I might have missed it, but has anyone seen any plans for an Apollo 11 50th Anniversary knife?
-
Do you mean will Victorinox re-releasing something like the Astronaut? That'd be neat!
I don't know whether Victorinox did make any showcase in shotshow this yeear, but I did read about Case making one:

Swiza made a space themed knife with an astronaut drawn on the scales.
-
Really? I can't find any mention of an astronaut Swiza on their website.
There was an alox Pioneer sold by the Schweizermessershop which had an astronaut theme.
(I am sure I posted a picture of it somewhere on the forum, but I can't find it so here is one from Swissknives.info)
Anyway, this had nothing to do with Nasa or the moon landing, it was just a fun design.

Schweizermesser Essen showed this on their Facebook page with the note "now in stock".

Nice!
So the black coated edition was limited to 10 pieces?! No surprises, they seem to have gone already. I wonder what they cost?
The standard non coated version is still available - you can pick which number you get (XXX/100), which is pretty cool. Not cheap but I am a sucker for things like this...

Beautiful knives! I'm a space race collector so I'll be busy from the looks of it. Yes, I meant a 50th Anniversary Astronaut release.
-
...my dad was one of his company's reps for Apolo missions. He got me patches from the more "down to earth" astros.
I would be interested in a 50th...

Not a SAK, but Case has released an Astronaut Knife (https://www.casexx.com/Pattern/DisplayPattern.asp?PatternAutoId=235)
Though I have no idea what the history on this piece is.

I think this Case 'survial' knife is included inside a 'survival' pack for the Astronauts, it make perfect sense though.
-
They made that one for chopping through jungles on the moon, obviously...
-
Exactly my thought as well
If the moon was made of cheese on the other hand... :D
-
...must be just commemorative, I guess you can logo anything with or without permission...

I think the intended use was after re-entry and landing if they should come down in an unplanned location.

Do you know if it ever was brought on a mission?

Yes, according to Case's website, it did travel to the Moon and back on nine missions as part of the Apollo's missions. It is an interesting read, and the design does make sense to me--with a blunt nose to pry, lightweight, machete blade and small saw tooth on top, it made more sense to me as a 'survival knife' than most common sawback knife we see on the market.

There's a pretty good Russian movie called Spacewalker which tells the story of Alexei Leonov's 1965 trip into space. After an adventurous time in orbit the Cosmonauts landed plunk in the middle of the Siberian snowscape where they had to survive for a day or two, freezing their butts off, while helicopters chugged all over the place trying to find them.
So, yeah, such a knife would have been pretty useful for making firewood etc!

Cool! :tu:
I never got into collecting anything in specific,

Very nice! The green helmet glass is a nice touch on an otherwise black and white SAK! Really pops out.
I am trying to decide what to do with my non-black #12... it would be a good present for my brother who was born 50 years ago. Or I might just keep it...

You’re right- this model feels great. It would be an awesome present!
