OK, time for some honesty folks; who here hasn't owned a PST? I've been around multitools long enough that I remember when they were still being sold new but I realise that obviously isn't true for everyone. :D
Personally I'd recommend trying one if you haven't but perhaps you have reasons why you don't feel the need.
-
Never owned a PST, but I have a PSTII which is a handy little piece of MT :like:

Close enough I'd say. :D I wasn't a fan of the combo edge blade so swapped it out for a plain one but other than that I think it is an excellent MT.

I have never owned a PST but primarily because I just haven't gotten around to picking one up :dunno:

I would like to have a PE blade as well, but the combo edge does a decent job :tu:

I’ve never owned one, just got into the wonderful world of multi tools a couple of years ago... but I can’t have just 4 or 10 of anything I like so there may be one in my future haha.
Thanks

I think the later pattern tools are a big improvement over the early ones IMO. If you ever do get round to it I think you'll be surprised by just how compact, and capable, it is.
-
I chose poorly.
In the late 90s I had the options of a PST, a PST2 and a Supertool. I chose the Supertool, thinking that bigger is better.
I'd have been happy with either of the PST options... Since I've handled both.
I lent the Supertool to someone and he handed it back to me in completely broken condition. I just moved on with life at that time... Since I had other tools.
Before the warranty ran out I got it replaced and promptly sold it. It was before I was on MTo, and now I wish I had passed it on to one of you lovely people.

I made exactly the same choice back in the day. Supertool over PST. In fairness I carried that Supertool for years and don't regret choosing it. I only came back to the PST in later years and didn't appreciate it at first.
-
:raises hand:
Never owned one, never even handled one. Will I now he stripped of my MTO stripes? :ahhh
I got into multitools somw 15 yeara ago, and have been carrying SAKs for almost 30 years, well real ones 27 years, but except for the historical aspect if the PST, I simply never felt the appeal of it.
-
I bought one new in box from a store when they first came out. Loved it.
But other newer models caught my eye and I gave mine away....... :pommel:
After trying numerous other multitools, I've decided that the PST is tied with the Vic Spirit X as my favorite multitool. There is something wonderful about the simple, straightforward, compact, and useful PST that is hard to beat.
I've got a couple used ones on hand now. Love 'em.
-
The great thing is that you can pick one up fairly cheap nowadays. I have a few. In many ways, the original multitool is still the best :tu:
-
:iagree: It was my first full sized MT and I still love how compact they are and the tool complement is still very good :tu: I do like the PST II tool set just a bit better ( I have also replaced my user PST II combo blade with a plain edge PST blade ;) ) but the same form factor is still there :tu:
All of you need to get a PST :poke: :D

G'Day,
I was very late to the PST party. I got the PST II as I preferred the scissors and the diamond file. I hated the blade!!! Then I got my first PST to swap the blades across. The PST went to an 'ol mate as he had no MT. Years went by and I slowly got more PST II's. I needed to get PST's to swap the blades across and as part of a batch there was a good condition BO PST in. It needed some attention: the eyeglass driver was bent as a small bit was broken off the pliers. I straightened the eyeglass driver and filed the pliers equal. The shape is now similar to a SwissTool pliers. I carry if from time to time as I really like the BO feel. I also got a very early PST from an inmate here. It got a refresh with a good clean and sharpen. It is ready to do duty when needed. I don't carry it often though.
I think the PST and PST II tools are still some of the best ever produced. Yes they are old and hurt your hands if you use the pliers often, but apart from that they are great. The quality is excellent and they can be found at very good prices.
Cheers, Pete

I have never had an either. I grow up in a SAK family and discovered plier based tools when I was an adult and got a wave instead.
[It's not failure if you learn something from it]
-
I have a few.
The PST II is better in my opinion in regards to the toolset.
-
The PST was my first MT. I bought mine new around 1994 and carried it everyday for work for 20 years, never let me down. :salute:
Still have it and after a bit of Rehab it's still going strong. :tu: PST Rehab (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,76337.msg1654120.html#msg1654120)

Very rare to get one mainland Europe at a "normal" price.
They're usually selling from €60 and up if they even pop up locally.
Thankfully, Nix got me one some time ago :dd:
-
I don't have one yet. Back in the day I thought the mini tool was a good idea and got that instead.

I've also started with a Supertool back in '95.
Why? It has a woodsaw :dunno:
Although being on the heavy side I've carried it daily for a good time.
I've got a PST 2 years later.
I love it, it carries nicely in the 5th pocket of my jeans :tu:
Hmmm.... what about swapping the file for a woodsaw?

Oddly I was thinking exactly the same thing earlier today. I put a saw (and scissors) into my Kick and it's an excellent compact MT.

I got my first PST back in '87 (Army issue) That went missing on "deniable ops"  Never to be replaced.
I then got a Mini in '88 that was "lifted" by some ne'er do well
The PST was replaced (with a JPST) courtesy of Aloha and the Mini by way of Sos24 ( :hatsoff: )

Here is my modded PST, that I put together a few years ago
Turned one of the flat drivers into a tiny wood chisel :tu:
Shortened the awl just a little bit to clear the plier head
(https://i.imgur.com/RAgWFzih.jpg)
Took a PST blade that already had a broken tip, shortened it and made a wharncliffe blade out of it  that is how I got 2 regular long tools (saw and diamond file) and kept a blade :tu:
And lastly, I grinded a SOG (Harley Davidson branded) saw to fit on the pivot end and then slimmed it down some to fit in the handle better (the step of slimming it down was unnecessary because it would have fit fine before slimming it down but I didn't realize that before grinding it  )
Happy with the overall and this tool is very capable on its own :tu: :like:

It is the compact form factor combined with a very capable toolset that make it such a great tool :salute: it may look outdated but the design is very solid and functions very well for what it is :tu:
Think old car vs new car. If you have an old car that is still in great shape and it performs as it should then why not drive it :D New cars might be fancier and may even perform better but that doesn't mean that there isn't still room for an older car ;) many people buy old cars just for the nostalgia as well (I don't care for old cars personally but can see why others like them  )
Same with the PST :tu:
-
:iagree: except I like old cars  Actually, for me I still remember the excitement of my Dad over the PST. We wound up getting him an RB Winters version back in 1983. He carried it until 2004 when he gave it to me. I lost it shortly thereafter  It's partially nostalgia, and I think the build quality is a good bit better than a lot of newer models.
I think I'm going to go get mine :D

Even though I don't own one - it's small, has a well-thought-out toolset, and the form factor is nice and simple.... The form factor might seem outdated (since you have to open the tools to get at them) but I there's something about it that I prefer. It's not flashy.
I carry a Micra instead of a Style for the same reason.

The interesting thing about my multitool journey is that I thought I knew better...now...having had nearly every multitool pass through my hands at least once...all I can say is that the PST was the perfect tool on the first try. By the numbers...the PST and PST 2 have the highest tool density that has ever existed... quantitative proof there is something behind the magic of the PST.
-

Like so many tools/people over the years. The right tool/person, in the right place, at the right time.
None are better, just different :dunno:
I have had a number of LM tools over the years, some lost  some given away ::) and some stolen
I may not have used my (J) PST much since getting it, via a very decent member here :salute: :tu: but it represents where my journey started. There were SAKs prior to this but long before this forum existed.
I'll treasure my PST and use it for the upcoming challenge but, it's mostly just about where it all started :multi: :drink: :salute: :tu:

Never had (or even touched) a PST.
Pretty rare here. When one apear the price is something between 200 and 100 USD.
But in my opinion, is a really beautifull multitool.

Thanks to the generosity of SteveC my 09/98 dated PST arrived, cleaned and oiled, and looking almost new. It has a curious logo on it that has the word firey under a lightning bolt on one side of a dotted line and a large X on the other side of the dotted line. I'm interested in finding out about the company if anybody knows anything. They surely couldn't be bad if they were handing out Leatherman tools. :D Thank you again to Steve! :hatsoff:

I am with you. While the PST may be the OG multitool the Wave to me is the ultimate and most innovative. To me Leatherman tools are BW and AW (Before Wave and After Wave).

Very true. I will say if it wasn't for the Wave I would be right there with you PST guys. I don't care for the Skeletools, Free series, Signal, etc. The Surge is too gigantic. I have a lot of respect for the PST and if it wasn't for the PST the Wave wouldn't exist.

Sometimes simple is better and the PST feels like it's about half the weight of the Wave too. You know how NASA spent millions on a pressurized pen that would write in space while the Soviets just used a pencil. That's what it reminds me of. Simple and fully capable.
-
That is the beauty of a PST, simple, elegant but very functional :salute: The Rebar almost gets that same level but just doesn't have as small of a form factor nor the nostalgic feel :salute:
-
I haven’t had the pleasure of owning a PST, but, for awhile I did carry my late father’s SOG tool that was similar to it. That tool will deservedly be going to my eldest brother.
I also recently bought a couple of my own SOG tools, a PowerLock (far bigger than my Dad’s old tool), and a PowerAccess Assist (a poor man’s equivalent to the Leatherman Charge+), to have something different. I also LOVE my Leatherman Rebar as it builds upon the PST style.
I’d love to see a Rebar 2.0, that was slightly thicker and had tools like scissors, and few more. It just has a nice, comfortable form factor that doesn’t sacrifice too much in terms of usability.
One advantage that most multitools with inside tools have, is they are protected if and or when the tool is dropped. This is one thing I like about both the PST, Rebar and similarly designed tools. If you drop the tool with all tools closed up, the likelihood of any of them being damaged is low.

None, get rid of the spacer and bobs your uncle. You do have to lose the lanyard ring. you may have to thin the can opener a bit. It was a long time ago that I did the mod.
-
I believe all I did was rearrange the tools some, take out a washer or 2 and lose the lanyard ring  I went by what Steve and a few others had already done :tu:

I’m strongly considering getting a second Rebar, but also getting what’s needed to modify it to have the one tool I want; scissors. I’m contemplating one of the Coyote and Black units, with custom artwork of a Coyote on the tool. I’m coming up on the five year anniversary of my father’s passing. However, I’ve already picked up a SOG PowerLock I’m slowly modifying as he carried a small SOG tool with him every day to work.
What I’d really like, is an emerald green Cerakoted Rebar, with stonewashed or satin finished tools. I know to get that, I’d likely have to have it custom made, or do it myself. While not as convenient, I may just carry my Free T4 when I sport my Rebar.
Which scissors work or fit in the Rebar?

Here's what I did some years ago :salute:
You've got to be careful not to overload the handle. The locking rocker pins need to fully test within the respective holes in the handles. Or they might slip out our wear down to easy.

That's Strange
... just kidding. May I ask if it's for a specific reason? I can understand that one might not like the used look it gets (wearmarks), same for the patina on some tools/knifes with brass bolsters or CV steel.

I don’t care for the “cleanup” I have to do on a brand new tool. When I get a new multitool, I optimally want to be able to use it right away.

Most of the new tools don't require a clean up, just a little bit of a wipe down unless you don't care to have black on your hands with use for a while  not much different than spraying a new tool down with some type of oil and wiping it down before initial use

If I can get one in good shape, and customize the tool loadout a bit, I%u2019m getting one. It%u2019d be nice to have a %u201Cicon%u201D in my collection.

I prefer the toolset of the PST II a bit more because of the scissors and diamond file bit the plain edge blade of the PST is better to me :salute: might try and pick both up and swap some tools out like that :tu:

I would prefer to wipe down the tool, than to get it all over my hands in use.

I don’t care for the “cleanup” I have to do on a brand new tool. When I get a new multitool, I optimally want to be able to use it right away.

I see what you mean :hatsoff:
I kind of enjoy it though. I do wipe all new MT's off with a microfiber cloth, and BO ones with some Ballistol oil before that.

I do something similar with my BO tools, too. I have a honing oil I rub in wherever I can, and then a pivot oil for any hinges and joints.

Thanks :). I believe I will. I have always wanted one. Though lacking in some ways when compared to newer designs, the PST is what immediately comes to my mind when thinking about MTs.

Sorry that I missed this. Yes, I now have it. It needs some cleaning, which I will do when I can regain access to my shed (full of other people's stuff at the moment). Then I plan to carry it some.

Um....what's a PST, and how would I know if the Leatherman I bought around 1998 was one or not? At that time I thought there was only one kind of Leatherman tool, and I just went to the store and bought one. I didn't know there were different kinds back then. I broke it within a year or so, snapped the plier jaw off trying to use it like Snap-on pliers.....

The PST is the original Leatherman! https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic=63999.0
And yes, it was the only type of Leatherman at one time.

Ah. Then even I have owned one. I guess. Pretty sure it was the standard variety one, but I think back now and it must have been 1998 or 99 I bought it.

Looks like there were a few models in production by 1999: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,4416.0.html

Ah ok. It's possible mine may have been a PST2.

Ah ok. It's possible mine may have been a PST2.
The easiest way to distinguish between them is PSTII 's had scissors and a partially serrated knife blade, regular PSTs didn't have scissors and had a plain blade.

Ah....I don't remember any scissors, so it was probably a PST normal.

Never owned a PST but have been gifted several cheap PST clones,The sort you see at petrol stations for a few pounds. I keep them for a while being a gift before they eventually end up in the recycling bin.

Wanted one as a kid, but not picked one up yet. These sorts of things don't tend to come up much cheap second hand in the UK though :dunno:

The PST and PST II are all totally worth tracking down and trying :salute: They aren't the most comfortable pliers compared to some of the tools out today but they are very compact and the tool ratio is very high for its weight :dd:

Also the PST II had an awesome diamond file

Today is my MTO Anniversary. I joined in 2013 and to celebrate I am giving one of you fine members a PST in the original leather sheath.
Here are the rules.
1. I chose your name from reading this thread and you sharing you've never had a PST or PST2 before.
2. If you have a PST or PST2 coming or have either now or ever had either then please remove your name. This GAW is for PST newbies. The PST2 is close enough so I omitted y'all.
3. Your country allows such a tool.
4. You still want to try a PST for the first time.
5. You plan to carry/use this tool not keep it for collection purposes.
Etcetera, and so on.......
I am sorry I didn't add names of those from this thread who stated they were not interested in a PST. I also didn't add your name if you've had a PST 2 since it's close enough. If I missed someone who stated they didn't have either a PST or PST2 sorry. Let me know and point me to where you stated that and are interested. My goal is to get a PST into the hands of those who have been interested in owning a PST to use and just haven't got around to getting one or its hard to come by in your area. If you are looking for a MINT or NEW tool for the collection then please remove your name. I will be sending a user to the winner so you can see what all the fuss is about.
Once every one on the list responds in this thread stating they meet the rules then I'll ask Gareth ( pretty please ) who started this thread to pick a winner by random number generator. If Gareth cannot then I'll sign someone else :D.

i will admit,i wasn't into Leatherman at the beginning,my first was a bucktool,in 96 or so.
when the wave was introduced,i was infatuated, and got 1 from my dad in 99 [i gave him the Buck, which he still has].
i got a Surge in 06 or 07,and an ST not long after.
i only started "collecting" in 2018,when i got a PST in a trade.
i felt like kicking myself for waiting so long. i dig that model, and will get more [i got a sideclip in 2019,and a beat up PST 2 a few months ago].
i almost did not have a PST,and let me tell you,it was pretty close. :D

That's awesome GAW! And congrats on the anniversary!
I meet the rules and would love to try on out. Thanks!

Yep, just toys or nick-knacks.
Considering the condition of some of my knives, NICK-knacks.
Long ago I realized that buying real tools for my young kids was cheaper than buying toy tools..... Who wants to pay $30 for a set of plastic tools, when you can come up with a cheap set of real tools at the dollar store for less? ::)

Nice GAW Aloha
Nix and I have been talking about the PST recently as I've never owned one. (don't think I've even seen one in the flesh).
I think the lack of woodsaw plus the (minor) discomfort of the handle design would put me off using it setting as I have a Spirit, Wave and MP400 at hand.
Good luck to the winner and once again, nice one Aloha for your generosity in this and all the other GAW's you're currently running
-
Real tools for kids is something that should be done :salute: I had a real hammer and the Handy Andy tools I had when I was a kid were all fairly real tools as well :o I still have the little metal handsaw and the hammer that came with it :salute: My parents watched me and made sure I didn't hurt myself but once they were sure I wouldn't then off to the back yard to play with them :D
Well, they're not tools if they aren't used. ;)
I use a lot of them but you can't use them all  I am a collector as well because I like the engineering behind Mts in general but some aren't as practical to carry, so they don't get used  I rarely sell stuff like that because I am.very certain when I purchase it that I will either use it or just have it to keep :tu:
-

Yep, so far.... (of course, I didn't say what age I gave what tools to them).... None of them have their own guns so far....

Ah yes, I had a Handy Andy set when I was a kid, too. Got it used at a yardsale, I believe. My parents were big on yard saling. We called it "going yard sailing" as in sailing through other people's yards, to see what we could harvest from the sea of used merchandise.....

Interesting, your anniversary date on here is the same as my daughter's birthday. She's a wee bit older than your MTO age though.
I've never owned a PST/PST2 so it would seem I qualify and if so, may I please be considered.

I may have missed your post in this thread? I pulled only those who posted in this thread stating they have never owned a PST.

What are you going to first use the PST for?
1. Verify what all the fuss is about and if it would knock my Wave to the side, and if it does, reconsider my opinion about the mini.
2. Have an MT I could discreetly keep at work. I can’t really carry on the job, so I usually leave my tools at home, but if I could leave in the office to use when needed I imagine. The PST seems more, let’s say, people-friendly than the wave with its OHO blades, at least on this side of the pond.
3. Start a collection. :D

Massive shout-out to gregozedobe! :salute: :salute: :salute:
In true MTO (and ANZAC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anzac_spirit)) spirit he offered to send me a Pocket Survival Tool as I have not owned, handled or even seen one (in person).
It arrived accompanied by some keychain lights a week ago. Conditions here have only recently been conducive to taking half-decent photos.
It is dated 0694. As primitive as this PST seems I keep needing to remind myself that this was made 11 years into production.
I am familiar with the style and construction as I possess a Super Tool (and a half ;)).
My initial thoughts: Wow! It's smaller and much slimmer than I was expecting.
However, it has a lot of functions for it's diminutive size. I like how it is self-contained and no extra bits or blades are required to be carried with it (handy as they may be). I may consider adding a pocket clip as it almost seems too small to bother with sheath-carrying it.
I like how simple it is and how few parts there are compared to later multitools with a similar number of implements. It folds neatly away and snaps together with little fuss. The smaller tools tend to clump together as they are unfolded and can be a bit hard on the fingers if you have short nails as I currently do.
I am not a heavy user but I have used the pliers and screwdrivers so far. I can see how the handles could be uncomfortable on the hands if using the pliers a lot. I look forward to trying the file and wire cutters.

Thanks again Greg!

Well done Greg.
Great shots and thoughts Syncop8r. The super slim form and feature dense nature is exactly why I think the PST still has a place in the modern MT user's pocket. :tu:

Ok, I did a lot of reading on PSTs (mostly here), then I picked a good candidate from eBay and purchased it. It looks legit and in great shape. I'll post a pic when it arrives.

OK, just got my PST II from Aloha’s GAW. He went the extra mile, having to send two separate tools in all because of the mystery of postal magics. Kudos to your generosity Aloha !
First thoughts after carrying it for less than a day :
• I know it has been said again and again, but boy is it SLIM and LIGHT ! Up until now, my most used was the Wave, and my most carried, a Juice S2. The PST feels as big as the wave but weighs about the same as a Juice. And in the pocket, maybe even better than the juice, that now feels kinda clunky (never thought I’d say that !). Closed, its the best MT I’ve ever handled, rounded and soft edges. I don’t carry big blades, but it the same footprint as a spyderco PM2 in the pocket, and packs much more.
• Better ruler than the Wave, however the construction gives the best place to inches (not very useful anywhere in the known universe outside of the US), but I guess the nice folks in Portland have the right to a little misguided preference. They’ve earned it. :D
• Of course, once opened to the pliers, I’ll surprise no one by saying it is much rougher than any other MT, that’s where the wave beats it hands up. But probably not a problem, unless working for a long period of time, which is not my everyday use.
• Tool wise, I like the options. The scissors are really great ! They beat the wave by far. 4 drivers (like the juice) works well, I know from experience, even though we don’t use flat heads that much around here. But a full 3D Phillips, and I’m really happy. Probably my most used tool in the bunch. Is the can opener a combo tool that also opens beers ? I hardly ever use either, but I guess they are good to have.
• I don’t really like combo blades in general, and this one is 1/4th PE, 3/4 SE, I would have liked the other way around. However, it is not locking, which is necessary here in France.
• The file is probably one of the best I’ve seen, still have to use it before being sure of course. Fun fact I found out (years after everyone, I guess), but you can take the blade and file out without having to open the pliers, the good part of the unevenness of the tool construction I was complaining about when looking at the ruler. :face palm:
All in awl (which is missing, but could the smallest screwdriver serve as one ?), I really love it. Time will tell if it will replace my beloved S2 for city EDC. I’ll keep the wave for outside activities for the saw.
It has gotten me to consider two tools I knew about from afar, but never understood as well as now that I have the PST : the Mini (good luck getting one of THOSE though) and the ("PST III") Bond. Not that I need any of them now that I have the PST II, just that I understand their DNA/use a bit better.
Again thanks for the GAW !
Sorry, no pics yet, as my camera is broken. :ahhh

Thank you for following up. It has been a heck of a journey. I hope you have many years of enjoying the wonderful PST2.

Ok, I did a lot of reading on PSTs (mostly here), then I picked a good candidate from eBay and purchased it. It looks legit and in great shape. I'll post a pic when it arrives.
Wow, I wrote this just a little over 2 months ago, and now I have 3 PSTs :o

Great write-up French! Very glad you like it after what sounds quite a journey.
PST II is a great urban multi. :multi:
(Yes, the can opener will also work on bottle tops)

They'll multiply :like:
Its really fun to get the big letter and BO ones. I went down the rabbit hole with Japanese PSTs, big letter, and finally my most prized possession a hollow rivet. Its a helluva journey thats for sure.

Assuming you define "need" the same as I do, yes. :)

By the way, your pics are really great. Forgot to mention that. They were quite the (nice) torture during the couple month’s wait between winning the GAW and actually receiving it. :mail:

Oops, forgot to mention the sheath, which is nice, I like old school. Rides a bit higher than I’m used to, but I’ll easily get used to that.
Don’t know if I’ll carry it on the belt or in the pocket. I’ll be sure to tell you.

Awesome thoughts, French :salute: :tu: :like:
Glad you :like: it so much :woohoo:

Yeah, come on Rich :pok: :D
So; who hasn't owned a Pulse?

Another one of those "need tools" I have a couple and I feel that others should enjoy the Pulse as well :dd: :D
Oh and :pok:

Doh! I guess I forgot
Top: Late 80s PST. It's the first one I purchased (the one I mentioned buying in this thread).
Middle: Early to Mid 80s PST. One of you evil tempters posted a pic of a PST with "Pocket Survival Tool" stamped on the side, so I just had to buy one.
Bottom: Feb 2000 PST. My first two were too precious to use, so I bought this one to carry around and use. I might stick a Nite Ize pocket clip on it. :tu:

I can understand that.
I'm searching for a suitable pocket clip too... I want one that matches the PST's shape.

What you chaps need is a Sideclip. 8)

3 great choices for a good representation of the PST :salute: :like:
What evil tempters ??? I don't see any of those here

Sideclip YES :tu:. Glad I could help spread the love.

Just to mention I love the PST2 so much I even got in the November PST challenge, even though I positively hate taking pictures, more so on an everyday basis.
I've been carrying it since it got out of the package, and it doesn't seem much of a challenge to have to carry it for a month. More like a privilege.
Just slip it in the pocket and voilà !

One thing I like about the PST is how neatly the tools nestle together with the pliers:

Or incredible size for so much tool…

I may have owned a PST at one time; my memory gets a little foggy. Given enough time, I'll have (another) one.
