Title: Serena's little corner…
Post by: Serena on November 28, 2018, 04:52:18 PM
Been hanging around here for a couple of years now. (Also been away a lot , but who's looking).
I think it's time to start a topic of my own where I can talk about the things I like, things I buy, things I think about, things I do, etc.

So, let's start with the things I bought in the last few weeks worth mentioning.

Of course the Victorinox White Christmas Edition 2017 I've ordered today.

I think this knife I has a 'girly' touch. Love the little flakes and stars.
(Nope, not saying guys can't carry this knife…)

The white will combine great with the white KeySmart I recently bought…

Two things that will be in my EDC very often. The keys of course every day and the knife will be switched out with my others SAKs.

And then another hobby…

When I was ordering some fragrance sticks in a local store today I stumbled upon a nice Lego offer.
So I ordered these two little guys to live in my city.

Yes, my city. I have a Lego room…

Speaking about hobbies. I also love geocaching and taking long walks/hikes…

Well, that's about it for now. Hope this will be a busy and fun thread!!!

Love the Lego collection! :like:

It seems to be very popular with adults in European countries close to Denmark. :D

Only in European countries? I rwallu have no idea, bit I do know that Dutch fans spend a lot of money on Lego. Especially the big modular houses are very expensive…

I ordered the white KeySmart two weeks ago. Just a few days after they also released a red and a slate one. They're really nice too.
Love that it doesn't jingle and that I can track it with my iPhone.

Hi Serena!
Just wanted to say that thanks for hanging around again adn popping up, your Avatar pic always brings a smile to my face, especially if I've had a bad day.  :)

Which is appropriate, because in my tongue (Spanish) the word "Serena" means "Peaceful, calm, quiet" and has a secondary connotation that means "that brings tranquility, joy, peace and/or happiness, or a feeling of well-being".  It is an adjective used to describe, for instance, a beach, a sunny evening after a rainy day, a slow paced classical music opera or the sleep of a baby.  :salute:

Very good and adequate name for you!!

I watch my grandkids assemble their kits, with even looking at instructions.  I treat them like a 3-D puzzle.

I have a few kits here at home, and it is fun to see what the younger ones (10 and under) dream up.  The older 3, prefer full fledged expensive kits to display in their rooms, makes Christmas shopping a little easier for them.

* Bottle opener
* Can opener
* Phillips screwdriver (magnetic)
* Corkscrew
* Digital scales
* Bit wrench
* Bit case

Hi Serena, mind if I join this merry group? Any corner with this amount of Lego will attract me

Fellow Dutchie but based in Germany :waving:

Lego brings back memories of endless hours spent with my two boys... by now they're 23 and 21 and into other things, but they made a nice € when they sold it all off. (I should've kept one or two items, but they were very obviously short of cash )

Seeing al these topics about SAK mods made me think about what would be my perfect SAK.

Hmmm    . That sound suspiciously like a CyberTool in its original tool complement, minus the LED, nail file, magnetic Phillips and digital scales (you mean the scale with barometer/altimeter/clock etc. and not a digital weighing tool, right?). The CT Phillips is in the (4mm) bit wrench and non-magnetic, alas...
I can, just barely and very dimly, see a possible mod involving some Midnite Manager tools: let the small magnetic Phillips replace the CT's hook, the nail file replace the CT's awl and somehow get the LED into a new scale for the CT...? That would only leave the digital scale missing... Not sure if it's possible to put 58 mm tools into a 91 mm's rear side but I'll let the experts chime in on that.

That sounds like a great knife. Actually also like the CT. The CT ( And my Dream SAK) are big knives. That's gonna give a bulky pocket!!!
I indeed mean the scales with the clock etc.
Strange that there's no nailfile in the bigger sizes btw…

Well, for 91 mm there is the rare variant of the hook with integrated nail file (only on Compacts/Timekeepers). That has no nail cleaner, though.
Long nail files with cleaner tips used to be available in 91 mm as well, but were discontinued around 2010 (http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Nail+File-Long), I think because they often broke - that is also the reason one might find it difficult to find a used, beater 91 mm with an intact long nail file... but maybe not impossible.

Take a Cybertool Lite, remove the pliers, replace the small blade with a 84mm nail file and slap some digital scales on. :tu:  It might be more cost effective to start with an XAVT...

True :tu:. Or: cross a Voyager Lite (some of these might have the hook with nail file, SAKWiki tells me) with a Cybertool S/29 (or M/34 if you need the hook with nail file..., then crossing with a Traveller Lite is OK and gives you more modern scales). No dedicated nail cleaner on those, but various other tools that will do. About the cost effectiveness of starting with an XAVT, not so sure...

While waiting for the mailman to arrive I visited a local store which sells some Victorinox stuff.
Picked up the mini-screwdriver and steel needle and a black lanyard.

While I was looking around also saw the multi-tool oil and the dual knife sharpener.
While it's always a good thing to do some maintenance on your knives, they need to be in perfect shape, these are very welcome.

Sharpened my Climber and the Wenger (I now know it's the Commander), gave them a bath and cleaned them good before oiling them.

Especially the Commander loved this. It's about 27 years old and it's opening and closing way better now.
Too bad the tip of the knife is a little bit bent, but still a really nice knife. Think I need start carrying this again. Haven't used it in years…

Really really really nice!!! I like the feel. Also makes it a bit 'grippier'. (Is that even a word?)

I doubt it's a real word, but it's one everybody seems to use on a daily basis.

English is great in that you can make up a word when it's convenient for you.

There are A LOT of people here who don't speak English by origin.
I think we, the foreigners, all write very good English around here.
Compliments for everyone!!!

Really having a good time here on the forum lately.
Makes me take some 'stupid' pictures too.
But hey, who doesn't like Dean, my little Lego Hiker?

He also likes to take pictures of his EDC.

Call me childish, but 22 pages long people have been sending stupid pictures because I said I don't like pickles.
Well, I also don't like being bullied. So, I'm stepping out of this Christmas giveaway. Seriously thinking about leaving here. One or two, okay, not hundreds. Tried to change the topic. Didn't work… Bye bye!!!

Hey Serena,
I'm very sorry. I think I did post some pickles related things too. But I was not aware that being related to yourself, but rather an excuse of creating posts to get to a winning count for the giveaway.
We are childish in a way from time to time for sure. My apologies for any misunderstanding

As I said in the Lego thread... "Good to have you here"  :hatsoff:

Same here,

I also posted a "Rick and Morty" clip, and even the Family Guy "bully" clip not knowing it really bothered you ...  :-[.   We tend to get carried away here, and especially in topics like that, where you can't really stay on topic, since there is no real topic ...  ::)

So I would also like to apologize for this, in no way was it meant to cause you distress and I would also like to send you and your father some positive energy .

Nog eens, mijn excuses, en groetjes vanuit België  :salute:.

Seems quite practical and you can't go very wrong for that price - I'd say go for it.
Mind you, this is based on very limited experience. I don't usually carry a specific bag myself - due to a perennial dilemma: my carrying needs are very variable so any bag that I might have along is either too empty (and hence almost redundant, and in the way, and prone to being forgotten, and and....) or too small to carry what I need on that day (eg laptop and/or tablet, umbrella, spare glasses, headphones, various chargers and cables, not to mention multitools ). For now, I make do with a cheap cloth bag, but it's getting very scruffy. My better half tells me it looks horrible.
My better half does carry a small slung handbag, but even then, she sometimes complains about shoulder ache. A diagonal-carry bag would be a solution to that, methinks.

Did order the Chappo sling bag though. Hope it arrives this week.
Now make a choice at what stuff going to live in that bag everyday.
Of course now with winter some gloves and a hat, but I have to figure what else I want to carry.
I'm always in an urban environment, so I don't need an BoB, but just some handy stuff.
Also need a new powerbank, the Xtorm died on me a couple of weeks ago.

Car sickness has to something to do with your balance. Because your balance thingy sits in your ears this tric works. If you are right handed put it in your left ear and vice versa.

Pet CT Scan. With radioactive fluids that will light up when there are active cells in his body.

It was a loooooong surgery. Took them 8,5 hours.
He is still kept asleep because he's having a real rough time. Went to see him at the IC yesterday and that was heavy.
Called this morning and he's stabile now and doing a little bit better. But he still has a long way to go.
It's gonna be a hard week.

They're keeping him asleep. If he wakes up he's really restless and then they can't remove his breathing tube. He also has a fever. Sleep isn't bad, but for us, the family, it's taking too long. You know what I mean.

While waiting for my EDC Organizer to arrive from Ali Express I'm using an electronics case as my organizer. And yes, it's cramped!!!

But in the month that I'n carrying this stuff I already used it so many times. It's a little lifesaver.

There are still aome things on it's way and I'm still searching for some things.
Like this bit adaptor. It costs only €3,- or so, but they want almost €10,- to send it. See if I can find it cheaper.

So I was searching my toolbox for something completely else when I found a chain I bought a couple of years ago to hang some candle thingies in the garden. I thought it would be a perfect SAK chain. The S-biner was nice, but a bit too bulky.

And that pocket organizer. I love it. Everything I need is in there…

And with that tec clip, when you go to pull it out, do you have to grab the clip, or the SAK?

I might try one of those sometime :tu:

The clip is on the edge of my pocket.  So I can pull out my SAK in one movement by grabbing the clip.

But everybody has it's own preferences, right?

It was a Christmas gift from my boss. You know, a site where you can choose from all kind of gifts.
It only took them more then a month…

It's actually quite heavy. For now, it's sitting in my EDC Pouch. I think it's too heavy for my pockets and I'm not wearing a belt sheath. I'm a woman, that's weird.

Just a word of caution about those cheap pocket clips: I bought them a few times, and none of them seem to be properly heat treated so they deform easily. That's how I lost my klarus mx5 or 6 flashlight (the one that uses AAAA batteries and has been discontinued).

I think I have some hanging around someplace and I've been thinking of giving them some heat treatment myself to see if that improve things...

Today the EDC Organizer I've ordered more than a month ago finally arrived!!!
For € 3,10 it's actually pretty good quality.
And most important, all my stuff fits in perfectly.
All the little cables, lighter, nailclipper, usb and tactical card are in the pockets in the back and the rest sits nice and snug in the elastic bands.

I only need to carry this and a few tiny bits I need with me.

Great idea,  :like:
Those smaller bits are great for precision stuff. Will you just twiddle the holder with the bit, or will you put the new holder into a bit extender and use on a MT? Maybe an idea is to have one adapter for these smaller bits fabricated that slips over the Phillips?

Quote from: Scientific American
In fact, NASA ordered 34 mechanical pencils from Houston's Tycam Engineering Manufacturing, Inc., in 1965. They paid $4,382.50 [$35,000 in 2018 money?] or $128.89 [$1000 in 2018 money?] per pencil.

Quote from: Scientific American
Paul C. Fisher and his company, the Fisher Pen Company, reportedly invested $1 million [AKA a metric smurfload in 2018 money?] to create what is now commonly known as the space pen. None of this investment money came from NASA's coffers

Quote from: Scientific American
The AP later noted that both NASA and the Soviet space agency received the same 40 percent discount for buying their pens in bulk. They both paid $2.39 [or about $20 in 2018 money] per pen instead of $3.98.

Cool guy, Fisher!  :hatsoff:

Bought a hybride jacket for walks and hikes. I hate to wear normal jackets, they are way too thick and make me 'move' more difficult.
This jacket fits like a glove.

Not bad at all. Pretty tight, so it grabs good hold of my pocket. Put it on my NiteCore Tube. Like it so far…

Serena, I'm not familiar with this type of carry. How does this work? clip goes on MT/SAK/torch with a short chain/lanyard, and then clip goes on pocket edge? What are these clips originally designed for...suspenders?  ??? Sorry for the stupid questions  ;)

I have a ritual. When I'm at home, lying on the couch, going to bed etc. I always empty my pockets on a big tray on my dining table. Never have stuff in my pockets when I enter the bedroom.
Every evening, always, for years already.

Used them for a couple of hours now and they're amazing. The ANC is perfect, music is really clear. Google Assistant AND Siri.
It even reads your messages out loud so you don't even have to get your phone out of your pocket.

Did you also use the 20% discount at Media Markt?

If there's no music, I'm not happy. My house is filled with speakers, downstairs, upstairs, garden. Always carry my AirPods or like now, my headphones.
Good buy!!!

This is the only forum I'm on.  I dont use any other social media at all for that matter.  If you need a break or feel you want to lay low by all means do so.  I for one enjoy this corner of yours so if I might make a suggestion?

Post here and take a break from other areas of the forum.   This way those of us who do enjoy your corner can continue to do so ;).

I find some threads of no interest to me so I tend to not visit those.  Other times the thread stays a bit far from the topic so I loose interest.   I also tend to keep to thread and areas of the forum that do interest me.  This way I stay connected to the fun I came here for initially.   We have a lot of personalities from a wide group from all over.  Please take this in the most caring way.  I don't honestly believe anyone here is out to hurt anyone.   I really believe that.  This forum can be a bit much for some at times and breaks are needed.  I find when we perceive something as a direct attack or jab at us its hard to shrug it off.  Shrug it off if you can and continue to have fun in the parts of the forum you find fun in.

I enjoy having you part of the forum.  :salute:

It's a funny old Forum in some ways but I've always found it pretty well meaning and with enough space for everyone to enjoy their own thing. Stick with it Serena that's a cracking Snowflake Explorer and it'd be a shame if that didn't get posted here again

Well, it's an idea to stay just in my own topic.
It's true there are topics here that have nothing to do with EDC and are way to busy. Indeed, I don't visit them anymore.

What did I do this afternoon?

I found some paracord in a closet and decided to make myself a new bracelet.

It's heavy, but it fits perfectly in that EDC Pouch. Was the first time I actually used it today. Really like the fact that the pliers are spring loaded.
Wasn't enthusiastic at first, tools are hard to get out.
But I think it just needs to grow on me.
And for the tools, that's where my SAK comes in.

Also like the colours on the bracelet :tu:

Regarding the Bose QC35II, I've also recently acquired one and am very impressed, so much I gave one to Ms D_T too. Some reviews classify the music rendering as al little bit subdued, but I like it that way. The ANC is phenomenal and the set is really light, I can go hours and hours without noticing it's on my head or needing to charge the battery. Use it occasionally for some really immersive computer gaming (fed by a little bluetooth transmitter hooked up to my PC speakers; in case anyone's wondering, Elite:Dangerous is my current game). Built-in mic is reportedly also very clear.

Won't be arround as frequently as before, just for self protection.
I know I get annoyed a bit easy and some people sometimes really get on my nerves.
Like responding rude or responding to every single topic. Just can't handle that. Last year it ended up in a fitty, don't want that anymore.
So, only gonna be around when I'm searching for info or have some new gear.

Ordered the red Victorinox Cybertool M today. Can’t wait for it to arrive!!!
Cybertool M is a great tool set; just a little on the chunky side for EDC for my taste.

That’s why I’m planning on carrying it in my purse. Ordered a little pouch on Ali Express to carry some EDC stuff in my purse.

A nice and light, but still very capable, carry! :tu: Is there a logo on that sweet red Alox MiniChamp?

Sure is. I should clarify that I was asking if there is a logo on the other side.

I am really impressed by the amount of thought and organization that went into this.
:salute:

Seems like a bit more than I personally would want to carry around, but to each their own.

Do you find it at all cumbersome or annoying to have to open the main bag, find the right pouch, access the desired item, use it, and then reverse the process?  Do you carry a few of your most commonly used items somewhere they are more quickly accessible, like pockets?

See the picture with my phone. I always carry a MiniChamp, An Olight and Bullet Space pen in my pockets.

I’m a woman, so I always carry a handbag everywhere I go. The little pouches make it a lot easier for finding things quickly.

Thanks all for the compliments. I’m always thinking about how to make things better, lighter and easier.
My FAK/toiletries pouch still needs improvement.
