Title: The wife and kids bought me a new G-Shock
Post by: Top-Gear-24 on July 18, 2018, 01:29:42 AM
Last week my wife and kids gave me an early birthday gift, a new Casio GWG-100-1AER Mudmaster.

I'd been on the lookout for an analogue G-Shock for some time now, but the ones which were solar powered, radio controlled and had ABC functions were ridiculously expensive (that's why I ended up buying a Casio Rangeman last year, it is solar powered, radio controlled and has all the ABC functions but in a "regular" digital version, and at less than half the price of the analogue ABC G-Shocks).

But when I saw the "new" Casio GWG-100-1AER Mudmaster I immediately loved it, even without the ABC functions (it is solar powered and radio controlled, which are the most important features on a Casio watch in my opinion).

It looks great, it feels great, the lumen on the dials is pretty good (still no match for the Seiko Monster, but really better than I expected), and the "neon illuminator" function looks awesome  :D.

Here are some quick pics I took last week:

Thanks guys  ;).

My birthday is still a month away.

It was a real urly birthday gift, they wanted me to have the watch before we go on vacation (which is also still a month away ) so I have some time to get used to it.

Anyway, who am I to complain, right  ;).

That is a stunning watch! And that is coming from a person who generally doesn't go for G-Shocks(just a preference thing. They are great watches).

Thanks for the kind words guys  :salute:.

Great to hear I'm not the only one who likes the design, because after I started this topic here I went over to the "watchuseek" forum just to see what kind of reviews the GWG-100 series got there ... turns out they hate it  :ahhh.

[rant mode]

They compare it to the Casio GWG-1000 series, which adds one 0 to the name, but at the same time more than doubles the price (since it has all the ABC functions), I mean, that's just comparing apples and oranges in my opinion.

I do not want to spend 699€ on a Casio outdoor watch, just to get a compass, and the altimeter/barometer functions, which aren't even that great on the Casio's in my opinion.  Okay, the sensors will probably be very precise, but as long as you can't lock the function of the barometric pressure sensor like you can on the Suunto Core for example, it will never show the right altitude.  Last year during our vacation in the Austrian Alps my first generation Garmin Fenix and my Suunto Core were always spot on, while my Casio Protrek was always between 50 and 100 meters off (after calibrating the altitude at a known altitude at the start of our hikes).  Simply because you can't "tell" the sensor that a change in pressure is due to a change in altitude or a change in weather.

And about the compass, I can get a sweet Suunto button compass to put on the strap of my GWG-100 for only 18€, which doesn't need any battery power and needs no button pushing to operate it, and it's "glow in the dark" and has a rotating bezel, so you can align it with your topomap.

Don't get me wrong, I really would like a GWG-1000, but at the current price, I'll pass ...

There is absolutely something to be said for the analogue G Shocks!  They sure are nice!

I have a GA 100 Dark Knight that I really like, and yours is really sweet Too!

Guess you'll have to renew their contracts and keep them around for a while!  :D

I've got an update ready for this topic, but I'll have to upload some pics first, so it might take a while before I post it here ...

It has something to do with this ...

Had enough popcorn ?   ;)

You know what I said about the GWG-1000 (how the ABC functions don't make up for its price ... ),  well ... guess what I bought a couple of days ago ...   ::)

I know, I know ...  I said that the fact that it had the ABC functions didn't make up for it costing more than double of what the GWG-100 costs.  That's why I bought the GWG-100 in the first place.

But after wearing the GWG-100  for a couple of days I loved it so much that it got me thinking about getting the GWG-1000 as well, since I clearly love the design, and yes ... I do love the ABC functions on my digital G-Shocks.

So I ordered the GWG-1000-1AER, got it the next day and what can I say ... I love this watch.  The lumen on the dials is great (again, it doesn't last as long as the lume on the Seiko Monster, but it's quite a bit brighter than the one on the GWG-100), and is has a double led to light up the watch and the digital screen.  And that double led is so bright that it even lights up the lume on the dials again (not nearly as much as a Led Lenser P7.2 lights it up, but enough to see the dials again in a dark setting).

I'm going to wear it during our trip to Austria in the near future, and I'll try to take some nice pics of it there  ;).

Looks like I got the number wrong, it's the GWG-1000-1A3ER (forgot the 3 the previous time ).
