Title: Blast owners club
Post by: Mercury on September 10, 2011, 07:27:35 PM
I don't know if we have anything like this, so here we go.  The blast is my all time favorite.  I buy and sell a lot of tools, trying each for EDC purposes, but the Blast is the best fit overall.   The size is perfect and the zytel inserts are comfortable.  I really dislike Leatherman's outboard opening tools, because I have no faith that they will stay closed.  With the blast you get the classic design and security along with pure comfort and ease of use.  The only thing I would change is the mini bit driver.  Don't get me wrong,  I love the mini bit driver, I use it for Eyeglasses maintenance, but I have a Squirt on my keys that has the tool I need for that and I could really use an awl more often.  But, all MT's are a compromise and this one fits me like a glove.  Speak up Blast lovers!

I love my Blast and have to say it is one of my favorite tools. It is basically a Wave in a different configuration. A+ in my book.

I will get pics of my Blasts later tonight or tomorrow.  I only have two, but more may be added at a later date, after a certain BO treat is acquired from a friend.

Hi Gang,

I've got 12 Leatherman Blasts and use one for my EDC a good portion of the time.  I think this puts me in the club.  By the way, these are included in the over 270 L'man pliers/scissor tools in my collection.

Cheers - Joe

I have a Blast, but I can't get any pics right now as I keep it in one of our vehicles.  It was actually my first multitool, and I remember the excitement when I got it in the mail.  From that point on I was hooked and over the course of the next few months purchased a few more Leathermans.  For the box body, tools on the inside design, I actually prefer the Rebar, but the Blast is right up there.  I will have to try to retrieve it from the vehicle for some pics at some point.  Definitely a great MT and the one that started it all for me :D
Title: Re: Blast owners club
Post by: Mercury on May 20, 2013, 04:47:31 AM
I can't say it was my first.  Technically my first was a Gerber pinchyourpalm special, then a PST that got stolen, then my trusty old sideclip.  I stopped carrying the sideclip for years and in 2008 I decided I wanted a Blast and bought one from Walmart after much deliberation over the choice between Blast, Wave, and Core.  I fell in love with it immediately.  I carried that blast for two years and then broke the medium screwdriver blade repairing an old wooden driver for a friend.  I was heartbroken.  Checking into LM's website spawned my journey into MT's and my joining this site.  I have always had a Blast since then and it has always been my stalwart companion even after carrying so many other models.  I now have my latest blast in my EDC bag, because out of all my tools I know that no matter what I am comfortable carrying the Blast in any situation.

I drove the vehicle in which the Blast resides to work today, so I took the Blast out and have it sitting here at my desk at work so that I'll have it with me when I get home tonight.  Then I should be able to take some pics of my old buddy :)  I haven't carried it in forever, but I've been playing with it off and on today and am remembering how I felt when I first opened it and got my hands on it.  Holding it again has also reminded me of one of the reasons I prefer the Rebar, and that's the slimmer body.  The Blast is rather thick for the tools you get, but I know that is due to the Zytel inserts.  Due to its thicker body though, it makes for a decent light duty hammer :)

It's funny because, thinking back, I hadn't discovered Leatherman's website until after I got the Blast.  I just relied on Amazon searches for various Leathermans.  The first time I went to the site, the Rebar was advertised on the main menu, but it wasn't out yet.  Had I been a little more patient and thought to look on Leatherman's site, I may have ended up waiting and getting the Rebar.  However, I know me and my lack of patience when it comes to getting a new toy, and I doubt I would have waited long, especially considering the Rebar wasn't really available until about 3 months after I got the Blast.

Oh well, I don't regret the Blast.  It actually has all you probably would really need since it has scissors, and the Rebar does not.  Neither have the diamond file, which is too bad.  It even has the fine screwdrivers, which would seem out of place in the Rebar.  The Rebar is more of a trades type user with the awl and serrated blade in place of the scissors and fine screwdriver bit, but I think the Blast was an attempt at a well rounded, "basics covered" type of MT.  Sort of a cross between the trades and urban types

Sorry for the long post, I got a little long winded there   I will try to post some pics tonight.

Nice post!  Good insight on the blast.

I love the blast personally, I carried mine today.  I haven't carried a Blast in a while and it was nice to get all the weight of my ST off my belt.

I have always thought the Blast was a perfect EDC tool that had enough "just in case" features to take care of the unexpected.  I was pretty disappointed with the Rebar though.  While I do like it and will definitely get another one, the thin blade stock worries me, along with the weird shaped file and tiny regular plier gripping area.  I'm not so worried about scissors, as I usually have a SAK on me anyway, but I do agree that the mini bit driver is really nice to have on the Blast.

Thanks :salute:

I agree there, the Blast is a good all-arounder as I said before.  I also agree about the thinner blades on the Rebar.  I remember noticing that myself when I first got it.  The Blast's blade is beefy, and I had forgotten just how beefy it is until I checked it out again today.  Good point about the pliers, but for me, I don't really use them that way.  I use the pliers for finer type work normally, plus I like the replaceable wire cutters, which are quite handy.  Same here with the scissors as I too carry a SAK to cover those.  Still, the Blast and Rebar are both awesome imo, but I like the Rebar a little better.  To each his own though ;)  Pics shortly I hope, once the baby is down for the count :P

Oh I do?  I didn't know there were different locks.  Mine is dated 1011.  I've been having fun playing with it the last couple hours.  Thanks to our discussion, I'm actually considering giving it a slot in my weekly rotation.  That would give me 6 weeks worth of rotation.  I normally keep the Blast in one vehicle and the Wave in the other, but I'm thinking if I want to give the Blast a slot in the rotation, I will put my Charge AL into a vehicle.  I'm telling you, it never ends with me, but at least I'm developing a system to my EDC per week.  Of course, this system only covers what I carry for a MT in my back pocket, not what items I carry in my front pocket.  That only varies among a few select items at this point though.  But I digress ::)  Thanks for bringing the Blast back into my EDC life :tu:

No prob!!

Yea, your locks are the newer ones.  You can tell most easily by the handle cutouts that mirror those found on the ST300.  Another way to tell is that the posts that hold the lock levers into the handles are much larger than older models.  The lever thumb pad is not quite as wide as the handle on older models, whereas the newer ones run the full width of the handle.

I think I like the old style locks better actually.  They're less intrusive on the handle aesthetics/ruler.  I'm assuming there must have been a functionality issue if they were changed to the wider style we have now?

This Blast was the first LM I ever bought new.
In 2004 a coworker sold me his Kick and I was so impressed with it I went out to Home Depot to get another and I ended up with this Blast.

I am a carpenter so this usually is not my first line tool but I always like to carry a MT and the Blast has helped me out numerous times.
Just recently I was in a very tight space at the Philly auto show that took me about 5 minutes to crawl into and I found out I had to cut some  1/4" shims and I only had my Blast on me cause it was too tight for my tool belt.
So after a few saw cuts and scoring with the blade I had the plywood cut and all was well.

Over the years I have also used a Wave, Kick and just got a Rebar but I am sure I will always have a place for the Blast in my toolset.

i love my blast. ill have to post pics here at some point. I got a ss blast as a gift for my dad a few years back and he liked it so much that he got me a blast (knowing that i have a lot of leatherman's and knowing i didn't have a blast) in camo and with my name engraved on the blade.

I've used it a few times but i don't want to damage it because it's really important to me and holds a lot of sentimental value. i think its going to be the only one i have that's not a user.

ill have to get another one to use lol  :gimme:

You guys are a very very bad influence. Never really thought about getting a Blast until tonite.

Is there a pocket clip for the Blast? Just seems to have a great selection of tools I would use a lot but is stuck with the ever so stupid mini driver.

What is up with the mini driver? They must have a kick smurf lobby or something.

I can safely say that I have now become a PSA/Enabler :D!!

No pocket clip that I am aware of.

Don't diss the Mini-Driver, it helped me fix my dad's reading glasses more than once and I use them to tighten the screws on my glasses/sunglasses every so often. It also helped when I needed to change the transponder chip on my car keys by helping to gently pry open the plastic casing without breaking the mounting clips and when I was helping my bro tune his RC cars, I recall him asking for it a few times but that's not so much my thing so only he knows what the smurf he did with that.

Well it would not just screw in like on the Kick. The Kick's pivot screw has a threaded hole in it for the clip to screw into. The Blast does not. If you had the pivot screw from a Kick you could install it into your Blast though.

I've been a Blast owner twice. The first time i sold it, and the second time I gutted it to build the rather splendid Fuse-ilier mod. I prefer the chassis size of the Fuse over all the Zytel line.

I now just have an empty Blast carcass, and not really enough parts to fill it, but am considering cross breeding it with a Wave carcass and assorted LM innards to make a pocket clipped knifeless fully loaded Frankentool thingummyjig

Oddly enough the prices on the Blast are on the rise.  Which is really effing frustrating as they were really low when I had one to sell, even after retirement.  Flippin trends.

I would love to have another one with the newer locks on it, but I'm not paying $80 for the damn thing.

The blast is my all time favorite. Mine stays on my duty belt and has helped a lot on patrol for nick knacks. I think it has a very versatile tool set and covers about everything.

I out recently picked up a Super Tool 300 that was on clearance at Wally World so I could have a plier based MT to carry off duty.

I love the Blast as well  It was the first proper full sized MT that I bought as I got the PST that I have given to me from my Grandma (it was my Grandpas MT)

I bought it in a gift set with a LM carabiner watch  :o :D I carried the Blast until I bought my first Supertool :ahhh and then it ended up in my truck as a backup tool in case I ever needed more pliers or (heaven forbid) if I ever forgot to bring one with me :ahhh ;)

I think as a stand alone the Blast is a very well rounded tool that wouldn't have to be paired with anything else and I would feel like I had everything I needed  Of course no MT is perfect and I will always pair any full sized MT with a SAK :D

But anyways here is to the Blast :salute:

I agree Poncho!

I have been carrying my Blast a lot lately, and I've really enjoyed using it.  I missed having one after I sold my last one and it's been a trip down memory lane to be using it again.

I sent mine back to Leatherman after snapping the flat tip screwdriver and got a Rebar in return.  Not a bad thing, but I sure miss some of the Blast's tools.

The Rebar is a great MT in itself as well but I wouldn't like losing my scissors :-\ That is why I wished they would bring out a PST 3 or a Pulse 200 or something with a tool set similar to either the Pulse or a hybrid PST/PST2  It needs a PE blade and a diamond file plus scissors and an awl, plus the usual flat heads and phillips and since we are dreaming a saw as well :D All on the Rebar chasis or even on the Supertool 300 chasis :gimme:

I think a blade exchanger similar to the Surges and a bit driver on a smaller chasis would be excellent as well :dd:

We've all been saying that for years, but the bleak truth is LM views the Rebar as the PST3, and it won't get any better.  The Rebar is a great tool, but it just isn't what PST/Pulse fans were expecting.
Title: Re: Blast owners club
Post by: Barry Rowland on April 02, 2016, 06:24:56 PM
I agree a thousand percent!  I like the Rebar but it's no PST.  I look at it more as a scaled down Super Tool 300, but when it comes down to it and I had to pick only one Leatherman, it'd be a PST II.

Quite sad as its more a small ST300 than a PST.

This is a club I need to join. Definitelly. The Blast was my first LM and first plier-based-MT and I loved it the day I got it.

I got my second Blast just this week. In case I gonna loose the one I have. They are discontinued. Sooner or later there won´t be that much on the secondary market - at least to reasonable prices.

I prefer it over the Wave. One hand opener toos are not so easy to carry here. And I need a legal reason for carrying it.

It's funny, I have been a blast fan for years and years.  I have bought and sold probably two dozen or so over the years, and whenever I wanted to sell one I could only get $25 to $30 for it, if it was new or in near mint condition.  I was thrilled to find my latest one for $45.  It never ceases to amaze me that a tool that isn't popular in production all of a sudden becomes worth something after it's retired.
Title: Re: Blast owners club
Post by: Poncho65 on April 03, 2016, 03:05:08 AM
That's always the way it seems Merc :-\

I have noticed a trend (coincidental or not  ) on eBay that whenever MTO talk more about certain tools (a surge of threads about various different retired models) they seem to go up in price at least for a while but especially if a tool is first retired (it does take a while for people to find out but as soon as they do they tend to put rare and hard to find in the title and then the prices skyrocket) ::) :D

Of course this happens with most anything else on there as well :D

100 % agreed. Poncho & Mercury.

When it´s gone it becomes interessting, because it´s gone. The only tool that still is available here on evilbay during the years is the PST. It doesn´t rise or fall in price. Always seems to be around 35.00 €. At least here.

Yea, the PST has remained pretty constant as far as I can tell.  I have one that I don't really use, but I never buy any others.  I see them all the time on Ebay though, with that "vintage" tag thrown on there.

I agree that a regular PST price remains fairly constant :tu: But before MTO really started digging around and finding out all the info on the old pre-datecode and japanese PSTs most ebay auctions just listed them all (well mostly) as Leatherman Tool :D but with all the new info that was gathered the large font PST and several of the older models started to get labeled more correctly than they were before and the prices started to go up accordingly :ahhh so for us collectors anyway ;) we kinda shot ourself in the foot so to speak  :D I rather have all the info readily available though because it gets more people into collecting thereby growing the forum

If you look at the lever lock area on Poncho's pic above you will see that there is no notch on the handle below the lever, His is the old style. If you look at my pic above you will see a small notch or cut out in the handle . This the new style.

No pics just yet, but I just completed a transaction with Aloha 007, and am now the proud owner of a later model Blast. Great transaction and great tool!

The Blast is like a PST ii with an added saw. I have been handling it off and on for the last few hours. I was going to buy one a few years ago because I like the toolset and the old-school layout. The reason I didn't was because of the Zytel plastic inserts...I had done harm to the Cellidor of more than one SAK and t want anything where that could happen again.

Glad I handled a friend's Fuse and decided to give the Blast a go round.

I think you will :like: the Blast  Several years back when comparing it to the Wave, I chose it (of course I still ended up with a Wave later  ) but the toolset on it is great and I really wished that they had of kept that set for an option on the Rebar when they discontinued it :-\ I have never had a problem with any of the Zytel on any of mine in that line and I did use the Blast hard for a good while and it never let me down :salute: :like:

Thank you for the background, Poncho.

I have already conducted an admittedly unscientific r ed. I opened both the PST ii and th Blast  grabbed the handles of each in one hand. I found the Blast seems to have flexed less when squeezing it in my strong hand than my PSTii flexed in my weak hand at the same. Granted, the pst handles sit open at a lower angle than the blast, but the movement  of the handles was noted.

So being  a more recent recipient of a Blast, a few observations.. I am unsure how I feel about the Blast seeming unnecessarily thick. The Zytel seems to add to the thickness, while the wide footprint of the Phillips screw driver definitely seems to require more width than, say, a PST 2 or an original Super Tool Phillips head screw driver. The style I swear take up space and as a result, there is also no taper to the box of the tool where it connects to the plyer head.

I am sure that I do appreciate it's longer reach of almost every tool a  compared with the PST 2, and certainly compared to most Leathermans out there. It seems robust, yet also seems light.

Anyone have issues with the bead blasted finish taking on surface rust more than the old-school polished tools?

It certainly packs a lot of tools in one package. I can't comment on the BB finish as I only have a BO verson but I've not had any corrosion problems on my Rebar so far.

I have had mine for around 9 years and I haven't really ever had a problem with rust  The head of my ST300 and Rebar have had a bit of slight surface rust over the years that have been taken care of periodically but I dopn't think the Blast or it's Zytel kin have ever given me any rust problems :salute: It originally beat out the Wave for me when I was trying to replace my PST (the Wave was bought not long after  ) and the only different tool that the Wave had over the Blast was the SE blade :tu: When these came out they really didn't go over well because of the boxy frame and Zytel inserts but after they were retired people started taking note of them and started giving them there just reward but alas it was to late for this line :-\ I still do love the Blast and always feel prepared when I have it on my  :like:

Nice one  Matt !
Thanks  :D I really like the compliment of tools on this and it is my main EDC. I wouldn't say the Blast lacks in tools it's just tailored towards the general public rather than carpenters or campers. More of a general purpose tool like the Wave. I swap it for a Rebar when I go to the woods or travel between states (because of the slighty shorter blades).

Thanks to our fellow member lovecraft25 offering one for sale last week I'm now joining this club as well.  :multi:

I've been curious about the Blast for a while now, so it's nice to have one in hand. Good toolset, pretty authorative snap from the lock, but as I suspected, it's a really boxy and chunky tool. (Definitely a distant third behind my Pulse and Rebar in that sense). The Zytel inserts are okay but bit of a letdown, I was expecting something more comfortable. All in all it's still a very good MT, I like it and happy to have one in my collection. Not an (on-person) EDC item because of the form factor but seems to be a very dependable kit MT.

Nice blast! If it's the 'sharp' edge that bothers you when you said you expected it to be more comfortable, you can lightly run some fine grade sandpaper along the edge to remove the 'sharpness' and it really helps a lot without visibly noticing that it's been done. I even did one of mine by running the shaft of a screwdriver down the edge using a bit of pressure to remove the 'edge', if that makes sense. Sounds brutal, but it does the trick and makes such a difference.

I do have a soft spot for the kick/fuse/blast range.

Yeah, I did that right away, but it's just that the contours don't match/fit my hand and the Zytel is even more rigid than I imagined. Of course it's still very usable, just not more comfortable than similar tools with simple rolled edges, despite its design. For me at least.

It is! And I agree! So many tools so little time...I have 7 leathermans now and I just can't seem to fit some into the rotation. But the ones I come back to are always Wave,Rebar and the Blast :tu:

Those are some great carry choices :like:

The USPS just delivered my ticket into the club: a near-new Blast from Ebay. Never having held one before, I was immediately struck by how much lighter it feels than the Wave.

The Blast was the first tool I bought for myself after inheriting my first LM (a PST) and because of its great toolset it won out over the Wave for me :salute: Well it did at the time anyways  and that does say something for it :tu: of course we know how that went (says the guys with way to many LM to count now)

Thw whole Zytel series is one I wished was still being produced or at least something that directly took it's place like the ST300 did with the Core :salute:

I loved my Blast, and I miss it.  Other than my Rebar, it's the most consistently carried LM I've ever had.  I loved the scissors and I really wish they'd put them back in a tool that size.

I had to go through this thread several times thinking I already posted in here...but I guess I missed this one all these years.

Here are my Blasts. I really like this family of Kick, Fuse, and Blast. At first I wasn't all that keen on the zytel liners, but they do grow on you over time.

Great collection :o :like:

I love the Canon ones and have yet to track down one at a reasonable price  Probably won't at this point :ahhh

The Zytel is rather good at making the handles more comfortable but most people don't think it will hold up over time and therefore cheapens it and probably the main reason for the discontinuation  :-\

The Blast is a great tool, my favorite of the Zytel tools and the first Leatherman I actually bought for myself (my PST was inherited)  :like:

It has one of the best toolsets for me and when  I bought mine it was at least $20 cheaper than the Wave but had almost the exact toolset minus a serrated blade :dd:

Nice one, buddy!

I am not quite happy with my Free P4, which I carry on the weekends. I have been kicking around the thought of whether to get an ARC (which probably won't be any better to me than the P4) or to put a clip on my Charge and carry it. However, after seeing this post I am seriously thinking about putting my Kick clip on my Blast and making it my weekend MT.

Not that you asked, but I vote Blast. I may start carrying mine on weekends along with you.

Or, would there be interest in the midlman challenge? There’s no blast specific challenge outside do that.

The Blast is without a doubt an awesome tool and I was sad to see them retire the Zytel range (well except the Core  the ST300 was just better :D ) but the removal of the Blast, Fuse and Kick left a hole in their lineup that they have slowly tried to close :dunno:
