Title: Ok...Someone please explain this to me because I don't get it!
Post by: GraysonK on December 23, 2009, 12:17:20 AM
"A Christmas Story"  I don't get it!!!  Why does it need to be shown for 24 hours on Christmas Eve and what is the obsession with this film???  Ok, yes it's funny.  Yes, I enjoy watching it once or twice at Christmas time because it's like a tradition (Like watching Frosty or Rudolph or Miracle on 34th Street) but SERIOUSLY!  What is the fascination with this movie????   :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh And before anyone suggests it...I know I don't have to watch it but my sis will not let anything but that be on during Christmas Eve.  Wow!  :D

because it's "cheap" to play and "It's A Wonderful Life" has been bought by NBC and they only play it once a year (with commercials and commentary YUCK!) and TNT is trying to make a new cult loving following similar to that.

remember when It's A Wonderful Life" was played as much? it was great, now many young-lings don't even know what it is. NBC sucks!! and killed a great movie and tradition.

could be worse, could be  White Christmas, or  The Wizard of Oz at least Christmas Story isn't 60+ years old

I don't think it's intended for a "marathon" viewing...more like a movie with a ton of funny scenes people can stop and watch for a few minutes at a time while hanging around a party.

I've seen it once and thought it was good...but I have no urge to sit and watch it again..it doesn't have the lasting enjoyment for me films like First Blood and The Thing have :D

I'm pretty sure they do it with just with the single purpuse to irritate the hell out of everybody. It's all part of an evil plan that I still have to figure out. But there must be something evil behind it  >:D Let's face it, they do not show it for our entertainment. The same goes for Trading Places, you know, with Eddie Murphy. Like the movie but not for the 7.000.000.000th time!  :ahhh

Nah, it was Eddie Murphy in trading places. Along with Dan Ackroyd.

There are several films that the TV companies roll out every bloody Christmas. My personal bone of contention is the Sound Of Music. Bloody awful film that.

I know that I shouldn't let it bother me so much but everyone around here that I come into contact with cannot wait for 24 hours of a A Christmas Story.  I have a friend who asked for and is receiving that stupid leg lamp thing from that movie and intends to put in her front window for all the world to see just because of that movie.  It's crazy.  But then again...perhaps I'm being a little too sensitive...after all I watch Star Trek every time it's on, all the Star Wars movies whenever they are on, and (sorry DaveK) but I love the Sound of Music.  I guess I've just never really gotten the whole Christmas Story vibe.  Other stuff too...I don't get Jay and Silent Bob, or South Park, or Family Guy or the Simpsons.

As a kid the one that always seemed to be on (and I pestered my parents about it endlessly) was Flash Gordon.  Looking back the acting is bleeding awful, the special effects are ropey and the sets/costumes are camp as heck, but I can still happily watch it.(http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs4/i/2004/239/c/7/Whip_Emote.gif)

LOL!  I was waiting for someone to start quoting it.  LOL!
Dave,
A Christmas Story is not a bad movie at all!  I do like the movie, I just don't understand why it needs to be shown for 24 hours when there are so many other movies that could be shown during that 24 hours.  Like Pacu pointed out, there's Scrooged, Jingle All the Way, Gremlins (classic!), National Lampoons, and a dozen or so more that I'm forgetting right at the moment.  LOL!  I forget who said it but it probably is cheaper to show just one movie for 24 hours then to line up a bunch of different ones...I'd actually never thought of that before.  I recommend that if you get the chance to watch A Christmas Story...it is very funny.  But only in small doses. ;)

Miracle on 34th Street (original, not the bastid clones they have out now)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original cartoon, not the terrible movie)
Little Drummer Boy (original cartoon)
Santa Claus is coming to Town (cartoon)
The Life And Adventures Of Santa Claus (cartoon)
Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (cartoon with Fred Astaire narrating)
A Christmas Tree (movie with Willam Holden, it's sad)
A Christmas Carol (all but the older B&W ones are better)
A Charlie Brown Christmas

Queen are (were) an institution - you don't like or dislike them.  :twak:

In theory, they and their music represent just about everything I hated about the music industry, but the talent, showmanship and endless ground-breaking things they achieved can't be dismissed.

You have to respect that.

Totally respect that, just never did care for them much...well there was one time I kind of appreciated them but that involved mom and a bunch of other parents storming a soccer field singing We Are the Champions as loud as they could after we won a particularly huge tournament.  That was the first time I'd ever heard of Queen actually.

Saw a couple of comedy Christmas movies over the Holidays that were decent enough that I'd watch them again.

"Deck the Halls" with Danny DeVito and "Just Friends" with Amy Smart and Anna Faris:

Anna Faris is hilarious - one of the few Hollywood actresses not afraid to go all the way and make a complete fool of herself.  ;>

I'd never even heard of her before today

But then I don't really like movies much, so it's no surprise I've never heard of her :D

With over 30,000 posts is it that you don't like movies or simply don't have time for them?  LOL!

Nah I just don't like movies coz there just a bit to shallow for my tastes :-\

I prefere a novel or tv series where they get the time to built a character :), rather than just try and blow you away in the first 5 minutes :-\
Well, I have to agree with you there.  I much prefer books to movies.  Most movies lately have disappointed me especially if it's based on a book I read.  The actors they choose just never seem to match the picture in my head of the characters they portray...example Tom Hanks to me is NOT Robert Langdon.  :)

You know, that's the only one of those books that I read and then saw the movie and I totally agree.   :tu: Everyone keeps asking me why Tom Hanks doesn't "work" for me as Robert Langdon and who else I would pick and I honestly don't know...I just know that he isn't it.  I think the casting for the Da Vinci code was all wrong, quite frankly.  I usually love Ian McKlellan but he wasn't right in that movie either.

Well I've not read or seen any of the Dan Brown books/film, but I do get the impression that if Mr Hanks expressed an interest in being in your film, your not really going to say no  :D

Don't get me wrong Mr Hanks is a fine actor, but he has been miss cast before :-\ I love 'Saving Private Ryan' but he was far too old to be playing a Captain in the Rangers ::)

:)  That's probably true...he is a very very good actor.  And he didn't do a "bad" job in the movie.  It just didn't really work for me. As cliche as it sounds, I think the one movie franchise that has nailed quite a few of the characters very accurately with the casting for the movies was Harry Potter.  Gary Oldman was perfect as Sirius Black and they couldn't have found a better Voldemort than Ralph Fiennes.  I know that Harry Potter is the height of literature, but I sure enjoyed the books.

I have to disagree here! I thought Alec was a wonderful/spot-on Jack, bright, passive-aggressive, articulate, the look (black hair); I thought he was perfect and was very disappointed when Harrison Ford took over the role.

and what's up with the new Dumbledorf! :twak: I know you cannot replace Richard Harris but the replacement is Horrible!
