Title: Im going to Canada! (What can I take?)
Post by: G-Dizzle on November 25, 2017, 06:42:15 PM
Hey y’all!

Well, I will be celebrating new years in Quebec, Canada. Quebec City to be exact. Can the Canadians here help me out as to what is legal to take with me as far as knives/tools go? I know I cant take any of my firearms, but thats about it. Also, is it OK to walk around town with a knife like my PM2 clipped to my pants pocket? I have a strict weight limit of 50 pounds for all of my gear and clothes (for 9 days, no washing machine) so I will be packing relatively light. I think I will take my Spyderco PM2, Vic Spirit, A thin SAK, a Case Traditional knife, and a stainless fixed blade (we will be dog-sledding and ice fishing, hopefully cleaning some fish for dinner)

Also, does anyone have any tourist tips for Quebec city? Good restaurants, bars, activities, where to celebrate New Years? Thanks in advance for the advice!!!!

GD,
I am rushing now, you know Saturdays. This evening I’ll sit down and give you the scoop...

Besides being my home town, it is my favorite city in North America...excellent choice.

Oh just thought of this too. Is a belt sheath MT ok for day-to-day wear and is a belt sheath fixed blade 4-5” blade OK for outdoor activities like fishing/dogsledding? Should i keep them concealed?

GD,
I am going to address the blade issue first, then we’ll chat about touristy stuff.

I Canada there is no “size” limits on edge tools. Noticed I said “tool”, ‘cause any self defense weapon is outlawed in Canada. Spring assisted jack knives are not allowed. Find a Canadian dealer on evil Bay and you’ll see what is legal and what is not. PM me for a name. The most easy thing to remember is the following: CONCEALMENT is not allowed in Canada. COMMON SENSE prevails in all the other cases. Example, you can carry a pocket knife in your pocket, a hunting/survival knife is allowed if hunting or trying to survive. You cannot take any of those to concerts etc where security dictates metal detectors. Bars and Clubs might search you and will confiscate ANY blades; the Canadian legal system does not appreciate the following mix: alcohol and blades, large public events and blades etc... again just common sense.
One word of advice, if you find yourself patted down by a LEO... warn him about your Spyderco or SAK before he finds it...they will ask anyway first. Just do not get yourself in that situation.

In Summary: you can carry anything in Canada (except for a short list prohibited edges) in most situations... dont sit at the hotel bar with a twelve inch Bowie...you’ll draw unwanted attention... but a Vic Spirit in a sheath will not. The stuff in your pocket is okay and in Quebec society well received.

Now Quebec City,

You lucky dog... :)

Two main parts:

Lower city (basse ville) and the upper city (haute ville)

95% of the fun stuff, amazing stuff is located in the upper city, all within the “Walls” accessible via four huge gates. Now, when you walk through the gates you’ll be travelling back in time 300 years... literally.

Chateau Frontenac and the associated boardwalk will entertain you for days, that area is full of tiny small streets, neighbourhoods, the restaurants abounds; too many to list. The food is extraordinary everywhere. Expect a cue or wait line everywhere during the holiday season, New Year’s Eve is going to be a zoo regarding dinning out. I am not sure where you are from in the U.S. so please dress the part, the wind hollowing down the Saint-Lawrence River will make your lips fall off.

Just below the Château Frontenac (down the huge stair case) is a little neighbourhood called “Le Petit Champlain”, it is an amazing little place full of shops, restaurants art and entertainment. A “must see”.

Wow, i could go on for ever... it would be easiest on the phone... PM me if interested.

Is it just me or does Canada sound like a RL utopia? :dd: :like:

(Well aside from that habit the local supermarkets have of selling milk in plastic bags, not cartons.    )

Luckily both are available...bags or cartons.

I rode a motorcycle into Canada last year. At the border, a Canadian officer asked if I had any guns, knives, or weapons.

I told him that I had a pocket knife (SAK Farmer) and a "Big camping knife", meaning a 4.5" Kephart-type fixed blade.

He asked: "Like a Bowie knife?"

Me: "No, not really. A big camping knife." [Holding hands apart to indicate size.] "It's right in my saddle bag if you want to take a look."

Canada: "No, that's alright."

And I was waved through. Canada is a pretty cool country, just be careful about bringing firearms in.

I like my “weapons” too much for it to be a utopia for me, but I am extremely excited for my visit!

You will be stopped for firearms, and they will probably be confiscated, or you will be denied entry into Canada.  I'd also suggest that you avoid taking balisongs, push knives or autos as they are all frowned upon here from a legal standpoint.  Assisted openers are fine, OH openers are fine, and when it comes to concealment that's really not much to worry about.  Some folks ask if a knife clipped in a pocket is concealed, and generally no, it isn't considered concealed.  However, it might be if you try to threaten or mug someone.  Generally if it isn't used as a weapon, it won't be considered one.

For the most part, police are not an issue here.  There are relatively few roadside harassments or "street interviews" and they generally don't go looking for trouble.  I would suggest however if you are in or near a situation that the police are involved in, you be polite, courteous and cooperative, as the police in the province of Quebec are known to be a bit less understanding than in other places.

While you are in Quebec City, if you get the chance, visit the Plains of Abraham.  It's really just a big open field with some old artillery on display, but it is a very important part of Canadian History, right up to the modern age.  Read about the FLQ Crisis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Crisis) for some cool modern history of the Plains.  When you get there you'll see all sorts of cool buildings and old forts, and my father was a guard there during the FLQ Crisis, standing, armed, on the steps.  I wasn't born yet, but I could still see my father, younger than I am now, separated from his unit (long story there!) standing guard there, knowing he may well be required to shoot someone and yet not knowing where he was going to sleep that night....

Marc is absolutely correct about feeling like going back in time when you are there.

Also, I will be passing through there sometime in the beginning of January- if you are still there when I pass through maybe we can meet up and have a beer or something!

Is it just me or does Canada sound like a RL utopia? :dd: :like:

We are allowed to have guns too.  Don't let the international rhetoric fool you.  :P
