Title: Names for your SAKs
Post by: AlephZero on July 27, 2013, 05:02:15 AM
I tried to search for an earlier post, but found nothing (my search-fu is not strong enough),
So, if this has been done before, please ignore this and direct me to the relevant post...

Do you guys give names for your SAKs/other MTs?

My beloved new Huntsman is called Heather (she's a lovely redhead  :D)
And my LM Skeletool is called Jack (no need to explain that I'm sure)

How about yours, guys?

I don't name my SAKs either, and I think the real problem might occur when one SAK starting to have twins, triplets or even quadruplets...and if mixed in a bunch, I'd be fooling myself to be able to tell who is who  :D

Ah, it's a probably 25 to 30 year old 110mm russian (soviet) newtonian... not sure of the exact model  ???

Thus far I've just called it "Sirius" as the astronomical society in my town i used to belong to is named that  :)

EDIT: Quick Google search gave me an idea it could be TAL-1, at least it looks exactly like the one i have, except mine is grey

Sirius is fine. You might call it Talos though.

Yes, Ancient Greeks invented Super Heroes (including Iron Man) and robots also.

I named my two custom SAKs, but not like human names.  91mm cellidor is the Yeochamp, and the 93mm alox is the Mechaneer :)

I unofficially named one of my SAKs. I have a Huntsman. I got it when I was 18 (I'm 32 now). I EDCed it for almost three years, it got use as a tacklebox knife, it was used extensively on a construction site, it fell to the bottom of a lake, where I had to stick a flashlight in my teeth and fish it out. I've replaced the scales twice; the first was just standard red, the second time in royal blue. The tweezers and toothpick were replaced many times. The Huntsman has never been sent in for warranty work.

Because of the noises I make when using it, it's gotten the nickname "motherf***er". Even when I'm not using it, I can say "get my mother****er" and everybody knows what to do. The Huntsman hasn't even loosened up to where there's blade play, but a few of the tools are broken. Maybe I need a new one...

I guess it never really occurred to me to give them names, other than the fact that they already have model names from the manufacturer.

Nothing wrong with naming your SAK's;

Huntsman - Dwight (After Dwight Schrute from the US office who carries one at all times and is a brilliant character; Beet Farmer, Deputy Sheriff, Assistant (to) the Regional Manager) etc etc.

Explorer - Mary (after Mary Malone from His Dark Materials)

SI - Starbuck (the best Soldier of all - See rebooted BSG)

Farmer - Giles ( obviously, but also Giles from Buffy)

Recruit - Gavin (because it's got 'Gavin' inscribed on it).

I was always good with names, unique names! Mines a syph007 custom that I had to name, all my others are regular and have already been named by manufacture, so since the custom needed a name I came up with "the Pharmber" here's how, it originated from a pioneer, thus the "P" but it's more like a farmer with the tools that it has, so add the "H" and the "PH" becomes a "F" sound, on top of that I'm a plumber as the name says, so since this a one of a kind for me, a plumber thus the "MBER" that and kinda being short for a member of the Syph custom club, lol,, and the only letters left is the "A" which Syph gets for the job, and "R" which is my last name, so behold the "Ph-A-R-MBER" and it sounds just like Farmer! But yet with the tools for a Plumber! :D JR

I don't tend to name my pocket tools, but I do have a Huntsman named Diana, and another named Vicky.

Vicky has seen actual hell. It hardly shows.

I'll nickname anything with a lot of sentimental value. Butt...I don't hold many things with sentimental or even higher value. My Glock' for instance is "The G Man". I have other firearms and do they get nicknamed? No.

My SAKs don't get named, don't hold any with any sentimental value TBH. Didn't grow up with them like many others here, heck all were bought used from Ebay. (except my first)
BUT I do name my all mods. I put a lot of time and effort into them and they've become a part of me.
I stay true to Victorinox's method of naming models after titles,(Job, people, etc...) and I make sure the name is fitting to the tool set or genre/demagraphic.

My newest I call the "Watchman", pretty much Compact (not exactly) with pliers and Taveller's electronic +scales.

In this kind of matter I'm very down-to-earth, so I certainly don't give names to my SAKs or to any other kind of inaminate objects.

But they certainly have an emotional value to me, for instance the SAKs that I got for my birthday, from a friend or the first one that I purchased myself.

I leave giving names to things to my beloved wife. She has a name for all the teddy bears she owns.
