Title: EDC SAK and Watch Thread
Post by: jaya_man on November 25, 2017, 12:55:43 PM
Don’t think I’ve seen a lot of watch threads... So post your SAK along with your watches... Would be interested to know what everyone is wearing...

For a start, here’s what I’ve got on me today...My trusty Urban Pioneer mod I call Jalox and I.N.OX. Professional Diver...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171125/d2eabd53a07424e14f9205db1f886da8.jpg)

At the core of my EDC: my favorite SAK, +B Carver SW, with BIC lighter and my favorite watch, a Wenger Military. It´s my EDC pocket watch for the time being. I´ll replace it with an automatic watch after I win the New Year´s Eve lotteries.

Interesting - what's the timepiece ?

Its the Seagull 1963 Chinese Airforce watch, allegedly a prototype made for the PLAA (no real proof of that though).

The Seagull ST1901 movement in it is a copy (a good one) of the Lemania 1873 which has been used in many different watches.

You can get them in the EU from Here (http://www.watchunique.com/seagull-1963.html)

I posted the first pic in the Climber Club thread yesterday, but it fits here as well, so why not, and another one with a few more items exclusively for here.

Wathces: two Casios (won't bother with model numbers, the battery just died in the sporty one a couple of days ago) and a Timex Expedition; SAK's: black early Golfer (Compact without the hook), black Climber, early Grand Prix with silvertech scales, ruby Classic SD. I must admit that the Classic and the Grand Prix sees very little carry.

I spent my whole working life working alone almost always. There were a few times I had help, such as my son Douglas & his sister. But those times were all to seldom. I did heating and air conditioning & appliance repair. That doesn't sound too bad but ir is very physically demanding & will take a huge toll on your body. It also is a hard life for a watch. I had a couple of very nice, high dollar watches & loved them. Problem was my lifestyle destroyed rhem.
I learned to appreciate a dependable watch that was a bit lower in cost. So without further adeau I give you Timex.

The complete dial is luminescent, it's a large watch so youncan actually read by the light of the dail by night!
I'll have to look up the model number though.

I love this Seiko Automatic but it goes too fast - like 5 minutes a day, which is just a bit too wayward even for me. It's been replaced by a Timex automatic, which, surprisingly, is far more accurate and just as silent. (Weighs a tonne though)
The Wenger Evowood, on the other hand, is almost the perfect penknife. Very glad I got one before they became totally extinct.

During arm chair commando raids I always carry my Spirit S BO and Breitling Avenger Blackbird 44 ...
I have to be careful because the watch has a DLC coating which scratches everything (except diamonds). It can ruin a VIC shelf queen in seconds.

Citizen Eco-Drive and OC Red Farmer. I've had the Citizen for over 10 years and worn it every day, and I made the Farmer about a week ago.

My Wenger watch came with a nice box. Someday I´ll make pics.

I still have the receipt. I bought the watch the 26th of November 2009. It had a E 115 price tag but I only paid E 70 for it.

My EDC watch, a Suunto Ambit 3 and one of my rotation SAK, Ti custom Fieldmaster. I know the watch not a classic but I run (occasionally bike and swim too) so I need something to track distance and pace.

This thread needs a refresher :like:

Victorinox Farmer & Sinn 157 M  TY with Lemania 5100 movement.

I've got the Sinn new at my Air force time back in 1995, when money wasn't short
This was the German Airforce pilots issue. They used this model from Sinn and alternatively one from Tutima (same movement, different buttons). Tested to be accurate at 8g  :D

I had a friend travelling to Frankfurt am Main to buy one from the factory, as these were not available at any Jewellery or Watchmaker shop back in 1995.

My following watch additions were more economical but as much fun...

Victorinox Mini Champ & G-Shock G-2300

Always wanted to have a SEIKO automatic from the 70s, but gave up at some point.

Yeah that little Seiko has been one of my beaters for years, I sent it back to Seiko last year for a full service and I replaced the strap. In fact I like it so much I bought one for my son as well. The SAK is a Bantam.

Sinn 756 chronograph and Wenger Soldier (1990).  The Sinn is one of the first issue of this model with the case made from Damasko ice-hardened steel (later issues used steel hardened by a different process that they refer to as tegiment treatment).

EDIT: Credit to McStitchy, whose post above inspired this one. Sinn and Alox go together rather well I think!

In anticipation I keep researching the Vostok Amphibia. Today brought me to comparing the Invicta PD to Amphibia. Well, I came across a forum thread from around 09 where a user who ended comments with JR was defending Invicta as a good quality for price value. It just so happens their handle was also MadP..... I agree with the view points. Also, busted out the Smokey SAK

YES SIR IT IS! So I found if I rotated the crown clockwise it would start ticking but randomly stop. I pulled the case back off and while admiring the inner workings noticed the movement kept chugging away. I reinstalled the case back, separated the dial cover(?) and cleaned up all the dust and debris and found high spots of corrosion stopping the seconds hand. I used the tweezers on the Smokey tinker to smooth the high spots without damage to the dial and Voila! Still running after 10 minutes. Info found online stats a case back serial of 40xxxxx is built in 1940. this one begins with 24xxxxx but somewhere in the history the records were lost. Using the Champion magnifier, located under the balance bridge was 1720/12 CAL10. I'm sure that the movement but unsure who the actual maker is being DOXA didn't make theirs in house (from my research).
Sorry for the long post but I'm really getting into Horology and watch mechanics/repair so this stuff intrigues me!

Awesome! I wonder if there is a way to clean up the inside, polish the glass and that kinda stuff. This would be an awesome addition to your EDC  :woohoo:

Currently in search of! Its not a mineral crystal, it feels like plastic? Acrylic? The hands are the bothersome part. There is rust on them, be great if they were clean.

Hm, wonder if there is someone who restores watches like these. Question is what the price point will be

Seems to be pretty pricey. All in all the dial crystal is discolored but once opened the dial itself isn't so bad. Perhaps some polywatch? :dunno:

I have my great-great-grandfather's Zenith p/w and it has a plastic crystal.  It was made in 1912, so, yes, they were using them that early.

I'm sure you could find someone to service it for you, but I suspect you'd spend $300-$500 and that's if you don't need parts.  Send me a PM if you'd like the name and contact details for the guy I use, BC.  He's in Pennsylvania, just FYI.

Thanks Myron, Currently since cleaning it’s been reliably ticking away 15 seconds faster than the invicta which sports the NH35 movement.

Lovely pic, Sir Vic!

IReminds me that I have an old Seiko 5, so here’s a pic of my EDC combo of yesteryear, some 39 years old now! My old Seiko 5 and my first SAK, the Master Craftsman/Astronaut (it had blurb saying how it was used as a piece of kit on space shuttle missions by NASA, sadly since lost along with the box when my parents tidied up whilst I was away at university....) now sporting blue + scales to replace the badly scarred originals - the metal bracelet on the Seiko also suffered badly getting knocked on metal shelving over many years of use in a supermarket when I stacked shelves to pay my way through university and is long gone, though the Perspex watch glass has cleaned up nicely with Brasso and all the scratches are gone, leaving only a small crack which no amount of polish will remove! Given it’s cheap price (it was less than the SAK!) it was surprisingly accurate and lasted me 11 years before getting replaced with a mechanical TAG Heuer Which I gave to friend some 6 years later after he was mugged and had his watch stolen - I was after a “new” secondhand in any case at the time from Austin Kaye on the Strand (anyone else remember them - used to be one of the few places to get good secondhand watches before the internet?), an Ebel Voyager since sold on for a small profit!

Any how, enough rambling, and here they are, the fruits of my labour in Tesco in autumn 1981:

It was running exactly 15 seconds behind for a few days. It’s a non hacking movement so I thought that was not to bad, recently it’s developed a mind of its own so I began playing with adjustments. every morning I set/compare to the NIST atomic clock, but it’s for fun. If you don’t fiddle with the insides, I’m sure it would be fine for days-weekish. I think that’s part of the quirkinesses of the watch though too.
I recommend to anyone who enjoys watches.

BClogic, haven't you thought about customizing your amphibia? For me, Amphibia = customization. The original bracelet is smurf and the bezel doesn't fit the case. You can choose from many kinds of bezels: with or without insert, brass ones etc. You can try mesh bracelet, zulu or rubber strap. Seethrough caseback is also cool. Tuning amphibias is fun!

For sure! I really like the 710634 so I think I’ll leave it as is. I did put on a Jubilee bracelet the other day. Truthfully didn’t mind the factory bracelet either. I plan on buying another to mod. I get so many ideas looking online at what’s available to mod!
I like your brass bezel!

Before the brass bezels were available, old amphibists had to make them on their own removing the chrome surface with sandpaper. I also did it that way :).

Unfortunately the watch is not mine, just borrowed from a friend from the watch forum for couple of days.

I didn’t get into watches until past March right before lockdowns and layoffs. I got laid off of work and found some old watches in the house then fell down another rabbit hole I’m a noob by all accounts.

Black alox, red shield with early 1950s Stowa ARMEE FRANCAISE watch.

Aha, the Poor Man's Black Beauty -- excellent, and one of my favorites and frequent carries too!  And I love that Stowa too; I've often been tempted by the modern Laco of the same design.  Very nice!

This holiday season, I am carrying these two winter magic beauties -- the eponymous SAK and a Circula 1955 Handaufzug.  I just got the watch yesterday and am completely head over heels with it.

Love it. Bought it about 2 years back. Keeps great time. Takes a beating without breaking a sweat. A great tool watch. No idea why Tudor discontinued it. It was their take on the Explorer.

I’ll post my other Tudor tomorrow. See what you think of it.

I will look forward to it!   Tudor's in-house movements are just incredible, aren't they?  I've owned two Black Bays and both MT calibers were near-perfect time-keepers.   I currently am down to just the Black Bay 58 blue, and it's one of my all-time favorite watches.  Perfect in every regard!

Unfortunately I’m 50/50 on their MT calibers. I bought a BB58 925 (sterling silver case) earlier this year from an AD. After a month the movement would stop moving while wearing it. Wasn’t an issue with winding. Brought it back and they sent it back to Tudor for review. Tudor confirmed it’s defective and needs parts replaced. They’ve had it since early July. I’ve been told it will be done in December. So after buying a brand new luxury watch and wearing it one month, I’ve had to be without said watch for almost 6 months. The AD said refund or replacement was not possible.

Probably the last Tudor I ever buy.

Yeah, that totally blows!  My experience with Tudor has been only positive, and obviously there is a mechanical turkey every once in a while.  After owning nine (!) faultless BMW's, my brother bought a 6-series GT and experienced catastrophic engine failure within 12K miles!  The dealer sent it back to Munich for BMW to study, and put a new engine in it.  The car's been fine since.

Worst new watch experience I ever had was with a Selitta-powered Sinn.  The watch was never right, and I finally gave up trying to get Sinn to make it right while avoiding sending it back to Germany.   Finally I paid my watchmaker to put an ETA 2836 into it and it was fine.  Sold it to a friend and the thing lives to this day...

I swore a vow against Selitta-powered watches after that Sinn, but just recently broke my vow and bought a Laco A-dialed flieger with a manual wind Selitta something or other in it.  So far, so good....

Strap is Horween shell in Whiskey if anyone's wondering.  :)

I have this watch, kinda wish I went with another but I like it because each hour has a number rather then just a mark, anyway my one problem is my wrist size and wearing the strap it’s in the 2nd to last hole, so I was wondering if anyone knows a good band I can swop it out with? It’s supposedly a 18mm..

What a great thread! It's like a peak into everyone's lives.

My daily pairing is either of the below - a Seiko 5 as old as me, if I'm in the office or dressed smart; or a Casio F91W if I'm doing anything practical.

Paired with the trusty Super Tinker of course!

Looking good, Charlie!

I very seldom wear a watch anymore (would have to remove at work, so just got out of the habit).  I do like classically styled diving watches though.  They are waterproof for all practical purposes, take a serious beating with nothing more than a few scratches to show for it, and they look good with any attire from swim trunks to a tuxedo.

And the SAK is beautiful!

I bought the watch fairly recently, and as I understand it the watch was serviced. The caseback and crown gaskets were all fantastic and the amplitude and beat error are near perfect. As for an excellent watchmaker I send my stuff to one in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He’s the best of the best as far as I’m concerned. He’s so good that he’s a Rolex certified service center and one of only a few in the nation!

Casio AMW-320R-9AV with third-party bracelet and SwissChamp.

I've been thinking of getting the official Casio bracelet so thought I'd try with one I already had first. But I'm liking this one, despite the end links not quite fitting flush. I can live with that trade-off as the links are solid vs. the rolled ones of the Casio bracelet.    :)

I must confess, Myron, that I didn’t know! However, according to my inter web search (watch ID, so blame them if this info is wrong!) he did indeed wear a very similar Rotary watch, the only difference being a small second hand dial rather than a centre sweep second hand - I must confess I didn’t notice when watching the series when it came out on TV!

Made a bracelet a tad longer on my Hamilton Jazzmaster Day Date today. Quite frankly it was my first attempt on messing around with a bracelet size - went quite well using just a cheap Chinese tool and a large flathead + pliers on my Work Champ

It’s been a while since I had this watch on my wrist - it loses the practicality game to an Apple Watch despite Hamilton is way more beautiful and inspiring.

Hey ToolJoe,

You can find a strap tool on Amazon, but beware cheapies.  The best are made by a Swiss company called Bergeon.  You can expect to pay about $30-$50 for a good one.  Watch parts supply houses also sell these.  Here's one I've bought from:
