My newest obsession is spinners. They honestly have helped me with nail biting and other obsessive things I did. Nail biting was the worst. We are talking until they bled. Anyone else into spinners?

Not into them, but I recently thought about buying one. I would probably spin that thing all day. :ahhh
-
I've seen them in allot of "EDC" forums and photos. I see the Torqbar spinner allot (https://www.vapingbest.com/bmz_cache/e/e19f9e4c2bd92b7a48911d214c7f536c.image.550x550.jpg)
Never tried one. I just fidget with everyday items just fine ;) , my knives imparticular. :climber:
-
I've just ordered a spinner to try out - I hope it's fairly quiet, as my missus gets annoyed with me when I fiddle with anything clicky (or flicky). I've also ordered one of those fidget toys made of a couple of chain links connected with key rings. I like to have something in my hands to fiddle with when I'm reading, and after cutting myself with blades I don't use them any more.
-
Well done Ash,I'd never heard of them, now I've ordered one :wait:
:D
-
I see these everywhere, but I'm still not quite sure I get them. They're fidget toy, but what exactly you do with them? Just spin them. That is what I first thought but I couldn't help but think there was more to it. Are they like begleri? Stress relievers?
-
I was looking at tops recently. I like that more. It is cheaper, spins better and can be held at hand. I EDC as fidgets my Opinel, MTO casino chip and my komboloi. So it makes sense to me. I can't find it here, I'll try from UK.
-
Well done Ash,I'd never heard of them, now I've ordered one :wait:
:D
Any link from a European site?
I consider UK part of Europe myself, for historical reasons. I don't want to offend anyone. So UK is fine too.

As far as postage goes, I consider UK and mainland Europe sites in the same way.

Well, we might have to pay for customs again in the short term future.

For what it's worth, here's what I ordered. As usual,I've no affiliation to the seller etc....

Thanks. No international postage it says.

I ordered this one for a start.

Yay! Glad to see I have others ordering. You just spin it and it keeps your mind busy. Some can do "tricks" me not so many. They can be quiet. Degreasing the bearing and using caps helps alot with that.

The expensive ones seem to expensive, for what it does. And the cheap ones seem way to cheap. Is there a happy medium? Just curious is all

And another one to try

Cool! I'm looking into this myself. Not a nail biter but more of a nail peeler.
I thought it would be cool to make one myself so I bought the parts for a munsen spinner. Waiting for all of them to come in.
-
Adding these to my list of things to make.
-
I received mine today. It is very nice built (let's see if it will survive in my hands) and you can play many games with it, because it acts as a gyroscope (move slowly your hand while it spins and you'll see what I mean). Better than a top in my opinion. Another item I will EDC. Thankfully it is flat, lightweight and noiseless (as opposed to my komboloi).
-
I bought one of these knock off ones from B**gG**d
Should just about be here on the slow boat from China

Ceramic. Although the balls are graphite colored (and 6 of them) and not gray (and 7 of them) as in the ebay picture.
I used a hammer to collimate the eccentrical counterweights, because two of them were slightly uncollimated. Now it spins very smoothly.
HOOKED!
Should I try some Li lubricant?
-
Now I ordered a Fidget Cube.
Very promising for a finger Nirvana.

When/if you clean bearings I found carburetor cleaner is magical. I'm up to over 10  Now I'm getting into the metal ones. :gimme: Do we have a spinner smiley yet, Def? :pok: Hoping these are showing up as I'm typing all the "codes" for smileys from memory. :ahhh:

Mine arrived. Actually made of brass, I was almost expecting brass coloured anodized aluminium.
Ceramic bearing, seems to be "running in" as it definitely takes longer to slow down now than when I first got it.
For 18 Pacific Pesos I'm well pleased with it.

As night be expected from a mass produced cheapie knockoff it wasn't very well balanced... But it is now.
Noticeable increase in spin times.
-
Started using one as a coffee timer. :D No more forgetting the stove is on.
-
I was getting roughly 100" of spin. Today I used White Greese (Lithium and Teflon) and the spin time dropped to 45"!!!. I was dissapointed. Then I used WD40 to remove the greese and time was 70", still worse than before. I guess when all these will be removed I will go where I was.
Can anyone explain that?
-
Nope I'm avoiding this little fidget device :D ill stick with my beads ;)

Would guess it adds friction. Grease helps to prevent rust and wear under load. Spinners are light and dry so yeah.
-
I washed it but still it's not as good as before. I might buy a new one.
Today I received the Fudget Cube (and the 10 year MTO coin and got a notification for my Nitenumen flashlight shipping, a glorius artificial needs day).
It is nice. But not heavily built and the feedback it gives it's not that great. The form of it makes EDC difficult. I see it as a desk ornament/fidget and I will leave it in my office the afternoon.
-

Agitate the bearing (with dust cover removed) in petrol for a couple minutes.
Then rinse it off in hot water.
Don't spin until it has cooled down and is completely dry.
-
I'll try it. The bearing is removable, it stays in place by friction only. I'll immerse it in White Spirit as you say, when I'll have the opportunity.

They've made it to my local flea market. A large group of people stopped by the booth to see what they were all about. I can't say I'd carry or use one but its interesting how fast they've become played with.

Wow the prices of these things is in freefall...
That first one I bought Torqbar clone, was AU$18. It has freed up nicely and my best times spin to date is 6:09. It has a Hybrid bearing, stainless steel races and ceramic balls. Be interesting how it would go with a full ceramic bearing.
Since then I have also ordered one each of these two, cheaper again and I'd suspect the tri-lobe one will have plain steel bearing.
AU$11.65

I used to bite my nails when I was a kid. One day, I thought to myself I'd stop, so I opted for a very sophisticated treatment: toothpicks. It's not very elegant having a toothpick in your mouth all day, but it beats having ruined nails, and after only a couple of weeks, I did not need the toothpick to not bite my nails. I do occasionally have a nibble when I'm under a lot of stress, but I usually keep my hands occupied with a pen, paperclip, carabiner, or S hook.

They both spin very well, smooth and long lasting. I do not really see the point with them, but they make cheap gifts.

I can't see the point in having more than one SAK, knife, multitool, flashlight etc. Normal people do just that, we don't. At least that's the cheapest artificial need I know of, it goes less than 10(-10) € per round.
-
not sure if these things would help solve the fidgeting problems or make them worse
-

Your lube is too thick you need a thinner lube. I like one part 3in1 oil and three parts paint thinner. Use very little I apply with a toothpick.
-
Saw a coworker with a spinner the other day. I think I may need to take the plunge and get one. It may satisfy my fidgety needs.
-
I saw a kid with one in a food court yesterday.
-
I gave some as presents - children seem to like them, and for under $2 they make a nice gift
-
I got one but found it a bit boring. I prefer a fidget made from a couple of chain links and split rings.
However, one of my dogs is totally obsessed with the spinner, and keeps on asking me to spin it for him :pok: whenever I'm sitting at the table.
-
Anyone up for a supersized spinner?

Grease, and that junk will actually slow them down. Get some carburetor cleaner, spray in then spin, repeat a few times and finished. Won't rust it either so no need for air compression or hair drier.

Lol I'm bored of mine already plus just a extra thing to carry, my kids love there's though :salute:

They are unusual - there is not really much you can do with them (unlike traditional rosary beads) but some people seem to like them. It seems to depend on the person.

I just got one of these for the little guy and he's going nuts with it!

Yep - it is drag coefficient. The grease causes a degree of drag (resistance) and each ball in the bearing has to plough its way through a thin film of it (if you think how your car loses performance in the wet due to the tyres "dragging" through surface water - it's the same effect). Ball bearings run well (without load) when they are dry so I would not bother to grease or lubricate it at all. To clean it use a cleaner (Gunk/Jizer) or paraffin/petrol. Hope this helps.
-
I still carry mine but have less playtime with it, mainly because it isn't as good as it was before lubrication (I'll try cleaning it again).
But the fidget cube I keep in my ofice is a big hit. I use it during psychotherapies and it doesn't distract the patients. It helps me keep calm and carry on through the end of the day.
I thing that a dual spinner would be better for EDC. Are they as good as trispinners?
-
My dual spins much the same time if not better, it's just less stable on the finger.
-
I'll try one then, thanks.
-
I am seeing these things more often now. Seems they are really trending big time. I wonder whats next?

Hmm. Sounds intriguing. I stumbled upon this item tho not sure if it qualifies. Its plastic and metal, has a knife, scissors, and nail file. Seem gimmicky tho. Not sure it'll last but I might have a look.

I've read this thread throughout, and watched the vid, and.... I'll pass :salute:
I've already got nipples, nostrils, genitals, a belly button, and a beard to fiddle with, and I think the spinners are probably only marginally more socially acceptable. I'm also unlikely to leave my nipples on a train, lose my genitals down the back of the sofa, or have to go scrambling under seats in the doctors waiting room to retrieve my belly button.
Have fun :D

I bought one recently. I tried lubing it with nano oil but it went from spinning for just under 3 mins to less than 30 seconds
I gave the bearing a bath in brake cleaner and blown dry with compressed air. It now spins for just over 5 mins. I went with an anodised aliminium spinner
