Title: Opinions needed on finding a Swisschamp XL
Post by: FolderBeholder on March 23, 2018, 04:33:50 PM
I'm interested in reading your opinions on finding an XL for sale (preferably in original box).
I'd just like to collect it and not use it.

Have any of you noticed the going rate for these, a price range?
Just curious and hoping to land one some day.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not really sure what XL you're talking about ... .

Are you talking about a Swisschamp XL or a Workchamp XL ?  Or maybe something else ?

I apologize, I am referring to the SwissChamp XL.
I will try to change the title of the thread if it is not too late.

As a regular user, you can not edit titles yourself...

Pretty certain a member here from NZ had a swisschamp XL for sale some time back, whether it was ever sold I couldn't say. I was often tempted to buy but then fell out with victorinox altogether and haven't bought a Vic since.
On a side note, the Workchamp XL is a BEAST of a tool, everytime I handle mine it puts a huge grin on my face  :D

About the Swisschamp XL, well, I can't help you find one, but what I can do is ease the pain a bit by posting some pics of mine ...

Me and my family were on vacation in Switzerland back in 2015, we were in a newspaper store when my wife pointed out the old looking Victorinox box behind the counter, yep, my wife found a brand new, mint in box, Swisschamp XL.  And it only cost 99 Swiss Francs (which was about 97 Euro).

Apparently, if you get sufficiently lucky, like Jaydar (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,75091), you can get one of them for a price that makes even the one Top-Gear-24 got seem overpriced.  As far as "properly advertised" Swisschamp XLs go, it looks like one seller sold a few of them on eBay over the last 18 months or so. One seems to have been auctioned and sold for $510 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/112215672828) and then more recently, this item (https://www.ebay.com/itm/112653764956), this item (https://www.ebay.com/itm/112655110430) and this item (https://www.ebay.com/itm/112718815845) appear to have been sold for $600 each as "Buy It Now" items. It's unclear to me if he really sold so many or that some of the apparent sales didn't really complete.

It is hard to know what is going on with those, he seems to have many or as suggested, sales didn't complete.
I'm not keen on spending that much for one.  Don't get me wrong, I have paid dearly for some.
Part of the fun is in the search.

There's a place called "SAK Heaven", it's not that far away from our country, and sometimes it seems as if there's a surprise SAK behind every counter.  I've never spend so much money on "souvenirs" like I did during my trip to Switzerland.  And you can visit the Mecca for SAK fans ... Ibach.

How I WISH this were an XL!!  Although it's not new, it has all the attributes I like in an eBay ad:

Of all its fine attributes, the price isn't one of them!
If it weren't for that I'd say go for it anyway.

Actually he is considering selling it. Do you want me to ask him?
What would you consider a fair price?

I do not know what he plans to do with it but he stumbled upon this one and he is more of an alox guy  :salute:

I would buy it if the price was right though...

I'd want to trade some Alox, but I am at least second in line.  So I will wait until Mechanickal has his shot at it.

Is there any Alox specifically he's looking for for a possible trade?  400E is possibly reasonable, just more than I'm willing to spend in cash at this time.

That's an awesome one Lisa  :o :like:

also, FULL DISCLOSURE:
my mate went through all the implements in the Swisschamp XL and found out that the two specialty blades (straight blade and hawkbill/pruner blade) have weakened springs due to their years half-opened in the store's display,

so they don't close with a snap and a little push is required to drive the blades fully into the tool  :ahhh
so he decided to reduce the asking price a bit. All other tools are perfectly fine  :tu:

I just wanted to make this public in case that it is finally sold to someone here  :salute:

AIUI, that's normal for the pruner/e-blade layer on these SAKs.  It's certainly the case on my XLT.

Something to do with them having 3mm pivot holes?
Or simply that the spring used is not optimally shaped for the tangs of those blades?

These are gold and really hard to find. Hopefully I'll get my hands on one as long as I can afford it. Saw one on Ricardo go up recently, wanting 999CHF (almost $1200 usd)

Did you get ever your XL FB?  ???

Seems like prices escalate for these unusual discontinued models
I guess he XAVT will head that way now - Although possibly a few still in stock with some vendors

EDIT PS: Was this thread before you inherited the CS collection?  ???  - I would have thought he would have one

Correct Huntsman, I posted this thread before I had CS's collection.  He did have one and it is the only one I have.  :hatsoff:

Seems like the XAVT prices are still somewhat ok... Lots of people are winning bids average 450 and generally no more than $500. All those $800-$1000 prices have just been there stagnated for a long time with no buyers... same for those tiffany silver champs.

But I do see in time those XAVT and even the XLT will go up in the next 2 decades or so. Either way I still want an XL.
