I've fairly recently come to appreciate the Whittlers and their different patterns.
Let's see your Whittlers :tu:

Camillus #72

-
Schrade Walden #804 Splitback

Reason for the name is the main blade uses both backsprings.

Nice Whittlers Steve! :like: :tu: :tu:
I particularly like that Schrade,
I used to have a Case splitback whittler...I wish I would have kept it
-
Thanks Vman
-
I have to say that is a pattern I've ignored but I don't know why. It's not that removed from a stockman and I carried one of those for years. :like: that Splitback.
-
Nice knives and pics Steve! :like: I'll try to get some pics up soon. :)
-
:like: :like: I don't know how I missed them either!

Couple long line Camillus 72's with different covers.
-
I don´t have any whittlers, but there´s been a Cigar Whittler on my wish list for ages now. They were done by Klaas IIRC.
-
Here are 2 , I seem to not be able to locate my other 2 ( Case , Western )(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180523/7dbfd75bd667f233b2bc95cbe62053dc.jpg)

A long line tang stamp with no pins except the center pin on the derlin covers. Must be a transitional 72. I got it dirt cheap a while back and have been working on its spring blade fit. Which a lot of later Camillus and Schrade knives seem to have.
-
Nice ! :like: :tu:
-
I'd love to have a nice split back whittler one day.

You and me both!!

A true whittler pattern.
But I am a purist when it comes to the "whittler pattern"

Beautiful stuff!
Below are the only two whittlers in my collection. I've always admired the pattern, but somehow I've found them fairly hard to come by.
Canal Street Cannitler (canoe & whittler) in D2 and GEC Northfield Conductor w/Gabon Ebony Scales:

Sure enough, under the name Canal Street Cutlery Co-op. I'm glad you said something. I wasn't aware.
"These are small batch runs of a high quality, better made knives than any other American company.” Wally Gardiner, Founder of CSC, and his group of less than 10 cutlers are making each knife to lofty standards, at a methodical pace, turning out only 4 – 6 knives a day."
That sounds promising, but probably expensive.
-
Some more Camillus 72. Rare Black bone from the 90's. It looks more dark brown than black since its seen some pocket time. Next one is a early delrin with pinned covers. Last one is a early long line with black composite covers.
The blade still has the deep clip point of the early ones.

Yes it is. I've been wanting one for years, and it doesn't disappoint!
I've found that if you don't mind having a knife with screening on the blade like this one has and you're patient you can get them for a good price on ebay.

Here are a few from my accumulation:
Harrison Brothers& Howson pearl.
An early repaired knife by Charles Langbein using Henckels and I*XL blades. He was an importer and knife repairman in the early 1900's.
Henry Sears 1865 with three backsprings. With the punch blade it should probably be called a harness jack.
George Wostenholm I*XL pearl.
-
Page two:
I*XL pearl.
I*XL pressed stag.
I*XL ivory dated 1870 on the shield. The small blade on the left isn't broken;it is designed to cut the tip off a cigar.
Ivory New York Knife Co.
-
Page three:
Peters Brothers with eagle motif interframe. Sadly the blade is broken.
Remington pearl with broken blade.
A mongrel.Robeson handles with I*XL blades. The robeson blades were shot and the I*XL handles were broken so I made one out of two.
A Schrade Cutlery in the original leather purse. Unsharpened.
-
Page four:
Simmons Hardware tuxedo with ivory handles.
Ulster with pearl handles.
Ulster with ivory handles.
Another Ulster with pearl handles.
-
Page the last for now:
Union Cutlery Tideoute PA 1902-1911. Just got this knife the other day and it is the first one I have ever seen in over 60 years of collecting knives.
Wahconda Cutlery Co. pearl.
Wilson Brothers Sheffield with unusual fluted bone handles
Vom Cleff with stag handles.

I wish case would make a CV seahorse.....
-
I've said the same thing in the past about a few Case patterns and I frequently carry patterns in CV. Recently though I've come to realize that there is little difference in performance between Case CV and SS. I still prefer CV but I no longer let it bother me to the point where I won't buy patterns that are only offered in SS. I now have a few patterns in SS that I carry and I really like them.
It does seem like they should always offer CV in whittler patterns though, since it is one function of a pocketknife that most requires a very sharp, long-lasting edge.

I have some stainless case’s that I enjoy too, and the steel is comparable, but the CV is still better. Also, stainless blades don’t speak to me the way carbon ones do. I guess you could call that personal preference.

That is my personal preference as well. It's not only more traditional, but it seems like more of a "living" thing with a constantly changing patina. It's just that there are a few patterns that I like well enough that they trump my desire to have CV. The Seahorse is one of those.

Steve...hopefully you can see this 👍.
RR...yes, the large blade uses both springs....pretty intense snap. The two small blades at the other end each use a single spring and the brass spacer is wider there.

I did post these on another thread, could have been classes knives or something like that. Anyway, I do a bit of crude green wood spoon carving, so like a whittler.
All Solingen made.
L-R:
1. Boker, carbon steel, beer barrel oak
2. Carl Schlieper, a Freidrich Olbertz brand, stainless steel, yellow acrylic
3. Boker, congress carpenter’s whittler, carbon steel, rosewood
4. Kissing Cranes, a Robert Klaas brand, stainless steel, horn
5. Zwilling J.A. Henckels, stainless steel, walnut. Again, I reckon this could be Boker made.
Across the top, Hen & Rooster stag, the most used. Possibly a Boker pattern again?
I also have a Rough Ryder whittler, yes cheap, Chinese and a bit cruder in design, but it does work well. I would like to try something like a GEC, but virtually impossible to get hold of in the UK.
I have been using a larger bladed Japanese Hiro IC Cut for roughing. Unfortunately it has a lock, so now a no, no for the UK. Any ideas on an alternative? I was thinking of a Barlow. Never owned one, are the blades any chunkier than the main blade on a whittler?

Ok, I followed your hint and looked up the difference. I'm usually good at paying attention to detail, but I can't follow what some people online are showing me.
So... Explain it

Is it where the main blade is at one end and the other two blades are at the other?
