Title: Shop projects
Post by: Sparky415 on December 03, 2015, 11:20:31 PM

So there’s already a thread for woodwork projects
http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,49361.0.html

I thought we should have a thread for other projects
Anything interesting you have made in your workshop  :tu:

Let’s not have any “health and safety”  whining If you don’t know how to do it safely there’s plenty of health an safety advice out there on the net or ask an adult for help
So don’t come running to me if you cut anything off or boil your own head in the microwave  ::)

Projects...

So I wanted a chop saw, I’ve seen some made from 4” disc cutters on you-tube,
All you need is a hinge and some kind of spring   wonder if I can find a big hinge combined with a spring then it would be easy....

 ;) Door closer

Bend this bit to 90

Screw it to a square of ply, add a bit of ally and mount the cutter using the second handle hole  :)

Slick little setup! :tu:
I miss my little shop(a shed) I didn't have much room so I made a all in one table, only took up 4'x2', but it was a router, a jigsaw, and a table saw, which was a circular saw mounted to a 11"x12" piece of wood that dropped in place, just like the router and jig, I also had a drill press that was a simple drill mounted to a system that sat on top. I do have a pic but it's just me cutting a large she of ply so I don't think you see much. Sorry..

Many years ago I worked with a Guy that used a lot of spray paint in rattle cans (no not Banksy   :P )
We made a ‘shaker’ from an old motor/gearbox, he would load it up in the morning, it rotated very slowly and be ready when he needed them
He would do a little spraying and put them back in the stirrer

Broken microwaves are full of useful stuff, (see opening paragraph)
The power lead on mine had crimp connectors that fit the little turntable motor  :o  :D
mine turns at 4rpm so its no good if you don't have half an hour of prep work first

Take a book end, add a piece of PVC pipe and....

Might save someone a little wrist action

Here's something I've just knocked together, an attempt at making my version of snowshoes. :D  No idea if they'll work but as they basically cost me about £3 I thought it was worth a shot.  All I need now is some deep snow to test them in.

All made from bits and pieces I had kicking around.  None of it was ever intended to be used to attach a boot to a plank. :D

The basic shape you created is amazingly reminiscent of water skis.  If they don't work as snow shoes you might try them out on the nearest lake, but you'll need a friend with a boat.

There's a couple of places in the UK that 'give' you a little pencil when you go shopping there,
All across the UK builders vans have these rolling around in the glove boxes/ash trays
But they are a little small for my hands  ::)
So...
I stuffed one in the end of some copper pipe,
then added a brass nut thingy to stop it rolling,
then added a magnet so I didn't keep loosing it

That worked ok, been using it for months  :tu:

True enough.......what I'm missing for most of my projects is a good scrapyard to source parts and materials!

For instance, I have a large diameter piece of metal pipe with the one end welded shut that I use like an oven in my forge when I do the heat treat, and that has a hole burnt through the side......

As I follow some woodworking pages on facebook there seems to be a rash of "shop projects" in my suggested feed, which is fine, but lately I've noticed a lot of them are using the same tool fixings they are intending to build (IE tablesaw, drill press, scroll saw, etc) to build the same very diy fixings.

Given I have no space for a proper workshop it's very tempting to get one of those allinone multifunction setups for minor projects. (like this:)

There are a couple of solutions. Renting tools is fairly easy and many people (me included) have sporadic opportunities to use well equipped workshops, in my case my father's or grandfather's but they are 250 and 500 km away respectively. There is also a number of workshop clubs where you pay a membership fee to user their tools.

Or possibly the authors are just lazy, that's probably the more likely case.

Probably, it irks me that they are "fixing" a solution where you should not have the means to do it in that manner.

Given I have no space for a proper workshop it's very tempting to get one of those allinone multifunction setups for minor projects. (like this:)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mNptklwylc

What you need is an old Shopsmith. The models from the 50's are almost indestructible and it is still possible to find parts. (At least it is on this side of the Big Pond.)

I'm actually tempted to a more dremel based setup, since I really do not have space, and anything must be gathered up and stored away. Also it's unlikely I'm going to do any large scale projects here. As mentioned, that may involve rental or similar.

I well understand your lack of space issues, but there is still a tool solution.  You are correct.  Shopmiths are too large.  You need a Porta Shop!

This is the electric multi tool that might meet your needs!

I'm kinda tempted for a Dremel workshop, cause I have absolutely no room, but back when I did have a shed as a workshop I kinda made my own setup, one of those shopsmiths would have been perfect but I never knew of them. But what I did was make a unique table, where the center lifted out and you could attach a hand power tool to make it into a full size piece of equipment. I don't have any pics of it except me cutting a full sheet of plywood on it. But the circular saw turned into a table saw, also the jig, and the router, all on a 4' x 2' table, I also put glides and the switch was no more then a normal 3way house switch that controlled a outlet on the back but I broke the connectors on the outlet so I could put a foot switch on, so one outlet was on/off, and the other you had to turn the switch off and it put the power to the foot switch, I did find a pic of a unique setup, again uses all hand power tools and turns them into full size.

Any info on that porta shop? That looks interesting..

Ok, my first project of the new year, what is it you ask? I had no clue these things even existed until I even saw one on amazon, even after seeing it I had to do research. But I liked it and kinda needed one so I set sail to the hobby desk to fig it out,

Now, if I had a little workshop with a coping saw and a barrel sander or belt sander I would have had this thing done in 5min, but I don't so I ended up using a Dremel for everything except the fine sanding and rubbing leather on the edges. Besides that all it is, is a small piece of plywood I pulled out of the basement by cutting with the sak farmer saw!

So here it is, a thumb book page holder, hey it works, I'm down with it, I'll have to try it out tonight!

As you can see in the pic they make them in all diff shapes and also in plastic, but that plastic one is very cheap and the reviews said that it breaks, yet since it's so thin you can also use it as a bookmark by flipping it and putting it in atop the book, but then again thin so it breaks. Now if it was that thick clear plastic maybe in that neon green, or layered in black with the neon green or red shaped like the one I did or something like it, that would be freaking cool! Don't we have someone on here that works with that thick plastic?

Here is a picture of my shop.  Don't have a place to forge at home, like to get enough of a forge to at least do heat treating.

Got lucky with the desk it was all of $5.

If I had the desk when I got the vise I may have gotten one they can be bolted down, but it is actually pretty convenient to have one I can move around.

Yeah I am guessing that it got marked down due to weighing a ton.  It is a good desk only thing is when I move I am not sure if I am going to abandon it or not, (it will depend on where I go next).

Horseshoe (my 1st) basically done but needs to be cleaned up.

The plier bits will be made into scroll tongs but I have yet to start on them.

Then there is my attempt at a sales, needs cleaning and heat treating.

Friction folder blade, it has been tempered now I just need to make the handle.

The scales on my Juice which are done.

So it seems it's much more recent than I thought, more likely 90-ies. I also have way too much general renovation work to do here to actually get to do any real project with it

The picture isn't that good, it's place in the middle off the shop makes it a way to good place to unload stuff on (that's why the cover is there to protect the surfaces).

Under the cover is the planer and the round area on the top is the lid for the router. I wish I had a kitchen to make cupboards for or some other suitable project to put it to the test.

Not really a project, just maintenance
So the G/F breaks her favourite garden fork (it's best not to speculate why  ;)

Drill out the old pin, use a 4inch screw to remove the broken bit, make a new pin from a 6inch nail

Heat up the pin and hammer the hell out of it

Sorted

I think I will post this in here, even though it didn't go quite to plan I'm fairly happy with the result
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,70600.0.html

I  am going to get a makers stamp manifactured that I can use on wood or leather

Mmmm I think I will give DIY a try

I've got a little brass knob  ::)

Bolt it to a piece of wood and flaten the top
(http://i.imgur.com/iSi7WpJ.jpg)

Copy paste glue
(http://i.imgur.com/oCXk30e.jpg)

Not going so well, letters are too small  and my fingers are too big  :(
(http://i.imgur.com/8pwOE4L.jpg)

Sand back and start again
Lets try some bigger letters, no room, try just the numbers this time

That's working better  :tu:

Add some heat
(http://i.imgur.com/RdmsVUH.jpg)

Not too bad (happy  :D )

Make a Walnut handle
(http://i.imgur.com/MO3tOMe.jpg)

Well I'm happy enough but it's a shame I couldn't get the smaller one to work on there,
guess I will have to throw some money at it if I want it done properly

Just a thought but how about making it out of wax then getting it investment cast in brass?

I have thought of that Mate but it needs to be small enough to fit on things like an axe handle (so I'm thinking about 25mm)
after casting I would still have to finish it off with a dremel and I don't think I can work that small

The idea of carrying on with the 415 after the Sparky415 didn't work was to see if it was doable/useable and to see how small I could work with the dremel

Just finished a little unique shop project, made a few more hankies but also a little something to hold them and show them off at the same time, how's this,,

I did some research to find out some people use a old school library index card drawer, which is cool but can be very expensive! I also found some unique round hanging setup, but couldn't find them anywhere. So, for the past couple days I looked around the house to see if I could come up with anything, and well, this is what I came up with, all junk just laying around,

1, a glass salad dressing bottle, needed something with a little weight to make sure it didn't go anywhere,
2, a bunch of marbles, adds a little more weight, also centers the shaft so it doesn't move,
3, a aluminum shaft, was from some old multi piece mop, cut to size,
4, a coat hanger, just the wide part, cut to length, I rolled the ends cause I was thinking of putting a diff clip on but didn't,
5, and lastly a bunch of bobbypins, they have a little larger end which fits over the coat hanger, I got a few more but no need to add any until I make more, but I might get the larger pins this way the round end slides nicely on the coat hanger, might also get some nicer marbles? I could also add another coat hanger but rather then side to side front to back, but all in time..

Thanks, I fig yeah they could go in the dresser, but then you don't get to see them, then the index card storage, but then again, you really don't see them, well maybe if you just use the drawer, but again just the top part? So I saw that other round top with clips, and I did find them for sale yet their like $60 and up, and well this cost me $0! Works for me! And if I make more they'll fit, if need be I can put another hanger front to back, or just make another..

My machining is limited to my lathe but a bolt action pen is definitely on my want to do list. Not sure how I would make the slot for the bolt though.

I have a couple knurling tools but I have never used them on something so small.
One thing I made back in 93 was a ballpeen hammer, so wish I still had it, but a very simple job, two pieces of steel, one like 3-4" another like 10", put a knurl as a grip, other end a threaded tip, the other piece a striking head, then other a peened head, with a hole to tap for the other piece to screw into. After cut the end a little past the head then peen the threads over. Was a fun little project, I so wish I had a lathe, I'd so like to make a bolt pen with a knurled grip!

Check the solder joints on each end of the stator. My old Milwaukee grinder had a tiny separation at one of these points. It had only about 3 hours of use before it pooped out. Resoldered and it works fine now. I did have to press the stator out before I could see the problem. I took the gear housing off, pulled out the rotor, and pushed it out from the back.
Getting it back in was a real treat. ::)
Good luck wallace!

Actually, I reckon you could fit more on there if you hung them all vertically?

Yeah, 90 degrees orientation to how you have them now. You still use two pegs, or you could make specific holders with slots just the right width so they can't spread apart.
Could hold them by the head or the foot of the handle or both like JR's suggestion

I've been playing Axy jenga today (I did try vertical)  :D  :tu:
I did want to get some of my smaller axes up there but the pegs are just too wobbily  :o
It's not very safe/secure so I'm going to have to come up with another way of making pegs or hooks, maybe some wire

Nice, Tony, you could show them off even more without the sheaths. I reckon to go vertical you need some U shaped pieces so you have two prongs sticking out that can't spread

You just need a small spacer piece on top of the pegs that has the lower side of the axe head, most likely the poll side. Then it will hang "straight" vertically

It should be, but RFID crime for cards is such a minimal return that crooks pretty much never bother with it, passports are a different story.

Not really a shop project, more like project: shop
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4700/38493617260_526e015740_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/21DxRjd)
It's taken me a couple of months to get to this stage, but having taken another carload of junk to the tip and shifted all of the firewood up into the cellar I can finally move around in the workshop.  I'm not sure what the final arrangement is going to be, but I'll probably end up with one clean bench for assembly and measurement work and one dirty bench for drilling and grinding.  The grey bench to the left I liberated from work.  The brown one at the far end was going to be thrown out by my son's school - it's a 2.5m x 0.8m piece of particleboard desktop on some old kitchen cabinets.  There are two 1.2m LED ceiling lights, and a 100W-equivalent spot light over each bench.

Not sure what the next step is - sort the storage properly, and get some floor tiles down, probably.

So I have been thinking about your workshop   :ahhh

Two bits of advice I would give is paint all the walls/ceiling white before you get it all sorted (something I didn't do and regret now  :( )
And get yourself an offcut of thick carpet to stand on in front of the bench,
It will make it less tiring to work on and protect any stuff when it falls on the floor  :salute:

Oooh, Tiles! You need to get some big ol ceramic tiles   :ahhh

Everyone has that similar setup for their drills, like how many drills do they need? All these pics I’ve seen there’s like 6, “all cordless”, like I have 4, a cordless, a corded, a corded 1/2” hammer drill, and one cordless I’ve never used that came in the package deal. So only two of mine would fit, one that I’ve never used..

I only own 2 drills. A good quality battery one and a huge mains powered sds one that has chisel bits as well.  I've got a couple of battery screwdrivers though

Nice job, like the craftsman box! I’ve always liked the older ones, Grant it there heavier, but there not flimsy cheap tin! I’d rather have a 5gal bucket with a tool organizer, at least then you can get a piece of wood or a special lid and sit on it and not the metal flex and kink every time

What I did to them was...
Gave them a rub down with some wire wool to remove loose rust and paint but I didn't go over the top with the cleaning (as you can see)
Then gave them a good 'de-grease' in the bath () with scouring cream
Then about three coats of lacquer,

Laquer makes everything look Good!  :D

I've wanted a shopdog for a while, but they seem to require alot of compound angled cuts. Please post your results here when you're done.

If you were looking for non folding ones I would have recommended these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s89lN8FmDSI

But as far as folding ones go, the shopdog seems like the most solid alternative/option.
Title: Re: Shop projects
Post by: Syncop8r on June 03, 2018, 01:02:02 AM
How about these?
They look like the ones in the last video.

I watched another video of one similar to the shopdog and in the comments the shopdog guy accused the other guy of copying him. It turns out that design is everywhere though - someone linked to a store selling them.

My design may be a combination of the above styles. The legs will only splay outward in one plane not two to keep the cuts simple. I have some pallet wood I could try it with.
Now, what height? I measured a friends' and they are 690mm high. My Workmate copy is 760mm high so it could be good to have it at the same height but lower may be better for sawing.
Title: Re: Shop projects

Go 760, useful for working with the workmate,  :tu:

FYI (for our American friends):
22" = 559mm
23" = 584mm
24" = 610mm
25" = 635mm
26" = 660mm
27" = 686mm
28" = 711mm
29" = 737mm
30" = 762mm
31" = 787mm
32" = 813mm

Those would likely be stiffer in the longitudinal direction due to the extra top brace, though the hinges will still give some play

Another little project....

I wanted to make a sign for a young friend of mine that has been under the weather lately  :salute:

It is surprisingly easy to do  :tu:
Find a nice piece of wood then print out the name in your preferred size and font
(https://i.imgur.com/3hT1LOH.jpg)

Glue the paper to the wood with some PVE glue, then use a burr in a Dremel to 'dig' out the letters
(https://i.imgur.com/ryZ4wiR.jpg)

Then fill in the letters with your choice of paint
(https://i.imgur.com/q5RX4Bp.jpg)

Then sand off the paint and paper with a sander
This is what you should be left with  :tu:

See I said it is easy to do

One thing I don't like about the Shopdog is how the top rail must be separate because of the way the legs cross.

This is what I came up with.... a prototype made from old pallets:

First I needed the tops of the legs cut to 20° in this shape:

All under the watchful  eye of my Supervisor:

Next time I will try a more accurate method of cutting.
Title: Re: Shop projects
Post by: Syncop8r on July 15, 2018, 07:10:14 AM
I chose these hinges because I thought their length down the legs would be good. In hindsight their pin is very short and I think butt hinges (like for doors) would have been better.:

Getting there....

Now to cut the legs down:

I thought about housing the leg braces in but it became too much of a faff with my limited tools:
So I only did one side.
Title: Re: Shop projects
Post by: Syncop8r on July 15, 2018, 07:14:17 AM
Not quite finished but it will do for now:
The plan is to make some sort of brace to stop the legs from spreading although it doesn't really need it.

One side housed, the other not  :-[ :

Maybe chain or rope, but I would prefer something rigid like a wooden or metal brace so that it keeps it's shape if you want to quickly move it.

Well if your want to go solid how about taking a piece of plywood, hing on one side then run two strips on the other side so when it drops down that cross piece fits in between? This way when open it will also give a platform to store stuff on too?

I've thought about something like that, not sure if I want to store stuff there as it means I have to bend down to get it.  ;)

The two strips is a good idea...  :tu:

True, but the shelf would be like 8” above ground so it would be better then reaching to the floor.

I made a rainstick, not the real thing but the pringles version. I think I need to double down on the three runs of nails I put in cause it only lasts about 2sec if lucky. I’d so love to get the real thing though, I could just sit there for an hour with one, I did when I was at my grandparents back in the day..

Hey sparky, I want to tap your brain!
I need something for my shop, I need like paper towels but too big, I’ve been using napkins, that’s more the size but I’d rather have them on a roll, so what about a toilet paper roll? But how do I hang it or put it somewhere? Thoughts?
Here’s something I found, I remember I saw something else long ago but can’t find it..

I have one of these (second hand) from Ikea, I removed most of the rods and screwed it to the ceiling
The hooks make a handy place to hang stuff while paint is drying etc

Nice, there is a rod since it is technically a closet in which I could put through but to put a new roll on every time would be a pain, but I did think of doing it last night! As for my thought I went ahead and did it, I found the pic I remember I saw long ago and after seeing it I new what to do but in which way, I had the perfect container and in the one pic you can see it has the perfect spot to cut out to allow the tp to roll through, or do I do like that soda bottle looking one and rip the core/tube out and pull it through the end? Anyway I figured the center would be better because it would make it easier to get in the container and easier to hang, I think it turned out pretty cool, when I need a piece of tissue just reach up and pull down..

Thanks,
I put the shops ladder to use today too, we had a nasty little storm blow through! I looked up the weather and it said possable t-storms with winds as high as 20mph, yet it wasn’t rain it was hail, then the winds were blowing sideways and we get a warning with winds as high as 80mph, all of a sudden a branch flys by the front window like OMG! I opened the front door and can’t even get out,, it was nasty! Yet only for about 15min cause then all of a sudden it was and still is sunny out! I spoke to our neighbor to check to see if he’s ok cause his chimney was leaking last storm, but all was ok and 2hrs later I finally was able to get home after the Mrs yelled over the fence twice asking for me to come home.. but got the ladder out to get that one nasty branch off the roof then grabbed the other branches pulled around back, so things look better and are in good shape.. still need to trim the branches down to firepit size but that can wait..

Do you coat both surfaces and let it go tacky before sticking them together?  Make sure it's well clamped while it sets too.

I'll bet Sparky's got loads of old smurf heavy things in his garage he uses to weight his down. ;)

I started it but got about 5 steps into it before something came up, but here’s how it comes, you have to go piece by piece, then fold or shape each, then interconnect each by a very little tab that gets twisted or folded after slid into a small slot on the other piece..

Hey Rob, this is my little setup for the metal earths, I took a small tray from the dollar store and got creative, I punched holes both at top and bottom with a pioneerX awl, then ran zip ties, but the center one took a bic ink pen, cut it to size and ran the zip tie through it so it wouldn’t collapse it. Then dropped the tools in, I guess I should find or make something to hold the tweezers screwdrivers and other pen like tools upward. I have a bunch more but those are the mostly used for the metal earths..

The little guys been after me to get these things up and running, I told him we’re not working on the gas one, but I did have one that I bought like 12yrs ago that’s like new and one a friend gave me that is like 40yrs old. The newer one pretty much just needs battery’s, but that other needs some TLC!! I think he’s after these because he’s in robotic, but he says he’s been after me for years
Ive been so interested in that old one because look at it, what do you see? Yeah it’s 4wd, ok but look at the wheels, a little out of alignment? Yeah it’s 4ws(steering) and to top it off you see that silver strip from front to back, yeah it’s a chain, that’s how it moves! Not T-bones, or gears but a chain, weird? So now the little guys got a nice table and chairs, well bench up in his room to do hobbies and I think we’ve got a very interesting project ahead of us!

Nice Dewalt too, I had the xr model before that - it was a beast! What do you think of the metal chuck - good isn't it?  :tu:
Title: Re: Shop projects

 :salute:

Yes I always go for the metal chuck, I've learnt my lesson in the past the plastic ones get chewed up
They are cunning with the pictures in their adds they sometimes look like metal but are not  :twak:

In the last few years where I was working we had a bonus scheme, mine got invested in the new Dewillt range
I was very pissed when the new range of batteries didn't fit my old ones  :twak:
So I started out using my old tools at home and the new ones at work, but I had too many chargers, batteries, tools etc so it got confusing
(+ a bosch strimmer and a no name circular saw) swapping things out of different toolboxes.....

In the end I gave all my old Dewillt tools (and there was a lot) to a young Mate for use in his workshop/garage
The tools were good, the old batteries were 'OK' but you needed to leave them in the chargers all the time for when you wanted to use them

(And my Bosch strimmer now runs off a dewillt batteries  ;) )

So I'm in a happy place with my battery drills now  :D

MTMatt posted a picture of a box that reminded me of this project

Do you remember back in may 2015?
Well I had bought this big old tool box off fleabay to make a pirates chest for a little lad but was then told that it would be too big  ::)
(https://beta-static.photobucket.com/images/n184/sparky_415/2015/DSC02391.jpg) (https://beta.photobucket.com/u/sparky_415/p/a2880b15-da7e-48bf-80c5-f92117b1362a)

I decide I need a new bedside cabinet
So I start & stop many times depending of how it's going (which accounts for the different varnishes and finishes), years pass untill the end of last year I finish it (Yep OK  but I like rustic!  :P ) Reclaimed wood top an bottom

Here it is in use
Plug the cabinet in to a socket and you have a double socket with integral USB charging
Plug a table light in to the right hand socket, it is then switched/dimmed by touching the brass plaque top outside right side of the unit
Inside top left is a magnet for the little knife I made 30 years ago

Yes, I made it from basic building lumber from Home Depot, 4x4, 2x3, and 3/4 inch pine. I made a toolbox and a coffee table from the scraps from the table. I have a little more to do on the coffee table. I will post a pic when I am done. The Dexter Russel lino knife was a dollar flea market find. It was rusted mess with a rounded tip and chewed up handle. I know to much work for a twelve dollar knife. ;-)

I was looking for a lap table and they were a fortune, and to top it off very small, so I bought a nice piece of wood, cut it to fit perfect, then stained it, the came up with an idea after i worked on a model, the models I work on are all metal, and all the pieces come in a few flat pads (you got to cut them out and form them) and since the recliners a little pitched, I used the router and plunged four holes from the bottom, dropped in a magnet in each, then used hot glue to fill each one, and since the model pieces are very small I ran a piece of paracord around the bottom so if anything slides it catches, all for cheap rather then expensive, plus ever so comfortable sitting in the recliner! Just put the tools off to the side! Here’s a few pics,,

After watching countless hours of putty knife restorations, I was ready to restore one myself. But after seeing the ridiculous shipping prices on eBay I decided that I would have to buy localy. It was settled, localy it was. But the putty knives I'd found were in no need of TLC. They were NOS (New Old Stock), and were a better buy than older beat up ones. In that moment I realised that I could make one myself!! But as usual it took me ages to gather the willingness to produce one. After watching a rehandling by YouTuber 357magdad, I knew that I could not waste more time. And so this journey began...

Reclaimed wood from a "cake stand" (no idea what they're called), parts were filled with bugs, used my Stanley nº4 to taper and clean up the sides. The tenon was cut with a chisel to fit a 15mm copper connector that was cut in half.
(https://i.postimg.cc/9rZYkwtB/PK1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/9rZYkwtB)

A better look at the tenon. A hole was drilled and a slot was cut with a hacksaw. The slot is then carved into the handle with a modified hacksaw blade.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BLR2YJjy/PK2.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BLR2YJjy)

An old saw blade is cut and shaped to form the blade of the putty knife. Later decided to add the taper you see marked with a sharpie marker.
(https://i.postimg.cc/ZvkyPjgz/PK3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ZvkyPjgz)

Decided against the round shoulders and went for straight 90º. The tang was also filed a little more, enlarging the slot was more difficult than making the tang narrower.
(https://i.postimg.cc/N5krT6kZ/PK4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/N5krT6kZ)

Finished product with the copper "ferrule" in place. I reckon that I could use a reduction to get a little bit of a radius on the top of the ferrule.
(https://i.postimg.cc/hXCzZKwr/PK5.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hXCzZKwr)

Backside of the handle. I did not apply any finish as I may change my mind regarding the handle shape.
(https://i.postimg.cc/T5Xp51LR/PK6.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/T5Xp51LR)

Sorry for the bad photos and the unnecessarily long windedness!

Pretty cool. Btw hello Steve  :pok: :pok:
Although I would not have made it a flat bottom boat.

Although I would not have made it a flat bottom boat.

Flat-bottom hulls, they make the rockin' boats go 'round...

Due to some unfortunate purchasing of a TV walls setup we ended up with on made for buildings with a smaller distance between the joist in the wall. Thus it needs to be fastened to something than spans wide enough to hang it up. I thought that would be a nice little project to test a new toy I got some time ago on sale, and maybe add some pictures here in the process.

So I started with a leftover piece of 3mm steel sheet that happened to be suitable wide but too long. So it had to be cut, and I get to try my new toy.

1. So the new little toy is a, eh, something, that mounts on the angle grinder. It serves three purposes - gather dust via the vacuum coupling, having a straight edge to follow for straight cuts, and a cut depth setting. I try to avoid doing much inside that spreads dust in general, and metal dust in particular, so this is a nice little addition. It worked very well - very little escaped from that test cut.

2. After that I got to try another new addition, a small 125mm angle grinder, to just clean up all the edges and round the corners. Note the narrow grip compared to the other angle grinder - this one is very easy to grip.

3. The old steel sheet had a lot of character and rusty patina. It is to be spray painted later so at least the rust have to go. Some steel brushing does that just fine.

4. This needs to hang on the wall so some holes will be needed. Some marking tools are good to locate those.

Next is putting the actual TV hanger on and finding a sensible position for it.

5. The TV hanger.
6. Using a distance tool to place it 1cm from the top edge, and in the middle lengthwise.
7. When in the right spot make some marks for where the holes to secure this position should be.
8. Making some quick holes with a hydraulic punching tool.

9. Holes made - going on the prepare for welding.
10. Removing paint and patina in the areas that will later be welded.
11. Cleaning up the same areas with acetone.

(An important note on acetone by the way is that is self-ignites quite easily - thus the paper or rag used need to be dispersed of safely in a fireproof bin or soaked in water.)

I was going to do the actual welding too, but that hit a stumbling block. It is -12 degree Celsius in the workshop, and the welding machine refuse to cooperate at that temperature. So I've turned on some heat and hopefully the machine will warm up enough to finish this later.

After a few hours the workshop was warm enough for the welding machine to operate properly. So:

12. Preparing for welding. The screws and clamps hold the TV holder in the right position and contribute to minimize welding distortions.
13. Welding pretty much done. The edges of the TV holder was quite rounded so it took more heat than anticipated to get in those nooks. So some paint melted off here and there. No worries as long as it kept away from the actual weld areas.
14. Finished with welding and removed clamps and screws. Later on the welds will be cleaned up and the bottom area spray painted matte black similar to the rest.
15. Just a curiosity for those who haven't seen one: A welding stool. It can be tipped in three positions giving different sitting heights. Simple and great!

Hope someone found it remotely interesting :)

By the power invested in me by heat, electrons, and the mighty Fronius, I declare the parts joined in lowly welding. (Until something do them part).

I so wish I could weld, I mean I can, I’ve done my share on cars, I like stick, but I just can’t now because of my seizures, I can’t be around the flashing lights! That one project I did from parts which was a recumbent trike from like 4 bikes all I used was nut and bolt, grinder and drill, that thing would have been soooo much better welded! Here’s a video the Mrs took when I was testing it out,,

That cycle looks good. I can imagine how welding would make it easier though.

I have machines for a few different welding processes for metal and few of them flashes much as such. Dirty base materials/ rust/ paint and whatnot will misbehave but they shouldn't be in a good weld in the first place.

Stick welding - random flashes and sparks.
MIG welding - less random flashes and sparks, but still there.
TIG weldiing - no random flashes or sparks, a single continuous light with turn on and off and intensity under your control.
Gas welding - similar to TIG welding.
Resistance welding - literally done in a single flash in a fraction of a second. I usually just close my eyes and fire. (If the weld itself is covered you can't even see the flash).
(There are many others too, but I don't have those).

Then there is brazing as opposed to welding - the filler additive melts, but the base metals don't. The process has some advantages and disadvantages compared to welding. As a mad plumbarian you likely know it very well already. (I think some bikes are built like that rather than with welding?) Two options I find interesting is the option to braze using induction coils or high temperature ovens - the temperature makes the additive melt but not so high that the base materials get soft. (The base material can still have all kinds of reactions to being heated and cooled, but that might be for better and worse).

I'd like to try brazing with an oven or inductive coils, but so far I haven't had an excuse to spend time exploring - I imagine a sturdy setups and repeated failures will take more time and money than than justifiable for what I typically do.
