Title: Who carries a backpack everyday?
Post by: MadPlumbarian on April 21, 2016, 07:25:14 PM
I want to say I brought this up long ago but I didn't see it. I carry a sling and it's getting to be a pain, everytime I get in and out of a car I got to take my hat off and stretch it over my head, and over time that strap keeps pulling and it hurts even with a nice pad. So I figured maybe a small backpack would be better? Anyway I've been looking for idk how long cause what I'm after I just can't find, I need the Molle to hook everything on, but something flat on the front so I can put as many patches I could(gotta have my mto) anyway, I thought some people put more Molle attachments and don't even use the backpack, someone else agreed, I thought a simple panel covered in Molle rows and with a messenger bag cover would be awsome, just couldn't find anything I liked and what I did was way exspencive! But lastnight while looking around idk how it came up but I was looking at hydro backpacks, very narrow, very thin and covered in Molle straps, so the flashlight, Multitool, fak, and water bottle and all go on the sides and make it close to a normal backpack. and yet with a storage compartment where the water bag would be, and with all the Molle on the front I could put other junk on or make a Velcro panel and put all patches?

So I was just wondering who else uses a backpack everyday, and what type, here's the one I was looking at, it's soo upgradable in so many way.

I don't carry a bag at all.  I'd imagine the weight of the bag moreso that anything is a huge factor.  Can you lighten the load on your current set up?

That being said I would imagine distributing the weight evenly onto both shoulders would help that or BUILD your TRAPs

The load is only 5-7lbs, it's not much. Heck, I remember way back in highschool my backpack was like 30lbs and I had no prob riding a bike or walking..

 :pok:

That weight concentrated on that one area over any length of time will began to annoy/hurt/ or otherwise cause discomfort.

A bag that would spread the weight would be better but I dare say over time you will be feeling the discomfort on both shoulders rather that just the one.

Maybe a waist attachment point?  Now the load could be distributed over several areas.

Oh come on, that was back in teen days, 100lbs on one shoulder would have felt fine!

HAHAHA especially when I still see kids as young as 10 lugging around these monster bags.

I meant the 5-7lb bag you currently have can still cause discomfort.  That weight on the muscles and nerves is concentrated and over time cause the problems.

I know I'm of no help whatsoever, sorry.  I just don't think a dual strap bag is the answer honestly.

A hydratation backpak, with my things and lunch.

I took off the hydratation bag and I had a 8 liters of capacity bakcpack

Slim profile, urban style, with compression and waist straps. I can run for the bus with it.

Very very light (520g). I don´t understand how people carry that tactical monsters so heavy.

My shoulder and back pains had vanisehd (I used a messenger bag)

I am an urban guy. Don´t need camo Maxpedition trolleys

This what I have been using for the past 5+ years and very happy with it. I liked this so much I gifted them to my nieces when they started college.

Pros...
Waist and Sternum straps(with a built in whistle) keeps it tight when I ride my bicycle or motorcycle. Very light and lots of compartments inside and outside to organize what you carry.  Has a padded laptop sleeve too. I carry my fruit snacks inside and they do not get squashed because of it's shape.

Cons...
Unfortunately it is not patch or badge friendly and I don't think they make these any more. Also not easy to store when not in use or when packing into a tight space like when going on vacation in a tightly packed car :(

This is my before bag, I just think it's just waay to big, I pretty much completly closed off the main compartment, put two very thin things in the second compartment, and only used those two front compartments along with putting things on the sides of it.

I carry one to work every day.  I keep a knee brace, gum, Advil, Tums and headphones in it all the time.  It has plenty of room to carry my thermos and lunch, and additional clothing for the colder months.

I think the hydration pack without the bladder is a brilliant solution to your problem. I have a hydration pack I hardly ever use and I think I may try it out as an EDC bag.

Let me know how it turns out, I have one but it's hydration only, or add on hydration. It wouldn't work for what I'm after.. Kinda sucks cause it's a nice pack too..

I carry a North Face Surge now. I carry a lot of crap and the bag is almost "too organized," has way too many small pockets and zippers for items that don't fit too well. And I wish i could remove the waist strap, it rides above my belly button when in use.

But it is by far the most comfortable backpack I have ever used. Out of the 17 backpacks i have tried, it feels the best. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160517/177512c611ad777056d53c7ed8b2f98f.jpg)
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160517/72494d0dc6770d7570eff507b3cb9efe.jpg) Like this, but all red in the front.

The color is hard to find, i think this bag was a transition from the Surge 1 to the Surge 2. It has the coloration of a Surge 2 but the front pocket of a Surge 1.
You can see it in the background, I carry a random assortment of odd things, a hammock, fishing kit, spotlight, mini sledge, waterproof speaker, and tent stakes. Plus all the normal EDC Goodies.

Post by: MadPlumbarian on May 17, 2016, 05:33:58 AM
Why can't you remove the waist strap? Heck if it's that bad just cut it off and burn the ends so they don't fray.. Or if your worried that maybe you'll want it back on in the future, cut it leaving about an inch and burn it, this way you can overlap and stich it back on?

I know that one bag I've had my eyes on for a while has just simple straps and a waist, and well, I'll need padded straps, which I think I have and can simply replace the ones that come with it since the bag has those weave threw thingys on it..

Slings

Wenger: Slightly larger than the Vic one. A bit slippery on the back but has some neat compartments in the outer compartment.

Victorinox: This one sits much better on the back. But the outer compartment is all wrong and has no organizing stuff.

While I don't carry a rucksack every day any more, when I do need one it's normally this small Wenger one.  I really like the fact it's got a stow-away waist strap, so when doing something active you can secure it tightly, but for more casual use you can get rid of the annoying straps hanging down.

Ok, the one pic in the top left is what it was before I did anything,, it was a nice bag but just way to big.. So, I did a little cutting, stitch ripping, and then sewing back up! Two days later and that's what I ended up with, I didn't want anything big, but if when I'm out I find something, I can take the zipper and run it around the pack and it will give it another 4" and make it about the size of a normal size pack.. Still got to do some customizing, zipper pulls, more Velcro for patches, and some other things, but at least all the hard craps done..

Thanks, it did seam like a nice bag, I just never got to using it cause it was so big. As far as the mod you can see the bag on the bag in the top left pic, I pretty much just took the middle section out and trimmed the back and extension to size, the one thing I thought of doing is there's a little compartment for a water bladder and moving the zipper to make it like a secret compartment, but after so many hrs of stress I said screw it and just closed it up. But I still have the zipper and it's still possible..  >:D

I would like to carry a backpack daily, but it is not practical for me.  For one, I work at home from a laptop at my kitchen table.  I guess I could wear a backpack while sitting here, but my Mrs. Powernoodle might give me the stink eye.  I also do not find it practical to carry a Man Sack while out and about.  I carry enough essentials in my pocket and on my belt - MT/SAK, light, Sharpie, small pistol, spare mag, phone, etc.  If I commuted to work, I would definitely EDC a bag.

I do keep a Maxpedition Mongo in my vehicle, and carry it to church and other occasions.  Its more of a convenience bag, containing an Anker battery, phone charger, note pad, pens, zip ties, Tums/Advil/Imodium. small FAK for boo boos and bleeders, MT, pepper spray, Nalgene bottle (Hibiscus tea), larger pistol with spare mags, etc.  From time to time, it gets too heavy and I have to thin the herd and start over.  Carrying a roll of Gorilla tape, a pair of sweet Knipex plier/wrenches, etc. is fun, but the weight adds up quickly.

I own 3x large tupperware containers crammed full of Maxpedition and 5.11 Man Sacks, bags and accessories.  But the Mongo fits my current requirements most closely.

I hear you, I'm at home 95%, and the Mrs. Also gives me that look.. I also wear a boonie hat and very light weight long sleeve over shirt in summer, so I don't get toasted, and since there both tan I get made fun of since I look like Indiana jones, since he carries a bag..
I used to carry everything in pocket or sheath since I didn't have a bag, but now the pockets and belt are lighted since I don't carry as much, and with a backpack or shoulder bag you can just stash everything in.. The bag I was using isn't that full but for some reason it was just pulling on the neck and it sucked having to take it off/on every time getting in/out of the car since wearing a hat and having to stretch it over, And with a backpack it doesn't have to go over head! The one I just made is about 11" wide, 15" tall but only about 2-1/2" deep, that is until you extend it, then it makes it about 6" deep.. This way it will hold my normal must haves, fak, multitools, flashlights, Rx's, and other goodies, yet if we stop somewhere and get something and I don't feel like carrying it, we'll make the bag bigger and toss it in.. Plus having a larger flat front face so I can put more Velcro on(what I'm working on) and can put more pins and patches on it! Gotta show my support for mt.o!

I carry an Under Armour Storm. 30.7 liter size ( 18" x 13" x 8")Plenty of room for my tablet, a notebook, a spare pair of pants, my spare Leatherman and SAK, small surefire 60, two 32 oz (1liter each) Nalgene water bottles, sunglasses, ace bandage, a baseball hat around the top handle, lunch, snacks, and various extras. 10 to 20 pounds depending, I guess. Sometimes I bike the 9 miles to work each way, and it does fine.

I single strap it, but obviously have the option of 2 strapping - better overall for the back.

Back in the day I carried a currier sling bag. Those are fine but you should swap shoulders periodically

I EDC a Maxpedition Fatboy Versapack S-Type (the left-side carry version, being that I'm left handed).

I got a Jumbo Versipack first, and it was just too big.

I have a backpack in my car for emergencies, a High Sierra Cirque 30, I think.

But when I need a general use light backpack, I go for a green Jansport Ready pack. That thing is straight up indestructible. And should it ever fail, they replace them. Lifetime Warrantee.

Even tho Lynn busted my chops for my murse, I dont carry a bag at all.  I find them much to cumbersome.  I tried hard to convince myself to try.  I have a sling bag and put some items in it but I just cannot bring myself to use it everyday.  Back in the day tho I did rock a bum bag.

GORUCK GR1 rucksack works well for me for office and travel. Perfect size for stashing underneath the airplane seat and doesn’t look too tactical but still has a bit of molle. Great warranty but I will say because of the tougher material they use it is slightly heavier than most back packs.

Expensive, but if you sign up on their site and check it regularly they have special sales. That’s how I got mine. They have other packs of different sizes too.

But I hear you about a sling pack. I had one from Maxpedition and when fully loaded hurt my shoulder.

I carry one every day of you consider going from house to truck to a different house or business and back to house carrying?
I need Windows PC with an actual Serial Port and a Mac all the time for service along with a tiny HDMI monitor and some other pricey doodads so I carry them in and out every day unless I forget.

Most recently I have been carrying the Evade for more than a year and it is about perfect for my needs and light enough to not hamper me actually carrying through airports as needed.
Great really well made bag with good organization AND Bottle Pockets that really work for bottles!

I use mine as more of a backup  in a spare truck and don't really have it loaded up completely yet but it is a nice bag overall for sure.
I like how wide open it can get and lay flat and even loaded up still feels pretty light weight overall.

Love the Camo too!

I carry a Swiss Gear pack that has room for my laptop. And I carry minimal gear with me. I don't carry it everywhere. I'm retired so it's in my car when I'm out and by my chair at home. I have a car bag that stays in the car 24/7 that is basically "get home" stuff that can be added to my backpack if needed.

Unfortunately we don’t drive, when I did I had one of those huge black/yellow totes filled with half all tools/stuff needed for the vehicle, the other half everything needed for safety and stuff needed for the driver. But since that’s out of question it’s kinda down to a backpack, at least the only fluid is water rather then steering fluid, oil, and radiator fluid..
Anyway I said a while back that I was working on another, I showed a pic of it when I first got it and it was huge! So I kinda did a few things and here’s what I came up with,
It’s not a bad size and as you can see, if while out and we pick up anything I don’t feel like carrying and it doesn’t fit in the bag, the bag expands and doubles the room in it to allow for larger items. Of course since I came up with this I have yet to need it, so I’ve still looked into something smaller, kinda like one of those hydration packs, something with the Molle strips so I can add items to the outside, but as you can see I still need Velcro on the face of it so I can have my patches..

I'm just wondering if it will be small on me. I'm about 6'5 280lbs.  My Sitka kits well as a sling. Sometimes I pack it just a little too heavy and the sling needs to be a backpack.

Well for someone that tall I’d say it would be a good size backpack, I was kinda happy with my sling but it was a tad bit small, that and taking it off in order to get in a car I had to take the hat off, stretch it over the head, put the hat back on, then throw the bag, rather then just slip the shoulder straps off. The other thing was the face of the sling didn’t have enough room to put all the patches I wanted..

I could go with something like these just something simple and square, only downer for those two are the shoulder straps, absolutely no padding, that other one is like perfect but I’m not paying like $300 for a simple backpack! What’s so special idk, it’s a medical bag and you would think for that price you’d get all the first aid stuff..
My only dislike besides the shoulder straps on those other two which you can replace with something with padding is they don’t expand or have any other pockets, yet there covered in Molle, so attaching other pouches would kinda compensate, yet the main compartment isn’t to big, kinda like mine but doesn’t expand..

I catch the bus to work and home again every day so all my junk I need for the daily grind is in one of these cheap military style packs.

Maybe my thinking is simple minded, but the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle has always worked for me. You mention getting in and out of the car and knocking your hat off. Obviously you are not in the 'take everything with me now' backpack until the end of the day mode. So my question is this..."What do you need to take with you from the car, how far from the car and for how long?". In a pair of cargo shorts, t-shirt and water shoes I can still take: leatherman, measuring tape, 10x lens cleaners, safety pins, extendable magnet (I'm to lazy to bend over to pick something up), eye glass repair kit, duct tape, twenty feet of paracord, 2x 3"x5" notebooks, 2x mechanical pencils, a Kobalt screwdriver set with 4' extension and 2x 12 ea set of bits, flashlight (keyring style 1x AAA), fingernail clippers, strike stick and a pen. All of which fits into my EDC pouch on my left hip. I really do not have a screaming MUST HAVE for these items. They are my 'I feel better having them' items that come in handy and then someone will say something like "That's pretty neat that you have that with you.".  The pouch has MOLLE webbing so it can be attached to a larger bag if need for other occasions. Then there is the other leatherman on my belt, the Sig Sauer P238 micro in my pocket, wallet, keys with three different OPMT's (One Piece Multi Tool) (attached to belt), handkerchief, utility blade (normal) and utility blade (serrated) (Home Depot) that are clipped into my cargo shorts pockets. For me this is my 'bare naked setup'. If I am carrying my Springfield XD sub-combact or my Springfield Loaded Light Weight Operator and want to go concealed then I switch to my knockoff (UTG brand) Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack. Then the clouds go away, the seas part and I am lead to the 'holy land' of holy crap I can carry all kinds of stuff now. Then the Sling Bag / Messenger Bag can stay in the car and I can take just the pouch with me. So again, I have to ask "What do you need to take with you from the car, how far from the car and for how long?".

hey GrandpaPatch, it's nice to see you're exploring all the subforums and getting used to the forum, :salute:
just a friendly reminder:

if you are talking to someone or replying to them (" You mention getting in and out of the car and knocking your hat off. I tried to carry a backpack just to try.  I packed with a few useful items which I'd never take on a day out but none the less useful.  The pack was in no way filled but had items that could be utilized.

No Way.  I am not a backpack person.  WOW what a pain.  I then tired my Haversack by Duluth, this time with items that I carry in my pockets plus a few extras.   It was not "packed" nor did it have any "survival" things.  NOPE.

I am not a pack carrying guy.  While I really like the idea of a few "extra" useful items, I just cannot for now carry a bag of any type.

About 6 weeks ago I returned from a work trip and noticed a foreign "Smell" coming from the basement of my house. ???

I thought it was the smell of wet down there and the area is having some pretty major construction going on involving Dynamite and pounding for years now and I thought maybe they finally broke my foundation but it was not to be.

A Black Iron pipe from the Kitchen drain broke and festered down there and essentially rendered the house uninhabitable and I have been in and out of Hotels since then and now I consider myself a BackPack carrying guy too!

My entire life day to day is in that thing and it is a whole different perspective on this using it when I have to vs. as I thought I should!

I have ended up using the First Tactical 1 day Tactix every day since then and am pretty much in love with this bag!

I also was already carrying the Messenger from them and together they are amazing for my uses although my back likely would not agree with this.

So now I wonder if I will survive once I no longer need to carry the pack and whether I will just continue to do so as it has been so truly handy so far?

It is amazing how much our perspective about things like this can evolve.

Yes, it's amazing how quickly you can get used to having everything you might need in a day available at your fingertips.  My guess is that you will continue to carry an EDC bag of some sort even when you're back in your home.

I just switched over to a 5.11 Rush 24 in OD green. Was using a Maxped Sitka which still sees lots of use. I just needed space for those summer extras like Gatorade, boonie hat, gloves, my topo maps, and some work related agriculture paperwork.
It's a really well built pack . I bought it at an actual 5.11 store in Austin , Texas. I was really impressed with the staff in there. Not pushy, very informative about all the aspects of all their bags.  :like:

I've barely left my house in a year so I've had no need to carry my stuff.  I still mostly use a square, nylon briefcase, but it will need replacement soon. I have plenty of day packs that I've owned since I carried my books in them when I was in college 30 years ago. I mostly use them for storage organizers these days with each one packed with the accoutrements of different hobbies and stuffed onto shelves where they are out of the way until the day when I ask myself "why am I keeping this smurf?" and pitch it.  Of course, when that day comes I will keep the packs because they remain useful, and by then I will have other smurf that needs to be packed away.

Now that is a organized bag.  I am not a fan of dumping everything inside a back pack style bag or any bag for that matter.  This is tidy and I really like the orange interior.

They once made a bag that could also be worn as a backpack but the unique thing about it was it was paper thin, it had two loops of webbing at each corner to hook up grimlocs, and then molle webbing all the way down the front and back, there were no sides, the zipper at the top opened and gave you some space to store inside, but the unique thing was you basically made your own backpack/bag by attaching whatever accessories via molle, kinda like the serious off-roaders do with their jeeps and attach that panel to the back of the car seat and the back door, I’ve always wanted one, I’ve tried contacting them but I’ve never got through,, it’s called “the molle panel” , but I think it would be perfect, get a bunch of diff small bags that have the straps on the back all diff shapes and sizes and play “Tetris” to get that perfect look, and make sure each bag is labeled with a Velcro strap, so if one was your fak, anyone would know, here’s a pic,,

Hello, the bag is a recycled Firefighter 12 hr.
The Molle ridged panel is sold separately from RFF.

The bags I pickup a garage sale.

For me I like it simple and light.

I carry
Pouch 1 - electronics / cords
Pouch 2 - leatherman wave,
                    SAK, eat n tool
Water
Pouch 3 - first aid, sewing kit,
                     Food, 2 flashlights

This is what works for me, basically it’s to get me home in the event of an emergency.
