Title: The Grand Tour
Post by: Gerhard Gerber on December 15, 2017, 05:07:10 PM
They deserve their own thread  :salute:

Just watched S02E02 and I can confidently say THE MAGIC IS BACK!  :like:

You can see they're getting old, the iffy smurfe is gone, and I LOL'ed and LOL'ed

 May they live forever!  :drink:

I'll be watching no.2 tonight.

That electric car went up in flames quick in the 1st episode, and they said it kept reigniting for 5 days as the battery cells broke down.  Clarkson expression in the drag race after his overconfidence was good to.

I liked season one, especially the dune buggies in Namibia episodes. I had waited till the end and binge watched several nights after work.

Looking forward to watching season 2

They brought back the interview  and racing each other part with celebrities which is the bit I disliked in TG

Does anybody watch the show because of the interviewees or care about them?

I think they are just wasting show time that could be used by the three presenters  to entertain us..

Not really. If the show was unscripted, how did the chain smoking model (assumption from her voice) suddenly turn up with multiple costume changes? The interruptions in the middle of doing a voice over were rather too convenient, etc.

Did you notice that when May is supposedly surprising those people by putting out their BBQ, the camera man had to have already been in their garden as per the camera angle? Heck you're the man on the ground there, you probably noticed a bunch more stuff. :)

It was the same thing with the supposed out takes of Clarkson killing his car and the camera crew being annoyed. They were terrible actors.

Lads having fun is what they're good at, heck even if they're my dads age. :D Acting, nah. They should leave that for the professionals.

that part didn't make sense. also the May and the car surviving are fairytale. he had Zagreb licence plates and was in Dalmatia. that car would have been torched in a matter of minutes. well hours in Zadar, minutes is more of a Split thing

OK......not sure how much of a fan you are, but I've watched every single episode....several times. (TG & GT)

They joked about the "unscripted" part years ago when they won some prize......

I can honestly say the only time it bothered me was when they regurgitated jokes from the early seasons.........that's just lazy.

How can you even expect a show like this to be unscripted?  How can you expect to have a good view if the camera man wasn't in the yard?  And in these litigation crazy times, do you honestly think the mighty Amazon  would have an international star put out some random BBQ fire and get sued for pain & suffering?
Sure enough.....that gag wasn't very funny, but the episode was a finger in the eye.....or just a finger......and I found it rather sarcastic, which I like  :salute:

Why is the fire a problem?

I always assume that when a country is not in the news there's peace and quiet........sounds like not so much....?
I have a friend from your country, got to know him when he moved to SA and we went fishing a few times while I was there on holiday.  We had long talks, and some of the things he said really struck me.

we have a lot of wildfire problems and even though there are all sorts of fire bans some are badly regulated on paper and others are even worse in the field. a few years back there was a huge tragedy as 12 firefighters died on the spot and 1 in the hospital.

doesn't matter if you take Croatia, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Spain and probably some other countries, but every year there is a lot of fires and many people lose everything. ofc some of those fires are intentionally started and some are negligence

I finally watched the first two episodes.

Regarding the drag race at the end of Episode one.... WTF?

If you have to spend over an hour setting the car up, shouldn't you at least get a better lead than that?

Otherwise, pretty cool.  :D

I am excited to watch the second half of the Columbia episode- it looks like a good old fashioned Top Gear adventure, and I do so enjoy those!

The Dune buggy thing last season was cool, but they were too closely matched.  It's nice to see them in totally different vehicles again, even if Clarkson did make the obvious choice for it.  Although I think if I was trying to film jaguars in the wild I may have opted for something with a top!   :ahhh

They even joked about winning awards for an "unscripted" tv show back in the day, while obviously there is a script.....they try to make it entertaining.

IMO when they manage to make it seem unscripted, that's where they start winning.

Take the river crossing during the Columbia special.......obviously contrived, but so what?! How great is building a bridge using the one car.....not like it's CGI!

While taking so long to get ready, keep in mind the demon is factory 840 HP, vs the aftermarket tuned 1000 HP Camaro...

That may be, but the Demon is factory tuned rather than aftermarket tuned.  And, the ethanol heavy fuel used would make a huge difference in it's own right.

Not to mention how much further ahead the Camaro would be in the hour and a half that it took the Demon to get ready.

True, I'm assuming the results would have been reversed had he been allowed to street race.

Still, it kinda feels like the camaro is akin to pulling the engine from a demon and dropping it into a dart or something similar.

it's a shame that TGT is only for Amazon Prime users (and people like me who just watch whatever episodes are available on youtube or can be found floating around on the dark web). Just like RoadKill and Dirt Every Day pulled off youtube and is now only available in MotorTend on Demand, where you can only watch a few episodes and not even the latest without having some paywall in your face.

I have tried watching the new TopGear, but they are just trying way too hard to copy Jeremy Clarksons humor in it ...which just makes it annoying to watch.

The only other good car show that doesn't involve a bunch of bearded and tattooed guys "making custom cars" and forcing you to watch their fake drama and arguments, is wheeler dealers...sadly Edd China left it, and the guy who replaced him "Ant" does an okay job for being Edd's replacement, but a lot of the "good advice" he gives are based on you having a whole garage with like 100.000 euros full of tools and equipment and then; yes you can save money on fabricating something yourself rather than buying it, but no ordinary person has that ....Edd Chinas advice was a lot more relatable.

Not seen Wheeler Dealers without Ed

Not seen Top Gear without Clarkson/May/Hammond

Last Fast N Loud I saw Aaron had left. (His new show Shifting Gears isn't great, plus 2 EPs per build, only 6 EPs per season, there are 2 seasons)

I think I'm a season behind on Misfit Garage (Ex- GMG crew, at least it was at the start...)

Totally lost on Graveyard Carz... I think I'm now several seasons behind, and I only really watched it for the mopars, the drama kinda ruined it for me

Recently rediscovered Vegas Rat Rods, kinda digging their less polished builds.

Clarkson said "the next 13 weeks" during the first episode.......and I'm watching the 14th episode this evening!

My mother had a Ford Escort 1600 Sport......with banana branches.

Had many firsts in that car, doughnuts, power slides...........and drunk driving

At some point later in the 14th episode I had a nostalgic tear in my eye thinking back to that Escort......

......when they cut back to the tent and Clarkson had tears in his eyes and couldn't talk

I am pretty sure that most people agree with you on that.  I know I do.  :D

True, but I'm still sitting with a lot of Top Gear nostalgia.....

Absolutely- I will miss Conversation Street... and yes, even the intros to it!

I love the back and forth between the three of them, and I will absolutely miss that part of it, as the back and forth is a lot different in the  adventures, but then no one goes back to watch the review of an Audi they did in Series 14, do they?  But, we go back and watch the Polar Expedition, or launching the Reliant into space etc.

I think it would be sinful not to watch the Polar expedition once a year

Since Top Gear is improving I guess we can watch that for car reviews and the rest, and trust the 3 wise men will entertain us a few more years with the specials  :salute:

Really enjoyed the Jim Clark retrospective on season 3 episode 5, amazing early F1 footage, and good story.  :tu:

The last Grand Tour Special called Sand Job is going to be released on February 16th.

I wonder if it will be good like the Beach Buggy Boys or boring like A Massive Hunt?

It was OK, a bit long, but still comfort(able) watching, like going out for a drink with your wife or an old friend.
