My girlfriend cannot open my 91mm Swisschamp. She can barely manage to get some tools out of the minichamp (the bottle opener still eludes her). Her nails are not super long, but they're fragile. What SAK options are there for her? She wants one with a magnifier, but if she can't open any of the tools there's no point in getting her one. Thoughts?
Charles.

Well there is this thing called Swisscard.

Or shorter nails.
There are ways to toughen them up. :tu:

Wenger models had weaker pulls.

If the knife options are pretty sparse she can use a knife pick:

If you do a search through pawnshops or eBay I’m sure you’ll be able to find vintage items. Apparently these were part of a gentleman’s carry back in the day of pocket watches and slipjoints.
Though I suppose you can buy her a keychain prybar to make it multifunctional.

I can recommend the Swisscard Lite. Tools come out very easy compared to backspring tools, (Never broke a nail on them) and it has a magnifier.
+ small knife, scissors, flashlight, pin, pen, pincer, and a little quattro with 4 small screwdriver heads.

Other colors available.

You could get her a steel thumbnail (https://agrussell.com/knife/A-G-Russell-Steel-Thumbnail-Carbon-Fiber--RUL-OP1-CF) to go along with the SAK of her choice. ;)

That´s a new one to me. :like:
I was thinking metal finger picks are an option.
-
Heres another option...When my girl was heading to the Galapagos Islands, I wanted to make sure she was prepared. Of all of my Swiss Army Knives and Leatherman tools, she chose my old PSTII.
She absolutely did not like the nail pulls on the Swiss army knives. Nor did she like the nail pulls on the PS4. But that old, well oiled, well broken in (but in great condition ) PSTII was so much her favorite, that it is now hers. Just also carry a small eyeglass repair magnifying glass, if she really wants it?

+1 for the knife pick. They are still made. E.g. https://caseknives.com/products/blade-opener (haven't got one, just intended as an example). They can probably be used for other stuff too.

I wonder if the cocaine spoon on the MiniChamp would work well?

Ah, I forgot even the 58's caused problems. Move on, nothing to see here. :)

Since I have started talking to myself, I might as well add that the QA people with Victorinox uses blade openers (obviously, considering the number of knives they open each day), snagging that tool would be cool. It's a lot bigger and more businesslike than the AG Russell above here, so no good for EDC anyway. :)
-
You could give her a 58mm, since they have much weaker backsprings.
-
Ditch her and find a girl that can open a knife ;)
-
Must it be a SAK or multi?
What kind of capabilities does she need? Perhaps something like CRKT Minimalist or any of the other various small neck knives might be an option, or a liner lock folder with a stud. Thumb stud. Partnered with a small OPT like a Shard.

I asked Megan her thoughts on it, and she explained that she really liked the Style because all of the components could be opened with or without nails. Admittedly there is no magnifying glass on it, but it does have a very good nail file. My preference is for the Micra over the Style, and the nail file is even better.

solutions...
- get a Micra, Squirt or Style but not a Gerber Dime (Had 3, two were nailbreakers) :ahhh
- increase intake of B7 (biotin), vitamin C and E. These three are the responsible for different aspects of nail growth, health, strength and durability :tu:
- get a prying tool, metal nail, opening implement or similar thing
- I have effectively used the smaller in-scale removable tweezers to open and free stuck or hard to pull implements and blades. Angle of attack is key when applying pressure with the tweezers metal tips to effectively open tough tools ;)

Freddy has the same dilemma

Freddy has the same dilemma
well he can just order you to open the SAK for him, and I doubt many people would say "no" to that :D
-
Actually, if Freddy had used his brain he could have avoided needing a SAK altogether by putting different tools on each finger. He could keep the main blade on his index finger, put a saw on the middle finger and a combo tool next to that. A corkscrew on the pinkie and he'd be ready to rock....
Maybe the Swiss movie industry could bring the Nightmare on Elmstreet brand up to date - "A Lucid Dream on Bahnhofstrasse" - in which Freddy is a really friendly guy who helps people carry their parcels, pop open bottles of Appenzeller, and slice bread for the fondue.
