Two questions. :D
1) Dedicated tools are allowed, right? Like if I need a screwdriver or pair of pliers at home/workshop that won't be considered a failure?
2) Can I get a pass for one day some time in the next month to use a bunch of SAK saws (and only saws) to do a saw comparison test? ;)
I'm here just for the challenge. ;)
But cool gesture with the giveaway of an awesome tool. :hatsoff:
Here's my choice of carry. You might recognize some of it. :D
Here's mine for the month, getting rid of the scissors will probably be the hardest part.
Tourist:
And the Small Tinker, which needs some work on the blades, and some scales, may replace the Tourist once it's finished. I figure no extra tools, still 84mm, should be ok? If the consensus is everyone sticks with the same knife all month, I can stick with the Tourist.

I do remember, great light
Thanks for the reminder, I went and found my E01, so I'll take part in the 5mm challenge too. Updated pic of tomorrow's carry attached.
Great thread. I'm in. I'll be rocking this Victorinox Executive.

Now on a serious note...
Will there be counselling services available for those who've taken up this utterly mad challenge? The pressure and stress on those doing this will be nothing short of enormous. I'm speaking of the true knife knuts here who are used to many if not dozens of models they rotate through regularly. The strain of going with ONE minimalist SAK for a MONTH will take them right up to the brink of madness - and some beyond the breaking point I fear.
The spectators watching this will be in for an incredible show of fortitude and sacrifice to say the least. So I ask that those with the guts to watch what's about to take place - please help out with encouragement and cheers. This could really get ugly, especially as the days drag on and temptations soar with each day, hour and minute.
Best of luck to all...
Resting a well used LD10 and Wenger EvoWood 10 for these two pristine little babies.
If I get on well with the Waiter this month I will probably get a Compact.
84mm single layer SAK and 5mm LED.
I have taken off the Classic Alox and Rally that live on my two bunches of keys, E05 also removed there.
Challenge accepted.
Also worried about tiny pressure-sensitive explosive grenades (griswalds)?Challenge accepted.
I forgot to mention, it's a 58mm Manager. I wonder how well the knife will cut an apple.
Otherwise I'll have to eat my apples like regular people, instead of cutting it up with my Alox custom.
Day one, and I haven't even got anything Swiss :ahhh :ahhh
Case Scout Jr, Nitecore T0 (5mm LED), and a pair of 4LN mini vise grips :dwts:

I think both of those situations are fine. Neither are really EDC type scenarios, one is a task where one would often get dedicated tools, and the other is a special test.
Besides, it wouldn't disqualify for the GAW anyway! :tu:
Wait a sec, we are suppose to have a minimal tourch too? There was an additional challenge (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,54797.msg954775.html#msg954775) from enki. :drink:
Nate
First SAK failure: the small driver on the can opener didn't quite have the reach needed to tighten some terminal screws on a PCB. Could have done with a Technician (http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Technician) instead of my Pioneer but had to get a small flat driver. I had to grab a pair of pliers from the toolbox while I was there to help grip some stuff in the back of the cabinet I was working on. Normally would have a Spirit or Rebar on me.
Oh, I'm in on that one.Wait a sec, we are suppose to have a minimal tourch too? There was an additional challenge (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,54797.msg954775.html#msg954775) from enki. :drink:

My minimal pair for the month - old cross Pioneer and E05:

The minimalist flash light challenge is optional :cheers:And I was going to skip this one. But, might as well go all in. So I switched for my Princeton Tec Pulsar (fauxton). I'll have to figure the best way to carry it when I switch to a knife with no key ring
Oh my GOD WHAT THE smurf WAS I THINKING?!?! Gahhhhh!!!
I Want my SURGE!!!
On a good note, the Compact has been doing what I have asked of it. Just had to make some trips back to the shop at work. Tools like pliers, Phillips driver, and a wire cutter. I really miss my OH blades. I am use to grabbing stuff and opening my blade at the same time.
I did kinda freaked out at for a second. I am so use to carrying my Surge on my side and without thinking I reached for it, and it was not there. I had that gutted and panicked feeling that my Surge was lost. Then I remembered it was safe and sound at home.
All and all, not to bad. So far. Just some extra trips, but a couple pounds lighter. We will see how I do on the farm after work.

...but a couple pounds lighter.I for one am positively enjoying not having a Spartan dangling by p7 in my jeans pocket. That works, but not extremely well, especially when I also have my wallet crammed into the same pocket. I can't even feel the Bantam in my back pocket right now, but it did just fine with breakfast earlier.
[…] The weekends will be a bit harder though as I like to have scissors and tweezers on me, but I think I'll be able to manage. And then you can go for a Compact! :D

I lied earlier. I am going with a black Executive instead of a red one. Its flavor matches nicely with that of the Fenix E05 (2014).

Yeah, that raises a Rules Inquiry for the commissioner. Do we have to stick to the same minimalist SAK the whole time, or can you switch between minimalist SAKs? The former is more in line with the spirit of suffering that this challenge is intended to create.
Morning has broken! The Pioneer is in my pocket and I'm beaming with confidence that we'll blast through this month with ease. :D

Day I - Wenger Wednesday with Champion Spotlight
Mostly light tasks (opening letters, punching holes in the Blini package, chopping an apple to pieces). While preparing lunch I was wishing for a bigger blade, spreading radish mousse was not easy (I used a pearl spoon for the caviar :D).
Shortly before the end of my workday, I was supposed to exchange a hard-drive. Let me tell you, the nail-file does not work for that, so I post-phoned that task for tomorrow when I will be carrying the Midnight Manager.

Well, I do work in an office so my tool requirement are lower than others, so in all fairness I needed to go this far.Day I - Wenger Wednesday with Champion Spotlight

In general, I think it is more keeping in the spirit to stick with the same knife.
I do think there are some OK exceptions. For instance myself and Monrogue are making due with what minimal knife we can find until ours arrive, then we will switch.
Also, switching from a pioneer to an SI for Wenger Wednesday seems OK since it is the same tool set.
Still, its all about the fun of the challenge, so whatever floats your boat. Just fess up if you "cheat."

That was the original plan back when I got the Fuse, but couldn't find one at the right price. The deal I had my eye on sold out just before I decided to go for it :-\ I do quite like the Scout Jr now though. It doesn't walk and talk as smoothly as the Vics, but it functions well enough, sits comfy in the hand, and I quite like the G10 scales too :D
I am entering with my Farmer, am I too late?
Picture comes later.
I'm going with the most minimal SAK there is; the classic. As long as I can have my P-38 along. I'll ditch any other knife and the pistol for the challenge.

:hatsoff: to all of you who takes part in this challenge.Well a Scientist has two layers. Blade/combo tool, and phillips/mag glass. But those are tough to come by unless it's a mod.
There is no way I'd be able to do this; at least not with a standard SAK. AFAIK, there isn't any two-layer SAK with inline philips and knifeblade? That's my most used tools and despite of that, my daily carry consists of 1 SAK, 2 MT's and a single OPMT.
Good luck to all of you - it'll be interesting to follow this thread and see how many of you end up going crazy. ;)

Hmm... I think that's the first time I've heard mention of that model. Gotta investigate.

Two layers or less. Farmer is three layers.
Oh oh I just bid on a swiss champ on ebay this could jeopardize the challenge for me if I win I'll have to carry it because I wont be able to wait till Oct 31 to carry it.
I don't have a compact.[…] The weekends will be a bit harder though as I like to have scissors and tweezers on me, but I think I'll be able to manage. And then you can go for a Compact! :D

I bet there will be a few "clubs" developed within this challenge. Wasn't there supposed to be a list going of who is in the challenge and what SAK they're using?
Fixed
Kirk13 - Vic 84mm Apprentice/ Wenger a Junior 10
Colt - tinker small
Monrogue - compact
Higgins617 - esquire
hiraethus - OC red Pioneer
derekmac - OC red Pioneer
50ft-trad - Case Scout Jr
Sorel - Alox Bantam
I'm tempted to join... It's 1:23pm here on Oct. 1. Can I still participate?
Hmm the 84mm apprentice I made here http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,44794.0.html
would be quite a challenge for me to get by with. I dont know if I could go a whole month with it though.
I better decide today!
I'm going to be interested to see if the Vic copes better than the Wenger with the identical tool load :popcorn:Vics rule, and Wengers.... Well they rule too, so... Yeah... :P

I'm actually impressed with the small blade on the manager when cutting up my apple in hand. It glides through quite nicely. the thin blade and smaller surface area makes up for the short length.Wait until you want to spread butter or something >:D

I'm always in! Led Lenser K1, Leatherman Style PS. I alternate the SAK/knife to complement these. Lately it's been the Alox Cadet. I might trade it for the Sportsman (a few more options but still just 2 layers).
It'll be fairly easy to just use these. I don't have the need for much tools and the small tasks I need to take care off are pretty much covered.

I'm now officially starting the challenge :D The Compact arrived a day early, and it's booted the Rogueneer out of my pocket...at least I get to stare at my precious while sitting at my desk...it's sitting under my monitor. I'd forgotten just how small the Compact is, or at least feels to be when compared to a much larger SAK.You can still touch it, and talk to it, but that's as far as you're allowed to go!! :D
Oh good, as long as I can still fondle it, I'll be happy

Yeah, that is one of the lamest excuses... EVER. Like the teacher claiming to have made the error on the blackboard on purpose. :rofl:Yes, and Wenger Wednesday...I'm disappointed that you haven't sorted the list in some fashion - tool density, maybe. ;)
Shouldn't the lights carried be tabbed across too :pok:
:P
However, while pfrsantos completely screwed up the list formating (missing space after Hyatt), he did order the list chronologically...

Thanks 50ft.

Think ye olde LED rather than the modern (square) high powered emitters.
Old style minimag should be basic enough though I reckon :D
List updated with Nate's maglight solitaire and SAK guy's infinity ultra
Yes thank you. I am not sure which will be brighter, my Bic or or the solitaire?Well if you want to make it brighter, you can always take the battery out and carry matches in it.
Lmao!

What's your usual EDC?
Bought my girlfriend a Solitare, thought it was defective
I just spit my coke out hahahaha. I thought it was defective, not her. I assumed the output would be close to the little coast light I have, no such luck.
That is a fantastic looking meal right there my friend.
How's that for uber minimal? [Classic SD and Photon light].
Bought my girlfriend a Solitare, thought it was defective
Just got the Mag-Lite Solitaire. Man this thing is BEAST!!! All 2 lumens of it. I had to put my shades over the lens of the camera just to take a pic of it.
:p

I wonder if Mag-lite will update this one like are doing with the others. These new Mag Lites they are coming out with are bad ass and for a good price.
Nate
I've done well so far, but really wanted to cheat today. I needed scissors to cut a small zip tie on a wire loom, but since I'm carrying my Pioneer, I was missing my SAK scissors. :( I really wanted to go and grab my Climber, but I resisted. It took me FOREVER to find a bloody pair small enough to do the job too.

I've had pretty good luck using the awl on my pioneer to cut zip ties. I actually prefer that to scissors.
I had a worrying thought last night...
Do any of you remember the Top Gear race across London? STIG takes the Tube,Hamster cycles,Jezza uses a boat(!) and Slow drives...
And,to most Londoners anyway, the result was no surprise....STIG won!
In the same way,I fear this thread may prove that we're proving we don't need big multi layer SAKs and MTs!
Oh my GOD WHAT THE smurf WAS I THINKING?!?! Gahhhhh!!!
I Want my SURGE!!!
I think that's a fair appraisal Noodle :tu: I wouldn't normally miss file or saw most of the time, though there are tasks I wouldn't like to go into without having one just in case. Pliers, scissors and a slightly more robust knife on the other hand, seem to be more frequently needed items. Screwdrivers tend to fall somwhere between the two for me.
I approached this challenge with the view of opening packages at work, and general life tasks, and figured what the heck lets try it. However I nipped next door earlier this morning to see what the racket was my mate was making. He was trying to do a temporary bodge fix of the leak on his shed roof till the weather's better so he can fix it properly, so of course I started giving him a hand. Even though we were in his shed with all his dedicated tools, there were several times when a screwdriver, pliers and a more robust knife on a tool in my pocket would have saved us some faffing about rooting through drawers and toolboxes for a tool.
This wasn't a planned job, or even "my problem", but a simple example of where minimalist carry was an obstacle to achieving what needed to be achieved. The temporary fix has been done well enough for now, but having my MP400 and a decent folder for example would probably have saved us 10 minutes. The rain wasn't too heavy outside, but 10 minutes could have been the difference between electrical tools/equipment inside getting damaged or not.
So far the only real impairment has been to my "comfort level" as nothing has significantly suffered as a result, but with some of the jobs I have in front of me, I'm looking at the Case knife and little torch and wondering why on earth I'm doing this
Oh my GOD WHAT THE smurf WAS I THINKING?!?! Gahhhhh!!!
I Want my SURGE!!!
I think we are beginning to separate into two groups. The first consists of guys like Nate who actually use their larger SAKs and MTs on a daily basis or on the job. This minimalist thing is going to be hard on them, because it entails not having the proper tool on hand or having to keep walking to the tool box.
The other group, which I fall into, use a SAK merely as a daily convenience item - opening a package, snipping a thread or tightening a screw once in a while. This minimalist thing is not so difficult for us, as even a Classic SD will handle these things just fine. For this second group, the only "burden" of going minimalist is that we just have to give up the fun of carrying something larger or switching between SAKs. That's not an inconsequential burden for a true SAK addict, but its not nearly as difficult as giving up a Surge that you rely on all day.
So we guys in the second group definitely have an advantage when it comes to remaining faithful for the whole 30 days. Its only been 4 days, but I'm having no difficulty whatsoever with carrying only the Executive. And I partly wish that I had gone even smaller (Classic SD).

Well, I was kind of thinking about this last night and considered officially bailing out of the challenge.
I need to go and do a few jobs on the boat soon ... and I know the minimalist carry won't be of any use. I could use dedicated tools, but that will just mean I get less done than I would with a multi as I'll be working slower. Same in the garden if the weather is half decent tomorrow. A multitool will help speed things up.
A lot of the time, going minimalist is not a major obstacle - but I'm just forcing myself to be inefficient when it matters. I've annoyed a lot of friends in the pat by waiting till they've gone to fetch the correct tool before pulling out a multitool and having the job well under way or even completed by the time they got back >:D Now all I've done is lowered myself to their level in terms of having to spend longer getting a dedicated tool than I would actually doing what needs doing.
Minimalist carry is better than nothing for generally pottering about, but there's a reason I have a pocket load of stuff on me most of the time .... it works! At the very least, I really ought to take normal carry when going to work on the boat, or having an hour or two in the garden, or doing any kind of project really even if I drop back to the Scout Jr and Nitecore T0 afterwards. Only reason I haven't already failed or bailed, is it's raining so I haven't done any project work yet ... :-\
I wonder if Mag-lite will update this one like are doing with the others. These new Mag Lites they are coming out with are bad ass and for a good price.
Nate
But not in the old school 5mm version, that one has a modern LED.I wonder if Mag-lite will update this one like are doing with the others. These new Mag Lites they are coming out with are bad ass and for a good price.
Nate
Nate, they actually do make a Mag-lite Solitaire LED version now, for what it's worth. :tu:

I am thinking the opposite, it is showing me how much time is lost and how inefficient it is not carrying a bigger Sak or Multi. but if it gets right down to it, you only need a knife. And a tool box.I had a worrying thought last night...

I had this worry as well Kirky...wondering if this would confirm my thoughts that I can get by just fine with something like the Compact and a simple plier based MT rather than the more robust Rogueneer and MTs I carry. I don't like that idea :ahhh
That is a cool pick!

End of day 4 - it's the weekend and my family have colds so I've been in nursing all day. Prepared lunch and tea with my SI and it bit me tonight! Blood everywhere though it's only a small cut.
Hang in there everyone, I hope you're enjoying the challenge as much as I am.
Mmmmmmmm
Nate
I'll have to remember to try and use the awl to see how it fares on them. Thanks for the tips guys!+1. 93mm awl is killer on zip ties.I've done well so far, but really wanted to cheat today. I needed scissors to cut a small zip tie on a wire loom, but since I'm carrying my Pioneer, I was missing my SAK scissors. :( I really wanted to go and grab my Climber, but I resisted. It took me FOREVER to find a bloody pair small enough to do the job too.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I've had pretty good luck using the awl on my pioneer to cut zip ties. I actually prefer that to scissors.

Thanks Gust and Nate - they're both on the mend now thanks to my great nursing abilities (!) Plus I did literally bleed for them.
Food prep again mainly today - opened a can of chickpeas to make hummous and lots of veg prep.
I really like the SI but I'm still missing my usual.

Day 5
Stayed home, did nothing...
Kinda light day today. Used the combo tool to open a can of chili, used to hook to thread some twine through a trap. Blade did some cutting.
But the main thing today that was totally not related to my SAK use, was I got shoot a freaken 50 Pounder mountain howitzer!!!! BOO YAH!!!!

 Sorry guys, I'm out :salute:
Tried it, but it's really not doing me any favours. It's proving to be a handicap in my normal daily life, so I'm reverting back to "normality" as of tomorrow. This exercise has confirmed to me that me carrying the stuff I normally do is justified, and it wouldn't be sensible for me to carry this on. I considerd just carrying extra at certain times, but the reality is I don't always know in advance when the extras will be needed, and makes much more sense to bow out now before I find myself too compromised
Good luck to everyone else

Now I feel tempted too. :twak:
Well to be honest I've been tempted every single day since it started. I really miss the scissors. Occasionally the pliers. I'm starting to feel like a Neanderthal considering how much I've been using my teeth lately for stuff that would usually be done with the tools I had on me.

I hope you mean you lost your temper and grabbed a SwissChamp or a CyberTool. That SAK you showed us was gorgeous, hope you manage to get it back if in fact you misplaced it...
:-\
So far I have suffered through life with with just my two layers but next month I well be shopping for a champ or ct41.
 Gerber Diesel I think tomorrow ...
So far this challenge has me realizing that I don't really need to carry anything other than a SAK.Yep, me too. Although a larger blade would be nice and OHO and a screwdriver that has a larger handle for a better grip. I think as long as there are no torque screws I can pretty much do everything with the Midnight Manager. The magnetic combo tool is actually very handy if you have to fish out a screw from a computer case (something the CyberTool lacks).
I do miss having one on me around home though, as I do use it more here than at work.

Blah! Sunday seen no action what so ever,as to honest,I went nowhere and done nothing...not that I'm complaining :tu:
Today...eh,well I have sinned :twak: I couldn't resist giving my new Delemont Evo11 an outing. Well,it's still two layers!
I did have to use both my big LED Lenser to light up targets at the club tonight, and I needed the P.U.G to adjust my scope, but I couldn't have done these tasks with a SAK or the Fauxton

Same here. I'm also realizing I can get away with only a few tools on that SAK. Which makes me wonder why I've been carrying so much bulk/weight (comparatively speaking) for so long. Also, why I've spent so much time and money on MT's and SAKs...
Before this challenge (ie the day before the first thread started) I had been debating carrying only my SwissChamp for a month or more and documenting each tool that I used. The goal being to mod it down to the absolute minimum toolset (eliminating unused ones) possible. I probably would have ended up with a Climber.

We're only six days in guys ... plenty of time for things to change ;)
Temptation is your friend ... no, wait ... your enemy ... no, wait ... your labrador .....
What was I on about?
Oh yeah, I reckon there'll be a few more joining me by the end of the month >:D

I think the Climber can be replaced by the Compact if you don't use the Awl and think that the Phillips on the can opener is not so great. I'm thinking that is the SAK for EDC.The Compact has many fans, and deservedly so. Though I tried the Compact, I ultimately returned to the Climber, for the following reasons:
This exercise is helping me narrow it down to a "Waiter Plus with scissors" aka the Compact.
I'll still use my Evo 10 (On Wednesday I see) but can see the Compact taking center stage.

Quick breakdown of the brand and size of primary knife used:

23% of the primary knives are alox too - mostly Vic but a couple of Wenger SIs.
And as you can see, 50ft trad has a category all of his own in both cases. :D
What are you folks finding the most difficult part of the challenge?
For me,it's carrying the same SAK everyday, without having a choice.
It's been a long,long time since I've lacked choice!

Kinda sad I can get a 'proper' red dot delivered to my door for half the price of a nerf one!
Day whatever we're on, part two. Used my Classic as a staple remover, cuz I couldn't find the one at work. Tomorrow, I'm not expecting no major SAK chores outside of opening snacks at the hospital cuz I'm HAVING A DAUGHTER TOMORROW!

Yesterday all the Compact did was trim a few stray beard whiskers and open a box. This is really my typical day more or less. Just proves I really don't need to carry what I do for the most part, if I were concerned with being minimalistic that is....which I'm not ;)^ Same here.
Thanks for the well wishes. This will be our second; our 3-1/2 year old boy is staying with his grandparents for a few days.
We were supposed to be at the hospital 45 minutes ago to check in for the induction, but received a call at 4:30 am to explain that the rooms were all full. So, we're officially on call.
Day 8: Ultra Minimalistic
Forgot my Crusader at home, so I went bare
Couldn't open a clamshell package (Had no scissors, no knife and keys don't work well for that :ahhh) and had to use a table-knife for the lunch-break .

I'm still in for the 30 days but I'll never do this again. :)I hear ya! Running back and forth is not getting it. Luckly I have not come across anything where I would have to a MT or Larger SAK. Plus all of the hayfields are up and the bushhogging is done. That's a big plus. But I am gonna try to stick it out. Did fail the torch challenge. I just had to have a bigger light this morning.

You kinda lost me. I think I get what you are saying. People like Joel, Colt and I don't always have instant access to regular tools unless we want to carry a big heavy tool box. We have to go back and forth to a shop to fix things that otherwise out Larger SAK or MT would have fixed easy. Time saved. And time equals money. Now if I know I got a certain job that needs done, I will grab the tool bag, load up what tools I need and go get it done. Also, our larger SAKs and Multis can save our bacon. A few months ago, I come across a huge water leak. Water everywhere. I would have had to run back to the shop, get a wrench, run back and shut the water off. All I had to do was use my Surge and shut the water off. Now the Surge did not fix it, but I was able to shut the water off right then and there and keep anymore damage from happening. On the farm alone, I have saved a few animals with my Surge once and with my Supertimer because they where able to cut or score the wire the animals were tangled up in. I would have hated to have to go all the way back to the shop just to get a pair of wire cutters and go back to cut out a dead cow.Day whatever , as the challenge starts to drag out, it has made me really appreciate a good MT " Spirit " . I think this is meant to cover situations where you'd use another regular EDC item. When dealing with work problems, you have dedicated tools that you use, even when you EDC a Wave, SwissChamp or other. If you need a hammer or a pipe wrench, you have that at work and use it. You'd not use your regular EDC.
Am I right about this?...
I use other knifes at home (bread knife, butter knife...). I use my Sportsman when I would use any EDC SAK/knife/MT.

I'm sure that wasn't the intent of the challenge. You have given the minimalist EDC a fair shot, but found it wanting. I for one believe you could withdraw with honor at this point.

I'm the same way actually. I don't feel completely dressed until I have equipped myself with a SAK and MT combo, or one of them at least.
And Derek, it's good to know you at least remembered your pants

I did remember my Pioneer today though! :tu:
Unlocked a bathroom door with the pen from the Compact. :tu: It's just long enough to insert into the hole in the knob to press the release mechanism inside. I used the butt end first to prevent damage to the pen.
I've never used the pen for actually writing. Also, makes me want to put Plus Scales on all my SAKs just in case. When I carry an MT, I have a piece of coat hanger I keep tucked in the bit sleeve for similar things.
Then I used the scissors to trim tags.

(http://cdn.meme.am/instances/500x/55183312.jpg)I think that's an ok way to lose the challenge :) I'll keep going anyway.
:twak: :twak:
So I sort of failed yesterday...I was helping a buddy move (really wanted an MT on me, but settled for bringing along a tool bag). As we're taking apart a bed frame, I realize I left the crescent wrench downstairs. My buddy's dad pulls out his LM Crunch and hands it to me.
(*side note: The Crunch has been on my wish list for about 3 years, but it's not cheap and it's still in production, so I've waited. I was hoping to get one for Christmas.)
As I go to hand it back, I comment about how nice it is and how I was going to ask for one. So he just gave it to me! Said he had two, and wanted an excuse to use his newer one (good man ;) )
So in an effort to not be rude, I HAD to carry it the rest of the day ;) And it got plenty of use.
Back to the Tourist today though...

Every Grunt from Home Improvement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQwYNca4iog#)
The Pioneer saw lots of action in the shed today - I was building a bike for the winter so lots of packets and boxes got opened, tape trimmed and holes poked with the ream. A multi with pliers and a file would have been very handy but fortunately I had full size tools in the toolkit so was able to use those instead.
I failed. I needed the pliers today. You should had borrowed them from a neighbor
I lost count of the day, it has been too many...
I too have report a fail. But at least I can blame kirky

Putting together cabinets with the tiny Midnight Manager proofed to be very inefficient, so I went for the power drill... Fortunately, I could borrow this beast from my boss:

Cool! For what knife and what kind of wood?
Then we repaired grandmas tire. No knife needed. (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/12/bf8c82640dacc88e779b74d0cb63a4df.jpg)

Our Schnauzer chased cows outta the yard this evening...she usually stays on the road but she went cross country after the cows and had about 50 grass burrs in her feet and legs. I had to break out the Swiss Champ and use it's pliers and scissors to get them all out.....

Really glad I bailed out of this. Had more reinfocement today that having a wide range of tools is a very wise move. Today's fiasco was that the car wouldn't start! I knew I'd got an issue with the distributor from a similar occurence at the weekend. Ended up borrowing a mates car to go and get a new dizzie cap, but couldn't get a rotor arm from stock anywhere so I decided to just try replacing the cap and see if that worked
However, the three screws holding the cap on proved to be a problem. My sockets are imperial, and the car is Japanese ... my screwdrivers were either too long or too bulky for the job. To make the whole experience more entertaining, it was pissing down too. The only way I could drive the screws with my dedicated tools was by setting the socket set up to drive 1/4" and using a Phillips bit. Of course, not being magnetic, the bit kept dropping out and disappearing into the ever growing puddles of rain under the car, but no other dedicated tools in my toolset were suitable alternatives ....
The knifeless MP400 in my pocket was just a little too clumsy for this particular role, and I didn't have a SAK in my pocket today. There was only one other tool in the car which was capable of getting in to where it needed - the Core that lives in the glove compartment. Pop out one of the arms at 90 degrees, and Robert's your aunties live in lover! Still an awkward job, but now least the car is back running again thanks to a pliers based multitool.
A minimalist SAK wouldn't have been able to help with that job, except possibly a Scientist, which might have been slim enough to get in the required spaces. I think I might switch the Wenger Toolchest that resides with the Core for a Cybertool as that might possibly have been slightly easier to use with the driver arm out at 90 degrees.
Just charging the phone now, and then I'll take it for a run just to be sure I've cured it

That old, worn Pioneer is truly an icon here on this forum!
Starting to enjoy my little waiter and look forward to grabbing it in the mornings. That's true SAKnight spirit ... :D
The tool density and selection for my lifestyle is superb for one layer. I will carry this quite a bit going forward.
Will be getting a Compact next weekend (the next 6 days are in Mozambique and camping with the little waiter) ; with the extra scissor layer it could be my ideal urban EDC.
Going to be a bitch not to carry that for the last week of October ;)
Worried about flying with the waiter, I hope I can check in luggage at every hop, there is a chopper bit and a small 4 seater plane in the mix. Oh well , its cheap, like $15 to replace.
I caved today, officially out !!NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! LOL!

Good go man. I gotta tell you, I am about to cave in. The Compact is a great SAK for light duty days. Also great for just running into town or parties and does pretty good when paired with a Mora and a Hawk when camping.
Just kinda rough for heavy duty days. Still I like the Compact. Been a good SAK.
Nate
Been rather busy and made tons of trips back and forth to shop at work and at the farm. One job, I was NOT going back again. All I had was my Compact to cut some solid copper wire.
And I got a couple of pics. Not for the weak hearted. Luckly is was not the big stuff but still.
And yes, that is my boot stomping on the blade.
I also suggest not to do that to many times.
Nate
Used the tweezers from the J10 to remove lint build up from the drive axel of a mini RC skateboard....beat that for a weird use!
I'm out. :-\
I know I could probably last till the end of the month but don't want to anymore. My other tools are giving me sad looks and begging me to carry them.
Truthfully this has been a bit strange, like listening to the world cup games on the radio (sport of your choosing) while you have your big screen TV in the room, turned off.
Good luck to all of you but I'm returning to my Syph007 Urban Pioneers PhD and LM Mini. :P
I'm still in. I will confess to the occasional fondle of my other tools though, in particular my black Climber plus and my Spirit. :-[ Turns out I really miss scissors, nail file, a proper phillips driver and pliers.

Forgive me, for I have failed. I had to use the Surge yesterday after work. Yes I could have ran to the shop and grabbed some pliers and a phillips, but I had a weak moment and said smurf it. But in my defence, I had a coffee pot down (needed new cord) and I was with out coffee. Now I have been shot at, charged by Holstein Bulls, kicked by horses, bitten by dogs, found a dead body, stomped by cows, fell through a shed roof, watch one of my tractors go up in flames, but going without coffee. NOT! GONNA! HAPPEN!
And when I fail, it is epic! Not only did I grab my Surge, I grabbed my Mini Mag Pro and my SOG Vulcan and rocked that smurf for the rest of the day. I was looking for stuff to cut and fix. Some of didn't even needed fixed or cut, but I did it anyways damn it. And it felt good!
So today, I am back to the Compact and Solitaire. Hopefully I got that out of my system for the rest of the month.
Nate
I'm officially out.
Two reasons: I'm just needing more options for work tasks( stripping and rebuilding a RC controller yesterday being a case in point),and we don't have a tool box to fetch from, unless you count me!
The other reason is just as important...I'm missing the pleasure of choosing which SAK/MT/ combo to be carried, and there's just been too much bad smurf in the last week or two not to allow myself this small pleasure!
And just for the record,today is Rebar/Wenger Tradesman/iLight iO3s

Congratulations on your emancipation John :drink: :D :D
I guess I don't use as much knife as I normally carry. The small tinker is working so far. Used it to help unpackage a nerf gun yesterday.
They're dropping like flies!:D
I have to say, without scissors and a toothpick I'm looking a bit of a mess at the moment. I didn't appreciate how unruly eyebrows and nosehair can get in 17 days!!!!!!
I should have at least chosen my Recruit with it's oh so sweet T&T. Oh well, if wishes were fishes etc.....
I MISS NOT BEING ABLE TO PICK AND CHOSE EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS!

SI/Soldier or the Pioneer series are great tools, but they need a companion, because T&T are such useful tools, as you already know now ;) at least a Classic. For that very reason, if the option is only one essential model, I would always choose a Spartan, Sportsman ... Wenger s10 :D

Cool pic!
.. I had a coffee pot down (needed new cord) and I was with out coffee.
Great looking knife!! :salute::cheers:
I'm learning that what I miss the most when carrying only the Executive is the standard flat driver/bottle opener. More than a few times I have had to go find something with which to do light prying on a paint can lid, the plastic nut during a vehicle license plate installation, etc. I think a better minimalist challenge for me, though not really that much of a challenge, would have been a Compact so I would retain the flat driver.
But I did order a black Wenger Evo 16 to make myself feel better. I just won't be able to use it for a few more days.
Pioneer again....

I know it's close but I'm out. I want to carry something different.

Sounds like a banned Cornnut ad.
Nate
Nice pic! Gonna have to grab a bag of cornnuts now.
Mmmmmm
Nate
Though I'm not participating in the challenge, I've been going pretty minimalist lately. Over the past two weeks, the SAKs I've used the most have been my Rambler and Minichamp. I'm slowly realizing just how capable these little suckers are. The keychain SAK is always just kind of there for me, but lately I've made a conscious effort to use it, and have had absolutely no problems with tasks around the house or out and about. :tu:
There is some truth to it, but mainly its the coffee.
Go ahead and grab another cup.
Nate
Lol!
It fell from a latter. I was opening the blade with one hand and dropped it. Didn't help that my hands where wet and greasy. On a good note, I did get the blade open, but I lost it at that final snap.
Nate
I forget now, but one of us is using a Case knife for the Challenge. A Scout I believe.

Nate
I hear ya! While I have enjoyed this and cursed the challenge, it is not for me at all. But I do see the Compact getting some pocket time down the road. It is nice for light days. Pretty good for camping too. Providing I have my other tools for camping and bushcrafting.I forget now, but one of us is using a Case knife for the Challenge. A Scout I believe.
Nate
That was me Nate :waving: - Case Scout Jr, but I bailed out LONG ago :D Good little knife, but the whole minimalist approach was just not viable
Alright, I am putting an new entry in for the challenge since my Compact is out of action til I get some scales.
I gonna set it up to hard core mode. LOL! It is still a two layer knife.
Case Muskrat

Leaving aside some concern that couldn't perform some task, not having all tools available, have to say that such a challenge it's very stimulating ... >:D
And there is one less worry, which SAK to choose
Yes it is and its a user. I tend to carry it with my Surge so I can have a couple smaller blades.Alright, I am putting an new entry in for the challenge since my Compact is out of action til I get some scales.

I haven't had too many updates in this thread, because it's been much of the same. Tourist is able to open mail/packages, occasional light pry job or flathead screw. But I've had to keep dedicated pliers, scissors, and bit drivers in various rooms of the house (and the back of my Jeep) to keep up with little daily chores and prepare for what ifs.
For me, this really hasn't been too much of a struggle (I work an IT job from home), but I have missed the fun of picking and choosing what I want to carry. I have a feeling November will bring a lot of SwissChamp/Super Tool combo days, just because :D
Awesome photo!
I'm not even sure if I'll carry an MT when this is over. I know I don't need much out of one, so I might just carry a PST.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
You are probably right. I think my OC red Pioneer will stay as my primary SAK though, but I might (probably) will rotate through my MT's. I do have a SwissTool, which is a fantastic carry. God I love that MT. :dd:I'm not even sure if I'll carry an MT when this is over. I know I don't need much out of one, so I might just carry a PST.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I could probably do the same really....a PST is probably sufficient, especially considering I only really need pliers sometimes. Although if I were carrying my Compact or Pioneer, I'd carry a more loaded MT. With the Rogueneer though, I wouldn't need as robust of an MT. Who are we kidding though? You'll be carrying your Charge or MUT or Swisstool (I think you have one right?) and I'll be carrying any of mine ;)
Because of the Challenge, I will never, ever, ever give up my large SAKs and Multis again. This challenge showed my just how many times I really use my bigger tools without thinking and just how handy they really are.
Nate

You have a good point there in that this challenge has the potential for some of us to have to think outside the box and use what we have available. I haven't really had to do that much at all though, which isn't a surprise to me. Oh, and before this challenge, I didn't have to worry about which SAK to carry....it was the Rogueneer :pok: ;)
More pecans.....Yummy. :D

You were almost there shamus.I here yeah, all the trips back and forth to the shop is getting really old.
Oh well.
I'm barely hanging on. I have had to go to the garage 5 times over the past weekend to get dedicated tools that I normally would have used my cyber 34 for.

Are we doing this to the 30th or the 31st?
Day 28
I have to admit I got lazy. I stopped cutting my fruits (Apples, Kaki) because its too much work with that tiny blade. I didn't think much of it as it is more practical that way but in a way its like giving up.
58mm as main blade just does not cut it :P
I'm going the full 31 days......Let me fix that for ya: I'm going one over the top!
Bah, 31 days aint nothing.

What - a different SAK each day for 30 days? I wouldn't last the week!
I'll keep toting my ALOX 93's (like I used to) but will add a Trail Guide/Traveler/Swiss Champ etc to them as scissors/file/pliers are needed. They are still handy as heck in a kydex necker! :2tu:
BTW. I'm adding this Wenger SI to my EDC rotation! :tu:

Nice one SAK Guy - as a fellow SI user for this month I have to say how useful it is - I can't think of a better basic pocket knife and tough as old boots. I used to like the British Army Knife as it's pretty tough too, but it's nothing like as comfortable to use as the SI. You have to admire the design and look of it. Beautiful and utilitarian at the same time.

No no I so wish I could but you know rules is rules.
I've been using my Compact almost daily to cut open boxes at work. I used the nail file after trimming my nails last night. I used the scissors for some whisker trimming maintenance today, and used the toothpick for its intended purpose. One day left :D
I will say again that this challenge has proven that I could likely get by with a Compact only....if I wanted to ;) I've only had to use pliers once this whole time. I haven't encountered anything that the Compact couldn't handle during my normal daily life outside of that one instance of the plier need, and the one instance of needing to reach a cord under my desk. In neither of those instances would my Rogueneer have helped. I think it's just extra bulk I'd be carrying, but I do love it >:D

I've got tomorrow's carry lined up: Cybertool 41, Swisstool X and Fenix LD20. 8)You probably should add Farmer, Micra, Surge and a Machete, just to compensate :D
One more hour and the challenge will be over! Not sure about you, but I am not. No way!
I had planned to see the month out but now I'm not sure.
What do you think I should do?
Props to all of you cats who have honestly gone minimalist for 30 days, as well as those who have been honest in acknowledging your withdrawal from this glorious event.

I have had some fun with this. I am also glad it is almost over. I have learned that minimalism does not work. Does not work for me anyways. I failed the light challenge tons of times. Only failed the tool challenge once. The Compact, while a nice SAK, has not been able to handle a lot of jobs that I came across. It will still get some pocket time when I get some new scales for it. Just want to add, thanks again Colt!Uhh, I forgot about the light challenge. Well, I for one did good on that one, the Midnight Manager covered all my light needs. :salute:

It's been fun and I love the Pioneer, but I do love having the other parts of my daily Kit on me. Leatherman Classic, a traditional (usually a Stockman) and then the Pioneer or Farmer. :)
Bring on the next challenge... Swisschamp pocket EDC?
Ahhhhh, so much better....
Ahhhhh, so much better....

I'm not going to carry the dolphin. :ahhh
Wow, its FINALLY over 8)
It was certainly an interesting month. It proved to me that I really don't need much as far a a SAK goes. I got along just fine with the Wenger. The biggest challenge was wanting to carry something else.
It also goes to reinforce the obvious: we all have different needs. Whereas I and others could get along fine with next to nothing, others situations require a bigger load out.
Either way, I for one am glad to be back to normal

One more day, folks! For me anyway. Didn't know it was a minimal light challenge, although that doesn't really affect the Fenix E01 I've had on my pocket for two or three years now. I did change my normal one out for a new one, because the old one was starting to flicker and sputter, and generally becoming unreliable.

Yes my friend, your eyes are not deceiving you ;) If I were to truly go minimalist, I'd have to give it a go with my new Pioneer. The Compact wasn't as much of a challenge as I originally thought it may be. The biggest challenge was missing my Rogueneer. So now I have another problem with my carry. I want to go back to the Rogueneer, but I also want to carry my new Pioneer, which would have to be paired with the Compact probably. I guess we'll see after the final day of the challenge ;)Told you, my friend, told you ...

Freshly swept out ... :D
;)
I have to say I'm rather glad the challenge is all over. Other than the couple of times I needed a Phillips screwdriver that I noted I actually did survive, but really missed being able to change what I was carrying when I liked. Also if I'd still been working there would have simply no way I's have lasted more than a single day. :D
It's like being in a sweet shop isn't it?
I have my Farmer close at hand, my SI in my pocket as well as my Tom Sawyer and I'm still hankering after my modded Camper as well! How many do I need??
Loved your EDC bag pic too SAK Guy
I'm still carrying my OC red Pioneer, but I have my BO BN MP600 today too. :)
