Great field pics Z Man!!!!!  I don't get to do much with mine. When we get into the Fall, I'm going to redouble my efforts to get out on the back 40 with mine. Can't do much in these damn 100+ degree days. :bnghd:
The great thing being that most of Robert's collection is still less expansive than just a single knife from some other manufacturers :tu:
Nice pics everyone! Thanks for starting the Mora club Gaute. I will have to get some pics of mine up for you guys.
I'd like to join pleas.

Nothing major, but got a call today so I'll be adding the Pro S to the collection, and I freely admit the only reason I want it is because I have the Pro C
Lol - cheers SG. It is just right for me. I've had it for over 10 years (I think ) and I can't fault it. My only other fixed blade is my MOD survival knife which I must take a pic of sometime - it's a beast.I'd like to join pleas.

I have some Moras -Bahco 2444 in orange and in Laplander colours, Fireknife, Companion, Pro C- (for which I partially blame this den of iniquity ::) ) and I love them all and I am lusting after a 510 and a Garberg (I partially blame this den of iniquity for that as well -but only a little).
What I don't use get's moved on eventually so I guess I'm satisfied by these knives :tu:

Thanks :) In reality each one represents a slighty different approach of the same concept and all work quite well for me.
I do think a 510 would be my most used one. Too bad they only come in carbon steel.

I'm in, but I only have 3
My first, I think it's a 511, that my father gave me when I was 15 (1985), the sheath has split so it spends its time in a drawer.

The modern 511

And finally the Companion Heavy Duty

Those are all great looking Smashie  Never would have know the top one was over 30 years old :o I have the HD Companion myself and like it very much :tu:
Very interesting. I'll have to look into it
Well put SG.
Mors Kochanski swears by them and Ray Mears championed them here in the UK. Very cheap, but take a fantastic edge and do everything you would expect from a decent knife, except, as SG says, for a fraction of the cost.

don't forget that they are very light and if the handle should fail, the ease of replacing ones is hard to match

They can take a lot of abuse too, but if you use them for their intended purpose they will outlast you.
Here's another one of mine, an older model Scout knife that I keep on my floatation vest for canoeing.

I think that sounds like the plan. From what I'm hearing in this you can either buy it with the retaining loop, neck cord and ferro rod, or you can buy it with just the sheath and, as far as I can see, you don't seem to get a belt loop at all.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ivs_HELxv8
I know what you mean, but at around 20secs he does call it "neck knife kit or pocket sized knife". I do understand that it could just be a language barrier though.
Wonder what kind of price point that will have  I like the idea of a pocket sized fixed blade but wonder if it will be practical ??? Either way :like:
Nice!!!!! :cheers::cheers:
Last one (I think) from me, though there is always the chance I'm forgetting one. :-[ Another older model is the Viking 660, but I've seen it still listed on a couple of sites.

I haven't seen it for sale in the UK yet although the best chance is probably a pre order with Heinnie Haynes.
A couple more from me, some slightly more speSmurfpillsed knives. A woodcarving 120 and a woodcarving 162 spoon knife.

Mora enthusiasts? Grathr's and Robert's passion have me looking for ways to learn Norwegian and counting the little yellow pennies to afford a few more Mora blades. The Norwegian is simply to be able to tell our northern members to jump in a barrel of porcupines next time this Mora frenzy starts. Well and to hit on northern women
Has to be the first time someone wants to learn Norwegian on cause of Mora knives... :D

Well from my understanding learning it will also help in communication with Danes, Swedes and Icelanders, kinda like Bosnians, Croats, Serbs and Slovenians can understand each other quite well. Plus it's easier to blame someone else or something else than just my insanity.
So where to start with your language?
Not a Mora but I was ready to learn Norwegian to find out about this one!

I was scrolling down the page and your photo flashed passed, I thought "is that a Scandinavian Tanto??" and scrolled back for a better look.....
(fortunately)Not a tanto, but a very desirable knife! :salute:
Some more really  nice knives :dd: I love the knives in general from the whole area over there I think :o

you're a pragmatist? you don't want to be labeled a dooms day prepper or have to answer uncomfortable questions because of a more dangerous looking knife?
I have some Moras -Bahco 2444 in orange and in Laplander colours, Fireknife, Companion, Pro C- (for which I partially blame this den of iniquity ::) ) and I love them all and I am lusting after a 510 and a Garberg (I partially blame this den of iniquity for that as well -but only a little).
What I don't use get's moved on eventually so I guess I'm satisfied by these knives :tu:
My camera being away, here's a couple of recycled pics
Some nice ones firiki
+1!!!!
Thanks :) In reality each one represents a slighty different approach of the same concept and all work quite well for me.
I do think a 510 would be my most used one. Too bad they only come in carbon steel.
Look for an old KJ Eriksson 545...it's Sandvik 12C27 SS!

Ferro rod? No, that's where I keep my emergency Red Vine. As you can see from the picture I had just had an emergency.I'd like to join please.Nice Mags! Love the sheath also. It even has a place for a ferro rod.

Of those in the pics I like the Bahco branded one best but I do like the look of all Moras in general ( must be the Scandi grind  ) I wouldn't mind having any of the ones you have pictured though ;) Before the years end I plan on adding at least 1 if not 2 to my collection
Does Mora mean "tenderize" in Swedish and Helle "to pour" in Norvegian?
Both names sound very nice in my language. They are both identical to ancient Greek words.
Mora (Μόρα) was the regiment of ancient Sparta. We still use the word as Moira (Μοίρα) which means a lesser military unit, the degree (as in the circle), or the fate. We also use the Nord term Mora, meaning the sleep paralysis.
Helle (Έλλη, written as ΗΕΛΛΗ before Koine) was a character in mythology, the girl that run away with the ram from which they made the golden fleece. The name is tied with Greece in many ways, since we call ourselves Hellenes and our country Hellas (Greeks were a tribe of the Northwest, the first Romans encountered, so they named all country Greece instead of Hellas. in a similar way, Ions were Hellenes of the East (Ionia), so Turks and many Asians call as Yunan). Hellen was the mythological patriarch of all Greeks.
I already named my new Helle Skala (Skala means ladder in modern Greek btw) Έλλη.

You forgot to mention that mora is the plural for baby ;)
Yup, the word moron is Greek, folks. It's the neutral gender of moros that means a foolish man (man, not person) :salute:

Morakniv Combo Knife & Firestarter Light My Fire Swedish FireKnife w/ Stainless Steel Fixed Blade $15 @ Amazon
Light My Fire Swedish FireKnife with 9.5 cm (3.75 Inch) Sandvik Stainless Steel Blade and Swedish FireSteel Fire Starter, just the black version for this price, but it matches all time low price, not sure if i'm allowed to post the link, but you can search it.
so i was playing around with just arrived fireknife striking the steel against the blade spine and it was not sparking, muttering to myself this thing sucks...
then I look at the picture on back of package and see your supposed to hold steel in place and move the knife and whammo, sparks flying everywhere, now I smell like the top of a bic lighter
and its razor sharp, very nice product  and if there's a cooler name then fireknife I would be shocked

Cool. I didn't know it had a name. My design is kinda rough, but the only tool required is a knife. It should last me until suspenders make a comeback.

+100!!!! Very cool!
Very nice mate. I'm very interested to hear what you think of it.
I have been playing with it all day and I like it a lot.
Its very comfortable to use and fits nicely in a jacket pocket. The handle is dual density. Softer outer layer, hard center (the area with the squares is hard)
The blade is small, but since its a fixed blade you can use every inch of it as hard as you like. Wich you have to, when taking down a sapling like in the pic below. It was hard work, half cutting and half prying it into submission.
The sheath really could use a belt loop or something for when you are not wearing a jacket though. I have an idea for a carbiner mount for it that I will try to make this evening.
Also I tried using it for breaking down some cartboard boxes. It worked, but not as well as my spydies or benchmade . The scandi grind really isnt the best for that kind of work.
and if the handle breaks you got an arrowhead at the ready ;)

I start working the handle shape by “flats”…it helps me keep blade alignment and symmetry.
The progression is roughed out square then hexagon. From this point it’s knocking off the corners, then knocking off those corners…think filing a square bar into a rod.

Got a new Mora :)
(Sorry for the dark pics)
I actually chopped through the tree in the pic with it. Its head is very light, so it was a lot of work.
I had a very brief try of one a good few years ago and, I'm sorry to say, I didn't really get along with it. However I'll be very happy to hear your your thoughts on it as it sees some proper use. :tu:

My Mora still needs some work and a sheath. She's sharp but it came it came to me pretty rough so I've got a little work yet to do.

Companion HD which I like because of the slightly bigger handle....
I have a Pro C which I believe has the same handle as the Robust, those are a bit small for my huge paws.
Anyway, cheap Mora - how can you go wrong?

I havent seen the Kansbol in the flesh, but I think the Kansbol has a squared spine, wich the 2000 doesnt. Other than that I dont know of other differences in the blade.
I would love to see a proper komparison though. :)
I caved. :-\

I had a look at that idea and I didn't find may 2000's for sale and most of them were orange. I don't mind a bit of colour on a Mora, but it wasn't what I was looking for this time.

Isn't the Kansbol a replacement for the 2000? Cause the marketing would make a lot more sense then
Oh man that is smurfing sweet! Nice Zed.

I'm really hoping my Kansbol turns up tomorrow. I'm away camping with my daughter's Scout group over the weekend and it'd be a good chance to put it through it's paces.
what are those off days you mention?
Oh and hope your knives give you tons of fun
Just got the Kansbol in today. First impressions are very positive. :tu:

Looks good Gareth, look forward to your thoughts on it :salute:
Cheers gents. I've tried it out with making feather-sticks and, not surprisingly, it perform admirably. :)
That blade profile is sure interesting, I take it it came in smurfty sharp?
Doesn't it also come with the multi-mount sheath?
Great knife you got the, brother :tu:

It came "Mora" sharp. After a quick strop it's as good as you could want it to be. Yes, the same multi-mount you can get with the Garberg can be had for the Kansbol as well.
The weekend camp went well enough, though a little less rain might have been good. ::) The Kansbol performed very well and didn't miss a beat. I do like the slight soft touch to the grip and the shape is very comfortable. No complaints about the sheath either. All-in-all I've got no reason for complaint. However, is it worth three or four times what you'd pay for a basic Mora? I'm not sure it is TBH, but it's certainly a good knife. Oh, the nice square spine is very well done.

Cheers mate. I was doing a little whittling with it last night (nothing specific, just removing wood) and it was a pleasure to use. Partly due to the slim profile at the tip, partly due to the extremely comfortable handle. I also did a little light battoning and it did OK. I'm not a fan of battoning huge lumps of wood anyway and reserve it for making small bits of kindling for fire starting.
Based on my experience with the Light My Fire Fireknife, I think I'd like me a Kansbol.
Still wonderin' about the Garberg.
Curse you, bunch of enablers :D

Well Mora did have a poll on Instagram if you'd rather have a Kansbol or a Bushcraft. I saw a lot of Kansbol replies, although I'd personally fall in the Bushcraft camp at this point

I've never even held a Bushcraft as far as I can recall. Any particular reason you like it?

Feels good in my hand and I'm used to the Companion so the blade profile and familiarity is there. Sadly I've never gotten a chance to hold a Kansbol or Garberg and for me ergos are the most important thing

Perfectly reasonable mate. I did get a chance to hold a Garberg in a shop and really liked the handle shape. When I found out the Kansbol had the same shape and also had a softer texture I was sold on the idea of owning one.

Guess I should get my hands on one to really decide. Although I've got another sort of knife on my list that has priority

I like the Garberg feel as well...comfortable and easy to grip, even with my RA. In fact, the Garberg has pretty much taken the wind outta my sails on buying more fixed blades. I'll get another one if it comes out in carbon (maybe) but it's great in stainless IMO....less worry/care in the field.

I do wonder why they didn't go with a softer grip on the Garberg. Durability perhaps? Not that I'd call the Kansbol handle weak or anything, but you might be able to damage it when battoning or some such.
amazing pic
So I gotta try out Mora knives... I really really love the fact I can blame you guys for that

I think for two reasons, a) the soft material can potentially hurt your skin during hard, prolonged use which is what the Garberg was designed to do and b) long-term that same material could detoriorate due to use and age.
Point b) is just a guess.
Went for a walk in the woods this lunchtime and took the Kansbol with me.

Cool pics!! Calendar thread, calendar thread, calendar... :pok:
That holder looks good :tu: How do you like the knife, Gareth?
:salute: I see why you'd like a finger hook and I agree with you. I guess it would ruin the knife's clean lines, though, and that many people might think it made the grip uncomfortable. Not to mention the need for an extra mold.
If you could keep only one of the two, would you pick the Eldris or the Kansbol? >:D :D

Oh, the Kasbol without question. The short blade on the Eldris makes it very handy, but if it were to be my one and only knife it'd be too limiting IMO. I don't want to sound like I'm being harsh on the Eldris becasue I really do think it works well. I have a couple of small bladed sheath knives and it's by far and away the best of them, mostly due to the good sized handle. It's a bit more compact than a full sized Mora, but it's big enough to fill the hand and is comfortable to use for extended periods.

Thanks guys! I did a couple of funny videos abouts unboxing and reviews.
I have a feeling that every child should be given a 510, 511 or 711 at birth (or no later than the 3 years of age) and maybe we'd actually have a society were knives are seen as tools and people actually know how to use 'em (short version of an hour long rant with a metric crapton of cussing because a friend broke the tip of a Tramontina kitchen knife trying to pry open a paint can and almost hit his girlfriend in the eye)I agree.

if the MTO crowd got to design a Mora, how would it look? (performance is always great on Mora knives so moot point)

I was thinking exactly the same thing, also a full tang like Garberg would be nice (No, I'm not biased at all... ) :pok:

OK, I could go with that, but I think it'd have to be a thinner blade than the Gerberg. Dare I suggest a slight drop point? Not a big one, just something mild like this:

I think for a Mora it just has to be a Scandi grind. I'm also thinking about blade length and width. I might be biased because of how much I like the Eldris, but I'm leaning towards a shorter than normal blade. Not Eldris short, but 1-2cm shorter than they normally make. Thoughts?
Sure! I am honored. This needs a bump. Morakniv rulez!

Yeah, I was thinking so too, but had to ask since Garberg doesn't have true Scandi grind, i has a secondary bevel
Anyways a lil shorter blade would be more controllable (if that's a word :P )

Are we in danger of describing the Mora Basic Pro?
I'd go with "shape" over guard. Though if we're thinking about some sort of rubber inserts then perhaps we could also be thinking about a more traditional barrel look?
I also agree. No guard. The sheath, I am thinking all options. And if I want, I can always make a nice sheath for it.I'd go with "shape" over guard. Though if we're thinking about some sort of rubber inserts then perhaps we could also be thinking about a more traditional barrel look?
I'll go with Gareth in this one :tu:
Now how about the sheath? Traditional Mora plastic one, Multi-mount like Garberg/Kansbol or Leather? Maybe all of them?
a lot of people will make a leather sheath if they really like the knifeI agree. That what I would do. Although the new sheaths seem to be top notch.

Anette Norberg, Eva Lund, Cathrine Lindahl, and Anna Le Moine all have two gold medals in it, so there.
I would like a couple (at least) models please.
First would be a three inch version of the 511 with guard and robust style sheath.
Second would be a five inch version of the robust without guard with 511 style handle and robust style sheath.
Old handles are easier to clean and lend to more grips.
New sheaths have better retention and are easier on and off the belt.
My older models have no gap between the blade and handle, my robust does have a gap on each side.
Does anyone else with the newer style handles have this gap?
I don't think I've posted this one here before. I use it as a fishing knife. Slightly modified, does the job.

The communist knife thing? I was listening to a podcast and it came up. I'm looking for the original reference as to not misquote someone but it is just one of those things that probably appeals to some people, sours some other relationships and most don't even know about it if it's kept under the radar well enough

Since I'm looking to expand my collection several models have caught my eye (a lot of them actually), but I'm looking at the 511, Pro C and Robust and seeing very little difference. Sure the Robust is 0.5 millimeters thicker but other than that the differences are escaping me.
So your thoughts on those 3 models and the differences between them please

You asking about the older 511 like mine pictured above or the newer basic 511?
From memory and I could be wrong:
Basic 511 has a polymer handle and narrow thin blade.
Pro C has a polymer and rubber handle and wider thin(?) blade.
Robust has a polymer and rubber handle and wider thicker blade.
Personally I like narrow thin blades and up size either spec as required.
Which one you get should really depend on what you're going to do with it.
My older models have no gap between the blade and handle, my robust does have a gap on each side.
Does anyone else with the newer style handles have this gap?
Morakniv Pro C. [...]
A couple of minus points because of [...] the little gap on both sides of the blade [...]
Considering that I've got only the Companion and Classic #1 (or maybe #2?), and that Bushcraft black, Kansbol and Garberg are out of my price range for now, hence those 3 models.
What I'll be doing with 'em? Simple - bumming around. A few fires, a few lunches here and there, some fishing (well gutting the fish). Nothing spectacular

How do you like the Companion? Maybe consider a Bahco 2444, basically a Companion with a 2mm thick spine? It's a great slicer.
Of those you list, I like the 511's blade the best: If I am not mistaken, it has the same dimensions and profile like the 510, only finger guard added. I love my (newer style) 510.
The handle on the Pro C and Robust is very comfortable, though I don't really care for the added rubbery material, but their profile isn't a great all-rounder, not for me anyways.

It is pretty much impossible to get the fish smell off the rubber style handles.

Can't believe I managed to forget the 510. So plastic handle is what I'm after. Wait, Zoid do you have any issues with your modified Bahco and that smell?
Just got these new companions in the mail! AWESOME!!!!! :mail: :like: :like: :like: :woohoo: Arthur and Ursula seem to think so too :tu:

Now you need to buy at least two to redeem yourself...
About the rubber handle, I wouldn't know about the smell of fish as I don't fish but I'll take zoid's word for it. What I can tell you is that mine seem to absorb a little sweat and grease off my hand so I need to wash them every now and then. Nothing too bad so far, though.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a very good price on the Kansbol? https://www.heinnie.com/mora-kansbol £24 + P&P is a lot lower than the going rate that I can see elsewhere. Not sure what the the exchange is but they are running 35 USD here. Low enough to snag one.

Ok. Here it is 35 USD shipped to my door. That does not seem to bad to me. And let's face it, the Kansbol is a full tang blade. Are you talking about the 510 or the Companion's handle?
But yes, I see the 510 as the Companion's smaller, more agile twin brother with a different -and lovely- handle. (In fact, half the 510's appeal for me is that handle; its shape lends itself to all sort of grips.)
Edit: I think I'm going to start a 510 admirers club. Need to take some piccies first, though :D
Wait, Zoid do you have any issues with your modified Bahco and that smell?
Yes, it stinks.

Kansbol multi mount. (Braces for the pitchforks) I'm having doubts about his knife. Cost, materials used for the sheath but mainly the blade.
This is what I mean, the kansbol is twice price of the companion heavy duty and it's blade is 2.5mm reducing to 0.78mm
The companion hd is over 3mm over the full length, ignoring the bevel in both cases.
Sorry for the really bad photo.
It just seems to me that Mora are producing new models without looking at what they already produce and charging eye watering prices for them.
Now I love my moras, but some of the new ones are leaving me cold. I do like the Garberg for example, especially now the price has come down to something a lot more reasonable.
I'll get me coat

I've not checked, but I think it might have a shorter blade that the Black.
I've never had a Triflex so dont know Grathr but i file all my Moras spines ss and carbon and they all spark a ferro rod,I think though carbon is better with a flint.
I've pm'ed Thomas Morakniv ,I'll let you know what he says :salute:
Triflex was one of those unusual models (description wise) that seemingly went away very fast:salute:
If soft at the spine possibly no good for a spark with a flint ?
If soft at the spine possibly no good for a spark with a flint ?
From the way I understand it, soft steel is bad at throwing sparks.
But it might be that "soft" at the spine compared to the edge, still is pretty hard.
I want one now to try it  but skint and off work with this Ankle so no spare cash ,plus think I've enough Moras :rofl:Yeah, I'm with you on that one. I've got absolutely no justification for buying another Mora. :-\

Too be honest Gareth I would be happy with a few #1 :tu:
Here is what Thomas said. Triflex Steel is O1-steel that got the surface "de-corbonized" (to little carbon to be affected by the heat treatment). Eventually the vendor got out of business. Since then no more Triflex knives ...

So that would make the surface really soft like I originally thought. Now Im even more confused
And the collector in me screams: get one! Its discontinued!
But the Moras I already own are already competing hard to be used, and loosing to the Garberg for bushcraft work. I really dont need the Triflex.

Triflex-steel is a high alloyed carbon steel, were the carbon in surface has been reduced (not enough carbon to harden the steel).
This makes that the blade surface will not be hardened (depth ~0,1mm) and you get a knife that will resist bending and (hammer) hits better than a ordinary high carbon steel knife. The surface of the knife blade are in other words more soft and flexible, but the edge is as hard as any carbon steel knife.
We have been using Triflex-steel in decades on knifes that has to suffer hammer hits and other heavy duty.
Last try

It seems I understood it right the first time. Thanks for clearing it up Zed! :salute:
And yes, I ordered one out of curiosity. :D
I wonder if you file down the spine a little throug the soft outside, it will work with a firesteel.
Good detective work Paul. :police:
I'm not sure that the ability to strike a ferro rod is the defining characteristic of a good outdoor knife anyway, so this wouldn't really put me off buying one.
Think Thomas means spine edge :tu:

I would play with it for a few weeks after it arrives. Then send it along to the next one who play with it for a few weeks, takes some pics and post it on the forum, and then send it to the next one and so on, until it ends up back here.

I make the sheath.
The first one for both left and right handed.
The second and third for left handed.
Thank you!
Would anyone be interested in a passaround of the Mora Triflex?
I would play with it for a few weeks after it arrives. Then send it along to the next one who play with it for a few weeks, takes some pics and post it on the forum, and then send it to the next one and so on, until it ends up back here.
I'll defantly be up for testing it Gathr :salute:
The passaround is on then :tu:

very nice. :tu: is it bad at throwing sparks from a ferro rod?

It has a fairly rounded off spine, so Id say yes it is.
Havent tried yet though :)

Closest to the handle it is completely useless at throwing sparks. No sparks at all.
Closer to the tip the spine is sharper, and it will produce a weak spark. Perhaps some filing of the spine there might make it better.

I filed it a little on the sides of the spine and on the top, to get through the low carbon layer, and now it throws much better sparks.
Not as good as the bushcraft black thoug.

I was looking for the Mora club. What do I have to do to join?
Just post pics of your Moras :salute:
Here's just a couple of my Moras- although I confess the tan Bushcraft is only available in Europe right now. Morakniv emailed me a pic when I asked them if they planned any other colors of Bushcraft stainless beyond Black and Orange.
I have Eldris, Companion, Companion HD, 2000, an older original 2.5mm Bushcraft, Bushcraft Black and Orange, and Garberg. I love them all- capable, no-nonsense, easy-to-maintain, sharp steel. I had a custom Kydex sheath made for my Garberg, although I find the leather sheath to be exceptional. I carry it cross draw and have room for my multitool (Swiss Champ) and my Spyderco.
Do I get to join this club?!

When it comes to using a Mora on things that will smell bad later (meat, fish) I prefer the plastic sheath since it is a lot easier to maintain. The Companion though could use an upgrade, mostly just for style points as the plastic sheath does the job quite well

Good one. I wonder how the Kansbol and Garberg handle the issue of scent going into the handles seeing as one is marketed as a hunting knife and the other as a survival "do it all" knife. Should probably also include the Bushcraft Black, since for me general woods use does spring to mind fishing as well
Well that makes sense. Even if we disregard fishing and focus solely on land dwelling animals, blood is blood and it can get nasty after a while (scent wise)

We should question just about everything. A thought that just came to me, if the Garberg could have this issue, many haters will attack it over it while forgetting that micarta has the same issue
...
Even still, I'd figure the Mora plastic sheaths would be closer to $10-12 and just about as indestructible as the Moras themselves. Seems like it would be easy enough for them to produce and sell them; perhaps I'm the only one who'd like this option though!

Most haters of Garberg are so because it doesn't cost less than $50 USD. Which is ridiculous because Garberg is more knife, and not exclusive from buying the excellent sub-$50 Moras available. Personally, I rotate between carrying my Companion, HD, Bushcrafts and Garberg, depending upon how I feel or what I need.
General question- why doesn't Morakniv qualify as its own sub-heading group, like Swiss Army Knights, Leatherman, Gerber, etc..? I imagine a Moraphile sub-section would be fairly popular. I know we have this Mora Club, but I think it would be justified to have a broader landing strip.
Am I talking out of my Kansbol?
I have two Mora's both the same, but this one I put a leather belt loop on. Don't remember the model; it originally had the moulded guard on it.

When Crow was doing the GAW he said it was a 125 years celebration Mora 511. Looking at their site, it's just a celebration edition of the basic.

On another note I've been reading and researching more on scandi grind and me thinks I'll be doing something that a lot of folks will find as heresy - knock off the shoulders of the Mora Classic. There has been a lot of debate over the years over why the Mora is so effective and some suggest that it would be even better once we actually finished the product we buy (the low cost implying they are unfinished) and sharpened it properly. Now that properly for some means going scandivex, for some full convex, and for me it sure seems like an interesting way to go.
What sparked this is that I found some old documents where I was noting my thoughts on performance between the Classic #1 and an Opinel No.8

I watched a video some time ago by an american knifemaker (was it you that posted it?) that claimed that the scandi grind on the moras originally was ment as a half finished grind, so that the buyer could put their own grind on it after buying it.

Could be. I think it might have been Murray Carter.
When I looked at my old notes and thought about the last couple of weeks (since I'm home now, I do most of the cooking and prefer my knives over the kitchen knives) Opinel and SAKs did perform better in pure cutting performance due to a lack of wedging. Moras cut extremely well with their thin stock and holy smurf angle (about 11° per side if I recall correctly) but I have to wonder if I might be missing out on peak performance as an all around knife.
Now the Scandi grind or single bevel saber or what ever one wishes to call it has a reputation for being an excellent grind for woodworking and ease of sharpening. Oddly enough most of my knives end up with a slight convex due to rather quick sharpening in hand and no longer using jigs, systems or even setting down the stone (might even put up a Spyderco Sharpmaker up for a trade). It could be argued that convex is harder to maintain or that scandi requires more time since more metal needs to be taken off and I won't go into that as I can't prove either one.
What really has the gears in my head turning is the uproar of scandivex. Can't question the durability of it, but the logic sounds plausible. Biggest issue with it is the logical fallacies (read: pure garbage) that many of the largest proponents of it have said (read: spewed out) in regards to other knife related topics.
For me it was between the Companion and Classic #1 since I have only those two. Easy decision in that regards.I have thought about this often and sometimes do. If I am going out to set up a base camp, then scout from there, I am a tad more tool heavy. Knife, saw and hawk. Then when I got out from the camp, I have very little. Backpacking or day long hikes, not so tool heavy. I can get buy easily with just Mora Bushcraft Black. I actually rarely baton even if I just have my knife. When I do, rarely anything above 2 inches for fire prep or say, carving a spoon. Most of the time I can get a fire without feather sticks. Good to keep practice though.
Another point of discussion this could bring up is the general popularity of scandi ground blades. It is no secret I admire the LT Wright Genesis as a grail, but oddly enough I'm leaning more towards the full flat ground version than the scandi. Only huge caveat here is the way we use knives, i.e. are there more woodcrafting tasks or are the tasks very widespread and since all grinds can accomplish the same tasks with various degrees of difficulty, how much of an impact can tasks that rely more on brute force (like batoning) have in the choices of grinds.
Sure it is hard to picture Mora Classic being pushed into such a task, especially since most people will have a hatchet, axe or large knife. However it does get tricker when going with a minimal tool loadout since the big tasks aren't foreseen as a huge need.
To bring you closer to my current mindset you can take a little thought experiment:
You're hiking from point A to point B in a familiar ecosystem. You can have what you can carry on your back, belt and pockets. The hike is organized in such a way that it allows for a comfortable pace, stops to have a drink, get some food (fishing, small game hunting and/or what you brought with you) and set up a shelter that you are hiking with (again your preferred system) but you'll still be on the move for 5 days. What is your tool load out and is every gram of that equipment really necessary? If you want to make things more complicated, you can restrict yourself with a weight limit too. :D :D :D

I find it interesting that you are thinking full flat. Nothing wrong at all with that mind you. But I have never much cared for them. I seems like I could never master them. A hollow grind, no problem. But I am pretty sure that is because I grew up with hollow grind hunting knives. Scandi grind for some reason just works for me. First time I used one, it just spoke to me.
I am not 100% if I want to find the knife that can do everything. I mean, once you found it, what would be the point of living after that? Sure we still have beer... :D
True dat!I am not 100% if I want to find the knife that can do everything. I mean, once you found it, what would be the point of living after that? Sure we still have beer... :D
 but beer is nice
Ok. I think I got it.
I can imagine the knife will become a better slicer if you round off the shoulders. But like Ducttapetech said, you might sacrefice some fine control, then again you might not. It might just be different and need a little practice to regain the fine control.
Question is, will you notice the difference on such a thin blade as a classic no1?
Looking forward to see the result.

The one knife to solve everything.
Isnt that why we accumulate knives? The search for that amazing knife that will do everything? :D
If you are batoning a lot the convex grind is better than the scandi, no doubt.
In my limited experience, convex ground knives are what I call "quick and dirty" knives. They eat wood in big chunks and can take a beating, but can be a bit of a pain for finer stuff. But that might just be because I grew up with scandis and have been using them all my life.
Id probably bring a scandi and a light hatchet.

I knocked the shoulder off of my carbon clipper and also sharpen it on three angles which makes it convex and I can attest that it makes a rather noticeable difference in the wedging department. This is our kitchen utility knife and I use it a lot on cardboard and plastic and rounding the shoulders definitely increases the performance. Also I might add this knife really holds an edge well. It gets beaten like a rented mule and even when it becomes dull it will still cut fairly well :tu:

Nice job mate :salute: this is how little Gaute turned out and it cuts really well ,although I do like a convex grind but usually on bigger chopping type knives :tu:

There pretty easy to sharpen ,although little Gaute took some work as had been well loved before :D

Indeed. :tu: Very tempted to give this a go as well, but I might have to pick up a new Mora to try it on.

Nice Gaute! Nice work on the knife.
:tu:
How does it perform on wood?
Cool. Thanks for the info. Also, nice work.
:tu:
How does it perform on wood?
The board I tested it on gave the following results:
Scandi - average cut depth was 5mm
1st modification - average cut depth was 8mm
The problem is that I snapped the board and threw it away before taking pictures. Since the first cut depth was so low, we can safely say it was a rather hard wood.
Nice job on the modifications
well I am late with the experiment since some things popped up (if you really want to hear my annoyed rants just ask). but here is step #1 - softening the shoulders. knocking the shoulders off entirely is somewhat impossible without moving the knife to a zero grind

As you can see it does look a bit more convexed. In a practical sense I've managed to stab myself while making something jambalaya like (pics of food when it is done). The wedging issue is already much better and slicing ability has improved on soft materials like very ripe tomatoes (that's how I stabbed myself)
Here is a good funny video including a trip to the mora factory with Dutch bushcraft knives

A bit over a week ago. I was carrying a washing machine, it slipped and my right hand got cut across the fingers. 3 stitches on the pointer finger. Should be taking them out this friday (finally)

I hope it heals fast!
I wish I could track some down but my favourite Mora's would have to be the Frosts Mora 740, 760 or 780 in black or green :tu:
They just don't seem to exist anymore
It's a shame mate as I sent a 740 to Dave Canterbury a while back in a trade ,it was mint :-[

Not quite so long discontinued is the Mora Viking (660/640), very similar grip shape to the old 740. Might be slightly easier to find.
pretty
I give up!
I've just spent 3 days looking at the websites of every company in Europe trying to buy an Olive or Black Mora Viking 660 & a Black Mora Scout 440.
Almost every one I found with them in stock would not ship international, some of them nearly burnt out my google translate trying to follow the instructions for the ones that would. :poh:
I actually found a black Mora Scout 440 for sale in New Zealand for £16.49 + £24.81 shipping :ahhh
http://www.top-gear.co.nz/shop/KNIVES+AND+MULTITOOLS/HUNTING+KNIVES/Mora+Scout+Knife+Stainless+Steel+-+440.html
The shops that won't ship internationally outright refuse that or just don't offer that option? If they don't offer the option, you could send them an inquiry if they would ship and how much it would cost

Some of them state in their websites that they don't ship outside their own Country.
Others just don't offer the option.
Usually, in the checkout, the address section has no option to add another Country, also, no mention of different shipping rates.
As you say, it could be worth a try to contact them to enquire.
I must admit to be struggling to follow some of the payment options via bank transfer systems or "blue media".
I've actually found one in Poland that will take PayPal.
"PayPal If you want to pay by PayPal, select the payment method: "Any transfer" and make payment manually from your PayPal account to the store address: As the title of payment, enter the order number, which you will receive from us by e-mail. Please tell us in the "Notes Orders" you pay via Paypal."
Things are looking up. :tu:
more Mora, please. :like: those little cheap buggers

Well I finally managed to order a Black Mora Scout 440 from Slovakia for 26.50 Euro.
I've been spoiled in recent years being able to use PayPal, most shops in Europe that ship internationaly asked for an IBAN payment.
That involved my laptop overloading.
I had the shops website on, my email account, my online bank & google translate. :poh:
Only snag is the bank reckon on 4 days for the money to show in the sellers bank account, that will be even longer probably with doing this late on a Friday evening.
My bank also charged me £5 for the service :ahhh
I knew I'd taken a side-by-side shot before, it's just that it wasn't in this thread.

I guess the classic range is of a more traditional style :tu: but all good ,my personal favourites are the classics as great for carving and compfy in the hand as can hold them closer to the blade and at any angle due to barrel shape :tu: and yes you need one
a bit off topic, but I came across similar Swedish manufacturer Hultafors, anybody have these?
Doesn't look like rust to me, but you can take a bit of steel wool to it if you want to be safe. Stropping with a compound might work too, not sure how aggressive those compounds are though
I think it is rust. I'd avoid air drying it after washing and that should solve your problem.

Sorry for the noob question: rust in knife is not good for food prep, right? Should we then oil the Mora immediately after washing?
I think I'll get an SS Mora next :D

Oil sometimes perhaps, but I'd just clean it directly after use and wipe it dry. :)
you'll end up having a bunch so safe to say that we recommend them all

Cheers mate, my youngest in the picture loves my stuff , she likes whittling and making stuff, due to funds we only go camping on holidays and only usually only twice a year, they both love it , and my youngest even told me a few weeks back that although she would like to go on a aeroplane to another country, she would still prefer our camping trips as we have fun ,tbh it's the only type of holiday they know :tu: they have skills that not many 10-11yr olds have :tu:
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it. I was hoping it was not to boring.
Believe it or not, the saw is just a cheap Coleman. But I have used it for about 5 years so far. Cuts pretty good and has not broke yet. Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it. I was hoping it was not to boring.
Knives, fire, great scenery, flint and steel, PBR, pretty much the making of a mini series. Oh and the hawk and what appeared to be a Bahco saw. :tu:

I figure I would post this here. Hopefully you gents enjoy.
I also have a cheap saw. I sharpened the teeth up and it chews wood like a rabid beaver. Mines a Corona that I picked up for $2 at the flea market. I have wanted to try a Silky boy but haven't pulled the trigger since mine works so well. Nice sheath BTW for the saw.I don't have far to go at all. I live out in the sticks. Just walk pass some fields and I am in like sin. We do have some nice state parks close also that are close. About 30 minutes away.
Do you have to go far to get into such a great area? I'd have to drive about 1.5 hours away to get into such an area. It'd be nice to be able to "get away" more often.
Thanks Gareth!https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R1SaJRpjEok

:tu: I got it in a trade a while ago,I was going to cut the guard off to make it more like a 510 but she wanted it :D she and her sister already have a few SAK'S and moras and a few slipjoint and both under 11 :tu:

Great video Nate! Thanks Gaute! I hope that trick works for you as well as it does for me. Thanks for the compliments!
Please do keep the 510!
(I already have one ;) )
The trick with the sticks to lift the small wood off the nest is brilliant! I have to try that myself next time Im out! :tu:
 How could I forget.....
I handled a Garberg for the first time last weekend
Solid knife, I like it, I love the steel and I can get the knife at a good price..........but it's heavy!
It's so heavy I'm really torn, the Bushcraft Black stays a winner partially due to the lightness, it's proven tough enough.
Did I mentioned I love 14C28?
Made a frog for my Mora 510 that I got from Zed out of some scrap leather.
Thanks Zed! He should like it. That is a beautiful knife mate.
You are a good man Zed. :salute:Thanks Zed! He should like it. That is a beautiful knife mate.
He wanted me to do a handle for his garberg but I knew it wasn't possible due to its tang design, so thought I would just send one of my own personal knives :tu:

Random acts like these give us all hope and remind us that being at least decent isn't backbreaking work
Cheers Zed - Since swapping my only other fixed blade with Zoidberg This is once again my go to. Ive just put a lanyard hole in the handle and have added the fire steel to the sheath. I'll post some pics once it's completely finished.
My one concern with the Clipper though (as with most Mora's) is the short(ish) tang. I'm sure it doesn't affect normal use at all, but I know I felt a lot more confident using my Izula II as it was thicker with a full tang.
Anybody watch "It's always sunny in Philladelphia?"Love that show.

sounds like something up your alley considering you usually have an unorthodox approach in the videos
Thanks gents. Sorry, no pics. It was a no tech run. As soon as we hit the woods, all devices got shut off. We want to be out there with out the world and it problems falling us, if that makes sense.
I will make sure the next time I am out I will grab some pics.
Going to purchase my first Mora. Looking around, it looks like there are several models under $20 - $30...
I've been checking out the Companion, Classic 1, Pro C... pretty sure I want to go Carbon.
I just want to have a decent fixed blade to take fishing, hiking, camping etc.
Any suggestions?

I recall someone sying that the modern handles can take on the scent of fish so that might be a factor (Zoidberg maybe?)
I would like to tell you to just give up. You'll end up with a bunch of Moras anyway. Just like MTs, they are highly addictive:rofl: you're probably right
how often should I oil carbon blades?
Oddly enough I've never oiled my carbon Moras. But then again I use them for food prep a good bit so they develop a patina really fast
Some friends are buying Alox SAKs as group buy over at DLT. Since it will practically be free shipping for me, I decided to order a Mora Robust ($14.95) as my 2nd Mora. Why this model? Primarily because of this video
https://youtu.be/fKlcBpKbAvM
didn't we warn you that they are addictive? congrats on the purchase
looks good
Well here's a new one that's been announced today Mora Garberg Carbon, first 100 will be a Self Reliance Outfitters exclusive and then on general sale in the Spring.
https://morakniv.se/en/product/garberg-black-carbon/?wcmlc=EUR¤cy=EUR
https://www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/pages/mora-garberg-carbon-pre-sale
wait 'till it starts shipping world wide. and when we find out the prices. plus I think a lot of people here are perfectly fine with stainless since only real advantage carbon has is the ability to spark with a rock. i'm sure someone will say sharpening but how many people find themselves long enough outside for that to be a real concern, modern sharpening implements work well on stainless and there is the whole debate easier sharpening vs going longer between sharpening
I for one would still like to see a head to head between the Garberg, Kansbol, TOPS BOB, Terava Jakkaripuuko 110 (hope I spelled that right) and Fallkniven F1 or S1 (depending on which model is the closest in size to these). Actually since I'm at it one could put the BRKT Gunny and Bushcrafter and Becker BK16 in the mix to see how they perform on different tasks, preferably in one of those wet and cold places (mostly because I believe that any of those would work great when slipping and rusting aren't any sort of a factor)
To be clear, I'm a carbon steel guy :salute:
I have however come to appreciate certain stainless steels, that was re-affirmed by a 30 year old Kershaw I'll hopefully post some pics of soon.
As far as the Garberg is concerned, after feeling it in hand I'm not likely to buy either, it feels heavy.
>:D
If your carbon steel knife rusts, you're doing it wrong :twak:

ah cool, thx Zed & Styx. One more thing, in that previous Canterbury Vid he says Mora "Ka Niv" really thought it was Mora "Knife", but I think he would know the correct pronunciation, but damn thats tough to say/change my perception after years of saying it wrong
Wait? What? :o You're supposed to pronounce the K? :ahhh
I find it interesting that in French (a Romance language with a tad of Germanic in it) they have the word canif for pocket knife.
Finally have 2 on the way! First two moras, one stainless and one of the chisel versions.
Be interesting to see how they hold up in salsmurfer.

The Moras was busy Monday :tu:
My wife did her first Degree in English Language and, somewhat jokingly, describes English as "a C11th Frenchman trying to speak C6th German". Hence we herd cows (German) but eat beef (French).I find it interesting that in French (a Romance language with a tad of Germanic in it) they have the word canif for pocket knife.
Must be an old Germanic relic. German and English have quite a few French words, example
Chauffeur
Mayonnaise
Limousine
Repertoire
Btw, post 5885, missed another palindrome :poh:

I've had less issues with carbon Moras than with 1095. A lot less
I don't have a 511, but most Mora sheaths are better than what you've experienced.
I’ve got two 511’s, the bottom one from 1983 and the top from 2015. The sheath on the 1983 is split so I retired it. The sheath on the 2015 is worse than useless

what Aleph said. no need to go full on Rambo, just the usual tasks and how it compares to things you can compare it to. I'd personally like to hear how much the grip slips, if at all when you have wet hands (sweat, rain, snow, blood)

Out driving today and found this lying in the middle of the road %uD83D%uDE0A
Here’s my Mora Companion. I used boiled vinegar to patina the blade after filing the spine 90 degrees for use with a ferro rod. The sheath has a ferro rod holder and rod added along with a sharpening stone. I wrapped the sheath with firecord and under the wrap is an emergency fishing kit, some sewing needles, a couple of water purification tablets and a few wraps of duct tape. I also added a couple of ranger bands to secure the knife and stone.Great set up Tinner :like:

Wow! That's simply amazing! :ahhh
I particularly like the Eldris family. :like:
Picked up this Erik Frost Mora in really rough shape. Lightly sanded the handle and blade then used 1000 and 3000 stones to get the edge up. After I stropped using a few compounds. She's ready for some beeswax and whatever I can throw at her. My KJ Mora is one of my absolute favorites ( red handle ).

:like: Great color combo. I've seen some nice paracord mods to attach the sheath to a belt or pack. I'm sure you'll come up with something functional for however you'l carry it.Thanks. Probably do some experimenting this weekend.

A leather belt loop would go nicely on that. I think the Mora Eldris has one. Maybe the Garberg too.I have seen a few places selling a leather strap loop that I thought about trying, butdon’t know if it would fit because it says it is for Eldris, Kansbol, and Garberg. I think I can do something similar with paracord.
Yeah the one for the Eldris won't fit the Companion. The Eldris is a little chubbier. And stubby. I'll get one once I decide on a colour I like best. That is what I was afraid of.
That is what I was afraid of.
This is what I came up with today.

I used a couple layers of bicycle inner tube wrapped in paracord. The split ring is held by paracord. I may do a paracord belt loop that is attached at another time, but I figured this should do for now.
That looks good. :like:Thanks.
That is what I was afraid of.

Eldris arrived today from Amazon.
You are gonna like it.. :woohoo:You're right, I like it already!
You can use the sheath on the handle for extra handle length.I'm going to try that next time I use it! :tu:
Newest arrival, Mora Kansbol. I like it!

It’s not every knife that’s light enough and so well balanced you can place it on a flower branch and it’ll stay put while still being a little workhorse, loving this Eldris

I'm a bit surprised this haven't shown up yet. When I was a kid most of them had red handles and pretty much all adults had more of them than they know about and was found in garages, sheds, kitchen junkdraw and anywhere else and was in various conditions. A really common workers knife and gets treated as a disposable knife.. More or less and still is. I have had more of these than I can count

Mora prices in general border on disposible for some folks/uses
What model is this? Is it significant ly cheaper than the usual offerings to be regarded like that?I just looked at one of the big retailers and they didn't have them in stock but they have one that I guess is a replacement with more modern looks on the handle and it goes for about 10 dollars. I have never bought any of mine but got then from work. You didn't buy one but a box of them

Also what is the intended purpose of the combo grind?I don't know the purpose of the combo grind, I just like it. :D

I'm just going to slip it in a daypack for some light feather sticking duty.
The Mora Family. I did send back the Eldris light duty as I wanted the regular one.
I now want the Mora Bushcraft Forest....then I'm done.
But can any Mora family be complete without the one that has a sharpening stone and ferro rod holder built into the sheath :pok:I did have that combo, but sent it back, then rebought the Bushcraft Black with just the regular sheath. I didn't like the rectangular sharpening stone on the sheath as it was scratchy.
Oh I forgot to ask. No interest in a Classic? The red wood handled ones are very comfy in hand. Just curious.Yes, I definitely want to own a Classic some day.

New to me Eldris, the one with the grind that is on the Kansbol and others.
I didn't know at first that there are two Eldris. One called Light Duty and then this one is just Eldris.

The Eldris has a compound grind, a scandi grind at the heel for heavy-duty cuts and saber-type grind on the belly and tip for fine carving and food prep. Taken from Web.I appreciate the assist! :hatsoff:

Thought I’d sharpen the back of my companion HD for use with a ferro rod, looks so easy on YouTube :facepalm:I was wondering how much work that would take, I've probably seen some of the same videos as you.

Got there eventually but that’s some hard steel. Took about 20 minutes, after a bit of trial and error found it easiest to place the file on my knee and work the spine up and down from there.
Finished off with a couple of different grit sandpaper’s to get the grain back, strikes well but will take more work until I could make tinder shavings with it

I was wondering how much work that would take, I've probably seen some of the same videos as you. Thanks for the tip FB (no pun intended  ) :tu:
There was another video I saw that said to flatten about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the blade nearest the tip.
That way you keep the 1/3rd near the handle more rounded
for your thumb to rest on when feathering wood for fire sticks. :dunno: Could save you some extra work, just a thought.
Is your workspace in front of a tv? :ahhhEr yes temporarily :twak:

Such a great little knife. They are cute and in every way capable.
I finally joined the Mora Classic No. 1 club.
I had a hard time finding one for sale here in the US brand new, so I found this gently used one.
Nice find FB! :like: :tu: :tu:Thank you Vicman!
My latest, a Mora blade in a custom handle.
Good stuff Kraken. :tu: Looks like the Garberg has come down in price by quite a bit here. Still telling myself I don't need one. :DTo be fair, I didn't need one either. I just figure after two years of looking and wishing, it was time to get one before it was discontinued and I had to look for something else. :pok:
I had been looking for an older Robust and Force and I recently came across these three knives selling together.
Frost Clipper MG
Mora Craftline Robust
Mora Bushcraft Force
(https://i.imgur.com/2MlkXXg.png)Cool pic and finally a spider I recognize, we have a lot of those cross spiders at home, especially now right before fall, during the summer it's mostly jumping spiders, I think they are called harlequin spiders
Bahco on kitchen duty.

Wonderful collection. Liking that Burgundy sheath. They are all :drool:Thank you Aloha, I bought that one specifically for the sheath....little did I know the knife inside is likely my sharpest Mora and that is a treat because they already come super sharp...I didn't know they could get any sharper!

:like:I whole-heartedly agree about the backyard camping. I'd much rather find out he's not in to sleeping outdoors when it's only a 30 second walk rather than a 3 hour drive back home.
Any change to get out and use your Mora is a perfect time. I am a huge fan of backyard camping with young kids. What a great way to teach them in a comfortable environment. Pitch the tent, have cooler with food/drink, use a fire pit, and enjoy. Nice thing is the latrine is close by.
Now as for other Moras. The Eldris is great and since I got my partner one there is another flavor available, the light duty. I also really like the Classic Mora with red handle. You decide the right size but man this is a neat knife. You can get one with finger guard as well as one called the Scout with full guard. I have one of the full guard ones, its an older Frost one and full disclosure, its small.
It seems that my SAK collecting has now turned in to Mora collecting. Man this site can get expensive!:iagree:
I have a Companion, Basic 546, and Pro. Absolutely great knives.
However, the Basic and Pro have a small gap between the base of the handle and the sides of the blade where water can and does get into. It's only a very narrow gap, but I think I should fill it somehow.
I'm debating trying to melt the handle into the sides of the blade, or fill it with hot glue or something that has a bit of give to it. Any ideas?
Mora Companion Heavy Duty.
I made a handle for it and a left handed leather sheath.
