It seems like now days, the younger generations graduate high school or college and never pick up a book again. It's all about social media and blogs. No one has the desire to read a book for mere pleasure anymore. So, in order to defeat a social norm, I wanted to share something from one of my personal favorite books and I hope to see some excerpts from you all as well.
"Beauty comforts. There is something profoundly healing about it. Have you ever wondered why we send flowers to the bereaved? In the midst of their suffering and loss, only a gift of beauty says enough, or says it right... Only beauty helped. There's a touching story told from the hospitals of WWII, where a young and badly wounded soldier was brought in from a hellish week of fighting. After doing what she could for him, the nurse asked if there was anything else she could do. "Yes," he said. "Could you just put on some lipstick while I watch?" Beauty comforts. It soothes the soul."

I used to read a lot of poetry (along with History, Archaeology etc...) Here's some favs that always made me think...
The Second Coming
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
W. B. Yeats
"Ozymandias"
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Percy Bysshe Shelley

I read a lot of books, and I love it. I especially enjoy it when the house is empty, and I am not disturbed by voices

Bad news everyone, Detron hears voices...
About the poetry, I don't read much poetry either.

Ah, books. I'm an avid reader, I'd rather be reading than watching TV. Right now I'm in the middle of To Kill a Mockingbird. Such a beautifully written book, one of my absolute favorites. :tu:

I remember reading that in high school and hated it. Lol but I fell in love with The Great Gatsby. I've read it several times. I'm curious to see what inspires the rest of you all. I'm impressed with the poems SAK Guy posted.

I read constantly, mainly non-fiction. History, travel, science in about that order.

I hated Gatsby. I thought it was an overrated piece of crap. I didn't hate it as much as The Scarlet Letter though. That steaming literary pile is the one book in high school that I flat out refused to finish. >:( My favorite novel is Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. I fell in love with it about 20 pages in. Another classic that I absolutely love is Candide by Voltaire. Such a fun book that has a great point. :)

speaking of Hemingway -- The Old Man and the Sea is another one of my favorites. :)

I “always” have a book as part of my EDC. :) Some of what I read is no point in sharing here, as probably isn't available in English, but much of what I read is English because books in English are cheap and have such a great variety. I read Marcus Aurelius' Meditations recently, and I really recommend it to everyone. Even if you have no taste for the Stoic world view, it's worth reading just to view how well reflected and utterly modern many of the thoughts of this probably very hard man were. (Roman emperor? I really wouldn't like to meet any of them in a dark back alley...) (You can also say, “How little we have progressed,” I guess. Your choice. :) )

It's pretty grim in spots. We read it in a an early American Lit course so we were dissecting every aspect. Looking at it like that, it was an interesting work. Fav Hemingway work, The Sun Also Rises.

I don't spend as much time with books as I'd like, but I do enjoy reading. I'll have to ponder for a while before submitting choice extracts

“But for what purpose was the earth formed?" asked Candide. "To drive us mad," replied Martin.”
-Voltaire, Candide
Such a great and truthful quote. :D

And on a related topic...and forgive me if I don't get the quote word for word
There is a theory that if the question(to the Ulitmate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything),and the Answer(42) exist at the same place,at the same time, the Universe will be instantly destroyed, and be replaced with something even more confusing.
The is another theory that states this has already happened

though i did not memorize it, when I read "Starship Troopers" I was amazed by how many great quotes I heard from the History and Moral Philosophy teacher
other quotes I did like were

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. Love those Barnes & Noble's classics- not the greatest binding, but they look good and they are priced right.
I grew up reading, no one remembers when I started. I'll read the ketchup bottle if there is nothing else. I have hardcover, paper backs of all sizes, but I'll admit that half of what I read now is on my phone or my kindle. That being said, mostly I make a annual donation to Guetenburg and read classics.

that is how I feel about them. I am super careful and protective of my books, even paperbacks I buy at Goodwill.
When I was in the Navy, I had an old monochromatic Palm Pilot. I read ebooks on it. (space was a premium on a ship)
I do read on my phone and tablet, but also enjoy a physical book.

Its up there in the pile on top of the first tall book case. Also Atkinson's 'The Guns at Last Light'. Excellent books.
I'm going to have to look into that one. :tu: Right now I'm reading A Bridge too Far again after having seen the movie the other day.....

'Guns at Last Light' is the third in Atkinson's 'Liberation Trilogy'. Start with 'An Army at Dawn'.

I'll leave a quote, too :)
“Another thing that got forgotten was the fact that against all probability a sperm whale had suddenly been called into existence several miles above the surface of an alien planet.
And since this is not a naturally tenable position for a whale, this poor innocent creature had very little time to come to terms with its identity as a whale before it then had to come to terms with not being a whale any more.
This is a complete record of its thoughts from the moment it began its life till the moment it ended it.
Ah … ! What’s happening? it thought.
Er, excuse me, who am I?
Hello?
Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?
What do I mean by who am I?
Calm down, get a grip now … oh! this is an interesting sensation, what is it? It’s a sort of … yawning, tingling sensation in my … my … well I suppose I’d better start finding names for things if I want to make any headway in what for the sake of what I shall call an argument I shall call the world, so let’s call it my stomach.
Good. Ooooh, it’s getting quite strong. And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound going past what I’m suddenly going to call my head? Perhaps I can call that … wind! Is that a good name? It’ll do … perhaps I can find a better name for it later when I’ve found out what it’s for. It must be something very important because there certainly seems to be a hell of a lot of it. Hey! What’s this thing? This … let’s call it a tail – yeah, tail. Hey! I can can really thrash it about pretty good can’t I? Wow! Wow! That feels great! Doesn’t seem to achieve very much but I’ll probably find out what it’s for later on. Now – have I built up any coherent picture of things yet?
No.
Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to, I’m quite dizzy with anticipation …
Or is it the wind?
There really is a lot of that now isn’t it?
And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like … ow … ound … round … ground! That’s it! That’s a good name – ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?
And the rest, after a sudden wet thud, was silence.
Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.”
― Douglas Adams (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/4.Douglas_Adams), The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (http://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/3078186)
I love reading, always did, though lately I found I get distracted too easily, somehow. :(

Some good reading there.

I frequent second hand bookstores. It's like treasure hunting. Last month i got an electrical engineer's handbook for 8 bucks. Brand new books cost a ton but the rate for second hand is great!

I built 90% of a caomplete Stephen King collection from second hand stores. I frequent them all the time.

Definitely, even though I'm not a real book reader like the wife, she'll have two books done in a week, although I did read "nothing lasts forever"(the original die hard) in a month, I'm on "58 minutes" (the 2nd die hard) but I'm only on chapter 7 out of 41!

I am another who always has a book with me in my EDC bag. Lately it has been the works of Louis L'Amour. I am trying to build a complete collection from used book stores so it keeps the cost down. One of my all time favorite books though is a collection of stories by Joseph Conrad. I've had and replaced several copies since my college days.
From Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness."
“One evening coming in with a candle I was startled to hear him say a little tremulously, ‘I am lying here in the dark waiting for death.’ The light was within a foot of his eyes. I forced myself to murmur, ‘Oh, nonsense!’ and stood over him as if transfixed. “Anything approaching the change that came over his features I have never seen before, and hope never to see again. Oh, I wasn’t touched. I was fascinated. It was as though a veil had been rent. I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror—of an intense and hopeless despair. Did he live his life again in every detail of desire, temptation, and surrender during that supreme moment of complete knowledge? He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision—he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath:
“‘The horror! The horror!’"

The wife's a bookworm, and she used to have a book collection and would litterly have one on her at all times, but then I bought her one of those electronic ones which I think was one of the most important buys I've ever given her! Don't get me wrong she actually knows and talks to two authors, one in which sent her two real books I think signed and another one who keeps buying her the electric ones.

Wow. Those books are beautiful!

Nice. What's in the Classic Horror Stories collection?
-
Also - major bookworm here. I don't go anywhere without a book. Set myself a goal of 65 books this year and (just about) on target! I have a Kindle too which has upped my reading but I still prefer a physical copy.

I have hundreds (yup, as in 100x) of comic's albums and magazines and novels/books. There's nothing like flipping through the pages of a real book, sensing the paper textures and the smell and the indent the press as made in the pages.

Here's my very little collection,
JR
The Bourne identity, the first book to the series,,
Die hard with a vengeance, I'm not sure of this one, it's probably literly the movie,
58 minutes, the second book of the die Hard series, the one at the airport, so far I'm not far enough in to say anything..
Nothing lasts forever, what started the die hard movie, a bit twisted compared to the movie but very good!

Spent a great day at the Hay Festival on Sunday - if you've not heard of it, it's a literary festival which takes place in the Welsh "town of books", Hay-on-Wye. I went to a couple of talks - Jon Gower speaking to Bill Bailey about his new book on British Birds, and I also saw Andrew O' Hagan speak with Robert Plant and Kent Nerburn about Nerburn's book "Neither Wolf nor Dog", about his experiences travelling with a native American elder in the 1990s. The book sounds absolutely fantastic, and Nerburn was passionate when he spoke about the native elders' way of life - I can't wait to read it!
My current and recent reading:
Current:
Some Will Not Sleep: Selected Horrors by Adam Nevill
Sum by David Eagleman
Recent:
The four books of the Space Odyssey series by Arthur C. Clarke

J.J. Slauerhoff, definitely my favorite author. His collected works go with me whenever I go on vacation (which isn't too often :().
I would qualify the language he uses in his novellas and short stories as poetry in prose. The man has a way with words like no writer before or after him.

Webster’s New International Dictionary (second edition, 1934)
"Webster's Second" redirects here. For Daniel Webster's "Second Reply to Hayne", see Webster–Hayne debate.
In 1934, the New International Dictionary was revised and expanded for a second edition, which is popularly known as Webster’s Second or W2, although it was not published under that title. It was edited by William Allan Neilson and Thomas A. Knott. It contained 3350 pages and sold for $39.50. Some versions added a 400-page supplement called A Reference History of the World, which provided chronologies "from earliest times to the present". The editors claimed more than 600,000 entries, more than any other dictionary at that time, but that number included many proper names and newly added lists of undefined "combination words". Multiple definitions of words are listed in chronological order, with the oldest, and often obsolete, usages listed first. For example, the first definition of starve includes dying of exposure to the elements as well as from lack of food.
The numerous picture plates added to the book's appeal and usefulness, particularly when pertaining to things found in nature. Conversely, the plate showing the coins of the world's important nations quickly proved to be ephemeral. Numerous gold coins from various important countries were included, including American eagles, at a time when it had recently become illegal for Americans to own them, and when most other countries had withdrawn gold from active circulation as well.
Early printings of this dictionary contained the famous dord.
Because of its style and word coverage, Webster's Second is still a popular dictionary. For example, in the case of Miller Brewing Co. v. G. Heileman Brewing Co., Inc., 561 F.2d 75 (7th Cir. 1977)[20] – a trademark dispute in which the terms "lite" and "light" were held to be generic for light beer and therefore available for use by anyone – the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, after considering a definition from Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, wrote that "[T]he comparable definition in the previous, and for many the classic, edition of the same dictionary is as follows:..."

That is an amazing looking book i would love a copy. I used to have large modern dictionary. But when i discovered they had started putting celebrities in there like Eminem and Tracy Emin I got rid of it out of principle

I think I had that dictionary, well not that exact one but it was the same size!

Ibsen's An Enemy of the People in counterpoint to his own Brand. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations in cointerpoint to Chekhov's Ward No. 6. Point and counterpoint to truth and stoicism, truly great reads and plays. Best if you're middle aged or older, I suspect, but I found An Enemy of the People hilarious as a young man as well.

I picked up another one of these massive beauties for $5 at Half Priced Books. it is a version without the Reference history, but a really cool addition

I found another one of these dictionaries. it is exactly the same version as the one pictured, but this one is done on India Paper. it is much thinner. I paid $10 for it

I am very happy to have found a complete set of the "Great Books of the Western World" (First version that ran from 1952 until 1990). there are 54 books that contain about 500 works. 50 of the 54 volumes in the set I bought were still in the plastic. my set is from 1984. I scored this mint set for $50. that is a steal for this set. an estimated page count would be 35,000. the books are dense as far as the text goes, with the iliad and the odyssey together in one book that is about half an inch wide. this set is about five foot wide.

Now that I have this set, I am working on getting a set of "Harvard Classics" If by chance you have the set or individual volumes to sell or trade for, let me know.
