Title: The GLBM MultiTool Collection 2018
Post by: gerleatherberman on March 18, 2018, 07:14:22 AM
Tonight I wanted to inventory the MTs in the collection. My list on the computer was obviously a few tools short, since it was last updated last year. I spent Saturday evening setting these MTs out and photographing them while I took them out to inventory. The only ones I didn't need to do over were the SOGs, since I recently photographed them together.
Sorry for the oddly blurry pictures. I did not realize the camera was focusing incorrectly until all the tools were put back in the MT cabinet. :P
Hopefully these pics will make some people smile. :D

I may need MultiTools Anonymous.  >:D :ahhh

I tried not to have any identical models in the photos. Even the row of MP600s are all different models in the series.

Yes. This is how I currently spend my Saturday evenings. :D

I have often wondered what it would be like to live in the US and have access to all those stores, pawn shops, car boot sales, US ebay sellers, quick Amazon shipping... :dd:
It's tough to build a collection in Mordor.

You're welcome ans thank you!

It is very nice having access to so many great collector tools. I work in an antique store/fleamarket, so I have first dibs on a lot of MTs as well. Sure wish there was a way for international collectors to acquire these types on MTs withouy breaking the bank though.

I've been keeping my eyes out for a plierwrench, but they seem to be getting quite rare. But, one day I'll get my hands on at least one good example. :)

Thank you, Chako! Indeed SOG has released some cool MTs lately. You may want to find a PowerGrab very soon, as they are already nearly impossible to find!

Uh... wow. That's a lot of MTs.

I counted mine recently, and realized I was headed toward a 'ridiculous' number. I have less than half the number you have. Now I feel compelled to go get more. Because I no longer feel ridiculous. :D Also, please feel free to send all those unnecessary extra tools you have this way. Happy to take that burden off your hands.

In all seriousness, working where you do is kind of a big advantage with this hobby. Very nice collection, I have moderate levels of jealousy. :D

As long as you have a lower MT count, it is not ridiculous. :like: Similarly, as long as I have less MTs than Chako, my collection isn't ridiculous either (j/k Chako  :pok:).
On the plus side, MTs require little storage space and cost almost nothing to keep up(unlike watches for example). So, I maintain, MTs are a great collection focus.

I love my job and access to MTs and knives is a big bonus. I don't make much money, but since half of my MTs and knives don't cost much, it works out quite well. And, like yourself, I don't mind buying poor-condition tools and bringing them back to life to avoid breaking the bank.

I might use the pictures for defensive purposes if someone claims that I have too many tools... :D (Of course not - one can't have too many tools! Apparently the same logic goes for shoes. :D)

Is that tiny tool in the middle of one of those pictures a micro Buck? It seems really small - is it usable too?

Showing the pics of my collection should work. Similarly I can show pictures of Chako's collection if someone says I have too many.
MTs and knives (tools) in general are a very good thing to collect. They look good, hokd their value, and are useful (unlike some collectibles).
You're right. It is a Buck BuckTool 350 keychain tool. It is usable in the sense a Vic classic is useful. Some will find it very handy and others (like me) won't find it very  useful at all. When I bought it, I had no idea how small it was. I try to stay away from keychain tools, but still keep adding them to the collection.

I'm more of a utilitarian collector in the sense that most things I buy have a special use in mind, and do get used. And tools more in general for me, not just multi-tools. Not sure if that qualifies as collecting? It sure adds up though. I did have a breaking and drive-in theft some years ago that seriously reduced the tool holdings. (Apart from smurfing big time in itself that also still sometimes have me looking around for something I knew I should have - but which likely got stolen years ago).

I'd like a tiny keychain tool if I actually find one that works proper. Micra and Mini-champ are the closest things so far for me but no pliers. The IDL T7 has pliers, but that lacks other parts. And either way I'd likely end up giving them away at some airport, so I might as well give up on keychain tools I guess.

So given that you have such a wide range at your disposal I'm kind of curious - which ones do you end up using the most?

To be completely honest, I don't use the keychain tools. But, if I were to pick one based on build quality and function, it would be the LM Squirt series based on your needs. They have a good reputation overall. The PS4 has a decent pair of little plairs and an o.k. set of scissors. Maybe paired with a SAK, it would cover a lot of basic needs.
Hope that helps in your search for a good keychain tool. :tu:

Cool thread. I like these group photos cause they show the evolution and also give a good size comparison between models.

You have a lot of Gerbers, I am still trying to find even one model I like. I have a sneaky suspicion I would like the 800 but it doesn't seem like Gerber really promotes it that much. I have tried the 400, I own the Octane and Dime, and handled a lot of 600 models and wasn't impressed with any of them.

I am starting a list of tools I would like to try or buy. It's mostly made up of Victorinox and Leatherman though. Good threads like this show more of what's out there.

Thanks for sharing the photos of your collection!

Thank you, Greg!
I cut my teeth on MTs using a Gerber MultiPlier (Mr. PINCHY) for eons, so I have a soft spot for Gerber. The MP-1 is probably the closest to a LM that Gerber makes. A very good tool for medium duty work. :)

Will definitely keep posting group shots in the future. I feel like you do about it. A great way to compare size and shape of different MT models.

I forgot to post the updated SOG group here, so thank you for posting!

Having mild insomnia lets me have a good deal of free time. I am still saving some money for a proper cabinet, but managed a rough count and inventory. I missed several NIB tools, stashed tools, and what-not. It was fun rummaging through some of the early collection as well.  :)

Just as much fun as a hot date. ::)

Thank you very much, Jaypeebee!

As a tip, I recommend, avoid really cheap/off-brand tools. I don't regret having the cheap MTs as a minor part of the collection,  but if I had to do it all over, I would have saved that money for something nicer.
In 2 years? That would be extremely dependant on your disposable income, family situation, living situation, bills, kids etc.
I net less than $2k /month, but my bills are very low. gotta get them MT monies..:)

Edit: enthusiasm towards the MT hobby is a major player as well. :multi:

I have really enjoyed messing around with these fixed-head MTs. When I started collecting, I never thought I'd mess with fixed-head MTs. I also said I wouldn't collect SAKs. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

DHL Shipping indeed. :)

Hi I said the same on SAKs.

 :assimilate:
I 'need' more MTs and SAKs. :gimme:

I can only get two or three new tools(or one good tool) a week, but I enjoy getting ideas from your collection photos, as to what tool I will be looking for next. I look through photos and old posts, then seek out stuff that jumps out at me. Thank you for sharing your collection photos!

How big will GLBM collection be with SAKs as well  :ahhh

There are a couple more now, but I originally had two SAKs and said "no more".
They still aren't as interesting to me as plier-MTs, but I like them well enough. :)

There are twenty or so more SAKs I would like to add at some point. But, right now, I'm messing around with cheap stuff while I am saving for a new cabinet. :tu:

Those are definitely great tools. The 650 is on my grail list. Maybe one day, but I hope you can find one NIB somewhere for your collection. I got lucky with an OG ParaTool in the MT.o store. Mint, but without box/papers. ParaTools, ToughTools, and BuckTools fascinate me with their unique engineering. The 650 is also a unique design. :)

Doing some organizing today and got together all of the "user tools"(bought second hand or specifically to EDC at work while the mint/new tools stay safe in the collection).

It's going to be fun juggling my carries for a while at work. :)

Last photo shows three tools I missed and put with the rest.

Anyone else keep their user tools separate from the collection? I've got most of mine in a cigar box in my bathroom "EDC gear drawer."  :multi:

Yesterday I bought some more potential storage. :woohoo:

A very old watch maker's cabinet. Similarl to a machinist's tool chest, but without the dividers. The drawer bottoms are super strong, so I feel this will help store some of my more precious MTs on my computer desk. It needs to be refinished. I was hoping I could get the old tape and gunk off with goo-gone and gentle scrubbing, but the finish was too dry.  :(
Luckily antiques restoration is what I do for a living. :)
I will just sand and finish the top and front, as the sides look fine. I'll stain the top and front lighter than the sides for a cool two-tone mahogany/walnut color scheme. I'll try to keep the original manufacturer's emblem as well if I can.

I think it will only hold 80 tools, but that'll take a lot of stress off of the pine chest-of-drawers.

Alright. Stripped, sanded(120, 240, then 320), and first coat of special walnut stain. It is a similar color to English Walnut stain.

Weather is crap(humid out), so the photos don't do it justice. I will coat it with satin enamel when it is cured and the weather dries up. I was able to save the manufacturer logo and letter codes the watchmaker put in the recesses. :)

What do y'all think? One more coat of stain or leave it be?

Sweet cabinet !

If it was me I would go a bit darker with the stain and use shellac to try and match the old finish better than poly.

It has lightened up a bit in the last couple of hours, so it will definitely need one more stain treatment.

Like I said above, it'll have to have one more staining, because it soaked it up better than I had anticipated. I am digging the tones and grain of the wood though. :)

The weather is just awful today, so I'm going to work on it tomorrow or whenever it clears up. Some serious English weather today. :ahhh

My best guess is 80 or so 4" tools. I wish the drawers were 8"+ deep, but they are only 6" deep, so diagonal storage will have to do.

I've got 150 MTs in a cheap chest of drawers, so this chest should take a big load off of it. The cheap chest already has sagging drawer bottoms. The watchmaker chest has really strong drawer bottoms.
I wish the lady had more than the one chest, as I'd love to get all 280 tools tucked away neatly in watchmaker chests.

The cabinet I've been working on is finished and I had poorly estimated the number of tools it would house. I figured about 80 multitools, but after getting a game plan on using the small cabinet, it holds 146 multitools right now and could hold 6-8 more mid-sized tools. The insides of the drawers are 7-3/4" deep and 22" wide. Not the best for MTs, but pretty good. :)

After stripping, sanding, and first stain.

After 4 coats of stain and three clear coats.

Here are the drawers loaded up. The blue towels will be replaced with orange felt as soon as it comes in from amazon and I can use the guillotine to cut it to size for the new drawer liners. None of the drawers have any sagging. :woohoo:

It is roughly half of my modest(relatively of course) MT collection in that little cabinet. The chest of drawers I had them in had sagging drawers and was inefficient for MT storage. :ahhh

I wish I could get five more of the watchmaker chests. :)

Edit: Two Gerbers wouldn't fit the drawer depth. The Radius and Recoil. They are quite thick MTs. And the thickness of the springs to tools won't let it hold SAKs either. So, those will need a different place to go. The large 4' chest of drawers will be used for SAKs, cheapies, oddities, sheaths, flashlights, and large knives.

I'm so bad about never finishing projects at the house, so this was a rare win and maybe motivation to get some more looming projects completed. :)

The only thing bugging me is the Radius and Recoil not being with the rest of the Gerbers. The LM MUT went in with the clip removed. Just need to quite fretting over it for now. :ahhh

So I have some 'orange' felt on the way, but am not entirely sure of the shade of orange. Just as an experiment, I shot a few photos on an a bright orange towel. Not too sure on the results. Hopefully the felt will be much more subdued and less reflective. :ahhh

That's a great collection you have! And the cabinet looks so cool, you've done a great job with that,  :hatsoff:

Out of interest, i know its a difficult one to answer, but as you have a good variety of brands there, if you HAD to choose just one brand only to keep (and get rid of the rest), what would it be and why?

Its a difficult one im sure, but try your best hahaha!

Oh man. That is one hell of a question.  :ahhh

To be completely honest, it would probably be Leatherman. That isn't anything to do with me thinking their tools are superior to the other company's tools quality-wise. Just to make that clear. :ahhh
It boils down to what I carry as my primary work tool. That is a Surge with 21pc bit set(42 drivers), 2 MUT bits(super long for recessed screws, file and different saw blades for the t-shank holder. It gives me maximum function in as small of a package you can get with that capability. So, my answer boils down to the variety of accessories and how they work.

Now, with that out if the way, my official stance and fervent opinion about manufacturer preference is:

I want them all!

Im mainly leatherman, but i have a few saks, but i always fancied trying out a Gerber. The problem i have is that once i get one, i always fancy another, and then another, and then...........before you know it, its gotten out of control! just like what happened shortly after i bought my first leatherman! Sound familiar anyone?

It was a good question and thank you for asking. It wasn't something I had given much thought to.

I completely understand not branching off into more brands. The whole collecting thing, for me, began with a search for something to replace a Gerber Multi-Plier, which I had carried everyday over 10 years) that was at the end of its' usable life(however, since I began restoring the MTs I buy to some extent, it is now being used by my father). I first bought a PST, then a Crunch, then an MP600, then some cheaper tools(kind of fell for the cheap-charm). You're spot-on though, as MTs seem to be a highly addictive hobby. Functional, aesthetically pleasing, easy to maintain, take up less space, mostly affordable(compared to cars and such), and have a great community here at MT.o.

Leatherman is definitely one of the best brands to get into. They are pretty consistent in quality, where Gerber and SOG have and/or do produce some pretty bad tools alongisde their better tools.
There is a lot to like about  Vics, Gerbers, SOGs, Bear & Sons, old Schrade, BuckTools, Ganzo, etc. It is a lot of fun seeing all the brands together. Each company has a lot of great tools.

Again, thank you for asking, RicHT.

been so absent from this thread lately.
I knew that your first pick would be LM,    and I was really looking forward to the updated chest and collection pics!  :o :gimme:

you choose Leatherman for work and job use,  ;)
but it was a MultiPlier that lighted up the fuse,
as a very long time Gerber user, you were a fan,  :)
both brands are great, thus GerLeatherBerMan  8)

you explored  the first Leatherman tool, also the Crunch,
returned to the MP series and got cheap tools...a bunch  :D
you were able to tell the bad from the good quality,
quickly starting to make your MT collection a reality   ::)

staring with Gerber and LM, the two original tool brands,
building up on SOG and Vic in an effort that still stands
You found all the weird, the old, the odd and the rare  :o
the variety you built, surely nothing can quite compare

After all you finally set up a storage place
that is up to this great collection's worth,
you've proven fast in this awesome race,
and I encourage you: keep going forth!

So, the felt is more of an antique-gold/marigold color, but looks pretty good. And it was dirt cheap.  I'll take some nicer pictures soon, but here is how the felt looks instead of the blue towel liners.
I moved most of the keychain tools to another storage to make room for future acquisitions. The Radius and Recoil still don't fit with the thinner felt. Oh well.

The SOG drawers have been organized to accommodate the PPP Deluxe and Paladin PT-510. :)

I have been focusing on just a few forums on here at the moment...and this photo reminds me that I haven't as yet moved to get any of the newer SOGs for my collection...now that the watch kick is mostly over for now, and am currently on a Raspberry Pi kick...it might be time once that is over to maybe start collecting MTs again...time will tell.

Your collection is growing nicely gerleatherberman.  :hatsoff:

Some of their newer stuff is really cool and innovative, while some are lackluster. However, I must say, they are still worth acquiring.
The Baton and Sync series are serious standouts in terms of uniqueness and fair quality. :)

It took a lot of time, effort, and expenditure to get somewhat organized. I sure wish the rest of the collection(outside of SOG, LM, Gerber Victorinox, and Bear) were as organized.

Seeing as 2019 is coming up, I finally laid out all of the "beater tools" for a good cleaning and adjustment session.
If it is cool with y'all, there will be a new thread for 2019, with all new images and organisation. Since the last set of photos, there have been a bunch of tools added to the collection. The ones in these photos are duplicates of unused tools stored away.

All of your support and encouragement is very much appreciated. This is a favorite hobby of mine and MT.o members(and friends) have provided an awesome reprieve from the world I live/work in, where few seem to understand MT collecting.

2019 may be a bit harder. Most of the collection revolves around the less expensive tools. The ones I now need from SOG, LM, Gerber, Vic, etc. are the pricier ones. :ahhh
Should be fun tracking some down though. :woohoo:

I don't know if my bank account can handle many new models.
But, it won't stop me trying. :D
