Title: SAKs put away while I try something different...
Post by: zrxoa1 on December 03, 2018, 01:23:48 AM
Not sure if this is proper place for this. Mods feel free to move if need be!

I decided to try something different. For over a year I had been carrying my Wenger SI nearly every day.  I did put it in the drawer every now and then and try out one of the other SAKs in my tiny collection, but always went back to the SI.

Several months ago I decided to start carrying my PX instead. Just your standard silver and I ground off the key ring nub.

A few weeks ago, after someone borrowed my PX and scratched the blade, I decided to add a beater knife to my carry, for rough use. I used a slip a fellow MT.O member gave me.

All has been well, but I admit to a wandering eye. I had been looking at the Boker Tech Tools for some time, but none had caught my eye because I don’t like the corkscrew.   Well then I saw where CountyComm commissioned a special run of the City 2 from Boker, replacing the corkscrew with a Phillips driver AND limited number made. So I grabbed one. Not as a collector piece but as a user.

Once it arrived I have to admit to liking it. The blade is awesome, the black G10 scales rock and I can easily take it apart to clean or mod.  :tu:

I decided to carry it solely for the rest of this year. Basically a month. Hopefully that will give me the info on how rugged it is. I already have some mod ideas, but those will have to wait.

So until next year, my SAKs are tucked away. I had actually started carrying my MT.O Pioneer X when not at work. Using a 3D printed dangler clip, I used it for my weekend carry. Saved the old PX for work use.

I got a start using the Boker this weekend. Nothing major, but it’s getting used. I also removed the pocket clip for now as I can’t use it at work and it’s light enough that it doesn’t bug me being in my pocket.

I’ll let you know after New Years if I will continue with it or go back to my SAKs.   If any of you have any insight on dealing with the Tech Tools or modding, hit me up.

Mod wise I’d like to replace the serrated blade with either the Vic can opener/flat blade or the 93mm inline awl. I do miss having that awl. I actually used it a lot!!

You all have a great week!

I was eyeing one of those the other day, as well.

I would definitely remove the clip, too.

Interested to hear your thoughts over time!

I've looked at these several times, but never could pull the trigger. The corkscrew was one reason, so it's nice to know there's a Philips option.

Couple of questions:

From the pics I've seen it looks like the serrated blade/screwdriver does not open completely 180 degrees. Is that true? If so, seems like a bad injury waiting to happen using that as a screwdriver.

Second, are the back springs flush with the liners?

Third, any overall thoughts on its fit and finish, particularly compared to your pioneer x or SI?

Thanks!

You are correct, that blade only opens so far. I don’t like that, but I knew it going in.

The springs and liners are not exactly flush, but pretty dang close. They feel like they are...

If you are referring to the serrated blade, I don’t know. That is just the way they made it, for some reason.

Another guy here, Hobie I think he’s called, swapped that blade out for an inline Phillips from a SAK. He had a different model Boker than I have, but it was basically same tool as mine.

There is a video of it on YouTube.

You can put a Vic can opener in its place.
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=67166.0

I've been curious about these. I'd rather have a Ruike or Sanrenmu branded one. They also make a 111mm one. They are appealing for sure.

Just yesterday I added a post to the thread linked in the previous post, to show that a 93 mm awl can be added with little modification (not needed on the tang).

My thoughts on the Tech Tool in general:
- The build quality of the implements seems to be on a par with Victorinox.
- I like the wide main blade.
- I have the green scales and these are very grippy, probably no different to the black ones in that aspect.
- I thought I could get used to the small serrated blade but I haven't - extended at the full 150° or so, it is awkward to use, especially as a screwdriver where index fingers are in danger of being pinched and cut. The replacement with the 93 mm awl referred to above was mainly in response to a question, but could end up as a permanent fixture (or perhaps a small blade).
- The implements are a tad more widely spaced than in comparable Vic offerings. There's pros and cons to that. Better cleaning, but more space required in-pocket and more prone to attracting copious amounts of pocket lint...
- I like the pocket clip, but it can be easily removed if you don't.
- Some criticism has been leveled at what some call the 'pocket shredding' glass breaker. I haven't had that experience yet, but then, I use the clip...

Its seems there are several viable ways to mod that little blade. I may have to finally pick one up

Ok, have a 93mm awl on the way, to replace that belt cutter. Can’t wait!!

So far with the Boker, I am missing the scissors of my PX.

There is one drawback I neglected to mention...

You need to open the awl first in order to get the cap lifter/flat head tool open.

Great mod! :like:
Infinitely more useful than that accident waiting to happen. What about the awl width? Did you need washers or was it just a drop-in?

I left the lanyard ring in as a spacer. The awl and the original tool are pretty much same thickness. I have not officially measured yet.

It could probably use a tad thinner spacer but it’s working for now!

The awl has blood bonded with you already ...
Hope it works out. It doesn't touch the opener? If it did it might become a bit blunt right there.

I don’t think the sharp edge is hitting the opener, just the upper edge rests on top of the cap lifter.

So far, carrying the Boker for 11 days, the only thing I can say I’ve missed versus my Pioneer X are the scissors. Last night I needed them badly.

I use them for a number of things, but I gouged my finger pretty good adding the awl before work and had a flap of skin that kept getting caught on everything and I needed the scissor to excise that little piece of tissue!!

I ended up using my thumbnail like a cutting board and used the awesome blade of the Boker to gently cut that flap off.

I will admit I miss the “feel” of the alox in my pocket. I tend to fidget with it. However, the G10 of the Boker does have its appeal.

In all honesty, I foresee returning to the PX in January, because the Boker, as good as it is, is really a compromise. With the PX I have my blade, awl and the two opener slash screwdrivers.  Plus those wonderful scissors!!

I had to sacrifice the small flathead for the awl. I do use the awl a lot when I was carrying the PX.

The Boker is very nice and easily customizable, compared to the SAK, but not as refined.

I will probably need to just break down and pay someone to drill out the rivets on my PX and put it back together with torx screws. Then I’d truly have what it is that I want!!

You are right about the G10...a totally different feel and as my son would say warm feeling. I prefer G10 and have a set. Thinking of this one but loosing the fish scaler. Or two layers.

I have the only other one that Boker offers without the Corkscrew as I have Zero need for one and it sort of bugs me having them too.

I was able to play with them all art a local store before jumping on board too and although that serrated thing is mildly terrifying for sure I really like the knife overall anyway.

Mine has Pliers like the Mechanic pretty much and bigger scissors that have worked fine for me although I will admit I NEVER think to use scissors on a knife for some reason anyway?

This and a nice right angle Phillips,an Awl and larger straight driver/opener  and really nice fit & Finish and what is there to not like?!?

I also love the Clip and this is something I honestly wish was an option on SAKs too.

Few updates on the modded Boker...

Have noticed damage to the awl and the caplifter.  It is caused by the awl hitting the caplifter when closing.

Not a great big deal, but damage nonetheless.

One other thing...

While I love the feel of the G10 and love the blade on the Boker, I do miss a few things from my Pioneer X.

I miss the scissors and the small flat blade of the can opener. I never use the actual can opener though.

Also, I dislike how I must first open the awl, all the way, in order to open the caplifter tool. Not very handy that way.

Probably go back to my Pioneer X. Work on the Boker and see what I can do with it.

Shame. I really like the Boker!

I just modded mine with an inline screwdriver from a late model Explorer. You need the shorter driver that's in the knives with the clear-framed magnifier. It works great. I just reshaped the tang with a grinder and then a hand file.  Post here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,67166.msg1940887.html#msg1940887
