Title: Got me an MPT
Post by: Mike, Lord of the Spammers! on February 01, 2008, 11:31:39 PM
Only just got it, I quite like it as it go's and the rolled edge's are certainly a lot more comfortable than I expected :)
Sadly it's not got the BO finish I'd hoped for, but I'm not that bothered :)

The fit and finish is quite good, for a tool made for the military, and I can see it can take a fair bit of punishment :)

The only thing I'm not sure about is the way the tool line's up when closed ???, sorry for the crappy pic, but the side's aren't parallel, it looks as though it's been made that way, rather than a defect, is that right ???

Full review to follow later :)

Go for it mate, just be warned this is a working tool, it's not as well finished or apointed as your pst ;)

I want it for EDC so I am not too fussed on that front.  I really like the tool selection and it's size looks pretty good as well.

It's pretty big (exactly the same length as my dads supertool, but waaay lighter and thinner, plus it's legal edc :)

That is why I am so keen.  :)  BO, like my Supertool.  The same size as my Supertool.  Has all the tools that I find important on my Supertool. PLUS I can carry it anywhere (unlike my Supertool  :()! :)

Not yet, as although it's BNIB, it's still a little tight, with light surface corrosion, but given time (and a lot of playing :D) it will :)

Interesting.

Your model has several differences between the one I have.

Now I have another variation to find!

P.S. Mine has a metal saw, on the file.

What sort of numbers were these things made in?

Were they ever exported to any impressive degree? (do I have any chance of ever finding one in Oz)

More Pics please micky.

Spoony, I find it a bit odd that your's is scalloped on one side, seems a bit wierd for gerger to do that

Best thing about the MPT in my opinion is the shape and style of the plier head. Its different than any of the other Gerber tools. Looking forward to seeing more pictures. :)

It's very light in the hand, and because of the rolled edges it pretty comfortable, certainly more so than the sideclip :)

As a good, solid and cheap beater, I'm pretty chuffed with it :)

If I was being really padantic, I'd have a moan about the shortness of the screwdriver's, and the lack of saw edge on the file, plus the general fit and finish isn't as good as say leatherman, so obviously it falls miles short of a vic or wenger effort, but for all that it is a sound, comfortable tool :)

That's odd as Spoons had the saw edge ???

The screwdrivers are short, but look the same as my Multiplier which I have found to be ok.

The Two-sided file is a bit of a let down. I rarely use the edge for cutting with my PST, but I like to know it is there.

It does look a little "knock off"-ey, but then, I get people asking if my PST is "real" since some think the 2004 models are the Genuine leatherman range.

The lack of saw file, is annoying, but it's the only real fault I can find :)

I think gerber has a huge range of individual differences in there earlier tool's, wether it's by design or someone falling asleep at the cnc machine I can't say :D

You do get the impresion that gerber just tried to make a ''product improved PST'' bbut then built it down to a price.

@30$ I think. I found some new ones for 27.95$ but I'm not sure if they are priced accordingly to the time it was released.

micky, does your file say "SIMONDS USA" on it?

The file is among the thickest I've seen on a multi so I'm not sure how well the saw would work, but it is nice having it there.

Also, it looks like your model is lacking the "speedbumps" seen here. Is the opening/closing cycle smooth like a typical butterfly tool?

It seems odd that they would take away features like the Bumps and Saw edge, unless the Government was lowering their $$$ offer for the tools.

Title: Re: Got me an MPT

Yep the file is made by simmonds, but mine hasn't got the speed bump's, as for how quickly it open's well it's still pretty tight, but I expect it'll loosen up soon :)

I'd say your's was the newer, better version, as I'd imagine they'd add feature's rather than take them away :-\

Worth noting, the older Gerber Multi-Pliers we have are equipped with files that are stamped "Simonds," a highly respected old-line American file manufacturer.

Seems to be the case that my model is newer, I wonder what Bob has to say on the matter.

Well I've used it for a couple of days at work (were still refiting) and overall I'm quite happy with it, the pliers have been great to use, and feel impossibly light compared to my regular work Spirit :), the screwdriver are however waaay to short :(, I've been spoilt by the reach of my Vic tool's ::)

The utility blade I've not really made my mind up about :-\, I've used it for scraping ancient sellotape off some shelving I've been working on, but it's a really limited blade design, with not much of a range of uses :(

It is comfortable though, certainly it must be amoungst the best of it's generation in that regard :)

The screwdrivers do look short.  You could always invest in the bit driver for it.  I think it would still fit the MPT.

Do the tools firmly snap open?

I'm not really too bothered about getting a bit kit for it, as i only bought it for occational edc, where a locker would be a no - no, I'm much to wedded to my Vic stuff to let any interlopers get any serious edc time :D

No the tool's don't firmly snap out, and there's not a lot of spring pressure to hold them in place, you'll probably find it'll be very similar overall to your PST :)

I thought you would say that.  :(  The tools on my multiplier sort of flop open and then flop closed.  There seems to be very little snap to the hold.

I am hoping to edc mine most of the time.  Because of my job, a locker is a big no no so the MPT looks perfect for EDC. Twinned with a SAK of course! :D

Well while the snap isn't anywhere as good as a SAK it's not terrible, maybe I'm a bit more lenient toward it, because of the number of slippies I've had?

My BO and stainless ones look exactly like Spoonrobot's. Simonds file blade, speedbumps on the handles, also nail nick cutouts. My opinion is also that Mike's is an earlier model.

Mike, no doubt this earlier model is far inferior. It will probably fail on you at the worst possible moment. Best bet would be to send it on to me for safe keeping lad.  :police: :D

LOL :D  Actually I was working my butt off at work. :(  Pics will happen soon I promise! :)

Initial thoughts?  Hmmm   Like it has been said before the quality is not amazing.  The snap is non existant, even worse than my multiplier. :(  But I do like it's size and tool selection. Have had little time to play with it yet though so I am not jumping to anything.

I don't think anyone should expect superb quality from such an early design. I think the MPT looks a good one to have in any multitool collection and its a BO :D

Ok, here are the MPT pics as promised.

First up is the tool closed;

My MPT is different to that of Mikes, so I do have the "speed bumps" that Spoonrobot refers to in his thread.  This makes opening and closing very stiff and the handles close with a snap.  Mine also has the file edge that Spoonrobot has.

Next up are a couple of the plier head;

I really like the pliers.  The head is a nice size and shape and looks like it has had little to no use.

Below is a picture of half of the implements.  Here you can see the only real wear on this tool which is on the phillips;

More tools...

And lastly, a pic showing the rolled edges.  I am still torn as to whether these improve the comfort or not.

It is an awl yes.  Looks quite handy actually.

I like the tool, but my biggest complaint is the snap in the blades.  There is none. None at all.  Infact they are the worst I have ever seen in any tool or knife and that includes some knock offs.  But maybe that is just my one.

Hmmm, it will be interesting to see if mikes is like that. Are the tools stiff, if so it probably wont be so much of a problem?

Not really.  When the knife blade is open for example it takes very little force to close it.

For the feature-obsessed like myself; another variant of the MPT. Based on the changes I believe this is the latest model made before discontinuation.

Differences between my other MPT:

1.) Round fasteners/rivets at the plier pivots instead of the hex bolts. Not sure if these are rivets since they are so uniform and clean but who ever heard of round bolts?

2.) The file is ground for a large flathead driver at the end and has the fine/coarse sides reversed. This is the same file model as benner's black oxide version below but his lacks the other differences.

3.) The awl has a nailnick inplace of the cut-out, has more severe angles on the cutting edges and has the cutting edges reversed from the earlier version.

4.) The lanyard ring and large flathead implements are replaced by a thick and a thin washer. This may be due to the new awl design being incrementally thicker than the old.

5.) The cutouts for the backsprings are shorter and less refined than earlier. I did not note a difference in the amount of lock pressure though.

6.) The plier tips are thinner. This may be a simple production variation not specific to this model but the finishes between the two are also different enough that I suspect this was a concious change.

7.) Miscellaneous; the overall finish and the finishes on some of the implements are much different but I'm not sure if this is counts.

So far I think that is 4 different variants. The easily seen features that seperate them:

A.) Scallops on only one side of the handles. "Shoulders" on the handles at the plier pivots.
B.) Scallops on both sides of the handles.
C.) Scallops on both sides of the handles, black oxide finish.
D.) Scallops on both sides of the handles, no lanyard ring or large flathead driver, round fasteners at the plier pivots.

Great pics Spoon, thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know how long the MPT was in production for?  I thought that it wasn't particularly long, but with all these variables I am beginning to think it was produced for longer than I thought.
Title: Re: Got me an MPT
Post by: J-sews on March 09, 2008, 05:11:48 PM
Hmmm, no idea how long the MPT was in production. ???

There are indeed more variables out there than I'd ever suspected! Take those handle cutouts for instance. Looking very closely, you can see that the longer ones were cut with a milling machine. (An expensive process for sure).

Whereas the model with shorter cutouts was stamped out of the sheet metal that way, then was formed into a channel shape.

I would wager a considerable amount of money that the long-cutouts model came first, followed by the short-cutouts model after Gerber retooled their stamping dies.

I think the original Kabar is an icon, a true legend in it's own life time :)

Is it a good field knife?, no :(
Title: Re: Got me an MPT
Post by: Tarrodemierda on July 22, 2008, 06:51:21 PM
yes i had that thought too but mine was genuine kabar, not any copy, paid a lot for it and it didnt last even for two months and i didnt do any stupid action that arent allowed for battle-blade,with it.

but....i assume that a fighting knife should survive some chopping and twisting, turning, and stabbin but no,this one bent a lot, lost its shape/sharpness all the time and the handle made from leather shims bent too so much that they started to roll around tang and the blade ate its way thru sheath just like that when it was tied to my thigh from the loop it had at tip op sheath.finally i just threw it into one tree, and it stuck there but it BENT again so i left it there and burned the sheath.if u want one,get it there from that tree.i dont know are ka bars meant for arctic warfare at all but this individual Ka-bar sucked a lot.

do u have any experiences with these new ones without leather handles ?

i like the design of that WartHog( are u surprised :D ) model,it looks sturdy and powerful stubby.

i hear you.

its really too thin,if i hit it into some log and twist even a bit,it bent immediately and didnt even try to remain its shape.like some 3mm tin plate.yuck.
