Title: Ok, who here still carries a handkerchief
Post by: MadPlumbarian on February 15, 2017, 05:42:22 PM
Well like the subject says who carries a hanky? If so what kinda, the old school 20" square white ones? The 22-24" red or other color heavier ones? Or now a days these fancy 12" custom ones? I mean you like hot rods, so you get rat rods on one side and flames or checkers on the other, or comics, you get your fav one. Don't get me wrong I love the idea but I don't think anyone's going to blow their nose into something that nice? Not that I do with my simple white ones, that's where the couple stashed restaurant napkins come in, I use them more or less to just have and wipe my glasses.

So I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are and what you carry?

I was kinda thinking of making one of these custom ones, just have to find fabric,,

Interesting question as it was a point mentioned in a recent Robert Deniro movie called the "Intern" I think.
He also shaved every morning regardless if he was going to see anyone or not.

For me, I carry lens cleaning packets for my glasses, boxed paper towels in work truck for the grime on hands, devices, tools and other surfaces.
Extra napkins from hotel in morning for cold air results of sinus drainage or back of my work gloves.

But, handkerchief has not been carried since my then new bride stated, "I am not washing or folding these white rags!"
Still have some in top drawer of dresser for funerals and weddings.

I do. Never used them for a snot catching device. I use them basically as rags. White ones to whatever size or color they come in I use. Though the white ones I do have aren't really white any more.

Lol, back in the day I moved in with family to go to college, and my aunt saw one that I threw in the wash after she had washed it and she flipped!! She started yelling at me, telling me not to use them, and NOT to put them in the wash! She didn't want any of her stuff getting snot all over, I said I don't blow my nose in them, still don't put them on the wash!! lol..

Pocket square for when I'm dressed fancy.  Purely for aesthetics.

I do carry a bandana to be used for whatever other than nose.  I carry a handkerchief not white tho for an occasional glasses wipe or to be given to a friend who may need a cloth.  They are bought inexpensively so giving them away is no problem.  I also have a paper towel folded within the kerchief which is a nose cloth if need be.

I carry a large one because they are useful every now and then. Not as a snot rag though. More along the lines of what has been said here. Would be useful in a survival situation as well.

I carry a white square one everyday in my back left pocket. I have several and I rarely use them for blowing my nose. It's there is my little lady needs it or if a situation arrives where I need it as a fall back. I have red bandanas too but rarely carry those.

I have two 18" cotton ones that I use routinely, one on the nightstand and one in the Maxpedition pouch. Red and blue, in a generic paisley pattern. I've had them for long enough that they're super soft. They do a much better job cleaning my eyeglasses than those microfiber clothes which just seem to move the smudges around. The one in my organizer also serves to keep things from scratching each other up in there (pens & pencils on one side, tools on the other). I might clean my watch face, polish a SAK blade, soak up a bit of excess oil or ink, or tie it around my head to keep the sweat off. I like them because they're light weight, take up little space, and have lots of improvised uses.

Spring time yes. Just the cheap classic cotton red and blue paisley ones. I use them as a hankerdhief.

I think those nice fancy hip ones are for people taking pictures of their edc, only. It's just another item people can collect and spend money on out-doing each other.

Or for some of us, to actually wipe things with...

I carry and use bandanas and wild rags in cotton and silk. They have a many uses. Blowing you nose into them is not one of them.    :D

Yes I carry a handkerchief and yes, if the need arises, I'll wipe my nose with it.  However if that's been necessary I'll not use it for anything else. :D

It's one of those things where it's better to have one and not need it, than to need it and not have one.   'Scuse me, I feel a sneeze coming...

A lens towel for camera and glasses, paper towelettes to clean my hands (or nose), a large red handkerchief as a scarf against the sun.

Yeppers, have done for years. As a snot rag as a last resort! Otherwise, neckerchief, glasses cleaner, but mostly for bundling all my belongings in and tieing to a stick when I leave home and hobo it for a while.  :D

I carry one mainly for wiping purposes. Usually it is used in cleaning requirements for my kids. These fancy ones I think are just a latest fad that make for good pictures.

I see the fancy ones in pictures which are pretty nice by the way.  I do wonder if anyone is willing to chime in who has a fancy/expensive on that actually has been used.

Here's my simple criteria for carrying a handkerchief, it has to be able to be disposable.

I am not afraid to use it for WHATEVER and just toss it away.  If I needed to use if to stop bleeding then so be it.  If I wanted to blow my nose with it no problem.  If I had to handle something gross and used it then no problem there either.

Yes, if the time comes and there's no napkin laying around or you don't have one tucked away then yeah, it's perfect for the sneeze or wipe rather then using your sleeve!

You know where they probably came up with the idea of those, who's been to a restaurant who uses those reusable napkins? I mean your like afraid to use them, but that's what they give you!
I love the idea of the custom one, their going to be twice as thick so that's gotta be why there only like 12 x 12" which isn't really usable if it came down to. Yeah to handle something, blow your nose, but not if you cut your arm and wrap it around and tie it off!

It would kinda be as if you need three diff,
1. Fancy custom, show.
2, normal white, the duty if need be, yet lens cleaner
3, the napkin, snot blower

One gets carried every single day, as a general purpose rag in my back pocket. I've wiped my kids noses on occasion, but not often. I get the cheap paisley ones. I've a green one, a red one, and a bunch of blue.

I usually have a random bandana in my back pocket for general use meantioned by others, rarely for a cold. I never seem to have work gloves on me when I need to grab something sharp like the frame of a random appliance needing moved.

I do have some 30in camo ones I had made over a dozen years ago. These were specific for when I was playing paintball to keep paint out of my hair  if I took a mask shot. I kept them with my hunting gear after I stopped playing.

I have a sizeable moustache and I use nasal snuff, so generally carry two hankies. The ones I carry are dark coloured/patterned around 16" square.

Whichever is in my back right hand pocket is the snuff duster. I'll use this to dust off after taking a pinch of snuff, and to wipe the nose if needed. I try not to use this for blowing my nose, where possible that happens with tissue. The hanky in the back left pocket is the tache towel. If my moustache takes a dunk in my drink, and I need to tidy up, this is the hanky I reach for. In short, I suppose I have one for clean work and one for dirty work.

Ok, was at wallyworld the other day and saw scraps of material and fig I'd give it a go on just putting two together and make something a little fancy. The little guy helped pick out which two what they call fat quarters(18x21) for only a buck each, then came the fun part, what size? Do I make only one perfect 12x12, or do I cut down and make 2, like 10x10, or cut down again and make 4, like 8x8? So I fig what's wrong with 8x8? It's a nice size and no sense of waisting it no?
So I made a layout and used it to make identical sizes then cut them down to 9x9, and laid them down so I could sit them somewhere and put something on top to flatten the wrinkles, I mean I could get the iron out but that's too much work, lol. So tomorrow after appointments and can get some time I'll run them through the sewing machine and go to the next step, but here's what they look like so far, I think not to bad?

Rarely do I not have a hanky in my pocket. I try and have a travel pack of 10 tissues in my bag (laptop or backpack) to use in preference for snot duties, but if needs must, I will use the hanky. Or if outdoors and not in public then the free air blow to get rid of the majority and hanky to wipe up

I guess I can get this subject going again, figured it was time to make a few more, but this time a little more fancy. I found a few nice cheap fabrics more for the design, a car with blueprint, plane with blueprint and another design, I saw the dinosaur and couldn't pass it up for the little guy, and for the back side the skeleton, besides the bones glow on the dark! Who could pass that up, and lastly a Star Wars, had to get the little guys authorization on the combo lol.. here's a few pics as to what the combos will be.

The place I ordered the fabric was cheap, besides the shipping, they wanted the same cost for shipping as of the fabric for each, so I contacted the lady and she worked me a deal and pretty much made me a custom order and made the shipping as the same as only one, I told her she had some nice ones and I will be make a few more, how's this for a combo?

As a Jeep fan, I'm a little biased, but they look great.

I just carry those inexpensive silk bandannas in my back pocket, they do the job well when it comes to wiping grease off my hands and the like. And, the grease always seems to come out in the wash.

Now come cold weather I'm going to have to make a unique one, maybe a denim on one side but then a very soft flannel other, I got scrap denim, just gotta find scrap for the other, now that would be the ultimate winter nose wiping hankie!

Did a couple more, kinda the same but mixed the flight ones up, but that wasn't the only thing I did, I needed somewhere to store and maybe show off? So I did some research to find out some people use a old school library index card drawer, which is cool but can be very expensive! I also found some unique round hanging setup, but couldn't find them anywhere. So, for the past couple days I looked around the house to see if I could come up with anything, and well, this is what I came up with, all junk just laying around,

1, a glass bottle salad dressing bottle, needed a little weight to make sure it didn't go anywhere,
2, a bunch of marbles, adds a little more weight, also centers the shaft so it doesn't move,
3, a aluminum shaft, was from some old multi piece mop, cut to size,
4, a coat hanger, just the wide part, cut to length, I rolled the ends cause I was thinking of putting a diff clip on but didn't,
5, and lastly a bunch of bobbypins, they have a little larger end which fits over the coat hanger, I got a few more but no need to add any until I make more, but I might get the larger pins this way the round end slides nicely on the coat hanger, might also get some nicer marbles? I could also add another coat hanger but rather then side to side front to back, but all in time..

Was at Wally World and found a little bundle of Star Wars fabrics so I couldn't pass it up, I also picked up a cheap $2.50 fuzzy blanket, they didn't have the color I wanted but heck it's for a hankie, but still how good do you think this will be come time to use? Heck, it's softer then a shirt sleeve, I fig jean on the other side to make the like most heavy duty?

Ive been carrying a hanky in my right back pocket since I was in grade school. I don't feel complete without one.

Last week, a guy posted a pic of his hanky in our local EDC Facebook group. I thought it was a hanky doubling as a caddy as knives and other gadgets were pictured. Turned out its from this company.

What do you think of their products?

I carry a cheap bandana in my back pocket pretty consistently.  Mostly for wiping, but I cut a strip off once to fix a broken frog catching net, which was a hero moment.

You know how they say celery is a negative calorie food...well IMO a bandana is a negative bulk EDC item in that it makes my phone much easier to carry. If I'm walking around, phone comes out of the front pocket and goes in the back pocket between the bandanna and the ol' butt check and stays in place much better then it would if it were in the pocket alone.

I myself have carried a cheap 12 for $5 white hankie since I don't remember when, just in the back left pocket(helps counter balance the other side for the wallet) lol
There so soft from being washed so many time so there great on cleaning the sunglasses, so even after making these I still have to carry a white one too. If you ask me the prices are a little high, $35 and up? And for nothing special, there just two pieces of cloth stitched together? I have to blame Ashly from on here because she started posting pics of unique ones she got from other people which got me going, but there of "unique" things like car, planes, movies, flames, anything you can think of, like the batch I just got of Star Wars(my sons a nut) heck there's people out there that put pics on cloth, so if there was a fav pic you could have one put on cloth, then made into one, price would get up there, but thenit would be something special! I have a few links to other places that make hankies, if interested I'll send you the links?

Well yeah, like I just posted, hankie goes in the left rear pocket, as the wallet goes in the right, so in your theory yeah, it's a negative, it counterbalance for what's in the other pocket! And since the wallet is a thick leather carrying a fancy hankie and also simple white or bandana makes it better.. no?

Our son is bringing his "gf" over so I can't work on that one hankie, but I'm thinking on what color thread to use on it, blacks a no go, red naa, I know I have a darker blue that would probably match the denim side, or do I use that neon green, the one I used to go with that green Star Wars one to make it look a little diff?

 I screwed up, I ended sewing it together then realizing I didn't reverse it before doing so.. so I had to rip the whole thing apart, at least I didn't fully finish it before going
But after doing so I went ahead and finished it, after I had to cut another piece of the blanket because after ripping it apart it was so stretched. The stitching looks kinda like crap cause the fuzzy blanket was so hard to control, but I did go with the neon green, I ran two lines corner to corner to help prevent that side from stretching, but I must say it is very soft on the face, kinda thick though with that denim..

I  can relate to the old hankies that have turned soft and good enough to wipe galsses with

Price is relative for people, but the Foxhanks really hit me as a bit high, especially since I saw your posts here and they look the same :)

Thanks for the offer of links but we do have good enough hanky stores in the country (although not as artistic as your collection)  :tu:

Well I guess these are the lucky hankies, cause these are the ones I was working on today, I made these along with ones for the kid that were the same as one of these and the dinosaur one I posted a while back. So with the material that I have I've made all my combos so the Mrs is after me to now make and sell with what I have left, I'm like idk, I'm not that good? What do you guys think?

Well with mine the folding part is easy, since there smaller you just fold them once vertical, then once horizontal, and well there you have it, perfect size..
As for how do you use it, maybe just which side you don't like the most?

Show content
How many times do I use it before taking out a new one?

Well with mine the folding part is easy, since there smaller you just fold them once vertical, then once horizontal, and well there you have it, perfect size..
As for how do you use it, maybe just which side you don't like the most?
JR

Well, ok... but that's only half the questions!

Lol, better then all

I might try to go old school one of these days. If so, I'll post some pics.

Recently found some handkerchiefs in a drawer. Some slightly used, some still unopened. I haven't carry one in ages, but this thread has got me thinking about trying to carry them...

It's really not difficult, you just put one in your pocket. No need to overthink it  :pok: ;)

Oh yeah?!...

I don't blow my nose on my hank. These two layers of material hanks are useless for nose use. Way too thick. Not absorbent enough, etc. A 'real' hank that was carried by our grandfathers or fathers for nose use is a far thinner and softer material and certainly not two ply.

I was refering to that kind. The ones that were meant to be used, not only for show.

Agreed, there very thick and stiff, need a few runs through the washer, but still a little thick compared to that paperweight white nose digger our elders used, I would think these are more for show, or when that white one or napkin is folded just hide it? Right now I have two hankies in my pocket, one of the first I made and one of those thin white one(work great for my glasses) but come winter when the nose will need assistance I'll have napkins not only in my jacket, but also in a pants pocket, and I think hiding it folded in one of these will be interesting?
I started making them cause I thought they looked cool, kinda easy if you know how to use a sewing machine, just cleared the head from problems while doing so, and something to kinda collect, yet my wife wants me to start finishing the leftovers and sell them to make a few $$ like all these others are doing online.. I'm still like

Put the ones that are the most well made and see how it goes.  It doesnt cost anything but time to post.  If they sell great, if not you are only out the time spent posting them for sale. Go for it  :tu:

Was at Wally World today and we were in the pet section and I asked the Mrs if we could go over to the sewing section, I just wanted to see if there was anything interesting, and well I ended up getting a marvel package, and she chose both superman and batman with a plain matching backside, so I guess I ended up getting a liiiittle more then I expected.. heck even the cat got a little more as he's going nutty with a new toy(yes has catnip) lol

All cut to size, time to stretch the back, anyone ever use one of those pizza wheel cutters that are made for fabric? They look so easy to use rather then drawing lines and using scissors..  but here they are, of course one odd ball..

Dang, I guess it’s been a while since I did anything on here, huh

Anyway, I found some fabric and finally got a few min to unwind, and did these three, ones for the kid, the Spider-Man obviously, then the next is going to be my edc, cause well, it’s got my two, Wolverine and ironman,(that and I’m tired of the one I’ve been carrying ever since I started) and lastly I made a bigger one, normally these are around 9x9, because I get what’s called a fat quarter and well there small(around 18”), and I wanted to get four out of it, but I got a larger piece this time and I made a 12x12, in order to fit everyone in,

Back to regularly carrying a bandana and kerchief.  Kerchief goes in shirt pocket while bandana into back pocket.  I like my kerchiefs simple yet with some color.  I carried white but, well, you know.  I only carry 100% cotton for both items.
