Title: 5th Anniversary GAW.
Post by: BCNZ on February 18, 2019, 05:22:47 PM
I was going to do a give-away mid January to fall on my MTO 5th anniversary (I joined January 12 2014).  Two things prevented this from happening.  Firstly my workshop (garden shed) is not heated, and even though we are having a warmer than normal winter it was still January in Canada and I needed it to get above freezing for a few days so I could finish off some SAK scales.  Secondly I got distracted making burgers.  Anyway, better late than never...

The prizes:

3rd Prize is an OD Green Skinth M-Shield.  Handmade here in Canada by MTO member Metropolicity.

The rules:
1. GAW is open to all MTO members regardless of post count.
2. BCNZ has final say in case of any dispute.
3. GAW will run till end of February.
4. Any other legal things I'm supposed to be mentioning to give items away on the internet.

How to Enter:
1. Entry is via your name on a numbered list in the usual way:
 001 - BCNZ
 002 - RandomMTOMember
Copy/paste the list to your post like usual (y'all know what to do).

2. All entries must be accompanied by a picture taken by the entrant of a favourite outdoor area near where they live.  This picture can be old, but recent is preferred, can be of your backyard, the view from your commute, dog walk, work, a national/provincial park close by, anywhere as long as it's outside.

3. Pictures must be accompanied by a short description so we know what we're looking at.

That's it.  Get posting!

Thanks for the great GAW.
I love old abandoned places, I feel they tell of dreams lived or lost & are a memorial to earlier lives lived for others to remember & build on. This one is about 30 miles south of my house.

This used to be a brickyard the water you can see used to be where they dug the clay for the bricks so it’s very deep water and there used to be kilns and conveyor belts before they turned it in to a park

Here's a pic of one of my favorite hiking spots, it starts just Nord-East of a town named Herentals (only about 20 minutes drive away from my home) and stretches over a town named Lichtaart to a town named Kasterlee, over a distance of just over 10 km (6.2 Miles), which is quite big over here (and ridiculously small for you guys in the U.S.).  Actually, it starts in a town named Nijlen, and from there it goes to Herentals (also for about 10 km or 6.2 Miles), but that first piece is not very wide, with an average of around 0,5 Km in width, and it get interrupted at Herentals with industrial sites and the town itself, so I wouldn't count it as being one piece.

Anyway, it's actually a couple of long stretched sand dunes, dating back to the last ice age, and it's one of my favorite hiking spots.

This picture is special to me because it was during a trip to Atalanta, GA last year with my wife and youngest son. The day that picture was taken, we headed home.

A few hours after getting home to Georgetown, KY, I was taken to the ER of Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.

After getting to the ER and having a right bundle block ( right side of heart not working...) during an angiogram, I experienced a left bundle block. My heart stopped and I coded right there on the table.

After a few zaps, they got my heart stopped. After coming off the ventilator I received a pacemaker and was woken up. Spent a week in ICU then six weeks recovering at home.

Then I got back to my life. Life. Important word there!  Scary thing!!

(Almost the last picture ever...)

Oh, I also had my MT.O red Pioneer X with me!!!

So here's my backyard, at the end of summer, on the evening of a 36° day.

Not an entry, just playing along. Please omit me from the draw  :salute:

This photo was taken Christmas Day 2013, and that Iron Age hill fort is where I chose to have my Christmas dinner, away from all the usual obligations and trappings of the day. For fans of The Princess Bride, it's where (or very close to where) the battle of wits between Wesley and Vizzini with the iocane powder was shot.

I was wrong! It wasn't the scene of the battle of wits, it was the fight with Fezzik just before, and in the background shortly after where Humperdink spots them from horseback (which is quite impressive, as the battle of wits and hill tumble was shot in North Yorkshire apparently) you can see it in the background as they ride off.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=niul8Hy-3wk

And shortly afterwards, as they approach the fire swap, they run down to the top of Cave Dale in Castleton, which is a steep shingle path that leads down to The Devil's Arse (Peak Cavern), and to an antique shop which featured in one of the UK meets. We'd bought a load of Swiss army knives there, and then suddenly Sparky415, Nuphoria, Hedgekid and a blow up doll were roped into a musical reenactment of a scene from Titanic by the shopkeeper, while Gareth and I wet ourselves laughing  :D

Awesome photos everyone!  Some nice looking (and movie famous!) places.

I've spoken with the official 5th Anniversary GAW Adjudicator...

...and she has agreed to let the competition run till the weekend.  I'll do a random draw Sunday morning pacific standard time (March 3) and post the results.

Thought I would post a couple more.
First is a place I'm sure was abandoned during the dust bowl for lack of water. I always thought of it as busted dreams.

Walked over to the little well house after taking the second shot .........it was full of rattle snakes.

Interesting fact - If you turn 180 degrees from where I took the photo you would see the Glen Finnan Viaduct in the distance, which was the railway viaduct used in the Harry Potter films.

First off congratulations on 5 years.

The first picture is of my backyard which is one of my favorite places to be and one of my favorite outdoor friends. Mrs Kitty is an excellent tree climber, she has all the tools she needs built into her hands (paws). Not nearly as exciting you guy's other pictures but it really sums up my life.

And Aloha, I have that exact same wood stove in your pictures, just thought that was neat.

It helps me keep warm in the winter, it's actually my second stove, my main wood stove is much bigger and lives in the basement. I use the little one by itself when it's not crazy cold and together with the big one when it is.

It was made in Norway, they sure know how to make a great stove. When your primary source of heat is wood it helps to have options.

Over breakfast I asked mrs BCNZ to pick three numbers between 1 and 24.  I figured she's just as random as any internet number generator  :D.

"Pick three numbers between 1 and 24, label them third, second, first"
"Why?"
"I'm giving away knives on the internet"
"Is this that weird burger thing you are doing?"
*Official 5th Anniversary GAW Adjudicator shambles over to try get some toast*.

Here are the results!

Third prize (Skinth M-Shield) goes to number 14 - Aloha.

Second prize (Victorinox Electrician) goes to number 06 - Poncho65.

First prize (Victorinox Climber with Pacific Yew Scales) goes to number 24 - Zoidberg.

Congratulations!  PM me your addresses and I'll send them out.

Thank you very much BCNZ my Skinth arrived.  Its a gorgeous color ( my favorite ) green.  I sat for a while to decide which SAK I'd try out in it.  I am not certain of my choice but for now this is how I'll roll.

:hatsoff: to Mrs BCNZ for picking the numbers.

Most appreciative.

Thank you.  I'll carry it today and see if my SAK choice makes sense.  Great thing about a Skinth is versatility in what this one will hold.  I put my Juice in it and it fit very nicely.

Zoidbergs Yew Climber is in the post.  Small package airmail, no tracking unfortunately.  Canada Post said it should take 2-3 weeks to get to New Zealand.

Thank you so much B.
Unfortunately the scales are just way too nice and as soon as the missus walked in she spotted it and has claimed it.
