Title: Is this really CASE?
Post by: Aloha on February 11, 2019, 06:54:43 PM
Picked up this nice steak knife  :dunno: for $1 plus a decent sheath.  The marking on the blade is weird .  The wood is really actually quite nice in person and the blade sharpened up very nice.  I used it as a paring knife and it did great.  Likely gonna be my steak knife so it doesn't' really matter if it really is a Case knife.  Mostly curious.

Yes, it is a Case....I have an 8" Case kitchen knife with the following printed on the blade:

         CAP 283-8"                          PROCESS PAT
CASE XX STAINLESS                  NO.  2147079

It is the top one in the picture. The bottom one is a Craftsman 9" blade kitchen knife made by CASE for Craftsman.

Interesting that it differs in two respects to the other examples namely 3 rivets rather than 2 and more strangely Case’s rather than Case like it was made by someone for Case maybe.

I initially thought CutCo.  It was interesting since it says Case's Stainless steel.  Its a good little slicer and the guy had it in a sheath as if he carried it that way.  I'll use it for steak as it was probably intended.  The wood as I say is pretty nice.

Case currently makes kitchen cutlery with 3 rivets. I don't know when they switched to 3 rivets.....the two knives I have belonged to my parents and are probably at least 40 years old...My dad bought them new.

Here are some charts with Case Tang Stamps....if you look at the one for Hunting knives you will see that they used CASE'S STAINLESS from 1945-1955, so your knife might be from that period.

Branded and sold by Case, but possibly made by Robinson?  W.R. Case was one of their founders, and their knives also have two rivets.   They are no longer USA made, but were up until the 1990s.  I have a couple paring knives by them, and they're pretty good.

Case had a full range lineup for years.  I had no idea until I visited the factory museum.
