic and thrashy song. Bits and pieces keep coming to me ;) Anyway, I may think of more later.
i wonder where would Orange goblin fall genre vise
i wonder where would Orange goblin fall genre vise
I would say they were Stoner Metal along the lines of Ozzy era Sabbath, but it's all just metal to me!
Another fan of metal music here.
I started listening to metal when I was nine. It started with Iron Maiden and Metallica, then Pantera came, then heavier stuff came (death, black, etc.).
When I was 11, I discovered the old In Flames (Clayman was their last masterpiece IMO) and strongly fell in love with their sound. I was blown away by their combination of melodies, heaviness and awesome lyrics. The old IF sound was my musical favorite for many years. I accepted the fact that they have changed their sound a lot and I respect their decision - bands have every right to do whatever they want with their music. But their newer albums are not as interesting to me as their older albums, simple as that.
After the long period of preferring of Gothenburg melodeath sound (DT, Soilwork, AE, ATG, AMS, etc.), now I prefer the Finnish sound (mostly melodeath - Insomnium, Before the dawn, Amorphis, etc.). Currently Insomnium is my favorite band, followed by Amorphis and BTD.
What annoys me about music these days (including metal, too, definitely) is that there are a lot of boring copycats, repeating the same musical phrases and lyrics over and over... Plus, I'm not a fan of trivial and retarded teenage-angst lyrics. I prefer the music with lyrical and musical depth and passion, whatever the genre. As I grow older, more and more I want the music to have that certain vibe, something I can individually resonate to. One day I will turn up Tori Amos, the next day it will be Mastodon or Jakob, the next day Blotted Science... It doesn't have to have the yet-unseen 100000000 BPM tempo or 232-minute-super-duper-phrygian-dominant-scale solo for me to resonate... it's all about my current feeling and thoughts. For me, music should be all about the acoustic freedom, the remnants of a certain state of human mind, present somewhere in time and space.
I respect a band who takes a shot and tries out a new sound sometimes. I know this might be an unpopular view that I have but I applaud Metallica for taking a direction change that they did with Load/Reload/St. Anger. ...And Justice turned a little bit away from the thrash of Kill em, Lighting and Puppets and then they went for the more groove oriented stuff a la Pantera on the Black Album.I didn't mind this either. I actually enjoyed their change and have liked all their albums.
Are we eligible for a Heavy Metal Merit Badge?

It's the TROOPER!!!
What to say? Just listen to it.

That was it with Iron Maiden? Just 4 people. Alright, 4 but lions, the rest of you are free to listen to Avril Lavigne as much as you wish
What about some MOTORHEAD?!?!?!
https://youtu.be/hF9Gr5waAJg
Which one is your favourite Motorhead song? I'll tell you mine later, im fact it is my personal anthem.
You got it right. Did you know Lemmy taught Sid Vicious to play the bass (he was obviously a bad student, or too stoned to make much progress). No wonder they have Punk attitudes.Ha, I didn't know that! That seems like Bruce Dickinson teaching Baby Spice to sing!
Listen to this then

I do believe I belong in this club.
Mmm.... Steppenwolf, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Metallica, Uhh... others... many others.
Nowadays I'm more wandering into the styles spawned by Heavy Metal with stuff like Disturbed/Device, Within Temptation, Godsmack, Tyr, etc...
Needs more cowbell :drink:
Make some suggestions for us to listen to, I'm always ready for some more metal!

Any hopes I had of getting into BOC have been wrecked by Will Ferrell
What's your Judas Priest favourite? A great HM group. I particularly like Rob Halford's high pitch voice which was a trend in the '80s (together with Bruce Dickinson, Udo Dirkschneider, Brian Johnson etc), but they made great music and songs that are equally catching when sung by a complete different style singer. Hear my favourite, Breaking the Law, by Motorhead!

A VIP of blues and metal alike in Europe, almost unknown in the US, Gary Moore. What's your favorite Moore song? Mine is Out in the fields but I love the Shapes of things cover too.
RIP Gary Moore

Loved this. I checked out a couple others from them. 'King' had too much 'cookie Monster' crappy vocals. 'Call of the Mountains' was pretty excellent.
The mix of female vocalist lead with a secondary 'counterpoint', I guess, of male deathmetal vocals reminds me of Leaves Eyes, a band I'd LOVE if they'd rein in the cookie monster crappy vocals. This one by them has just a tad too much for me, but mostly tolerable.
*sighs* I could keep on all day...I know them...

I just wanted to give a general 'thanks' to everyone putting stuff in this thread. It's really hard for me to find new Heavy Metal I like, and even if folks post stuff that I DON'T like, it's still a chance at finding something new.
It's also awesome that the boards have a pretty big international showing, so I'm getting exposed to stuff I'd be even LESS likely to find.
Thanks all. :salute:
I'm going to take a left turn here and go with more slower stoner metal stuff:

I prefered Coverdale's macho and blues voice over Hughe's high pitch and soul in the '70s, but now that he aged he got much better.

And... Okay, there needs to be some SERIOUS warnings before this song.
There's a group called Steel Panther, a parody/homage 80's metal hair band. Their stuff is ... uhh... raunchy.
Seriously raunchy.
If you are 'easily offended', as in, have ANY taste whatsoever, I suggest you skip this one.Show contentI'm serious. The song is entitled 'Glory Hole', and it's a name-says-it-all kind of titleShow contentYou have been fair warned.

Metal is my favorite music. From AmonAmarth to Motörhead and from Marduk to CCR (no real metal, but related somehow)...
Every music that is handemade is great. Be it Blues or Metal or Country or Rock. Amazing stuff.
I´ve seen Motörhead about 12 times I suppose. Everytime when they were in Munich and on several festivals during the past. In my Wild Times.
THe most important tool at a festival can be an SAK.... :climber:
I just have one of my all-time-fave albums in the player at work... Motörhead smurfs ... what a hammeralbum.
The death of Lemmy was a bad punch, though. Hard to believe never to hear Mr. Rock'n'Roll Himself on a new album in future. :poh:

My absolute favourite bands are Tool and Opeth - Do you have any bands you'd recommend? I love expanding on my listening.
Thanks! I like Megaherz, and I'll definitely try some Amon Amarth and Eisregen. Used to be a big Venom fan and saw them a couple of times but lost interest.Metal is my favorite music. From AmonAmarth to Motörhead and from Marduk to CCR (no real metal, but related somehow)...

Well Rammstein can be included to the list. But they are not my beer, actually. It seems to be always the same - no real variation in their songs. The lyrics are a little strange, specially for german ears. Oomph is a good band. I like 'em.
Tool and Opeth are nice to listen to. A little bit experimental though.
Well, you could try Megaherz or Eisregen if you like german lyrics.
Another great band, noneheless is Amon Amarth. I´ve also seem them several times. Their early albums are just great. I recommend anyone listen to "Once Sent From The Golden Hall" or "The Avenger" . Great stuff!
For sure all those old guys are just plain awesome ... Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden (the old albums), Metallica (the first three albums), Kreator, Sodom, Venom ... the list goes on and on. If I would be 10 years younger ... sigh :dd: :twak:
Sometimes bands like Dropkick Murphys or Dead Kennedys are also great to listen to... not really metal, but well made punk rock.
I'm impressed with the Lindemann album. Very adult lyrics! I'm kind of glad that Rammsteins lyrics are in German because I don't have to think too much about the subject matter. :facepalm:Yeah, Till is a character. Honestly Rammstein would not have the following if they sang exclusively in English. The Germans stereotypically have unusual taste in their adult entertainment, much if which is extremly taboo in the English speaking world. Rammsteins lyrics certainly reflect the darker side of human desires and thoughts.
While tracks like 'Links' are very interesting to dissect lyrically, my favourite track 'Ich tu dir weh' (I hurt you, or, I do you woe') is uncomfortable listening knowing the translation, so I have given up looking at the english translations.
The video for 'Ich Tu' is interesting - Til has his mouth lit from inside which involved him having his cheek pierced and an optical cable threaded through the hole. Ugh.
Lol out loud! Us too! Rammstein is one of the few bands that my daughter, wife and I can agree on, but after learning some of the lyrics we have made a pact to go no further!I'm impressed with the Lindemann album. Rammstein (and Till's solo album) are not for everyone.
I still love them though. I actually learned what little German I know translating Rammstein Lyrics.
Rammstein's live shows are something else. I remember being so excited when their decade long ban from the US was lifted, I bought a ticket that day! I agree that its a shame so many bands are pressured to sing in English, especially when the songs dont translate well (Du Hast is an especially good example of losing meaning in the English version. No more ambiguity with the homophones "hast" and "hasst").Lol out loud! Us too! I saw them live on the Reise Reise tour and we were sat next to a cordoned off area. It was a 'safety zone' because of the amount of pyro the band threw out. Apart from Tool and Opeth both of which border on a religious experience for me, Rammstein is the best live band I've seen.
I like that they sing in German. It's a shame that there is a pressure to sing in English for non english speaking bands so more power to them.
We interviewed them so much back in London that one time they were at the label HQ doing press and when they told them next was an interview with Totalrock they said "what, Maria again?" :P It's like seeing old friends every time now... (which can be dangerous if Maria drops a question that they might not normally answer to press)They seem like pretty chill people - Mikael seems particularly down to Earth for someone with his abilities - He doesn't come across like a Ritchie Blackmore.

I love the melodic and melancholic sound of certain Finnish metal bands like Insomnium, Sentenced, Before the dawn / Wolfheart / Black sun aeon (hats off to mr. Tuomas Saukkonen), Amorphis (all their eras),...Plenty of names there that are regularly spun on the wife's radio show and in this house.
Also, I spontaneously narrowed down my taste in metal - not every band or song sounds good to me just because they're metal. For example, I just can't resonate with the "most modern" metal bands like The Unguided or Sonic Syndicate. It just sounds too shallow and modernly wanna-be-hardcore-and-spectacular to me. It's like their songs don't differ at all and try too hard to incorporate completely different atmospheres, even when it sounds clumsy. First they have the wanna-be-brutal-and-dark-death metal verses, with the vocals sounding like a kid trying too hard to sound like a death metal beast, only to be followed by a cheerful poppy chorus with completely clean vocals without any relation to the aforementioned verses. Don't get me wrong, I love blending different styles and emotions, as long as it is done with a taste and congruity, but 80% of this modern metal sounds just plain artificial and boring.
Even the old "players" can become dull and not interesting anymore - for example, I have a lot of respect for Peter Tägtgren, but his last 3 PAIN albums sounds exactly the same - a bit too boring- you hear those songs twice and you've had enough.
Fortunately, metal never stops evolving. Bands come and go, there is a constant flow of new and interesting bands that are waiting to be discovered.
I really enjoy Oblivion from Crack the Skye actually, which i suppose is my favorite album as well. pop some Mastodon up then dude! :pok: What's your favourite song? Album? Insomnium - Winter's gate
They went for a change. Concept album (similar to Edge of Sanity's Crimson, for example), single 40 minutes long song. They kept some part of their typical Finnish melancholic melodeath sound, yet they added some almost-melodic-black sound and something else, I am not sure how to describe it, it may be even called a bit more progressive. The album is full of firm blastbeats - their most fierce drumwork ever. Niilo's growls never sounded so brutal. The heavy parts are divided by the proggy, dreamy acoustic passages. The atmosphere is quite cold, wintery. Their albums always had dreamy or melancholic sound (Since the day it all came down was their most wintery album up to date IMO), but this sounds even colder than most of the Norwegian '90s black metal.
Here is the beginning of the story behind the album (the sequels are on the "related videos" list):

A lot of new releases have fallen a bit short for me lately and the album that has my attention mostly at the moment is Oracles "Miserycorde", here's a track:
I agree, EoS were indeed innovators (lots of respect for Dan Swano) and Crimson is a very interesting album. Few weeks ago I was listening to their "Purgatory Afterglow". Those riffs, that sharp old school Swedish DM guitar sound! That was a proper (melodic/progressive) death metal sound.this is in my car tunes mix:

I'm not sure if you knew this, but my wife's radio show was sandwiched between Krusher (Noisy Mothers/Kerrang) and Tommy Vance back in the golden era at Totalrock Radio. She considers Tommy to be her mentor when it comes to being on radio. In the beginning he was helping her do some demo tapes for adverts (she was doing them in Spanish) and he uttered: "I don't know what you're selling but I'm buying it." She later got him to record it in studio and uses it during her show as a sound bite. And some primodial metal, straight from the '68.Love it - That riff is so HEAVY! I didn't know - thanks for telling me. He was a great DJ - I met him once at a charity do with Ian Gillan so I was beside myself! The Friday Rock Show was something I looked forward to all week, and diligently taped all the good stuff. Brilliant show and, like you said, he is sadly missed. Paice, Gillan, Glover, the wife of Lord, Coverdale and Hughes.Hmmmm. The Purp's without Ritchie. Nope. They're not in the Hall of Fame for their later stuff - He should have been honoured too. Although he's probably sat in his castle strumming on his mandolin and quietly laughing about it.
Blackmore didn't go, perhaps because Gillan insisted that only current members (the first three with Airey and Morse) would play. Coverdale and Hughes didn't play with Deep Purple but with Cheap Trick.
Blackmore was always proud, peculiar and a bit autistic, as most really great artists. As his wife said, you can't get more black than Blackmore!

The whole group made a great impact. Just think of their affiliations. The Maze, Episode Six, Rainbow, Blackmore's Night, Paice Ashton Lord, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Ian Gillan Band, Gillan & Glover, Hughes Turner Project, Dio, Butterfly Ball, Living Loud, Rock Aid Armenia, WhoCares, Trapeze, Hughes/Thrall, Black Country Communion, Gillan, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zeppelin, Coverdale/Page, Nazareth.

Just found about the Swedish band Ghost. Interesting tunes they have.+1 - Do you think they are some sort of disguised supergroup? They seemed to arrive fully formed, and with their costumes they can swap members at will. I'm really enjoying them at the moment too. Great tunes, great presence and Papa Emeritus III is a hoot. Oh, and love those Gibsons!

I was still in a delirium of bliss?
Just a fantastic gig. None of them seem to have lost anything in terms of performance and the energy they put into it would put a lot of younger bands to shame. My only slight complaint was the excessively long drum solo, though I suspect they needed the time to let Ozzy take on some oxygen. ;)
I became a hard rock and heavy metal fan during the '80s, in my teens. I heard most of the relative material from the Rock n' Roll era up to the start of the '90s, but medical school, marriage and kids prevented me from knowledge of the later years, say 1990 up to today. 1990-2010 I was fixed on classical music, with occassional sessions of older rock material. Rock was out of fashion, just Metallica and grunge here and there, and all my music money went for classical CDs. I had the opportunity to see Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult at least. But I don't know most of the newer metal groups and songs.
So, I am asking, are there newer songs that have a legendary/cult/artistic status similar to that of the classics like Smoke on the Water, Ace of Spades, Black Dog, Godzilla, The Number of the Beast, Breaking the Law, Back to Black, Rock you like a Hurricane and so on? Could you provide a list or links to make contact with the more recent evolution of this great music?
Mind that I prefer (a bit) Hard Rock to Heavy Metal, Hammond use, power and operatic vocals than brutal, art and virtuosity over sonic attacks (classical, jazzy and ethnic influences welcomed), but I love string riffs and solos and a nice epic/hymn tone, even punk. Am I too old fashioned (or just plainly too old)?

I was a little late to the party but IIRC "Empire" was the first CD I ever bought.
Rage for Order and Operation Mindcrime are also great albums. Very inventive band.
I'm definitely dating myself, but got to see them on the Mind Crime tour. Very intense singer. One of my favorites.
They were opening for Metallica and that looked to me like a double edge sword. They got to play arenas, but the crowd was definitely there to hear speed/thrash as Tate had to be on his toes with people at the stage firing out cigarette butts at him lol.
A case of mismatched support band probably :DHappens a lot, I think it's a ploy to maximize ticket sales by mixing genres.
Worst mismatch I saw was Rollins band supporting the Chili Peppers at Brixton Acadamy. The Chilis couldn't even come close to Henry's intensity - he blew them away completely, so I just went home a happy man.A case of mismatched support band probably :DHappens a lot, I think it's a ploy to maximize ticket sales by mixing genres.

Haven't heard anything new from Maiden since 'Final Frontier' which was still pretty strong.Guess where I was last night. 8)Nice! How great was it? I see you managed to score too! I think she bridges the gap between Tarja and Annette nicely - seems to be able to handle all the vocal gymnastics live very well. Plus she is a lovely tall Viking Princess :D

Now that I'm venturing outside of the tool forums I'm finding some very interesting threads, for example this one.
I'm in the club! I wouldn't call myself a metalhead, it's a bit too restrictive, and funnily enough, if you'd forced me to name my top5 most favorite acts/performers, none of them could be considered metal, but most of my favorite music is (hard) rock and metal.
I've been listening to rock for close to 30 years now, and I love everything from rock'n'roll (Jerry Lee Lewis), R&B (the Stones), glam rock (Bowie, Roxy Music), garage/protopunk the Stooges), early metal (Sabbath), punk (the Misfits), Aerosmith, KISS, Rush, the Cure, Joy Division, Mötley Crüe, Hanoi Rocks, Maiden, Megadeth, 90's Anthrax (I know…!), Skid Row, Love/Hate, Voivod, Hellacopters, Strapping Young Lad, the Wildhearts, Kyuss, Coal Chamber, Machine Head, Deadsy, Spineshank, just to name a few off the top of my head.
My absoulute favorite is GNR, they were my very first "own" favorite band, I grew up at the right time for them.
Over the years I managed to see some of the greatest names like Sabbath (twice), Maiden (twice), Guns, Priest, Alice Cooper, Pantera, Motörhead, Slayer, Faith No More (I'm definitely missing some big bands right now, but whatever) and also gems like Voivod or Kyuss. Still, my very best concert experience was with Amanda Palmer (of Dresden Dolls and nuditiy fame :D)
Anyway, I love rock and metal, and no kidding even songs I've heard a million times can bring tears to my eyes. And not necessarily because of the lyrical/emotional content, but for the sheer love of the music - a good riff, a cool bass line, a nice drum fill, and I'm done. Tears of joy.
Been listening to the magnificent Anneke Van Giersbergen a Lot recently. What a voice.
Here she is with Gentle Storm:

Name your favourite Iron Maiden song:
Everyone seems to like Maiden.
My favourite of theirs is 'Hallowed Be Thy Name'.
Through 23 years and countless listens, it's still exciting and monumental.
Beginning quietly with a gentle riff, Bruce Dickinson (at his finest) singing Steve Harris' lyrics (best ever IMO) becomes the condemned man, waiting for his own execution. The song slowly builds with Bruce and the guitars taking it in turns to raise the tension. The song explodes into an amazing crescendo of dual guitars and soloing that still sends shivers up my spine.
If you haven't heard it already - what are you waiting for?
What's your favourite Maiden song?
Here is a group that I became fascinated with earlier this year:Wow that was a rabbit hole I didn’t need
