“Swiss Burger on Rye”
This was a beef burger seasoned with salt and a secret spice mix (ground caraway seeds, dill seeds, black pepper, cayenne pepper, celery salt, and garlic powder). I cooked it on a grill with hickory chips providing a little extra smoke. Added swiss cheese while it was still on the grill. Dressed the burger with mustard, a touch of mayo, and a few pickled onions.
Tasted great! :tu:
since I'm no burger master, pretty good at eating them though, if you need help keeping this rabble in line let me know
Wondering how I can do this, maybe portabella? Not sure this is worse though...

Only, that's my line....
Excellent background, Steve. Thanks!
But join in anyway. I say "the more burgers, the merrier!" :pok:

Here's one: "High Fiber"
...
Shhh.... Don't tell anyone, the secret ingredient is wood ;)
actually i've never made a burger

Yeah.....were gonna fix that.....
Nah....well.....maybe about a bit of weight gain.....

Great giveaway idea!
Here's one: "High Fiber"
I'll work on a pic of it being eaten later

On second thought, I may have to stay away from this thread altogether, that looks delicious Serena! :drool:LOL, thank you very much.

Djeez!!!! That's such a nice knife!!!
I don't grill in the winter.
But… Made this one on my new Weber this summer.
It was so good, I forgot to take a picture while eating it… And no, there's no timestamp… *CRIES*
Hope it'll still count though.
I have no idea a how to call this meat in English. It's 50/50 pig/cow ground beef??? (Or only cow? It's been a couple of months, hmmmm…) Just some pepper/salt, garlic en bell pepper powder.
Cheddar cheese, hamburger bun, ketchup, onions, tomatoes and lettuce.
Nah....well.....maybe about a bit of weight gain.....

Finally! :hatsoff:...
I hate to ask, but does it have to be on a bun? For whatever reasons, I don't have bread at the moment (the great wheat shortage of 2019, or something), but if you'll accept deconstructed bread-free burgers, then that's what is for dinner.....
Mrs Nix loves a good burger....but she usually takes her burger without a bun. Who am I to gainsay her?
(Although, this does raise the tricky issue of trying to establish a difference between a bunless burger and the old Salisbury Steak. I may be inviting disaster here, but let's consider the bun classic, but optional, especially for the wheat-intolerant.)

What about a Patty Melt ;)
...
Stuff...
... catsup and pickles.
Only one question, Sea Monster: where you able to finish that whole thing off?
What's the definition of an "Australian Burger"
Next there will be sandwiches with no bread.... :pok::drool:
Styx, those look fantastic. :tu:
For a first go at a burger, I'd say you did amazingly well and nailed the attempt. Good job making the divots in the center of the patties: I see that paid off. I'm quite fond of a turkey burger myself, and I've one planned for later in the challenge. Well done, sir! :salute:
But....Serena is right....we're missing the date marker....
Definitely do a follow-up set of burgers. You're awl over this! :tu:
p.s. you can brush the open faces of the buns with a little melted butter or olive oil: this will help them toast without sticking. :tu:
Styx: does your camera have an option to include the date/time in the photo? I really want you to get credit for the attempt!

There is also the issue of "took a bite" pic missing
The timestamp is actually an easier issue to solve. Every picture thends to have a digital signature with the basic information suchs as date taken, some information about the device and in case of cell phones more often than not it has a geographical stamp
Kottsie, those look great. I love your side-by-side burgers there! Well done.....actually a nice 'medium'...which is perfect in my book! Thanks! We did them in two sizes so one can choose
I've mixed some bacon into the meat once or twice. That's a great idea: adds a bit of smoky flavor and helps keep them moist. :tu:
How did they taste?
You are off to a great lookin' start there, Fuzzy! :ahhh :like:
Some purists might quip that you are treading awfully close to making meatloaf, but we won't pay them any mind....

The "took a bite" rule is only important to prove that a burger is edible. I'll waive that here, because your burgers are clearly edible! You used Cholula, right? Edible.

the same purists would frown on just about everything, even the choice of lettuce
That is some outstanding work, right there, Fuzzy! Well done! (No, I see another perfect 'medium'. :tu:).
Now, the question....if you win, do you keep the prize, or does mum get it? (It was her recipe.... :pok: )

I love a good portobello burger. Lots of umami. And I agree with you that the vegan/vegetarian 'fake meat' patties aren't that great. I'd rather do what you've done there and keep the food true to itself. :tu:
Sorry you didn't enter with that one, looks like a winner!
Excellent burger Twiliter. :salute:
I used to stuff (top?) portobello mushrooms with very garlicky home made guacamole and stick them on a barbecue. smurf me they were nice! :tu:
And done! :cheers::ahhh
I'm not officially joining the contest, I'm just here for fun, so no time stamp or bite taken out. I already ate one of them, I couldn't resist, and the mushroom is WAY better than the fake veggie patties they sell. It's been a while since I made burgers, so this was fun, thanks Nix for letting me interrupt with my silliness!
Carry on making my mouth water guys... :D

I could eat half a dozen of those!
This one is a little bit different, still beef, (still no bun). Patty is a bit peppery this time, just black and white.
I wanted to make the "bun" out of eggplant, but my eggplant wasn't big enough, so it's just got eggplant slices, still has lettuce (rocket), cheese (cheddar) and egg (chicken), a touch of paprika on the egg, served with sprouts (not quite thick cut beer battered chips, but what can you do), I went for horseradish cream for the condiment, adding to the over-all zingy flavour.

Kottsie, Turkey works really well. I find that it is mild in flavor, so I like to add some spices, too. :tu:
Nice! Got to test that some day!
I went basic with this one...its a 2am snack after all.
The burger is marinated in equal parts steak sauce & worcestershire with a dash of ghost pepper sauce; easymelt queso is poured over it; all on a griddle toasted bun
(yes I always leave a griddle on my stove just for toasting, quesadillas, and pancakes)
The whisp in the bite pic is not a lens flair...the burger was still steaming(took 3 tries to catch it)
Edit:
EasyMelt is basicly the local brand Velveeta & has a little tomato & pepper in it.

I know this challenge is going a bit slow but it could be that people don't make hamburgers too often
It could also evolve in to a burger thread.I know this challenge is going a bit slow but it could be that people don't make hamburgers too often
We'll see....
I've had fun and I've loved everybody's entries so far. So I'm quite satisfied. I have three more burgers I plan on making before the end of the challenge. I expect I'll do a fourth as well. But who knows? Life happens and I may not get to do all the burgers I'd like to. On the other hand, I eat pretty much everyday, so between now and Feb 15th, I think I should be able to get a few burgers in. ;)

A triple decker mushroom burger?

Right... I call these rather unimaginatively British Burgers as I've replaced a lot of the usual affair with lots and lots of hot horseradish sauce... and some greens including watercress... and even more horseradish sauce on the side. The burgers themselves are just good quality minced steak, mushed garlic and salt... fried in butter.Square china! How posh.
Once I got over the pain, they were quite delicious... well done to me! :D

Good news, Fuzzy!
Mrs Nix was suitably impressed by your British Burger and has decided to remove you from her naughty list. But you should still consider yourself cautioned. :tu:
:rofl:Aah! Makes sense! I thought you meant 16 posts in this thread before posting a burger :D
Syem, you've got a few more than the requisite 16 posts. And you can think of 16oz as a little less than 1/2 a kilo. So, you are awl set! Post up your burgers! :tu:
We loved these vegetarian burgers. They were super-moist, super-tasty, and very satisfying! :tu:

Blackbeard......just fantastic!
Mrs Nix especially loves caramelized onions on a burger. So I know that making them is a bit of a labor of love. Looks like you nailed them. I can only imagine that, with the asiago and those beautiful onions, you had a whole bunch of delicious going on there!

Next weekend mate, just you wait... Just you wait.
"Jaffaburgerschlagger"
I think not, Fuzzy.
For starters, it isn't a real thing.
Also, I doubt it's something one would actually eat after being thrown into a midden, if it were a real thing.
And, most compelling of awl, "That's NOT a Burger. "
Of course, the rules being the rules, you can get three (3) other members to help you overturn my ruling......I suppose.... (see Rule #5).
Next weekend mate, just you wait... Just you wait.
Wait.... Did mum come up with a new recipe? :dunno:
You sooooo have to give the prize to mum if you win this thing. :pok:
The last two batches of mince went into bolognese, and wraps.
may I ask,
how long have you been doing Keto? :pok:
you and the wife both?
Zoid has been absent of late. Not sure what he's up to. :dunno:
I had been hoping that he would answer Sea Monster's 'Australian Burger' with some sort of 'Kiwi Burger'.
Maybe in February?
Quotemay I ask,
how long have you been doing Keto? :pok:
you and the wife both?
Some months? I'm not doing it, I'm just a victim / collateral damage. (I pretend to be supportive, but whenever I'm away for work I eat all the carbs)
I think that is called a "Juicy Lucy".

I know I made one of those once upon a time, but I don't remember the details.
I say, if the cheese runs out and makes a mess, fantastic! You could probably avoid such a scenario by letting the burger rest for 5 minutes after you take it off the heat. But where would the fun in that be?
Hope you are feeling better soon! Colds can drag out, just miserable.
Maybe, given the time of year, this should have been a chicken soup challenge?
Why the chilling of the burger? Does it settle the contents, allow the spices to work through, solidify the shape or something else?
Keen to learn to make a better burger. :D
Eh? Why's that then zoidy, you got a burger embargo going on?
:ahhh  :ahhh
That looks fantastic! I love the idea of the glazed 'shrooms. :tu:
A most excellent entry! :tu:
(Did it taste OK....?)
Nice burgers everyone! I have been lazy and bought raw but shaped burgers a couple of times this past weeks but it does not feel right to enter with those, so no pics. Good taste though
 I missed the part in the rules about random drawing  For some reason I thought we were competing.
Well at least I'm eating good, hope I was of some help with recipe ideas, they were all very tasty.
In honor of dear Zoidy, I thought I'd offer this.... Kiwi Burger.Where's the beetroot? :pok:
This one has avocado and bacon on it! (and look at that egg! that's smurfin brilliant!)

Oh, dear....
Here's the thing: the more you enter--up to six entries per participant--the greater your chances! Each entry gets tossed into the hat for the random drawing. :tu:
In that sense, there is a degree of competition....
why did I think today was the cut off date?
If you make the veggie burger anyway, let us know how it turns out. :tu:A lot of the recipes I have found pad them out with breadcrumbs which I would rather not do.

Pineapple and fried egg :o how barbaric... but interesting...
smurfing great looking burger Nix - good effort. :salute: Now you tell Mrs Nixy to stop being a pusssy and get back in there!

Mine aren't entries, though...... :cry:I know, but it still makes for a good list. Perhaps miss a line and add them at the bottom.

Had planned out a complete conspiracy to win this GAW.
Sorry for the heartburn, Fuzzy, but those look tasty!
Same as the last burger?
No difference in ingredients or technique?
I might have another burger in me...
Had some time yesterday so went to the store and got ingredients to try recreate Nix's Souvlaki Lamb Burger.
Beef and Lamb
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7908/40122284783_15ff4878bf_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/248tcqK)
Added paprika, chopped mint, oregano, garlic, onion, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

It started snowing hard so got the portable propane grill out and put it under cover on the front step of the house (no chance of charcoal grilling in this weather).

Added spinach, feta cheese, grilled tomatoes, with tzatziki on the top bun. Olives on the side for some fancy pants garnish to try impress Mrs BCNZ and pass this off as Valentines dinner.
This strategy did not work.

Overall the burgers turned out good. Next time I would use half the amount of beef to let the lamb flavour come through more, and would use the charcoal grill to get some smokiness in there.
:ahhh
Awesome entry: dogs, snow, and mountains!
Did Mrs BCNZ enjoy the burger?
And if that didn't melt her heart, just what can you do to top that on Valentines day?
:tu:
Well smurf me - that is outstanding! I can't beat that. :hatsoff:

Juicy Lucy time!!!! :ahhh
Yeah i'm unsure if this Cabot vermont sharp cheddar block I have will melt good, so I might use a pepper jack instead.
Right, tried something new (to me) tonight - 1/2 pound venison burger with melted camembert, cranberry sauce and watercress on a ciabatta roll.
It was okay, but again sadly not something to write home about.
Just tried this tonight... far too much kumera. Was OK though. If you make the veggie burger anyway, let us know how it turns out. :tu:A lot of the recipes I have found pad them out with breadcrumbs which I would rather not do.
I'm thinking of chickpeas, kumera (sweet potato), coriander....

But completely acceptable to share with strangers on the internet. :pok:
3. Where's your smurfing burger! :pok:In my stomach. :P
   That last photo - it's like watching a shark! :o
Well... not to blow my own trumpet or anything, but I really excelled myself this evening... I also made some excellent burgers!
Lamb and Kalamata Olive Burgers (with thyme, mint, mushed garlic and a splash of rioja) on ciabatta with mayo, humus, tzatziki, iceberg lettuce, piccolini tomato, feta cheese and... streaky bacon, with extra tzatziki and a sort of Greek style side salad.
.........
Anyway, I think that's me done with burgers for a while...
I think it's important to have a good seal around the cheese. :tu:That could be a motto for life in general.
... I can't help feeling that we've all come away with a bit of a win with this one. You guys are just marvelous. :salute::iagree: It has been an interesting thread, even for a non-meat eater. :salute:
Wow! Thanks Nix!! :woohoo:
Great GAW, lots of fun, and I learned some good burger making tips. Was awesome to see all the last minute entries (Fuzzbucket really knocked it out of the park with his lamb burger). Awesome thread!
Title changed :tu:
And then I'm hungry again..

Mushrooms are something like a cross between meat and vegetables as is so there should be no problem with putting them in to a burger (next to meat of course). :D
Fourth of July burger. Beef, medium cheddar, pickles, onions, and spicy mustard on a toasty ciabatta roll.

Anybody else making up some burgers lately? :cheers:No, but I did buy a vegan "Mr Bean" burger from a food trailer recently with a Black Bean and Cashew patty.

You gonna keep that all to yourself or can you share..... :pok:The former it seems.

That looks good! There is a place i think I Arizona where you have to sign something and there is a doc on hand for anyone who orders a special burger!
But I could so go for a 5-guys burger right now after looking at this, especially with their fresh cut fries!
JR
There is a Five-Guys about 80 miles from here, but I've been too lazy to try it.....That’s a little bit of a drive just for a burger! There’s one only 3mi from here, but we don’t drive and the Mrs and her diet makes it really suck!
I never actually heard of 5 guys :dunno:. One opened up near my and we tried it last year. It was good as were the fries. We have In and Out here in Cali which is also good. I don't eat outside the home that often so I was pleased with 5 guys.
I think we might need a pic of that red onion burger, Pacu..... :pok:
I should not be looking at this thread. :ahhh
I just checked Google Maps. Theres one 1700 feet from here. :facepalm:I have one 30 seconds from my front door (on foot)
It's one of my favorite fast food burgers.
Good grief! Those look huge! :o
( But I'd do my best..... )
Some real wood smoke make a big difference. :tu:
What are your favourite woods? I've used apple and hickory to date. Tried mesquite but didn't like it even with pastrami which needs as much smoke as it can get.
Well, it sort of qualifies. ::)
