Title: First disappointment in my Outrider...
Post by: zrxoa1 on March 25, 2018, 11:46:07 PM
Took off today in search of hardware to mount a used toolbox in my truck. I decided to replace the weak lid struts, so I wanted to remove one to take into Tractor Supply Company with me for comparison. So I had grabbed my Outrider before I left the house.  The strut has the ball socket type connector and I needed to pop the clips out to remove it

Flipped the caplifter out as I use that on my other SAKs for prying purposes. I was shocked to realize how petite the Outrider’s caplifter is!  My Centurion dwarfs it and I think even my PX ‘s is bigger!

Both the Outrider and Rucksack have those tiny little cap lifters. My Trekker cap lifter is a regular crowbar in comparison. And, yeah, the PX has a bigger cap lifter, too. Why? Save a bit of weight perhaps?

EDIT: just did a quick check. The Outrider's cap lift is about the same size as a Cadet's caplifter. Really?

I think the Cap Lifter on the SI is my favorite. Not as bif as the Trekker CapLifter, but has the semi-sharpened wire stripping section behind the driver part, and the driver is better squared off.

I use that ALOT on my PX. Guess the Outrider goes back into its box.

I wouldn't go that far. But I do wonder why the little Cap Lifter?

Since they switched to only liner lock now the 2018 version of the outrider should have the large caplifter now. I haven't got the latest one to confirm though.  The slide lock and smaller tools are retired.

Hmmm, might look into that. I wish they made the 111mm line in ALOX!!!

I use that too much. I’d be afraid of breaking that tiny tool!  LOL

The slider lock caplifter is about the same size as 91mm ones... surely looks petite in the 111mm frame... 93mm ones are bigger but not as big as the 111mm liner lock models... and the caplifter locks too...

Like what Syph said, since 2017 the slider-locks have been discontinued and the Outrider now comes in liner-lock... I would assume that the caplifter would be the same as those on any 111mm liner locks...

Haven’t seen one myself to do any comparison... Probably still a lot of old stocks left in the shops...

I found a 111 mm alox "mod"of a sentinel. Both scales (ofc ) and the blade is custom but he does include t/t! https://www.instagram.com/rain.z_knives/ (https://www.instagram.com/rain.z_knives/) does really interesting work! Linking pictures for those that don't use Instagram

Yeah, I never understood the small cap lifter on the 111mm's...    I remember getting my first adventurer in the early 90's and thinking... "Hey this is just like my Tinker with a larger blade but no small blade"   I was just a kid at the time and stoked nonetheless.

The 93mm cap lifter is great... especially back in the day when it was beefier and less polished
