What year did the Vise Grip 5WR Toolbox make its appearance into the Multitpool world? :)
Question:Depends how you count them :P i am not counting West marine/paladin/other "branded" SOG produced tools.
How many SOG multi-tools models were/are discontinued?
Question:Depends how you count them :P i am not counting West marine/paladin/other "branded" SOG produced tools.
How many SOG multi-tools models were/are discontinued?
I count 8 (from memory ;) )
Toolclip
PowerPlier
CrossCut
CrossCut 2.0
CrossGrip
OG Switchplier
OG PowerLock
PowerDuo
The MicroToolclip was recently reintroduced, although one could argue that the first 2 generations were different enough to count.
While we wait for SlaughterMed to come up with a new question, here's another one:My guess would be Gerber...?
Who was the second company to jump into the multitool market after Leatherman?
Def
The first one I remember seeing was Gerber, but since it was already mentioned I will say.. SOG ??
Kershaw A-100?
Kershaw A-100?
Exactly ! :tu: The Kershaw A100 with it's groundbreaking design is considered the forerunner of two Leatherman Multitools, the Wave and also (being the first multitool to feature locking plier jaws) the Crunch.
Your turn Cody ! :salute:
Sorry Grant, been a busy couple days. Heres my question (careful, its a tricky one):
How many multitool manufacturers have developed replaceable wire cutters, and which manufacturers were they?
Three that I remember of. Gerber, SOG and Leatherman. Are there others? That would be it! for those that aren't aware, SOG produced a version of the BlackTip multitool for West Marine that had replaceable wirecutters. However, the wire cutter design was faulty, causing them to shatter prematurely. The tool was quickly recalled and pulled from the shelves, and remains an interesting little tidbit in multitool history.

I remember reading that years ago at the forum, but there are no pics of that Blacktip IIRC.
I couldn't find any picture back then, and nowadays it's the same. Remains an unseen mystery for me. Not from users, not from SOG, and West Marine didn't help there either.
Any help there, folks?

You can hold onto a nut or something with them partially in the closed position. It's a bit hard to explain but basically the handles don't fold close.

They are still making the Micra so it will surely pass the PST eventually.
The bonus question answer is "The intermediate axis of rotation theorem" or the "tennis racket theorem".

Here's a hint- there's a very special reason the bit holder on the end is detachable, and it has to do with another tool.

From their site, not that I knew the answer without researching it:
for use of the bits in conjunction with "the CRKT® Zilla-Tool Jr"

The design brief was for a shrunken down Zilla, and someone forgot to tell them to not factor down the bit driver by the same percentage as the rest of the tool. This ended up with a duff bit driver size which no bits fitted. The Getaway Driver was introduced so that standard bits could be used in the Zilla Jr - effectively an adaptor to make up for an earlier design cock-up.

5 basic versions of Plier head.
Roughly 3 finishes (SS, BO, Road/Tour finish)

NATO Version for the Australian military, and something to do with a corkscrew holder as well ?

Since no one else is having a shot at this here goes.

The Wenger SwissGrip has the longest knife blade I know off, it is just a smidget longer than the one of the Ranger line (although the Ranger line has the longer edge). I'm also fairly sure it has the longest saw in business.

Shears are shears not scissors, the one I'm thinking about it really are scissors and they are a mile bigger than the one on the Surge :DI think you mean the right tool.Wenger IronGrip?possibly the wenger ranger modelsRanger line have very long blade, there is however one that has the longer blade, measured from pivot to tip, or at least when I measure it :D.
I'm fairly sure the saw on my model is longer too ;).
As for the scissors, anyone got a measurement from hinge to tip on the Ranger scissors? I believe there is a model that has larger ones.
The Wenger SwissGrip has the longest knife blade I know off, it is just a smidget longer than the one of the Ranger line (although the Ranger line has the longer edge). I'm also fairly sure it has the longest saw in business.
You have a beginners question for us?
Anyone, care to take a stab at the largest scissors?
Bear and Sons produces shears on a few different models and they are pretty big :o could it be those you are talking about

That would be 1996. Also knife of the year by Blade Magazine. I was hoping some day I would have a question I knew the answer to! :D
Ooooh - that depends if you consider a Soft Touch 14 to be a standard Wenger
Buck has a large scissors on the X-Tract Essential. They measure 1 3/4" pivot to tip, 3" inches over all.I take your 44.5 or so mm and raise you a MT with 49mm from pivot to tip

Yeah, there is no clear separation... I think there is a largish grey area where they are both depending on your mood. For me shears are short and stubby with more triangular blades (although that does not hold up) either. 'Cause that would make the MP600 scissors into shears.I guesstimeasure* that these SHEARS measure about 54mm from pivot to tip, which would make them the longest if they were scissors :D.
Just so I know, what is your personal definition of the difference between "shears" and "scissors", 'cause it isn't very clear to me ?
I thought shears were heavier duty, designed for cutting thicker/harder materials (metal, wood etc), while scissors were more for thin/soft materials (paper, fabric, thin foil). The Wenger pictured above looks like it has what I would call scissors.
The Excalibur is what I would think of as shears:

99.9% sure there isn't a Dutch army variation with the 108mm, there are only 93mm and 111mm DAKs.
I'm very curious about the German Police versions you mention, anybody has one of these?

Was thinking of the larger Dutch knives, but double-checked and no 108mm Dutch knife. There is a 91mm Dutch military knife (Master Craftsman) with alox handles. (below)
Have heard from several sources about the black German police knife, but have never seen one. Doug Dillman of Freeport Knife (now Casco Bay cutlery) claims to have a grey version of the standard German military 108mm that was issued to the German navy. Don't know if it was a test run or what.
So my question was more specific to scale types of GAK 108mm knives, such as color and material, not shield variations. So far nobody has gotten all correct, but they have however informed me of a bunch of new scale variations that I didn't even know about. If they had both real and fake stag, then I think Ronald's post should be counted as correct. If not I'll give it to glen for the black scales. I was looking for red nylon, green nylon, stag, and then a darker shade of red nylon.

Is it the Case Fixxit (designed by Blackie Collins) ? These were also marketed by Zippo with promotional ads on the front cover, and there was a Shooters Tool version as well.

Sorry Steve, nice try, but on all Fixxit versions all the slide-out tools (bits and the knife blade) can be removed from the body by simply unscrewing the locating screws all the way out. I'm not aware that Case ever offered the components as spare parts.
All the tool components (bits) have the same format, but there are significant differences (not counting SS vs black finish).

This thread seems to have stalled a bit, so here is a helpful hint to get things moving again :
The bit drivers on the standard Fixxit were:
Med & Large(ish) Flat drivers,
Med & Large(ish) Philips Drivers.
The Shooters Tool had one Med flat driver, while the other three were all one (different) format driver (in 3 sizes).
What format are they ? (starts with H, has 3 letters unless you want to spell it out more fully, in which case you will need 7 or 9 )

How many current Leatherman Multitools come equipped with an awl ?
Alright this one is going to be kinda silly but.....Both the sog powerlock and ST300 have similar locking mechanisms...What are three differences between the two systems?

Great question :tu:
I don't have a Powerlock but looking at pics it seems.
The Powerlock's locking tab is held on by a separate pin and attaches to the outside of the tool with fold over tabs, The ST's pins are integrated as part of the tab and attaches via a hole in the frame. The Powerlock's tension spring is a separate piece riveted on and the spring on the Supertool is cut out of the frame.
Cool , that was a good question :tu:
I'll stick with my question of :
How many current Leatherman Multitools come equipped with an awl ?
And will add for bonus :
And what are they ?

Gonna say 8 :tu: The awl is used for either making holes in softer type materials (leather, wood, plastic etc. and or sewing heavy thick guage leather :tu:
So, not counting the brass scraper on the MUT? :D

Come on you guys. I spotted the error within 10 seconds.
The fact that it's a Hercules and not an Equestrian?
Yes Sir! :salute:
I guess that means I'm supposed to ask the next question. I'll stick to the SAK area and ask:
What Swedish knife company did Wenger make a collaborative series with?

Thanks for the explanation of the Charges, Grant  and for the pics of those great MTO Charges from back in the day :dd: :like:
The XTi and Ti were the original two, and the XTi was basically the ALX but in Titanium while the Ti was more like the AL. The XTi and Ti were discontinued so that Leatherman could expand the line with the aluminum versions (AL and ALX) and the new, higher priced TTi in titanium.
The SLV is like the AL except in grey anodised aluminum instead of the more standard black and was made exclusively for Costco.

These were manufactured in very limited quantities- 5 x green and 5 x blue. They also predate Texas Tool Crafter's customs by a few years. :D
But, I guess as they don't count as they weren't factory issue. :D

I guess I'd better ask a question then (and keeping with the precedent of a non-common brand, this'n is not made by LM, Gerber, Kershaw, Bear, Al Mar Buck, Schrade, Kutmaster, Vic or Wenger, nor is it a cheap knock-off of another brand). I also like the concept of starting with a sparse clue, then adding more clues if no-one guesses it. So here goes:
Clue 1: Flattish rectangular form.
Clue 2: No pliers or file.
What say you ?

Let's play MTO Trivia!
The rules are simple- I will ask a question of general multitool knowledge and the first person to answer it correctly gets to ask their question. Whoever answers that question correctly gets to ask the next question and so on. Should there be a dispute, it will be up to a moderator (or if it involves one or more mods, it will be up to me) to make the decision.
Given this crowd, we should end up with an excellent reference thread for new users! :D
