In one word sum up your opinion of the Standard Issue wether it be Wenger or Vic's offering

I'm a big fan of my Wenger SI. You really can't go wrong with the in-line awl and the solid feeling build is very pleasing. :)

Absent! I don't have one :D

ooops, I missed the 'one word' requirement and brevity has never really been my strong point.
How about one I did at least use: Solid. :salute:

I recently got a Wenger SI in a trade and love it. As others have said it feels solid and well built.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Because I was afraid of knives
When I was just a lad
My father gave me a shiney SI
And told me to filet a shad
But then one day I learned a word
That saved me aching nose
The biggest word I ever heard
And this is how it goes:
Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Even though the sound of it
Is something quite atrocious
If you say it loud enough
You'll always sound precocious
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Nice. Where did you get the SI from Dunc?
-
So sad..
The tip broke off the canopener..and I really didn't use that much force.. :P
Is it me, or is the old brushed steel more brittle? ???

It was a gift from Benner a few years back :D
-
Robust
But mostly for me a base for my mods. After all for me a 'standard issue' needs scissors. :D

The older steel is much more brittle. I've noticed it most in the backsprings, they are way more fragile than modern springs.

This thread prompted me to read Up a bit about the soldier on sakwiki where it says,
This is the only Victorinox Swiss Army Knife that has the year of production stamped on the tang of the main blade.
But the settler I received this morning from zag has one also i think.

I have lots of other alox knives with date stamped blades.
Pioneer, Settler, Solo, Farmers etc. I've seen many others as well.
Not really that rare and I see them forsale quite often.
My guess would be when the main blade broke it was sent off for repair and spare blades were used up.
Or even spares were used when they were made in the factory?
I've never been able to get a good source of info on them.
-
I've always understood it that they were using up extra blades that were made for the Soldier model.
-
I thought this would be the case,
So sakwiki is not gospel, shame victorinox does not have a similar official site.
Still a very handy source of info though.
Sorry to have slightly derailed the thread. As you were.
-
Sakwiki is kind of right , the other models aren't supposed to have date codes.

That's my understanding as well. The Alox Soldier was the only one that always came with a date code. Any other alox wouldn't normally come stamped and those that did were the exception to the rule.
Oh, here's my Wenger SI (no date stamp ;)).
