Right as most off you know I'm a treehugger, so I thought it might be a bit off fun (not to mention cheaper :D) if we all made some off our own camping gear out of re-used or recycled junk :)
There are lot's of links and tutorials in this thread... http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,4200.0.html , I'm planning on making my own alcohol stove, plus a few other bit's and bob's too (ie tent pegs)
As an incentive we'll make it a competition, the best entry wins my old, but hardly used Gerber Lst...
Not much...But hey I'm skint ok :D
The only rule is you've got to make them using your MT/Saks, and preferably have some picture/video evidence too :)
Still bring the rest of your camping gear as back up though :D
So what do you guys say ???
-
Interesting.... time for some scrounging of materials me thinks  I'll see what i can come up with :)

Good man, just don't make it too good as my effort's will not be pretty :D
So you want me to purposely scuttle my attempts so yours look good....this is gonna cost you....how about a Gerber LST :D :D

Nice try, but I'm hardly gona enter my own competition, unlesswe made it a sweep stake hmm

Your comp your rules mate :)
I've already made one tent peg, only need one or two more to hold a tent down....right  :D

Excellent idea! :D

Right I'm thinking of polishing up the bottom of a can of coke, do you reckon I could use it as a parabolic mirror ???

Using chocolate? Seen it done on websites and it works pretty good :)

Might be worth us both keeping 999 on speed dial for the next few weeks then :D

LMAO :D. Might be a good idea that :D

Here's a good link on the geometry of tarp shelters. Should have some ideas.
http://www.bushwalking.org.au/FAQ/tarp/TarpShel.htm
Don't know what the rules are in UK campgrounds. Sometimes here you can't tie off with trees in which case you have to make your own poles. You can use anything for a tarp from painters drop cloth plastic to more expensive nylon ones.
-
Right I'm thinking of polishing up the bottom of a can of coke, do you reckon I could use it as a parabolic mirror ???
Actually that is a fire starting technique and well documented. I have tried it. Typically they say to use a chocolate bar for the polishing compound but I found toothpaste works better. It is a bit tricky but you can start a fire with it.

Dudes,
I shall be bringing my coke can stove...be prepared for the competition is mine >:D

Looking forward to seeing it! :) and watching it pale in comparison to my contraption!

So how will you start your stove fires? You know how I "lust" after the Brunner Feuerschlagmesser. First I have seen of a modern knife with a traditional fire steel.

If I can get the mirror tecknique to work then that way, if not it'll be the ferro rod way :)

After consulting with my attorney I was instructed to make a disclaimer that all I did was make a suggestion and assume no liability to person or property. >:D
Remember now. There can be only one!
-
Oh dear :o I think I may loose this one big style . Is there a booby prize ? The last time I went camping was 18 years ago so it could be fun to watch the pigs ear I make of it .I'm going to bring this gas stove contraption thats for sale in my local shop , some tins of food and a shed load of home made chilli . I'm just going to be happy if I can warm it up ::) I am though looking very forward to seeing your inventions :D I'm surprised no ones said anything about setting snares and gutting rabbits with a Vic classic . Mike It sounds like you have some great skills you could show us .

-
I dunno about that, my skills really only consist of talking, shouting, getting into trouble, and making a prat of myself :D
BTW Meths does work in a Zippo, BUT, you can't see the flame :o (why did I forget that ::)) made a cool roaring sound though >:D

We’re from North California and south Alabam
And little towns all around this land
And we can skin a buck; we can run a trot-line
And a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive

Well I grew up in South Alabama
Unfortunately I work in a cubicle these days. this stuff does work though. You want to practice with stuff before you take it out.

Yeah that put the purple crap in to stop students drinking it ::) (true btw)
Trouble is purple meths never burns as cleanly as the neat stuff :(

Well I'm quite happy to watch them strugle, and maybe douse the flame when they set themselves on fire :D
To tell the truth I've got visions of this happening :D

Something else that works don't know if you have it over there. It's a product called HEET. It's an automotive product additive used to clear out gaslines. It works great in an alcohol stove.
-

We've got similar products over here, but meths are a LOT cheaper ;)
-
Yeah HEET's not cheap but it does work. You see why I did my legal disclaimer :D.
Another safety thing is remember when you are cutting cans and stuff it leaves real sharp edges. It's also good to deburr the cut metal with a file or sandpaper or something. Of course when I tried putting my homemade alcohol burner in my hobo stove till I changed the venelation hole configuration some it did turn the hobo stove into a vapor chamber. Instead of the flame jets coming off the alcohol burner they would vaporize in the coffecan stove and make a slightly bigger fire, lol. That was a little hairy till I made some slight modifications. Remember how an alcohol burner works is that once the fire starts it heats the alcohol in the container vaporizing it and setting up a vaporizing cycle. Hence you get the nice forced jets of flame from the burner. Alcohol burners are sort of self-pressurizing.
-
Thats part of the reason I love alcohol burner's, there just so simple and effective, no pumps, no controls, just fill, light and cook with :)
-
Yes once it's built it basically runs itself. White gas fuel stoves have to be pumped etc. I do have a Svea 123 that self primes. Of course you can't get much simpler than a woodburning hobo stove.
-

There used to be a really good stove forum, but since the last time my computer crashed I can't find a link to it :(
-
I think i may go for a hobo style stove, to give us a bit of variation. I'll see what i can get my hands on material wise first though :)
-
The reason I mentioned the vapor pressure is that the hole size is critical. If they are too big you won't get the pressure. When I made them I used a drill bit but a SAK awl should do the trick. The only thing that probably can't be done with stoves with a SAK or multitool is cutting the heavier metal of a coffee can for a hobo stove. I used tin snips. You might have to make a couple of alcohol burners before you get it right but once you do you'll never have to buy a stove. I used a design where I put a jute string wick down a center hole to act as a wick which initially builds the heat for pressure.
-

I kinda dismissed the Hobo style coz I'm not sure we'll be aloud an osmurfh flame

Theres a very good chance that we may not be allowed any open fires . While this is a great discussion we may be getting a little too carried away , after all we dont want to bring too much attention to two or three tents full of sharp pointy things do we ;) I also dont think too many blades should be on show in the open air , fair enough if we are using them to open cans etc. but theres a good chance alot of people will be there with kids running around and we really dont want too much attention .I dont fancy having my little lot confiscated by an over enthusiastic coper :police: :twak: ::)
Dunc
-
You make some good points dunc, but it shouldn't be in the school hols so kids shouldn't be too much of a problem and it is midweek too. They might have a BBQ area where we could test out a few stoves though?
-
You're supposed to contact the freakin place to see what their burn restrictions are. Then you'll know if you can use a hobo stove. Should be classified like a BBQ grill.
-
Your comp your rules mate :)
I've already made one tent peg, only need one or two more to hold a tent down....right  :D
Yeah that'll be enough :D, if it get too blowey, we'll just use Ben to hold the sides of the tent down :D
I may be light, but I'd be a great peg. :D

Zippo? ;)
Hello, greenie here :D
Actually, has anyone tried putting meths in a zippo?
In my last job we had buckets of meths and so I used it in my Zippo all the time. Used to stink though.

If you knuckleheads get your knives and tools confiscated at this meet, the rest of us promise not to tease you hardly at all about it. :D

I think if we get our tools conviscated (with 2 copper's present) there's be a coup shortly after >:D
-
So with the bank holiday almost behind us, anyone started there projects yet ???
-
If I'm honest... no. :D
-
Nope, had too much uni work to do, and that won't change till mid june really :( But i'm planning out a few ideas in my spare time ;)
-
Useless sod's >:(, me neither :D
In my defence, I have nabbed a couple of can's ready for building an alcohol burner :)
-
Just wait till my exams are over! I'll be scrounging and building like a madman......oh wait i'm already one of them :ahhh :D

-
What gave it away? :D :D :ahhh
Oh nothing specific... :D
-
Guys(mates) if you are concerned about hobo stoves it's pretty easy to contact the campground and find out what their burn restrictions are. Don't know how that works in the UK but it can also vary depending on fire danger so it's always a good thing to call ahead.
-
I'm gona send them an email next time I've got a day off :)
-
That's the way to do it. Often when camping places have burn rules they don't clearly define things like Zip stoves or hobo stoves. They can fit in a fuzzy area. For instance a BBQ grill can be allowed but not an open fire. So where does a hobo stove fit in that? Fire might be allowed but only in a designated fire put. Well you can use the stove in the pit. Burn regulations can vary at the same spot depending on fire danger. So sometimes you need to contact the authorities where you are going ahead of time and see there rules and discuss where what you are doing fits in.
-
How's everyone getting on with there projects ???
I've not even started mine yet :o
-
Not very well :( I'm so skint I'm borrowing a sleeping bag , stove and chair :D So in a way I'm recycling ;)
To be honest I was a bit worried about driving my car that far , she's done over 170'000 and she's petrol ( good old Germans ) , my wife was more worried so suggested hiring a car so that looks like what I'm going to do . Be even more skint know ::) Can someone bring a tin of baked beans and a slice of bread for me :D
I'm also trying to sort out little gifts for everyone , nothing much but its something to remind us of the day .I do have a rather fetching Victorinox shirt thats too small for me .

Like a big kite really - I've actually seen one of those cheap ones clear a hedge once. That was funny, the family that was underneath it were just looking up at the sky. It was hard not to laugh, although I felt their pain....

Wel you'll be joining us in the mad dash if ours makes a bid for freedom :D
-
I got myself a waterproof jacket and a pair of decent boots that I've been promising myself for a long time, so it'd better bloody rain now :D
I was going to get some waterproof leggings, but after the jacket and boots I only had enough cash left for a couple of slabs of Kendall Mintcake, so I'm going for the tried and tested "change of jeans" approach I think.
I am now officially skint, so anyone who was planning on flogging me their junk is gonna have to be very convincing :D

I was thinking that seeing as the weather has deserted us, that as plucky Brits (and sightly eccentric :D) we should bring our own summer with us :D#
So how about wearing your loudest hawaiian shirt that you own, just for a bit of fun :D

If you look in the nearest Yorkshire trading company you can get a decent pair of pants in there. And gaiter are great by the way.
