Yea really... You'll even have problems with this one regarding UK laws  :P :P :pok: :pok: :pok:

IMHO they'll make it in other sizes, this is just a pilot project.... And #8 is the most selled one...

we can't EDC Opinals in the UK if they have the locking ring (without a good excuse  ::) )
Bigger is always better   >:D

And thanks for the link EDC

:gimme:   i need one of these in my life  :D orange and black  :tu: cool idea and no swelling of the handle, nice too see opinel trying some new ideas with a old twist,  :tu: would like to see smaller sizes, and i guess here in the uk we could still pop off the lock ring .

About time, though they seem to have gone a bit too far...

I would like what they were making already, with a plastic handle, not this OHO, serrated multicolour serrated thing....  >:(

Hopefully they will release a more plain version too, hopefully with a non tactical price.

Sailing? No problem at all!

If I'm out on the boats I usually have a fixed blade in a sheath on my belt. Walked right in front of a courthouse which is adjacent a central police station with a 4" belt knife on, lock windlass in one hand and cup of tea in the other ... no problem  :D

wonder if you could take out the serrated blade and add a regular carbon or ss one.

then you have a handle and blade that would work.

As I've said in the other new Opinel thread...

I like it. :tu: If it comes in PE i'll buy one for sure. I was just thinking when Mat made his thread on that cold steel twistmaster opinel "tribute" how a plastic opinel would be a nice thing to have. Great steel + no swelling or the handle.

The whistle doesn't bother me at all, it doesn't get in the way and could be useful in case of an emergency or for signaling. I've been in a situation on the top of a mountain, (1600 meters / 5200 ft) with wind blowing at me shouting at the top of my lungs to my friend who was about 20meters / 65 ft away and he couldn't hear a thing. A whistle on the other hand... I never go to the mountains or woods without one any more. It's easier to blow a whisle than it is to shout, and the sound carries further.

But I wouldn't want to go around opening slippery stubborn shackles with an exposed blade...

I'm 99% sure opinel already makes knives in plastic handles, I recall seeing a bright green one in store, definitely doesn't look like wood.

My biggest problem with it is the awful serrations.

We had this discussion before in the opinel thread but nobody could actually find an original plastic handled, folding opinel.  ???
They do produce coloured wooden  ones though, that could look like plastic.

Did the green one look like this? It's wood. I've never seen a plastic handled opinel before this video.

No it was a bright neon green with white lettering, definitely not something you can do on wood, price was a bit lower than the wood model next to it as well. Next time I'm there I'll see if they still have it.

These new opinel knives should be available here in just over a month....

Just because I do not like them (now/yet) it does not mean I will not buy at least one...  :tu:

That's MSRP as well too- I'm certain street price will be a lot better.  Still a good knife for $35 is nothing to sneeze at.

Doesn't looks like MSRP, if you look at the other items on that site they are comparable to the street price. But of course they could be price gouging on a new item.

The good thing with Opinel is that there isn't the usual huge difference in price between the US and the rest.

I've got an orange one today, as soon as I learned about them. I never had a wish to buy an Opinel, I was always a Victorinox fan. But, what a mistake! They are great knives. I choose the Outdoor for EDC, in order to save my XLTs blades from destructive tasks and because it had a clip-point half serrated blade that the Swisschamps lack. I found more than I expected. It is cheap, lightweight, with locking blade without beeing threatening or tactical  (but it bites!) and the handle has a simple ergonomic design. I don't know if the whistle but it doesn't bother at all. It isn't as sharp as a new SAK, but the difference is small. It is beautiful in it's simplicity. This is a real Spartan; the homonym model of Victorinox is an Athenian besides this knife. Love at first sight. I'm going to get some more, classics and slims.

I have been trying to get one but the dealer here has decided not to get them (yet)...

I have not seen them online (Amazon uk etc) yet, though with Opinels I have realised that I need to select them from a shop, to get one I like, as their finish is a bit "agricultural" some times. My only real user Opinel is my No12, filet blade.

I'm a big opinel fan, at first the plastic really turned me off, but I think I'll get one anyways.  It would make a good beater field knife, but ironically the $10-15 traditional models will be better taken care of than this new more expensive one.

Mostly I think it will be a good mushroom knife for my wife, as the whistle will help in the woods when we wander apart.

The shackle opener makes it easy to open the blade one handed. The plastic will not absorb water making the opening difficult. The serrations at the base help to start a cut at some materials, from plastic to bread. I love mine. I spend 22€, you can buy other Opinels, Moras and Victorinox for less but it isn't for rich people.
