Having problems holding on to your philosophy? :D
Maybe you need a set of Kant-Slip Pliers. This multi tool has really cool shape and features. Pliers, hammer, and screwdriver all wrapped up in a curvey shape that is really appealing.
The lower arm is on a pivoting plier arm that is inserted through the upper plier arm instead of the usual plier side by side arm. There is also a toggle that allows you to change the angle of the lower arm thus changing the jaw angle.
The patents for this one are from 1920 and 1921.

Yay, I just recently got a set of those myself! (thanks to Lyndon for the heads up) :salute: The pivot design is indeed quite clever. No need for an axle or cross bolt. And they are able to exert a surprising amount of force. Plenty enough I think for breaking loose a stubborn pipe fitting.
Here is a copy of the patent drawing. You can see how the little toggle works to adjust the range of jaw motion. :)

Kant-slip pliers come in three sizes, 8 (without a hammer poll), 9.5 and 12.75. The larger two have the hammer poll.

The large ones appear to be rare. I may have to watch the Craigslist in Wisconsin since they are probably more plentiful nearer the manufacturing plant.
There is also another unique plier they made, but it doesn't appear to have any multi appeal. However, from a design perspective it is pretty cool.
