Yep have to say that was a good buy if you look at the acceptance marks on the scale it has the normal WK mark plus 2 additional stamps and that is very rare.

My almost complete run of alox soldiers from 1962 to 2008.
Most are in new shape with everything after 1976 being new in box.
Will post some more photos soon.

Wow quite a set !! 8)
How come the 71 one is red - I thought red ones stopped in 66.
And can you tell us please what is the black one at the end.
Also interested ....
Wengers?/Viccies?/ Or roughly what percentage of each.
Also if they are pretty much all NIB since 76 - How did you do that?? ???
Have you been collecting them since then and bought one each year??
Thanks :)

The red Elsener 71 was a rare find new in box.
I've seen red alox soldiers all the way until 1978.
The black soldier was sold in Swiss Railway stores in the 1980's I believe.
A very rare knife now and I have two of them.
They are all Elsener and Victorinox soldiers with one exception being a 1972 Wenger as I don't think Victorinox made one that year. The same applies for 1974 which I still need to find.
I've been collecting the alox soldier for a few years now.
I just bought any that I found and then started trading with other collectors.
I was then offered a very large collection of alox which had quite a lot of brand new soldiers included.
Most of the fun was finding them and slowly replacing any used ones with a new example when possible.

Some outstanding collections! :salute:

Hey nsa-x-file
Thanks for letting us know.
I love the stories and detail behind the collections :)

I love that 71 in red...
Since I was born it that year, let me know if you ever plan to sell it... :D :gimme:
You guys always surprise me... when I think I have too many saks... or spent too much money on it...

That's nuts - And this was when it was not out of hand ?? :o
Did a rough quick tally and there seem to be at least 150
So not just collecting one per year then?? Or even one from each manufacturer per year

And that's a year and a half old pic. I think for the current one Jaydar would need a ladder to stand on to get them in frame. :D
Great looking pics, guys. :hatsoff:
@Huntsman 179 of them.

My first Wenger SI. :) I'm struggling to find much difference between the Wenger and the Vic, apart from the bail obviously. I thought there would be a year stamped on the tang like my Vic, but alas there isn't.

... I'm struggling to find much difference between the Wenger and the Vic, apart from the bail obviously. I thought there would be a year stamped on the tang like my Vic, but alas there isn't.
Look at the back of the blade. The Wenger has a thicker spine almost all the way to the tip and the Vic tappers down. (Black Pioneer used for representation, old pics from an earlier thread)
Also the Wengers have a pointier awl. (Wenger SI in the middle)
The lack of year stamp is cause it wasn't issued. They continued to make them for sale to civilians even after the army stopped buying 93mm and started buying 111mm. The last ones even come without the shield.
-
Thanks, Enki. I hadn't noticed the thicker spine on the knife blade, but i like it. >:D :D
With regards to the year stamp, I guess I should have been thinking of it as being more like an equivalent to the Vic Pioneer rather than the Soldier.
Also the Wengers have a pointier awl. (Wenger SI in the middle)
Looking at my awls, I reckon the Vic Soldier's is slightly pointier. In these photos: left to right, Vic Soldier '05, Wenger SI, Vic Electrician. (Same order for both photos.)

Usually the Wenger awl has one more grind that the Vic does not have, on the top side of the point, making it sharper.

Most of the fun was finding them and slowly replacing any used ones with a new example when possible.

Hey, can you show the red Elsener 71 box? I would like to know the No. for the old type soldier. Thanks :salute:

I put the effort in to get nice 66's as its my year (if anyone has a red Wenger please let me know ;) )

Great pictures! This prompted me to ask a question that I have had for some time. On my very meager collection of Soldiers, I have noticed that the shield color is much darker on some knives than others. Some of mine are a deep red where others are almost orange. I noticed the same in these pictures. For example the second Solider from the front is much darker.
Have the shield colors varied from year to year, or is this just a matter of fading?

From what I can tell from my own Soldier collection is that the newer Soldiers and Standard Issues have a darker red, much like the red found on standard silver alox models with the Victorinox shield. While the older models, '90s and earlier, have a more orange-red-ish appearance.
Edit: I should state that this is pure speculation on my part, I could be wrong. Hopefully someone more knowledgable on Soldiers can chime in.

You righ, I didn't notice this one before.
Dark one, from my photo is from 2003, also 2004 that I have is also dark (6th knife on photo).
First knife on photo is from 1988.
So I though that younger models are with dark shield, but 2006 shield is a little bit lighter color ??? .

Last year I missed the release of this very interesting book on the Soldier Knives.
Le couteau du soldat de l'armée suisse (The Soldier Knives of the Swiss Army)
It's written in French, so unfortunately I can't yet say how good it is, but it does have a large number of photographs that are useful. Any members here read this book?
-
Haven't read the book but I have looked at their website:
http://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1961
Lots of good info on all Soldier models.
And just as I suspected, the dark red shield started in 2003/2004.
Edit: Here is my collection of the 5 major type 1961 variants.

Interesting book with most info in both French and English. Very detailed breakdown of military models; more extensive than most listing of versions.
That's a different book you're showing.
Oops! Thought it was just a different colored cover. :face palm:
First I've seen of the other book. Can anyone compare the two?
I think Jean-Claude/jcfiguet might. ;)

That last one is a Soldier?

Yes, it is a Dutch Army Knife, or DAK for short.

Ah...cool! :)

I'm guessing your Soldier collection must've tripled by now! ;)
-
Yeah, it is a little larger. It would be too much of a pain to gather it all now as I have some buried deep in their boxes in a few deep drawers. Nothing compared to other soldier collections in here though. :tu:
-

Indeed, the 1993 version to be precise ;)
Before 1993, they were the standard Alox Soldier, with a date stamp on the scales. Since 2010, the DAK is a Dual Pro with a Phillips instead of a corkscrew, and no dual density scales.

Yay! Time for the 2014 Soldier.
-
This is pretty meager compared to some collections but I am super happy with it so far.
I especially like the newer version, the 2010 I got was off a forum member and that has been my edc for a few weeks now.
Most of the alox Soldiers are used so I plan on carrying them as my mood dictates. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/

My plan is go from 68 to present.
I am in no hurry and hope to have fun with the hunt.

I need to get me a Soldier. Are the ones with lanyards rare? Whenever I watch one on ebay they always wind up going really high.

The ones with bails are Wenger SI (Wenger's version of the Soldier)...same quality as Vics. Both discontinued but Wengers seen for sale less often.
-
So Vics never had the bail? I know I've seen some Vic Soldiers with the same style lanyard as the Pioneer.

Both had hollow rivets till around 92, then Vic adopted a solid rivet. I've only seen Wengers with a bail inserted in the hollow rivet but have seen Vic soldiers with a keyring like a Pioneer...is that what you mean?

Yeah.

Just recently on eBay I saw an 08 silver alox Soldier go for over 100 bucks.
Now I know they started the 111mm new style that year, are the silver alox ones that rare with an 08 stamp?

Folks that collect them see this as the terminus year of the Vic Soldiers so want one in their collection. That drives the price along with condition. I haven't seen any production numbers but I guess it's possible there were less made that year as well.

That's what I was thinking of. $75 is just too much for me though.

Some of the older Vic Alox came with a bail rather than a key ring, including Pioneer, Workman, and Woodsman.

Which model is the Workman? I can't seem to find it on the wiki... ???
-
Workman is a early name for the red alox version of the Pioneer Settler. In some markets the earlier version with a small clip blade was the Duo. Numbers for the clip version without bail are: 2205 / 0.8050.20.

Thanks for clarifying ColoSwiss. That's a nice minimalist model, the Elinox is :tu:

I was sharpening my 90 Wenger SI when I noticed there was faint engraving on the blade.
The blade is very scratched so it can only be seen with light reflecting a certain way.
It says "Jahre" on the right with a crossbow in the center and I believe "100" on the left.
Anyone have any idea what this was?
Or seen other Soldiers with anything similar?(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/11/ty2yde9y.jpg)
Sorry about the pic but it was the best I could get.

So I'm looking at a post 08 (no stamp) Wenger SI on ebay right now. How does the quality of these compare to a Vic Soldier?

Thanks, that's good to know. I like the bail on the Wengers. Now I just need to decide if it's worth twice the cost of a Vic Pioneer
-
The same. I have both and see little difference...they were both made to the same stringent Swiss specs. :tu:
The blade shape is slightly different on the SI. I believe they have more belly to them.
-
Their belly is a bit longer, and the Vic Soldier has a more severe curve towards the tip. :) I prefer the blade shape of the Wenger SI. One of the best pocket knives ever made, I think.
There were some Vic Soldiers with a bail. I think it was '93... I had one and sold it to SAKmikey I think...
-
You guys are right but I was only commenting on the quality difference in which they are equally superlative IMO!

This looks like a good place to ask this question, what's with the hollow rivet?? ???
-
This looks like a good place to ask this question, what's with the hollow rivet?? ???
On issue 61 Series, the hollow rivet was an attachment point for a length of cord/chain that was hung on the front of the Swiss service rifle and provided the correct angle (elevation) for firing rifle grenades.
IIRC.
-
Thanks SAK Guy. Talk about a outdated method no wonder they have a solid rivet now.
-
I love the patina on this old '39. One of these days I need to commission a resident expert to fashion some new scales for me.
I'm guessing it has never been sharpened, or at least very little. You can see where the belly of the blade is notched where it contacts the backspring.

These have all given service and have the scars to prove it.
They are all scheduled for some R&R&R and hopefully will be looking and feeling better in the near future.

Pic taken late afternoon in the last rays of the day.
The back round is a piece of pine tree I milled a few years ago.
If you click on the pic it'll take you to my flickr page where you can zoom in and see a bit more detail.

'Bout time I assembled my army and 'Showed my Soldiers' :salute:
Just one Soldier for each of the major generational changes for me:
- 1942 - 1908 Wenger Soldier - Fibre handles
- 1954 - 1951 Vic Soldier - Smaller frame - Fibre handles
- 1962 - 1961 Wenger Alox Soldier - Red handles with WK stamp and hollow rivet
- 1972 - 1961 Wenger Alox Soldier - Silver handles with WK stamp plus Swiss Cross
- 1979 - 1961 Vic Alox Soldier - No WK stamp, Swiss Cross
- 1995 - 1961 Wenger Alox Soldier - With bail
- 2005 - 1961 Vic Alox Soldier - Swiss Cross only - no hollow rivet
- 2012 - 2008 Vic 'new' Soldier - 111mm Trailmaster design
I have got a few others - Like my family's birth-year Soldiers and a couple of old pre 61 ones that I may restore or do something with
And I don't really care if the Soldiers are Wengers or Vics
And I am sure there are other minor or even major variations: eg stamps - I would quite like a 'VICTORIA ELSENER SCHWYZ' tang stamped early Vic alox Soldier; tool widths, PAT stamp etc
However I am happy with my army!!
EDIT: Oops - Just noticed I wrote WC not WK - Corrected :) ;)

Nice Soldier family here! Can you make close pictures of 62 red Wenger Alox Soldier please.

Sure - Thanks for the interest - These OK?
And thanks guys - You helped me - I just discovered it's a '63 not a '62 - My DB was wrong :o
Does that lessen your interest ???
-
Dang, really???
I have never seen a confirmed Alox wenger til 63...
-
Great! Thank you for pictures, I've seen 63 Grilon Soldiers but never 63 Alox

So Vics never had the bail? I know I've seen some Vic Soldiers with the same style lanyard as the Pioneer.
Some Vics were sold with bail to civilians on Soldiers, Pioneers, Farmers.

Better not open it if you ever wanna sell it, else no care.
That's why I prefer actual boxes, you can keep things mint but at least looking at them closely once in a while.. Without ripping off the package

In different light and with the tarnish polished off it this is actually the same knife from the Sakwiki 1890 soldier page.

Hi everyone
i don't know if my question is already answered in this thread but... is there a reason why i can't find a victorinox soldier knife from 1988? Online i saw a lot of them selling but always wenger. Maybe it's a stupid question, but i am new to all this.
Thank you :)

Little by little, I've been trying to acquire a sample of each knife on the left (Soldiers) in the photo below.
With the addition coming today, I'll still need to find the top one 1891, and 3rd one 1951.

I soaked it all night in Dawn dish detergent. It usually breaks up grease and grime. No luck.

You might have to use a stronger degreaser
Maybe something like alloy
wheel cleaner or engine degreaser
-
Toothbrush or wooden toothpicks didn’t help either??? If the Dawn didn’t help it could very well be stained and not gunk in there.
-
:iagree: could well be staining ???
If so than you won’t remove it with degreaser >:(
-
Would toothpaste work? I've used it in the past on items I didn't want damaged.
-
Thank you all, it's definitely a shade lighter after using toothbrush and toothpaste.
Need to look in the garage for something stronger.

Thank you all for the suggestions, but due to the condition, I have put in a request to return to the seller.
**EDIT - the seller offered me a partial refund instead of returning it, so I took that and will work on buying some more cleaning products.

That’s good to hear. Enjoy

@FB - I would go for regular metal polish and a toothbrush - It's mildly abrasive - The knife will come up beautifully
In the UK this would be Brasso, or something like Autosol

I hope everyone is enjoying he holiday week. I like to use time off to finish up articles on my blog -- this particular one was a long time in writing, and I thought that all my MTO Swiss Army Knight friends would enjoy the picture I used on the title page.

Very, very nice articles and pictures Myron - Excellent - Thank you for sharing
........ You must have quite a collection - I could not tell if you have all the years or just a selection - I think the latter - Right?
Love the maple leaf Pioneer and the 'mystery' Soldier, also the Black Beauty .... and poor man's Black Beauty!! ;)
Was interested that there was no mention of here (MTo), SAKWiki or Sosak/Swiss Army Knights in your 'sources'.
This is where I get most of my info - I guess your blog is much more detailed!

Hi Huntsman,
Thanks! You are correct, my collection consists of selected representative Model 1961 SAKs. In time I may go after every year of issue, but I am a married man after all.... ;)
Regarding my oversight in not mentioning MTo or SAKWiki, I have just corrected this. I actually had this thought, since I owe much of what I know to these two amazing resources and the collecting community, but I finished this post up at 4 AM last night and simply forgot. Writing for me is an organic process, and I try to jot down ideas when they occur to me, to be fleshed out later. This one just slipped through the cracks. At any rate, check it now...
Thanks again for the compliments and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Best,
Myron

A couple of months ago I asked for some expert opinions on a 1908 model lookalike I found on a local auction site, which I later bought, but forgot to show it off here. So, here it goes, just to document it: a perhaps German copy - counterfeit would be a bit strong, as it's not claiming to be a real SAK - of the 1908, with only an "INOX" tang stamp. Most likely from the 30-40's.

Particularly for the 1961 models, if I were to follow this link:
http://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1961
I’m missing variants 3 (red alox) and 4a (no WK stamp on box, never issued to soldiers)

Soldier 1961 Facts:
Did you know that 1993 is one of those “Transition Years” in terms of Soldatenmesser evolution... It is the year when the hollow rivet and the sharpened edge (wire stripper) on the bottle opener/caplifter were withdrawn...

Funny .... Even though they are the original, original Swiss Army Knife - They are so far away from what most members of the public would imagine to be a SAK !!

Love this thread guys !! - Thanks for all the contributions

Hey Wunan - Can we also include your recent pics - from the Other Country's Soldiers thread?

I am thinking I will put them in the new 111mm Military models sub-gallery - Then put a link to that gallery from the main 111mm Soldier page

Yes, I miised one recently (at a bargain price). But patience is a virtue 😂👍

Yes, its a slidelick model... not too sure if this particular one is the earlier production model though
From SAKWiki:“An earlier version, probably marketed as the Trailmaster, had red Nylon scales with a slide-lock.“
If that version of Trailmaster/Trekker existed, I don't see a reason for calling it a variation of some different model. Just my thoughts 🤔😉

Question for the Knights...
Is there I way that I can be sure of the year stamped on a new Soldier, still in the plastic packaging? Is there some indication on the outside? Serial number?
I want to give one as a gift, but it would be less... gifty... if the year was wrong.
-
Sadly, there is no way that I know of. Even if there is some artifact or evidence, such as an original sales receipt, all that tells you is that the knife will be stamped prior to or equal to that date. And it may have been on the original retailer's shelf for some time before its original purchaser bought it. And a copyright date on the packaging could be before the year stamp of the knife by quite a few years. So I think the only way to know for sure is to open the package and find out.
-
:iagree:
Even when I bought mine at SMKW, they had to open it to check the year.
-
:-\
The one I got is in a plastic/cardboard package - opening it would be not so... posh.
-
:-\
The one I got is in a plastic/cardboard package - opening it would be not so... posh.
I have the same problem, I'm looking for a Vic Soldier from 2016 (birth year of our little girl), I already bought her the yearly Limited Edition Pioneer from 2016 (you know, the purple/pink-is one), but would like to get her a 2016 Soldier as well (since I did the same for my boys with their 2005 and 2006 Soldiers).
I've been trying my best to see if I could spot a date on the blister packed Soldiers at a local outdoors shop, but no way you can see it while they are still in their blister package.
So I asked the shop owner if he had these in his shop for a while, but turned out he only ordered and received them around August last year, so chances of them being 2016 Soldiers are very small..

Fellow Knights and Soldier SAK collectors,
I just published an article on my blog highlighting my experience collecting the Model 1961. If you'd like to read it, it can be found here: http://www.roverhaven.com/the-rover-haven-blog

I lack three SAKs to have every year of issue from 1962 to 2019, and all of them are harder-to-find Model 2008's. If they are scarce now, imagine 20 years from now.
And speaking of the Model 2008, I can't wait to see what supersedes it. I wonder if the venerable can opener will finally sunset.

That will be interesting. It's fascinating as to the amount of thought, or lack thereof, that's put into the Soldier model. For the last two major iterations, it's been a riff on the Outdoors model of the time. I've heard that the Soldier model isn't actually issued to everyone any more... that some get other models.
I wonder if they're going to base it on a SwissTool.... or if they will change the backspring mechanism to make the OHO easier. I doubt the latter, somehow.
When does a SAK become not-a-SAK?

When does a SAK become not-a-SAK?
I think that’s an excellent question.
Some days ago I was “sorting” (my euphemism for “fondling”) my knives, and I came across my sole 111mm knife, a Hunter I purchased in the late 80s. While it’s a good knife that always did whatever was required of it, and there is no doubt that it is indeed a SAK, there is something intangible that just doesn’t sit right with me. And I don’t know why.
I’ve given this question much more thought than it deserves, yet I remain both firm in my conviction and completely mystified as to why I feel this way. I have no significant issue with the 108mm models, so I don’t think the size alone is the problem. Maybe it’s the asymmetry?
I suppose it’s a very good thing we don’t all like the same things; otherwise finding those special SAKs from bygone days would be even harder than it already is.
Edited to add: I think I might have had an epiphany. I got “into” SAKs around 1985. I think perhaps if it doesn’t look like a SAK that was around at that time it isn’t a “real” SAK to me. Maybe.

I too have given this more thought than it deserves. (I also think that it deserves its own thread) I have to say, your criteria of symmetry is a good one.
If I ask you to define "chair"... I guarantee that you'd have some trouble.... Four legs? My chair right now has one leg and 5 feet. Square slab to sit on? Mine is triangular. Has a back support to it? Mine is an ergo-chair that has support in the front when I lean forward. We can go on an on..... But wait..... three legs and no back but you can sit on it? "Not a chair - a stool!" I say. Long flat rectangle with four legs and no back that you are sitting on? "Get off the table, I tell you!"
Plato called this "The Theory of Forms". In our somewhat collective imagination we have an idealized "form" of a SAK. We can't quite describe it but we know it when we see it. In this idea, we may have certain attributes - red, symmetrical, nonlocking, slipjoints, tools on back AND front..... or can it be locking, but must have a slipjoint anyway? The symmetry gets just one outlier in the 111mm shape - or does it?? Is a thumb stud going too far? If it doesn't have the patented dual-sided spring mechanism that Elsener invented, is it a SAK? Are the Alox models a SAK then?
In our collective imaginations, we have an "ideal" SAK, and we do have differnet ideals. In my mind, I can't imagine what "improvement" could be made on a SAK Soldier that would still allow it to be called a SAK. My only thought is to swap out the saw with one or two tools designed for use with other Swiss Army weapons or equipment. This would make it less useful for civilians but more of a "Soldier" tool.

Have these been discontinued?
Another question I thought I'd ask here, does the German version of the newer soldier have the date stamp?
-
Nope and nope. The Model 2008 is current issue and has been from 2008. In my experience the hardest to find is 2008 itself and 2012. The rest are fairly easy. I usually look for the current year issue around the end of the year.
The equivalent GAK has never had the year of issue on its shank.

I apologize in advance, but my MTO search skills are lacking. I seem to recall somebody mentioning a supply of NIB Soldiers from 1993 and 1996 (I think) appearing in the Victorinox factory store.
In any case, I recently purchased what I believe to be one of these (from 93), and I’m quite pleased. I normally try to purchase Soldiers that appear to have been issued, but as this is impossible to ascertain in knives from this era, I’m pleased to have a shiny new one to complete my little collection of what I consider to be the major variations in the model.
My question is: does anyone have any additional information on this particular group of NOS knives?

Hey Frailer, I somehow missed your post, and saw it when I came back to share my recently completed set of M2008's. I've never heard the story of a forgotten cache of '93 and '96 M1961's being discovered, but I'd love to have one. Perhaps one of MTo's Switzerland-based members will have more information.
I'll be back later today with a picture of my M2008's. :)

Ok, I'm a crappy photographer, but here is my complete set of M2008's thru 2019. If you're interested in collecting the M2008's, it's been my experience that the years 2008 and 2012 are very difficult to find. I had to pay the going rate for my 2008, but then got lucky and found an under-described 2012 on the 'bay and got it for a very good price.
I'll pick up a 2020 when they become available, which should be soon. Anybody in the US have one of those yet?

Thanks guys! After I finished with the Model 1961's earlier this year, I thought why stop? So I just kept going, and now all I have to do is buy the latest year of issue every year to stay caught up.
That, and, um, work backwards on the Model 1951's. Sigh... it's a sickness, I swear.

Dibs on the '57, @SAKTaschenmesser!
It’s my favourite of the bunch. Was 57 the first year for Grilon red plastic scales?
From memory I bought if from Stefan Schober about five years ago. Excellent condition.
Have you got one? I know you are building your collection. If you should get stuck I’d swap it for another excellent Grilon. The date means nothing to me, more the condition. However if there was a 58........

I am gradually heading into the Mod 1951's, so thank you for thinking of me SAKTaschenmesser. And yes I do think '57 might have been the first year for Grilon scales, but I am not an expert and do not know that for a fact. I just love that '57 of yours and always have. :)
One thing I have read about the Mod 1951 is that the year 1958 is apparently fairly scarce, so I think you may have your work cut out for you, my friend. :)

My Model 1951 collection
One each of the 3 main variants coming from 54, 57 and 62 (blade shortened unfortunately but being my BYSAK was very pleased to get it) plus a civilian model which I assume is a 151R, happy to be corrected

Yes it does have the WK stamp but I do know that civilian 1908’s can have it so am assuming same for 51’s
https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/autres-couteaux/couteaux-civils
Apart from no date (which does happen mind), another difference is the blade pivot is visible a little like the variant 3 Mod 1908, (i’ve one from 1943 and a bit similar to your 44, which has a different pivot again) but much flatter. I’ve not seen one before so am assuming a 151R but not sure

My Soldier finally came in. It was in worse condition than I anticipated judging from the photos, so it took me a while to get it back into shape. Awl had a bent and broken tip, can opener was blunt, wire stripper the same. Blade was full of scratches and really dull. Scales had some kind of blackish film on them. You get the point :ahhh I guess that means the previous owner used the hell out of it, so I won't have any issues doing the same :tu:

I start out with a bath in warm water and soap. Leave it in there for a while so the crud gets loose. After that I use a variety of brushes and clean it under running water. I mostly use an old tooth brush and a new drain cleaner brush. Those get in between the layers really well.
In this case though that wasn't enough to remove that black film on the scales. I had to use a brass brush to remove that.
After that I dry it and apply WD-40 generously, to get the water out. Then I wipe it down, trying to get as much WD-40 out as possible. A few drops of food safe dry lube and the snap is back :tu:
I used a Dremel with polishing attachments from this set to work on the tools and remove the major scratches:
I did not remove all the scratches or polish it to mirror finish. That would not have been true to the character of this knife. It is clearly a user and has the scars to show it, so there was no point in trying to bring them back to mint condition.

Elsener Schwyz 41 (Variant 2)
Wenger Delemont 43 (Variant 2 with arsenal repair stamps)
Elsener Schwyz 43 (Variant 3)

Very cool M08's, Echotech. I love those knives.

Well, at last I have a blank escutcheon M61, a Wenger ‘88 (would prefer a Vic, but I can wait for a good one now) to complete my set of 8 (ignoring the CCW vertical W-K stamp from the early 70s, but again, I can wait for that!) M61s covering the external variations. Here they are front and back, and then in their storage case with duplicates and BYSAKs

I got them and the cases from eBay in the UK (someone might do something similar in the USA I would have thought) - they’re actually designed for n-gauge model railway stock, but fit my SAK collection very well!

Yup. Cleaner her up some. Awl looks to have a broken tip not as sharp as if though but actually still works well in wood. Leather not so sure but I'll find out one day. Carries great as well.
-

Absolutely will be in everyday use Rizio. Thanks bud action is good. Someone sharpened the main blade and took away the belly I suppose so I have to open the bottle opener/flat head to open the main blade. If I could find another main blade with 87 on it maybe consider switching it out but I've gotten use to it. I use the ask and flat head as much as the main blade really. Handy tool.
-
Haven't had my DAK out much lately :D
-
Hey El C!! I agree. I have a '96 SI that's been through the works, but makes a great work knife.
-
A soldier(ish) m1951.
It had a broken awl when I got it which I replaced.
It's an interesting knife because the tang stamp is Wengerinox and it is dated 62 on the reverse.
The front scale does have a Waffen Kontrol stamp.
So it doesn't seem to add up. It overlaps the Alox soldiers and doesn't have the usual Wenger Delmont tang stamp. But civilian versions don't get the (WK) stamp.
So I'm not really sure if it's a soldier or not.
But it is my birth year so none of that really matters.

Interesting find PTRSAK, does seem unusual as by 1962 (my BY too btw) I thought the mod 51 would be with red grillon scales…I managed to get hold of one last year…either way nice SAK

G'Day,
I have managed to add to my Soldier collection over the last few months. The home detention has been pretty hard on my wallet!!! Three new Soldiers and a Limited Edition 2018, butchered by the owner. I got that one for an excellent price. I must say the red is very nice. A much deeper shade than the "standard" Alox red. I no particular order:
A Wenger Delemont with no date on the blade, I do like the Wenger version. I removed the bail after closing the blade on it twice.   I guess it happens if you are not used to having a bail on a knife. The blade has a little nick out of it, but hey that happens if you are careless. The steel on it is slightly darker than the SAK version. This is my dinner SAK.
Next up is a 1973 Model that I got from an inmate. I wanted a similar version to my BY SAK, with the non shiny tools and the hole at the bottom. This one goes to work every day for food prep and general cutting duties.
The 2018 version, butchered by the owner. Other that the removal of the lanyard bit the rest of the tool is brand new. He must have used a dremel to get the bit off and missed some spots. I "cleaned up" the sharp bits and uneven filing. Sadly he did not mask the red bits and there are some anodizing missing on the ends. This one will be a user, so I don't stress about that.
Lastly is a 2011 Soldier. I got this one with the Wenger from a bloke that got them from his dad. He did not want / need them and I got them again pretty cheaply. I don't think he was aware of the Wenger being more rare in Oz. I have a 2015 Soldier too, but the blade on that one is not a smooth as the 2011 version.
So all in all I nearly have a Soldier from each decade starting from the '60's when I was born. I only need one from the '80's and the current 20XX. These will be added in time. The tally so far:
'69
'73
'97
'04 - Son's BY SAK
'06
2011
2015
Pics or it did not happen!!! :D :D :D

My entry: my collection has shifted its focus (almost) entirely on soldiers. And within that category, mostly model 1961s. The collection, after so long, is near complete in my eyes, so I feel like I can finally contribute something of value to this thread which already has so many awesome collections. I'm still working on it and new acquisitions are on the horizon but I think even if I would never be able to purchase another knife, I'm quite satisfied.
For some of you, this collection might look woefully incomplete and that's probably due to a lack of any soldiers variants past the 1989 iteration. Well, one parameter I've set for myself is to collect only those Swiss soldier knives that possess a hollow rivet and thicker tool stock. I've owned several post-hollow rivet knives but they never really gave me any enjoyment in owning them for some reason (I think it's cause they make me feel like I've just bought a contemporary Pioneer) so I sold them all to buy some older knives, and I'm glad I did. I'm still looking for a few models. For example, I'm on the hunt for a good elsener mod. 61 var. 1 (I've only got a Delemont from '65), a couple of good 1980s examples, and a DAK with a bail. I'm also getting into older soldiers so I'm looking to get a dated 1908 as well. If I manage to get some I'll post an update here.
So here's the rundown, left to right.
65 Wenger
65 Elsener
66 W (very weak date stamp)
67 E
70 E
73 E
76 E
79 E
92 E
Pre '70(?) Elinox Pioneer
Old Cross Pioneer
91 DAK
And the two older soldiers are an Elsener 1908-1915 Mod. 1908 with what are presumably the Soldier's initials (CS) on the front scale and a 1959 Grilon scale Mod. 1951 made only by Wenger.

Superb collection Ritornello :hatsoff:
Sounds like you know exactly what to collect and why, a perfect formula :like:
That Grilon looks to be in excellent condition, I know how hard they are to come by, was lucky enough to get a 62, my BYSAK (and have a 1962 Mod 61 as well), but it’s not as in good shape as yours :tu:

Thank you Echo! Collecting is tedious but that challenge is part of the fun. The Grilon scale knife is in stellar shape, even nicer than I was expecting it to be when I bought it. I do want a late date mod. 51 (overlapping with the mod. 61s) but I haven't been able to nab one just yet. Congrats on yours, and it's a BYSAK as well! Definitely one of the coolest BYSAKS I've heard of.
I've bought a wide range of knives and it's allowed me to figure out what really scratches my itch, so to speak. I've sold about as much as I've bought in the process but it's freed me up to pursue exactly those knives I really want to own and pass down. Looking forward to more entries and updating you all as my collection develops!

Nice collection, Ritornello, and a great pic too! :like: :like: :like:

Thanks! I just realized I went Elsener down the whole column in my rough and fast list. Most of you probably are aware of this but everything 76 and onwards is VSSR stamped, not Elsener stamped.

Not SAK’s but BAK’s and AAK’s (Australian and one American)
Maintenance day. Removed any rust I could find, do this when I get them but there’s always more, particularly on the ones from the 1940’s. “Oil the joints” with Vic oil and then a thin coating of mineral oil
The springs on some of these are Herculean, my thumb nail’s a bit worse for wear after opening and closing these over and over, overall very pleased with the results

So that prompts the question... Why? Is there a particular advantage to the blade shape, and an intended use? Something about the use on ships or in rescue scenarios? Cutting through things without stabbing into them?

Tbh I don’t know exactly but have some idea
Riggers knives as they’re also known were for cutting rigging, (unsurprisingly  ) so the sheepsfoot would make sense in that scenario.
And I believe they’re sheepsfoot because of working in close proximity of each other while a ship is rocking about is to avoid accidents
Traditionally sailors in the 16-18th centuries would carry short swords/cutlasses due to working (and fighting) in tight spaces (thank you Forged in Fire :) ) too, makes sense when you think about it, so maybe some tradition in there too

My Mod 1908’s
Wenger Delemont 32 (Variant 2)
Elsener Schwyz 41 (Variant 2)
Wenger Delemont 43 (Variant 2 with arsenal repair stamps)
Elsener Schwyz 43 (Variant 3)
And what I assume is a civilian model, Wengerinox “Wenger Delemont Swiss Made” with brass liner
Would like a Variant 1 (nickel plated liner) and a “P” model to round it out
Nice Soldiers.... Congrats!! :salute:
I wonder how to identify the variant 1 (nickel plated liner).
I have a 1908 (and I know it's not the variant 3). How do I know which one I have (to look for the other one)?

So, the Swiss Platoon has grown by one...

I also didn't think to include non-SAK 'Soldiers' in here, so the British contingent rolled out of hiding to give them some backup as well.

With the Soldier On challenge on the horizon and the fact I'm going for the 30 day Soldier badge next month, I've got myself a '96 Vic Soldier as a user.
I did a quick updated family photo as well... Although a Pioneer snuck into shot and there's apparently another civilian interloper in there somewhere who stole a uniform, but I can't see them myself.

So I've decided to spend the next few months getting the right models to ensure I've got a '61 from each decade... So a 2008 was added to the list. With the '08 version I have it also means every decade from the 80s to the 2010s is covered...
The BAK collection was also 'completed' recently with the addition of a one-piece variant of the ones I've been picking up. I could go down a rabbit hole there, but I'm sticking with that. For now.

My collection still lacks a red model 1961 ( plus one from 61 hopefully)
And a model 1891
And of course I'll try to find a model 1908 that is in better shape than the one I currently have :twak:

Keep looking for those red ones they’re real beauties :tu:
Now I may be wrong but I believe that the mod 61 wasn’t actually released until June/July 1962 (my BYSAK as it goes) which is why 62’s are so hard to come by and I’ve never seen one from 61…but as I say I could be wrong :dunno:
A mod 1891 has been top of my want list for quite a while, a man can dream

:iagree: that’s my understanding too, Echotech - my earliest is a ‘63 currently out on 90-day manoeuvres…. Nice collection m47mu74nt! :like: :like:

This is correct. The earliest Model 1961 you'll find is from year 1962. It's interesting to note, however, that the model 1951 was produced and issued through 1964, overlapping with the model 1961 by three years. The latest Model 1951 I have is from year 1961, but a complete collection would have to include '62, '63, and '64.

I´m from 1962 as well but I gave up on finding a reasonably priced Soldier 62 in good condition. I don´t like this particular Soldier model anyway (no saw).

I have not! I got it mid Wave challenge and went straight to the PST challenge. Next month will be quieter though, so I plan to EDC it for a while to test it out.
I noticed the bigger pry tool/flathead/bottle opener, very nice indeed. Prying is one of my main uses of a multitool, so locking will be very helpful.
I had a spare Spirit sheath lying around, it fits the Soldier perfectly.

Good to hear it’s smooth and sharpened up so well peddy, most of mine are real nail breakers!
I don’t mind a few marks and dings on these oldies, shoes a bit of character from their use. You do see some completely destroyed still with high asking prices, I leave those well alone

Excellent collection, @Elqfaltaba10 ! I have all the Model 2008's as well, but don't have such a nice picture of them.
I think a lot of people assume the M08's are easy and a little uninteresting to collect. But sooner or later, Victorinox will update the model to suit the government's needs, and then they will become collectible. My advice to anyone thinking about starting on the M08's is to start looking for a 2008 and a 2012 now. They are next to impossible to find.

I am glad to coincide in the Victorinox Soldier 08 collection,
I imagine that this model will be in service for many years, I will continue to acquire a copy of each year, it is already a habit and a collection is slowly being created that becomes more interesting with the passage of time.
In my case, the hard part was getting a Soldier with the year 08 stamped on it, from the information I managed to get, only 1000 copies were made for the North American market, I discovered the existence of this limited series late, they were already sold out in almost all stores Luckily after many online inquiries, I found one in stock and I did not hesitate to get hold of it.
The rest of the models weren't any problem getting them, just be patient with the Spanish distributor of Victorinox (Manufacturas Muela) who began distributing them several months late, so much so that the 2022 item began to be distributed in Spain this February 2023 ...

Current Swiss soldier collection minus the unstamped Wenger SI in my car. I miss some of the soldiers I've parted with over the years, especially the 60's and 70's models, but I'll awlways need another SAK to find. :D :climber:
Wenger 54
Wenger 81
Vic 81
Wenger 85
Wenger 88
Vic 92
Vic 93
Vic 96 w/kr
Vic 03

Been looking for this Holy Grail Mod61 Black Beauty for quite a while and at long last have got one at a reasonable price…..nothing like the US$10k someone’s asking on Etsy (admittedly for the full kit)
:woohoo: :D

G'Day,
My daughter's BY SAK arrived today. She turns 21 next month and this will be one of her gifts. It is in fantastic condition for a 21 year old tool. I don't think it was used very much if at all. A good soapy bath and now busy sharpening it. Once that is done, a small bit of oil and it will be ready to help where needed.
I would like to thank Myron helping to get this SAK to Oz. Mate you are a legend, thank you for playing middleman again.
One more left to get, a '71 for the Mrs then all the vN's have their own "twin" :D
Cheers, Pete

It looks great Pete! I need to find a '97 for my oldest then we'll be good too.

This is so awesome! And I can’t believe how quickly it arrived too. Always happy to help Pete — let me know when you find that ‘71. :)

There’s one on eBay today mate but a bit on the pricey side I’m afraid

Thanks Echo, very pricey
‘Fraid so Pete, I’ll keep me eyes open for a better priced one….hard to fathom the prices of some years. 62’s and 72’s are known rare years so you expect it but not for every year

Finished a full set of all the major models today. I know some people will drill down for minor revisions, but I think this is good enough for me.

L-R:
1890: 1943 Wenger Standard Issue. Gave me a nice bite the day I got it, once I finally got the blade opened up. Five stitches.
1951: Privat Wenger Soldat. Fun to have one P for variety, and a lot cheaper than the year stamped ones.
1961: 1986 and 1989 Victorinox Soldiers. My wife's and my BYSAKs.
2008: 2011 Victorinox Soldier. My step daughter's BYSAK.

Nice! This was my original collecting scheme too (and we all know what that turned into).
Great set and congratulations!

Guys, please tell me one of you knows which country this is from. Bought on the Bay from a seller that doesn't typically sell SAKs. Came in mint condition in the box with international model #0.8610.26. All the other LE final runs (that look identical to this ) I've seen from France come with the new 111mm Soldier Model in a special, bigger box with both knives.
Help.
-
Now that i received my 3rd Soldier i can show them all.
108mm GAK, 111mm OHO GAK (still bot dissapointed that someone tought it was great idea to remove serration and now blade looks so small)
And 111mm 08 Soldier (16 stamped on tang)

Nice to have in your collection Antti but yeah, it is a shame but as long as it still works ok probably not a big issue :tu:
-
Wow, Antti - that’s some severe work on the blade, but I’m sure it’ll still work fine as Echotech has said.
-
Yea it still works lilenit suppose. I tought first to send it to service but they dont anymore have those oval shaped blades and i kinda like that more than new roundish hole.

I like this era of Soldier like this 66 Victorinox

As BYSAK babies go, I'm super fortunate to have been born in 1965 as there are so many Model 1961's available today from both Vx and Wenger. I picked this one up the other day for very reasonable money and have been carrying it every day since it arrived from Switzerland.
